- In 2025, FIFA will finally launch their latest competition, with the first edition of the newly-revamped Club World Cup set to take place in the United States during the months of June and July.
That means that the 2023 Club World Cup, due to take place in Saudi Arabia this December, will be the final one in its current format, with the competition expanding from just seven teams to 32, and taking place every four years rather than annually.
And following moves by Saudi Arabia and the USA to rival Europe's dominance in the sport, could FIFA's latest venture become more popular and prestigious than the Champions League in the future? Could we see the next Haaland or Messi joining Al-Hilal or Urawa Red Diamonds in their prime as they look to win the competition?
On today's FD Explained, we take a look behind the curtain at FIFA's bid for dominance in club football.

Do you think FIFA can rival UEFA when it comes to club football?!
every four years takes away the possibility of replacing the ucl.if it was annualy it would be a problem but every 4yrs isnt bad
English guy here. I’ve enjoyed European dominance in Football since I can remember, but I’m not against the rest of the World getting a look in tbh. Football is a global game; it shouldn’t just be confined to Europe tbf
My problem is you could have a team like Seattle qualify by winning CCL in 2022 last year and by the time the 2025 club world cup comes around they'll have a very different squad.
Every 4 years makes it bigger and more special. The down side is that team rosters change quite a bit even from year to year and the team that qualified most likely will not be the team that plays in the world cup. I'm happy to see this new experiment come to pass.
The four year gap can be quite a long time in club football. World cup qualifiers tend to take place over two years which guarantees in form teams but this club version risks having teams grotesquely out of form. But it's a great idea
All the criticism of CWC is basically europeans not wanting anyone else to get a chance to compete with Europe. The new version of CWC is great and it would be even better if they can make it every 1 or 2 years.
The new Club World Cup format should be a straight knockout tournament. A group stage would be too many games.
Ive always been in favor for a bigger club world cup, I just think it would be a nice variation to see new teams play 😊
Honestly not the worst idea. The four year format would mean it's not a burden on players every summer. Main thing I find so funny is why FIFA are now suddenly keen on the 32 team format but getting rid of it for the World Cup 😅
As well-intentioned this may be for global club football, it's almost definitely just going to become a second Champions League every four years with a sprinkle of some South American teams and the odd upset making it to the latter stages of the tournament
This club world cup will be amazing. Since i was a kid I’ve been saying this should be a thing.
Perfectly packaging, perfect delivery. Clearly did your research. Great video 👌
Playing this tournament on a bi-annual basis would make sense to more accurately reflect the constantly changing reality of club football but I’m afraid it would only motivate FIFA to make the nations World Cup bi-annually as well.
Sure the number of games would increase and so would the burnout. But with the increase in burnout will come more opportunities for all squad players. Probable 2nd/3rd choice players would be able to rack up 15-20 appearances per season. Wouldn't be the worst thing imo.
I'm actually hyped for this, probably the only voices against this come from Europe.
Making this once every 4 years like the world cup was the right decision.
So are we saying that players of successful clubs just don't get breaks/pre seasons anymore then? Season starts in August, play through until May, this tournament starts in June, even if it's done within a month (which normally a 32 team world cup does take a full month) means that players will be off in July, when pre season is going and need to be back at their clubs ready for August again.
I really like this idea. I don't love FIFA exerting more control over the game than it already has, but I am very interested in club football gaining bigger global exposure. I'll never stop supporting my favorite European club, but clubs from around the world getting more exposure is a great thing. I'd love to watch my dad's hometown club Nagoya Grampus getting to play a match against our local NYCFC for example.
I really like the proposed format, makes it easier to take the club world cup seriously. As mentioned by others in comments, it can’t really replace the UCL, since the UCL takes place yearly.
