- Yesterday, we had the great honor of hosting the incomparable Anna Karina. While she was in the neighborhood, Anna made a stop in our film closet to reminisce about her groundbreaking work with Godard, acting for Agnès Varda in CLEO FROM 5 TO 7, her affection for Charlie Chaplin, and much more.

Rest In Peace, Anna Karina
(1940-2019)
😔
A legend
I've never seen an actress that is so adorable both in her youth and in old age. She always had a naive and childlike quality about her, something that is not easy to find in the actresses of today.
A better substitute concise word for child like is endearing?
@@BuffaloBuffalo-uc6zp perhaps it is. english is not my first language.
Your English is perfect anyway!!
Thanks
Liv Ullmann embodies "adorable in youth as well as in old age" for me.
Those eyes have stood the test of time
BunnyMan456 dat ass did too
Only the eyes.
Jules F. Melo Borges Hell ya those are still a one of a kind pair of BJ eyes
@@golummcsmeagolhomie2396 I thought most cinephiles are not mysgonistic swines but I guess I was wrong.
@@golummcsmeagolhomie2396 She's 80 years old man, give her a break. She's aged to very elegant and respectfully lady, that's more than enough.
"That's me."
anna picking the movies that she was in is truly iconic
I would do the same
Right! Lmao
And the kid
I was just finna say that would be me lmfao!
Everything is "iconic" these days.🙄
Imagine being able to look at a Godard DVD cover and say : “yeah that’s me.”
I almost got to see her in person twice. She was booked for a Film Festival in 2015 or 2016 in Portugal, specifically a viewing of Pierrot le Fou, and it was cancelled. A couple of years later, in early 2019, she was supposed to come for another viewing of Pierrot le Fou but when everyone got there, we were shown a little hand-written note by Anna, saying she had been advised by her doctor not to travel. A couple of months later, in december, she passed. I was so devastated, especially since I almost got to be in her presence… But I’m still deeply appreciative that I get to watch her work and interviews and little gems like this. Forever a fan of Anna. RIP.
Wow thanks for sharing this story. It would have been so amazing to see her. I miss her so much I wish she was still here. She’s one of my favorite actresses ever.
That's incredibly unfortunate. I was lucky to see her in Los Angeles for a restoration screening of BAND OF OUTSIDERS at the TCM Film Festival in 2016. During the Q&A, her effortless charm and flirtatious wit permeated the room, as not even interviewer Ben Mankiewicz could resist smiling. I even hugged and kissed her after the screening, and it was the only time I was ever genuinely nervous about meeting someone. That same week, she appeared at either the New Beverly Cinema or Silent Movie Theatre in Hollywood, which, sadly, I could not attend.
At least you got to share a planet with her for many years. ❤️
Anna Karina's picks:
A Woman Is A Woman (1961) dir. Jean-Luc Godard
[mention] Tonight Or Never (1961) dir. Michel Deville
Made In U.S.A (1966) dir. Jean-Luc Godard
Pierrot le Fou (1965) dir. Jean-Luc Godard
[mentions a cameo in a film within the film] Cleo from 5 to 7 (1962) dir. Agnes Varda
The Kid (1921) dir. Charlie Chaplin
[Also mentions Jacques Demy, Jacque Rivette, Agnes Varda]
It's amazing, isn't it? Even to imagine that this elderly woman had a vibrant beautiful youth one day and me, now 25, is going to turn 80 one day and look back at my 20s with love in my eyes. I hope when I turn 80, I will look back on my 20s and 30s with love and a heart full of sweet memories like Anna does. Rest in peace, beautiful soul. ❤
seeing her talking like this after all those years brings tears to my eyes, especially when she talked about the short film she did with Godard for Varda's Cleo from 5 to 7, it was the most lovely part in the film, I will never forget that little white dress and those big beautiful eyes. She is truly the Queen of The New Wave.
RIP Anna Karina. I'm so very grateful for this video.
she is so precious. i love her so much.
Anna Karina is still a very beautiful woman with those sweet expressive eyes and charismatic personality. She should still be filming. Hey, Jean-Luc!!!! call her again, please.
Oh, I just cried here... She's so lovely!
She still has that flattering lovely manners. God, I love her.
the concept of beauty and time is actually so insane . will always be grateful for letting us witness the talents of young Anna Karina , i hope you had a wonderful youth queen :(( the future generations will continue to talk about you and your timeless beauty 😔 RIP.
I wish this was 10 minutes longer. I love her work.
She's a rock star. A cinematic landmark.
Duuude they should have jean luc godard in here, holy shit I wonder what his picks would be, he's a true legend
i dont think hed ever agree to do one tbh
In Cahiers du Cinéma he has rated these Criterion released films masterpieces: Wild Strawberries, Ugetsu, Ivan the Terrible, 400 Blows, Hiroshima Mon Amour. There's probably plenty of others but these are the ones I could find. Many are rated 3 (on a scale of 0 to 4) but these are all the fours I could find. He even rated Bande à Part a 3, haha.
Thought I'd do a little update with the other 4 stars and 3 stars (2nd highest) that he rated, which may or not be released by Criterion
4 stars: Man of the West, Vertigo, The Quiet American, Rio Bravo, Two Rode Together.
3 stars: Brink of Life, Dreams (Bergman), Deux hommes du Manhattan (interesting, since it's regarded as bottom tier Melville, but this was before the New Wave clique started hating Melville and actually liked him, especially Godard), Middle of the Night, Les Cousins, The Tarnished Angels, Touch of Evil.
Also, he has ranked Louis Malle films at "don't bother watching", since the Cahiers group disliked him. Elevator to the Gallows is rated as a piece of shit by Godard lmaoo
@D2 E2 plz, he was just a jealous ass bitch and it ain't about Godard, calling Orson Welles a hoax, criticising Michelangelo Antonioni he was just a insecure and jealous butthurt director who started bitching about almost anyone who was a better filmmaker. Even Orson Welles criticized Godard but even he said his talents as a director can't be denied. Not like Ingar 'If anyone is a better filmmaker than you and your ego is hurt so much that your ass starts burning of jealousy and your so butthurt you start bitching about them like a 14 yr old kid' Bergman. I am not spreading hate against him but that was the truth. He himself was a pretentious director, and I know you're probably thinking am some asshole who throws that word every 5 minute but am not, I have used that word after lot of consideration. And no hate to you I just get triggered when anyone says read Bergman's criticism, he just a jealous bitch who loved to bitch and moan. And the statements he said about Godard, subjectively speaking, that's exactly, EXACTLY the words I use to describe his films. Once again brother no offense or hate to you but I hate when people say Bergman's criticism was valid, it wasn't.
@D2 E2 who fucking cares what bergman said about godard. if you genuinely dislike godard purely because bergman said something negative about him you're honestly pathetic. make your own opinions.
Please bring "Pierrot le Fou" back in print, Criterion.
And, The Third Man, Army of Shadows.
yes, please!
Studio Canal owns the rights now so its pretty unlikely.
Infametheus I'm really thankful to have recorded The Third Man on DVR.
More Belmondo movies : Le Doulos, That Man from Rio, Fear on the City, Itinerary of a spoiled child, The Professional,...
Why do i have the sneaking suspicion Anna Karina was a cigarette smoker?
I get that suspicion too.
She was a smoker. I saw her in Vivre Sa Vie, she smoked
Because she sounds like Al Pacino here
@@DG-gx4sgThat was the joke.
Queen of french new wave!
Oh yes.
Still has those amazing eyes.
May you Rest in Peace, Karina. You were the greatest and prettiest among the France New Wave associators. Thank you and for Godard for your contribution to the cinema 🙏🏻
the definitive star of the new wave
Vseslav Botkin what about Jean-Pierre Léaud
Belmondo?
And Jeanne Moreau.
all great choices but Karina is still #1 to me
She speaks english so well.
true, but she was actually able to speak english even before she learned french so it's no surprise :)
@@lydiarodgers Does she have any early of her films spoken in English?
She probably knew English before she moved to France plus it's easier for Danes to learn English than it is for French people.
Saw two films with her in them at Cinematheque in Montreal this month as they were featuring films by JEAN-LUC GODARD, and it was really nice seeing her on the big screen - always so charming:)
Man! She's just as enchanting now as she was in Vivre sa vie.
She’s still so lovely!
i guess she already has most of the collection but just needed "the kid". who cannot love anna karina?
Please release 'A Woman is a Woman' in blu-ray format, Criterion! It's my favourite Godard and I hate not having it.
A LIVING LEGEND!
I did a photoshoot with her in her Paris flat in 1967. Spoke three words of English back then, but absolutely lovely as a young woman could ever be. So sad she's gone. Her films will live on of course.
Who are you?
BRING JEAN-LUC GODARD IN THERE!
Just rewatched Band of Outsiders. Such a great film.
I love her so much.
Anna Karina Rest in peace, what a lovely actress until the end.
Thank you for everything! May you rest in peace.
You should have asked her when they will make sequel to "Band of Outsiders".
There was the dreamers
Jean-Paul Belmondo was my first movie-star crush when I was a teenager, it was lovely seeing her pick films they made together.
She was so warm and gentle, such an icon.
Let's get Jeanne Moreau in that closet ASAP.
Tmac well now it sadly will never happen.
This broke my heart.
She's always one of my favorites. It sux that she's no longer with us. I'm sure her taste was impeccable.
@@cibibi Mine too.
I just finished watching Band a Part (Band of Outsiders) for the 1st time. She's brilliant in it! Sad I can't meet her, shake her hand, thank her and ask if we can recreate the Maddison dance.
I wish this was longer.
But also I would like to see Martin Scorsese, Paul Thomas Anderson, Wes Anderson or Quentin Tarantino in the closet.
+brandon thompson Holy shit I had an idea: what if you had all 4 of those guys in the closet at once? And turned it into a feature documentary, where they have to eat lunch and dinner in or outside the closet because they have to take breaks from talking about movies all day.
Oh my good, good Gawd what a thought!
+Theomite I like the idea but Tarrantino would ruin it, he has the tendency to take over the conversation.
@supperandjazz
but I find Tarentino's perspective and passion on cinema very intriguing. They should definitely have him in the closet.
David Lynch
Das Kinophile ENTP oh yeah
She's great! :) Nothing is permanent in this world Fame, Money, Power etc.. All of us will turn into dust, so stay humble, contented and thankful with what you have.
Fuck me, how many cigarettes do you think she's smoked in her life?
56,279
+Infametheus Well she's about 75, so assuming she started smoking around the age of 20 at approx 20 cigarettes per day... I'd say about 400,000 or there abouts.
Golum McSmeagolHomie all of them.
Graham McKemy why is it sad lol people age
Wim Wenders picked her movies! If i were her, i d pick em too!!!
Even in mature age Anna had great charisma. Really nice nature
She is so precious! xx
Got it!
anna karina was the ur-femme to me, the quintessence of beauty. her image is immortal.
Anna is still great 👏👌😘😘😘
most beautiful actress of all time
Pierre Le Fou ravishing masterpiece of the 60s in Godard's long incredible period that ended with his mockery of cinema Detective 1985. Anna was one of the most perfect glitz leads of the period. Damn! She's dead 😢 just hit me....
Such a wonderful woman.
She is so adorable! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
What an amazing person. The films she wrote and directed ought to get more engagement, like Vivre Ensemble (1973)
How does this not have a million plus views?
I absolutely adore her!
is it weird that I'm still in love with her?
The Kid is my favorite Chaplin film too :)
Her smile is still marvelous
Time devours us all, even legends.
Rip legend
What a magical woman!
Thank you for this. She's my favourite screen icon.
Sé MUY BIEN que no soy el único que llora con este vídeo. Cuántos momentos inolvidables
criterion brings out the kid in all of us
R.I.P. Anna Karina. ❤
She was so beautiful in bande a part!!
What a joyfully person
Rest in peace, Anna. :(
Get Godard into that closet!
A beautiful and talented woman.
If you look up "Gallic charm", it would have her picture for the definition.
Rest Easy Angel 🖤
Su sonrisa y esos ojos resplandecientes se quedarán con nosotros.
omg my queen I miss her
she was so beautiful
the way she moves.... so special
How cute is she, eternal charm.
I thought Pierrot Le Fou was out of print. Has it come back in?
+Mr. Veteran Yeah, dang, I'd really like to nab it, want to see all Criterion has of Godard on Blu.
+Mizuru Souten I found a copy on ebay last year & the price was around $40, so still reasonable provided you're willing to be patient.
Thanks for the tip.
True, but its in their closet. Does that mean it's coming back, or do they like to keep spare copies of OOP stock for whatever reason?
+JohnnyFriendly I picked up a used (in excellent condition) copy of Criterion's A Woman Is A Woman(complete with booklet) on ebay for $30-which is what it sold for originally.
She is so cool and classy.
It would be nice if Criterion released Anna's directorial debut VIVRE ENSEMBLE (1973), which still longs for more recognition worldwide. M6 Video put it out on Blu-Ray in 2017, but no subtitles.
Watched this just after watching Pierrot Le Fou. Same eyes and smile here :)
and i'm crying now
cute she picks so many of her films
Rest in peace!
Forever Anna!
Happy birthday anna what a beauty icon
i love her sm :(
She still had those beautiful eyes.
What a legend
THAT'S anna karina??? (well, she IS 75).
Are there any videos of her speaking in Danish or any other language besides English and French?
This answer might come a bit late but yes. She speaks german in the movie "Chinese Roulette" (Fassbinder) very gorgeous accent and actually very good German. She learned it just for the filming in 3 weeks.
I LOVE HER.
She's aged alright in my opinion. Just her voice. But what are you going to do
RIP anna karina
We need Jean-Pierre Léaud in the Criterion closet now!
R.i.p anna :( 0:44 :(
Im crying
