DIY - Making A Viking Canvas Tent

  • My little boy loves Vikings. And so do I. So I decided to make us a Viking Tent.
    And we love it. My kid also helped me with the sewing part as you will see in the video.
    The construction is pretty simple. I used 2000x150x27mm pieces of lumber, cut to length and ripped in half. The length will depend on the dowels you will find / make for the sides.
    The fabric is coton. You can use any color you want but white seams to be the right choice.
    The tent can be use for LARP. Mine is a one or two kids, but all you need to make it bigger is increase the lenght and width.
    It's a pretty simple project to make, the hardest part being the sewing.
    I hope you will like the video.

    Nice touch letting the kid help. Brilliant idea to sew a sleeve in the material for the horizontal beams! Love this version. Very simple. I'd go another step and drill tiny holes in the pegs, and then they can be tied and attached permanently to the beam, never getting lost. :)

      I used to make a big fuss about servicing my Late Wife's sewing machine (s). Pretty simple, undo the clips, wipe all of the material fluff and loose threads away, wipe clean and oil with Singer Sewing Machine Oil.
      If I wanted to use it, I just told her I was going to give it a run to test it, and I'd give it back to her squeaky clean and running sweetly.
      I still have her two sewing machines and the overlocker, but my new wife is Chinese and a retired surgeon. Everything gets hand sewn and looks like a stitched wound, haha!
      I am the "Bad Uncle" to our friend's two little Daughters (Big Dutch Da, tiny Chinese Mum. They will love this and it will be a good practice run for a tent for me.

      You can get a degree of fireproofing in the fabric (and wood) by soaking it in a solution of hot water and Borax- add borax until it stops dissolving- and let the fabric air dry. And the wood, too...
      I'd waterproof the fabric using linseed oil, but it will require hanging the cloth on a clothesline, fence line, or w.h.y until the oil has hardened... or just set the tent up and let it stand for a few days/ week, or whatever...:
      Don't fold the fabric up because that can cause the heat of 'curing' to build up and start a fire... (the reason woodworkers should put oil soaked rags in a metal trash can if they don't hang them on the fence or w.h.y....)
      Once the linseed oil has set up, you could go the extra mile and rub the cloth with beeswax.
      Vikings coated all the wood on their longboats with a mix of turpentine, linseed oil, and as much shaved beeswax as they could dissolve in the liquid... they only had to retreat the wood very year or two...
      Don't heat up the linseed oil/ turps mix indoors, or close to something flammable...
      That oil/wax mix is good for polishing furniture with and you can prevent mold growth on the polish by adding in some boric acid. (I don't actually know how much... a teaspoon per pint or quart?)
      And one can add lavender oil or w.h.y.. to the polish as well, just because... :-)

    • @RedSmith
      @RedSmith  5 лет назад

      Thank for your comment. I think if you use waterproof fabric it should be ok for a small rain, but not for a stormy weather. But if you let the wooden frame outside all year long, it will eventually turn darker, even with many coat of polyurethane finish or paint on it. If I was you, I'd build one, use waterproof fabric and finish the wood very well, let it out for a few months and decide afterwards :)

      THanks a lot. If the fabric you're using is not resistant to rain, you can waterproof it with a spray. For the cold, nothing much can be done, but a small fire in front of the tent can help. And warm clothing.

    I appreciate the look at how to make it. it may not look quite as nice and it would use a little more materials, but I feel like I could save a whole lot of time just using straight 2x4s on a lot of this. It may not be quite as period, but since it won't be very visible I would probably also use some steel pins instead of wood pegs.

      Pottery barn kids have this tent. But you can make it. There’s a class on Creativebug. It’s very easy.

      Even if I understand why you want to do it, you really shouldn't run away. Trust me, I've done it. It doesn't work.

    Hehe imagine riping down a 2x8 to make 2x4

    • @RedSmith
      @RedSmith  2 года назад

      Hehe imagine paying 10 bucks for a 2x8 and making two 2x4 worth 8 bucks each. Oh wait, better: imagine ripping a 2x8 because they don't sell 2x4 here. Even crazier: imagine watching a free 4:45min video and leaving a nice comment on the project, the idea, the craftsmanship, the video editing, the music choice, in a word, the three days of work it took, instead of trying to be funny with an ignorant comment. Crazy, right?!

      @@RedSmith don't sell 2x4? Where the heck do you live? Lol you still got my sub I actually really liked your video, just found it somewhat humorous. And yes 2x4 lumber is rediculous still, on our crew here in Wisconsin were still paying between 18 and 20 dollars for a sixteen footer.

      I live in France and buying wood here is a really challenge. They have specific dimensions, very high prices and poor type choices. Basically, pine and oak, nothing is straight, everything is too expensive. And it's always been like this...France is not a great country for a wood worker ;)

      @@RedSmith that really sucks man. We have good timber variety in America but it's similar to your situation. Lumber for carpenters like me is cheaper in comparison to "higher quality" materials and even then you have to pick through the batch of it to find suitable lumber for chairs and what not.

      The structure of the tent itself

      @@RedSmith okay, I just had to ask because everybody on RUclips is coming up with Viking camp and Viking tent and Viking house. You saying it's the structure itself actually LED my uninformed self to look up Viking tents and it looks like you are correct sir thanks for letting me know.

      @@rexsterlingbuchanan2929 You're very welcome. I could have put a few horse head carvings to give it a more Viking-ish look but the tent was for my kid and he wanted to keep it simple. Thanks for watching 😊
