Honestly as much as i love my team, even though they arent in champions League, i dont want to see teams based on merit....if your the champion of a country's league you should be competing against the other champions of other countries... champions league, not champions league plus 5 places behind....
This is the start of the European Super league. The initial format was a distraction to what they really had planned which is this. Just you wait.. they will get huge funding and put together a league structure that all the top leagues feed into and you will see Liverpool, United, city etc leave the premier league to join the European leagues
People are saying this is worse, this is for me slightly better 1) even before a ball is kicked in the group stages, we know where certain teams are going to finish in their group and who will be in the quarter finals, Bayern Munich by their standard finished 3rd in Bundesliga and they still top their group and made it to the semi final, in the pokal they were knock out in the second round by a team in the 3rd tier of German football. 2) The last 16 isn't the best 16, a team can finish in third and have more points and a better goal difference to someone else who came second 1998 World Cup Spain had 4 points with a goal difference of +4 3rd Chile had 3 points with a 0 goal 2nd difference 2019-20 champions league Ajax had 10 points with a goal difference of 6; Lyon 8 points, Dortmund same points but a goal difference of 0, Atletico Madrid same points with a goal difference of 3, Atalanta 7 points with minus 4, Spurs 10 with a 4 goal difference 2023-24 Champions league Shakhtar Donetsk 9 points 3rd PSG 8 points, and Copenhagen 8 points both 2nd 3) Unless the unseeded team took a sledge hammer and battered the seeded team, it doesn't matter as the seeded team always has the advantage with the second leg being at home.
