Cléo from 5 to 7 is one of the highest regarded films of the French New Wave, which is perhaps the most famous film movement of the 20th Century. This ain’t obscure.

You've missed another small detail in the shift, at 6:00 when she looks at herself in the mirror she says "Je ne peux même pas lire ma propre peur" which translates literally to "I can't even READ my own fear" and the writings on the mirror are in mandarin (I think), as if her reflection became foreign language to her, she can't read herself anymore.

Whenever I see "happy ____ noises" or "sad ____ noises" I can only picture a face slobbering all over itself as it makes nasally honking sounds.
I like how in several scenes we see Cleo through a glass like in the store and train cart. How we see Cleo but also see reflections of us looking back at us.
Might also be a metaphor for how she feels commodified and simply like a "product" to be seen through a store window
Or how men see women (in the beginning at least) 💔

The tarot card Death, despite understably feared, is not a card meaning the end permanently. The card respresents closing one door and opening another. It fits the theme of this film really well!

I’ve thought about it a lot over the years and I think Cleo from 5 to 7 is probably the greatest of all French New Wave movies and probably the best movie of the 1960s... which is a tall fucking order

Wow, I already thought of Cleo de 5 a 7 as an irrefutable masterpiece; I was taken by: it's themes os existentialism, the male gaze, destiny, the mesmerising cinematography and the music by Michel Legrand. But you managed to find meaning in symbolisms that went all over my head

I'm far from an expert of arts, but this is one of the few older films I've ever seen. After seeing your analysis about it here, I'm keen to watch it again with a new perspective that I didn't see the first time. Thanks for teaching me and many other about art, and opening up a world of emotions in the process.

omg i looove agnes varda’s movies and documentaries and i am so happy that nerdwriter made a (presumably) fascinating video essay about it :)
Cleo de 5 a 7 is by far her best film, but she made a lot of great narrative films that were criminally underappreciated.
But her true call was definitely documentary filmmaking, some of the most vivid and joyful documentaries I've ever seen.
That moment Florence felt free, I felt her joy within me. Which is big as I haven’t felt joy in a while. I simply must watch this film with my sister, we both adore French films

This channel is VASTLY more successful than my 9k channel so my question was angled at how other creators avoid seeing themselves primarily through RUclips metrics. How they break free from being the object observed toward being the subject observing.

I fell in love with French cinema and culture because of Agnes and her husband Jacques Demy. is one of my favorite movies ever, that I still find time to watch at least once a year. Thank you for the beautiful essay, you have never failed to amuse me with your ways of analyzing things. I don't dare to call myself a cinephile yet, but your videos sure make me appreciate movies and art, in general, even more than I did before.

one of my fav movies from my fav director
yesterday there was this really pretty girl in the train sitting in front of me.. she started with brushing and spraying her hair using her phone camera as a mirror.. and even after that she couldn't have three minutes passed without having her looks checked in her phone.. after this video I won't judge her anymore.. maybe it was the last day of her life and she needed to make sure she is still pretty!

Wow! I subscribed because I found some really great thought provoking video essays about some films and other pieces of art that I admired. But this channel has introduced me to some things I might not have ever discovered otherwise, like Tarkovsky or this.
While watching this video, I was reminded of the following lyrics from the song 'Jo Bhi Main' by Irshad Kamil, taken from the film Rockstar:
"Maine Yehi Socha Hai Aksar
Tu Bhi Main Bhi Sabhi Hain Sheeshe
Khud Hi Ko Hum Sabhi Mein Dekhein

This roughly translates to:

Lovely as always, Nerdwriter. I agree that women face this challenge more than men, but certainly not exclusively. I was just ruminating earlier today on the way others’ expectations of me define my behaviors and even my beliefs about myself. What a serendipitous video to pick for the day!
Agreed but note that he says that women face these challenges even more so than men.
It reminds me of the Japanese saying (I'm paraphrasing), we wear 3 masks - 1 to show to world, 1 to show our close friends, and 1 we rarely show anyone including our own selves. Each of those masks are influenced by others .. which is why most people are afraid to see their final mask.

Keep on truckin' Mr Nerdwriter.This is great. Your videos so often point out stuff I haven'[t thought about or analysed. For instance: I used your Emily Dickinson (Tell all the truth but tell it slant) vid in class a few months (or years? Crikey!) ago. The false ending caught them cold and led to much hillarity and - finally - an appreciation of how intentially multilayed poetry can be. The poets actually mean all those laers of meaning (and they're not be just a fiction made up by English teachers who want to keep their jobs).

Found out about this movie and Varda in Lauren Elkin's Flâneuse (highly recommend if these themes interest you). She has an essay about Varda, Cleo and La Pointe Courte. I don't recall her talking about the mirrors though cool detail
