My biggest takeaway from this episode, other than just the bittersweet baby queer romance, was the implication that Ellie had to shoot Riley. Because she told Joel she's had to kill someone before and we know Marlene captured her pretty soon after this so logically it has to have been shooting Riley after she turned.

@@AzraelTK wait, did I have a daydream moment...when and how did Ellie confirm that she had to (life end) Riley?

@@NYCbabyJes near the end when they stop near Jackson she told Joel about Riley. That both were bit and wanted to sit it out and turn together, that Riley turned and "I had to... She was the first to die, than tess..."
So yes she didn't say directly "I killed her" but I think there is not much room for interpretation

Riley and Ellie facing terminal illness while young and at the very start of their romantic relationship took an understandably different way out to Bill and Frank. It’s an interesting mirror.

I’m excited for you to watch next episode and the finale. Everything that’s happened up until now, especially episode 8, have huge ramifications on the mentality of the characters in tonight’s finale. I’m excited to hear your take on all of it.
    ETA:
That scene with the Fedra guy wasn’t in the game. We never saw that side of them. It’s wonderful that they’re adding these kinds of details.
I was today years old when I leaned that “moonshine can make you go blind” is a real thing because of methanol poisoning. Thanks for that!

When I was a kid I used to sleep walk a lot. My parents could redirect me back into bed by just saying “it’s time for bed” and I’d walk back upstairs and go to bed. Weird.

A guy I used to work with slept in a separate bed from his wife. He'd had several instances where he acted out dreams physically. He hit her once, closed fist substantial punch to her face.
He was obese and used a CPAP device to regulate breathing while asleep. That has to interfere with sleeping / dreaming, I assume.
He was so freaked about what happened they decided to sleep in two beds with a gap between to hopefully prevent future episodes that could result in physical harm.

I had undiagnosed sleep apnea, but apparently it’s a rare type called central sleep apnea. Obstructive is the common one where it’s something like being obese interfering with your airway. Central means my brain doesn’t send the signals needed to breathe period. So my brain is actually mixing up the proper signals. I did get ejected 50 Ft when my ex flipped the car on the highway. Among the many injuries was a skull fracture and brain swelling, and spent a week in a coma. So that’s probably why.
But I have horrible insomnia. I go 24 hours regularly because falling asleep became impossible. Only drugs helped. If I don’t take anything, I’ll wake up feeling like I’m having a heart attack because my heart is racing and I’m hysterically crying and I can’t breathe. I feel like I’m drowning. I’d kill for a single night of restful sleep.

Actually the CPAP is supposed to improve sleep. A person with obstructive sleep apnea stops breathing during sleep and they have to partially wake up to start breathing again. That disrupts your sleep. With severe cases that can happen over 30 times an hour.
The CPAP machine ensures enough air flow to keep those disruptions from happening.
I’m not sure how somnambulant behavior and sleep apnea interact. But if it increases the risk of that behavior my guess is that it’s more likely due to sleeping more soundly.

The idea that moonshine (inherently) contains dangerous amounts of methanol is actually a myth. If the right process isn't used it can contain fusel alcohols that cause much worse hangovers, but you can't separate out the methanol. It contains however much the original wash (the alcoholic liquid that is distilled) contained. The idea that home distilled spirits contain dangerous amounts of methanol actually stems from Prohibition when ethanol was purposefully adulterated with methanol, either by the government to try to keep people from drinking it... or by untrustworthy moonshiners who adulterated it to cut their product and make more money.

My friend's grandma made the BEST Kahlua in her coat closet. It was her dad's recipe from Prohibition. I always had my friend drink it first though, just in case.

Would sepsis have set in that fast though? The fact the episode ends with Ellie sewing the wound made me think this is set pretty soon after the last episode and the issue is that he's bleeding out, not that he has an infection. Like obviously Ellie's a child in an apocalypse so she's not medically trained, I just thought infection would take a while longer to set in?

Probably combined shock, initial symptoms from blood loss and then made worse by septic shock over the next 12-24 hours or so. Sepsis can set in awful quickly. Combined hypovolaemic and distributive shock is a bugger to treat 😩

*Why did you skip their kiss? It was a HUGE factor in Ellies development! It shows that she likes women not men hence the tomboy look as well and has an even more profound impact on her getting r-worded by a man because she probably would've never even slept with a man willingly so it was even that more traumatizing. Also it was Extremely impactful to who Ellie is today because her first love d13s. Also it's implied that Ellie had to be the one who life-ended Riley due to Riley turning and her not wanting her to live the rest of her life as a monster. And especially as a gay man (and myself as a bisexual woman)...it is heartbreaking that you didn't even Mention that scene or her sexuality or her first love at alllll...did you not show it or even mention it to pander to your straight audience?*
    Just bizarre!
