I don't care if people mime for a video, as long as they can actually play it. We all know how difficult it is to play a complicated piece of music perfectly most of the time.
@@krvnjrcbs because as i said, it's a dificult piece to play. I know I've played things before that were very hard and then had dificulty playing it again properly.
@@krvnjrcbs then you can't trust any guitarist in any video you' ever seen because they all mime in music videos. I do have a problem with people speeding up songs to a tempo they cant play, but I have no problem with them recording something then miming it for a video.
I know the guy, he's the singer/guitarist of Unprocessed, great band with great live performances. Honestly I'm pretty upset about this vid, it's clearly sped up, you can see that it's fake, but the biggest upset thing, that his hands play something else what we hear...it's not even miming, it's sorta 'air guitar with partial miming'... Other thing that these modern poliphya style pop/shred songs would sound much better in a slower versions. A lot of details disappear with this fast tempo, there's not enough 'air' breathing in the composition, it's just a bit chaotic and hurried.
It makes me sad, because he is an awesome player. No doubt. It’s ok to be 90% of what he puts in these videos - that’s still world class. Juicing that extra 10% just kills it for me

Charles is an extremely sick guitar player. I dont know if he actually uses room audio during his playthroughs, but he does NOT speed his videos up, and he can play everything he writes. I think he may just use the most polished audio so it sounds the best. The point is, he CAN do it.
He's actually a great guitarist, why does he feel the need to do stuff like this? Ruining his credibility for no reason, and the internet never forgets, ever.
Manuel has been clean for almost 2 years now since this video came out. Plays much of his content on livestreams and shows his multiple outtakes at the end of RUclips clips.
Is it just me or do I have the impression that there are a lot of guitarists out there who are jealous? This guy is an incredible guitar player. Studio work these days is cut and paste on all major productions.
Itchika Nito does the same thing, the people who defend it can't seem to grasp the concept that the "fake speed" is what makes them famous to begin with, THAT is the problem. Play any of these things at 60% speed like they actually do IRL and they're a channel with 200 subs because no one cares.
The video is definitely sped up his movements are to abrupt and „glitchy“. Wether that reflects the recording is sped up is another question but it’s likely cause why speed up a mimed playthrough if you can play it at speed?
@@LeviClay there's examples you've pointed out anyway in regards to the inconsistencies with what he's mimed and what's actually sounding in the track. Then there's others such as inconsistencies with the method of sweep picking with use of economy picking instead of sweeping an arpeggio yet the video shows it economy picked at a fast sweep speed and what you hear is a regular sweep. There's also then inconsistencies with the mute sounds and the strings he's actually hitting in the video and other small things you can pick up with enough knowledge on the techniques used. I've been teaching for over a decade for multiple instruments at an advanced level as well as being one of the uni examiners here. There's no doubt in my mind that it's mimed, let alone that the footage doesn't match the sound, let alone the speed. This all said his creative process is definitely admirable with the concepts he's created. I just wish he'd properly respond to the criticism rather than throw up a wall.
Unrelated but harp harmonics exists outside the 12 frets above the fretted note method, tapping them is tricky but possible with practice e.g. fret Cmaj7 and harp or tap(index is easiest) harmonic a Gmaj7. Harder is a Fmaj7 over Cmaj7 which will sound out a Cmaj7 two octaves up.
ronaldessi well he's now an Ibanez artist and on tour with polyphia, and as someone who saw him live twice I can say that at least the unprocessed songs and his clip Dead Rose are all legit.
Hats off to you, you're the only one that I've seen so far that go to this extent to dissect his videos. His case is a little different than the usual GP midi cases, since his audio sounds authentic to me but others are saying it sounds sped up. There's just no way to prove his audio is sped up as far as I know. Thanks for doing this, it's amazing that you could transcribe that note for note. I love learning by ears myself and that's just inspirational. Also, I had a hunch that he mimed his videos. He used to upload raw clips, only recently he started miming which was very obvious since he uploaded a Childish Gambino arrangement a few months ago. I don't have a problem with miming honestly, since a lot of other professionals do it. "Official playthrough" in their bedroom but it turns out they're just miming to their album version so I have came to live with it. Still somewhat disappointed when an official playthrough that I have been waiting for months is just a mimed playthrough but it is what it is.
*"There's just no way to prove his audio is sped up as far as I know"* The sweep arpeggio is the big tell, it's just obscenely clean, cleaner than all the real best of the best non-fakers. So either this dude is literally the best guitarist in the world or he speeds some of his shit up. Maybe not the whole thing, but definitely that little bit
@@DingusMcBrungus I agree. Only a few players in the world have had the right hand to pick those patterns. The right hand and left hand move jerky and not in sync with one another relative to each other and the sound. Do I think this guy is really faster than Shawn Lane? No.

He plays like this is in person. He was practicing in he customer waiting lounge as asked him about his playing. He plays like this. He is nice to listen to
as a video editor, noticing small things like missing frames without what would be the resulted motion blur (esp from this type of camera), its very easy and clear to see that its sped up
@@foivospk so in a good camera, you want to have a natural looking motion blur (not too much, and not nothing). to achieve a natural blur, your shutter speed should be about double your framerate. now this looks like it was filmed on a phone, which does not have shutter controls (some really new ones do have such controls on photo mode but not video). in any regard, a phone or a cheap camera doesn't have a mechanical shutter, which isnt too much of an issue for your average snaps and stuff etc. but it does look and feel different. anyway, having a fast shutter speed can eliminate motion blur, which makes footage look a bit more janky since its not mimicing your eyes, but thats not what is happening here the part where he plays the fast choppy muted chord or whatever, his hand was moving too fast to be able to see it smooth right? well go take your phone, set it to video mode and wave your hand in front of it as fast as you can. see how it gets blurrier the faster your hand moves? cheap cameras and phones etc cant capture such speed with absolutely no motion blur because the shutter would have to be set really fast. now where i live, the standard framerate for video is PAL 25, so thats 25 images per second. 60 or 50fps is a lot smoother because you have more frames in the middle to fill in the gaps of one second. makes sense? now if your framerate is standard, say NTSC 24 or PAL 25, the motion of your hand moving as fast as it can up is gonna be blurry at the appropriate shutter speed (50). if you double the frames in a second, you gotta double the shutter to get the natural blur. NOW, when you capture video in say 24fps, and you speed it up to double the speed in an editing software, your playback is at 24fps, but you have to condense 2 seconds worth of 24fps footage into one (so turning 48 frames into 24 for the same second). what this does is that it has to cut out frames from the original recording, which will make not look as smooth and jankier with little to no natural motion blur. in the section where he plays those really quick chords, you can see the lack of frames a normal framerate would capture at its natural playback, which you can notice quite easily if you slow the video down and know what to look for tl;dr cheaper cameras and phones would generate more motion blur, while this (appearing to be filmed on a phone), appears the opposite, and also leaves artifacts of post edited time remapping
@Satyam K R Agreed with everything this comment says, doesn't really seem like an issue cause the guy is clearly skilled and is just doing it to make his work have better quality

This is a very good advertisement of Manuel Gardner Fernandes :) All the Best Manu!!! I don`t care about what people say - let the first one throw the stone who never did a mimed video! His music is brilliant. btw. Manu is doing a live streams so everyone could see his fast playing
The guitar isn’t plugged in. What could possibly be the point of analyzing it further? Cool to see the differences but like...there’s nothing to prove.
I'll be honest, when I first watched this it truly annoyed me. I respect your opinion and your profession, your work impresses me, but this seemed kinda pointless. when a band does a guitar playthough or music video, they aren't playing their riffs and solos note for note, bassists included, when a vocalist does a music video they aren't singing they're usually lip syncing, when a drummer does a playthough, a single, a music video, no matter how you listen to it there will be random fills bc they improvise, when you play these songs long enough you change stuff on your own time even if it's already tracked and produced or anything. his guitar wasn't plugged in, he wasn't trying to demonstrate tabs, it was just for a video. he does streams, he plays stuff live, you can see how he plays yourself but he just pasted a full mix over a video of him playing guitar, yea he probably missed a couple notes, yes the harmonics were wrong, I get your point, but again I don't see a reason to complain. idk maybe I'm missing part of your thought process but I don't mean any disrespect by saying this it's just how I look at it
@@LeviClay that's a very good point but like you've been told 6k times, his guitar isn't even plugged in. you couldn't pick one of his videos where it's plugged in and you can see the DI being tracked in the background to call him out? that would've made all of this more valid imo
Hey! As someone who "transcribes" video game music by memory (I haven't studied music "yet", I learn everything by ear), I don't have an issue with mimicking if you're doing a music video or anything on that vein, but this is ridiculous. I didn't knew guitarists were on IG doing this stuff (yeah, I'm isolated when it comes to social media), trying to one-up themselves speeding up and overdubbing vids! If you wanna show your technique or level there's no best way than recording everything in one shot and using the camera mic IMO! I love that you're shedding a light on this topic! It makes me a bit sad that people actually believe this kinda stuff is possible. There's a lot of us out there still practicing to become better players and tracking our progress every single day and these "musicians" just use whatever means necessary to show themselves as better players than they actually are, and gain followers in the meantime! Sad times. BTW it's really interesting to watch and see a professional transcriber show some of the techniques used when transcribing stuff. It's very similar to what I do but I bet you have a foundation on theory and all that jazz. Maybe I can learn new tricks from you! Subbed!
well mimed isnt something i absolutely dispise, cause its not like he's miming it while in stage, the thing i mostly hate, is if they cant play it that cleanly and that perfect in that speed, like the recording
Levi at 8:10 look at the 14th fret high E, it doesn't slide up, it stays on the 14th fret it shows in the tab in the fourth bar he slides up to 15. Just something I wanted to add :)
@@LeviClay just after the 6:00 when he goes into the arpeggios and then the slide he's showing slide movement from the tap on 14th-16th twice in a row while you've tabbed it only happening once. As well as the 16th fret being the wrong spot. Then there's also the shadow hovering from his finger that's not actually touching the string for that whole process.
Said he never speeds up, but did say he pre records the parts as in uses punch ins for cleanless, and plays a playthrough pretty much. Also i belive you tabbed the tapping sequence a bit wrong, the part where it looks like he bars is actually him playing e g b then 2 open strings b and e there for he didnt have to hit the 5th fret, and where it looks like he tapped a b he could tap the d instead of playing it on the 3rd fret. The way he played it would work but i could not see it all the way. Harmonic thing may have been a playthrough mistake where he forgot what harmonics he played lol.
Tapping part is " e g b sweep to actually a quick pointer finger swap to d on 2nd string if you listen closely, then an open e to 3 7 hammer on e, to 14 15 14 slide on e to hammer of 7 3, then hammer on to 5 on b to g string 12th fret tap (i said d in original comment sorry its 5 3am) to tap off 4 hammer on 7 on g string. He did say in his most recent ig post that he pre records his stuff to give you the best quality and not because he can't play it. I personally don't see anything wrong with that. If you look at a bunch of guitar playthroughs on yt they're obviously pre recorded and mimed not because they can't play it, but because they want it to be sonically or visually appealing. Again, I see nothing wrong with that but I'm sure you guys are gonna find something to complain about.
Yeah agreed, that's been the standard forever. People don't complain about how in music videos people aren't playing the instruments. When you watch a playthrough you're looking to see how the instrument is played, it doesn't affect you at all if it's actually being recorded live in that video. If anything, I'd rather it not be, because It sounds better otherwise, so the player can make it perfect and double/quad track it. I gaurentee no one who's not a musician would care at all, and would probably rather have it like that for a more enjoyable experience.
@@BungleJoogie68 Dude my point is that playthrough videos usually don't even have live audio anyway. They play along to a studio track to demonstrate the guitar parts and what is being played. Almost every artist in this genre does that. They are not fake because of it.
@@BungleJoogie68 well his guitar isn't plugged in on his videos so he shouldn't have to tell you that its pre recorded and mimed, that's common sense so it doesn't matter if he said it now, then, or 10 years from now all you have to do is your eyes. He also meant best quality in terms of audio, which is what anyone with context clues would know (as he mentioned throwing crazy compression and what not on the audio). He's also recording the videos on a phone, phone cameras give off crazy motion blur. There's no way he'd edit his face and hair to move normally and program his hands. I recently uploaded a quick video on insta of the clean thumping arpeggios in "animals as leaders - physical education" and on one of the upstrokes my camera made my hand glitch and it looks weird, but I sure as hell don't even know how to speed anything up and I played with no backing track straight out of a shitty Marshall amp. He plays in unprocessed, an ACTIVELY touring band, and plays all of his stuff up to speed with no problem
During the arpeggio that you show at 6:13 I can hear an additional note after that B on the third string, which would make it a 7-note passage, ending on the B on the first string. I think it's a C on the third string that's missing, to be specific. To be fair, you did say you didn't want to waste a lot of time into making this transcription, hence you may have missed that in a hurry, it's just something that I thought is noteworthy. Cheers!
I supported Manuel and his band Unprocessed on a date in early October with my band and boy, when they soundchecked he played the exact same riffs he plays on the gram. Believe me or not but this guy can play this things for real. Also note his recent ig post where he makes a really good statement.
You are aware that there’s a reason personal testimony is considered the most unreliable form of evidence yes? We don’t care about your anecdotes. Answering simply yes, or no... Am I incorrect about anything in this video?
@@LeviClay I took several videos at the gig that I could upload if you desire. But I think since Manuel did that himself yesterday on the gram there is no need to. To be honest you are *not* incorrect in your video and certainly have a brilliant ear and eye (clearly better than I could ever hope for) to detect the obvious, that Manuel prerecorded his videos. But (don't take this personal please) this reply of yours right here kind of feels a bit stuck-up and disrespectful. Like "look at me how well I uncovered Manuel miming on Instagram". @@LeviClayThere's no way you are actually this stupid. He saw you uploaded a video abt manuel miming, possibly clicked on it just to say who cares because he finds u making a whole video about it stupid. HOW DOES THAT INVALIDATE HIS POINT??

@@SimonAspsund sure, that was my point. I understand that many people have accused him of speeding his videos up, but I actually don't think he does. But he absolutely prerecords stuff lick by lick that there's no way he can play that clean and then mimes as though he does. Really silly if you ask me, because he's a great player - there's just no need for all this extra stuff (other than selling JTC packages of course!)
@@LeviClay oh so he actually said that he pre records every lick? But hey, I mean, I understand why people do that. It's soon 2020. Everything on the internet has to be inhumanly perfect for people to like it nowadays. That f***ing sucks.
I'll bet this guitar player never expected anyone to dissect his video like this. 😆 On the rare occasion I post a video of me actually playing, I prefer miming over a pre-recorded track because I don't have a great set up for recording live. When I've posted live audio of my playing, it sounds like shit. This is music, I want it to sound the best I can make it.
Just like most things on the internet, people feel like the “real” thing isn’t good enough, even when it’s awesome, so they enhance it to a place where it becomes impossible and fake and it warps our perception of what’s possible IRL.
For the tap arpeggio in the 4th bar, he even "plays" a Bb-B slide from the G string 3rd/4th fret before going into the rest of the arpeggio. Listen to the "du ba dubaduba duba .....". And there's not a slide either. And it's not 3rd fret - open B string - 5th fret B string (or open high E string) either, because you can hear the slide, not to mention the lack of volume difference you'd have with a fretted note into a picked open string. Just a minor transgression of an otherwise excellent analysis :)
Dude you are literally a genius I remember watching your per Nilsson transcription but it’s like the way you can hear and sing perfectly is wild I know I wouldn’t ever to be able to even after years of trying lol
It’s not about whether he pre recorded and then mimed over the top. It’s a misrepresentation. It’s fraud. He should, at least, be able to look like he’s playing what we hear, but he can’t. Watch this whole video. He’s nowhere near the 12th fret harmonics that come out on the audio. He’s actually practised these movements. Maybe he knows the theory but can’t pull of the speed that he wants people to believe he can. Is he selling services off the back of this fake playing? It’s a serious issue, and it can’t be a bad thing that Levi is highlighting this, and hopefully giving fraudsters something to worry about. Judging by some of the comments defending fraud, I wonder if guitar auto-tune may be the next big thing 🤭
Celemony Melodyne is what these Fools are using after to fix their mistakes. Studios these days rely on this software because people cant play instruments anymore or sing properly.

I made some specific comments about how you could clearly see in his DAW that he wasn't recording, and could see the comped track with different parts in it. After that he stopped showing his DAW and has his screen off.

Itchika Nito does the same thing, the people who defend it can't seem to grasp the concept that the "fake speed" is what makes them famous to begin with, THAT is the problem.
Play any of these things at 60% speed like they actually do IRL and they're a channel with 200 subs because no one cares.
Not true, seen ichika and Manuel live. They play it at full speed pretty much perfectly.
The video is definitely sped up his movements are to abrupt and „glitchy“. Wether that reflects the recording is sped up is another question but it’s likely cause why speed up a mimed playthrough if you can play it at speed?
my gut also tells me it's sped up - but there's no way I'm stating that as a fact because I can't prove it... but I can prove that it's mimed.
@@LeviClay You can also tell by the light flickering on some of his videos.
The video is so obviously sped up it's silly. Humans don't move like that. Why is this even up for debate?
Levi Clay I totally understand your point.

@@DingusMcBrungus I agree. Only a few players in the world have had the right hand to pick those patterns. The right hand and left hand move jerky and not in sync with one another relative to each other and the sound. Do I think this guy is really faster than Shawn Lane? No.

as a video editor, noticing small things like missing frames without what would be the resulted motion blur (esp from this type of camera), its very easy and clear to see that its sped up
@@gigafuq8751 cant that be the result of a bad camera (not arguing just asking )
@@foivospk so in a good camera, you want to have a natural looking motion blur (not too much, and not nothing). to achieve a natural blur, your shutter speed should be about double your framerate. now this looks like it was filmed on a phone, which does not have shutter controls (some really new ones do have such controls on photo mode but not video). in any regard, a phone or a cheap camera doesn't have a mechanical shutter, which isnt too much of an issue for your average snaps and stuff etc. but it does look and feel different. anyway, having a fast shutter speed can eliminate motion blur, which makes footage look a bit more janky since its not mimicing your eyes, but thats not what is happening here
the part where he plays the fast choppy muted chord or whatever, his hand was moving too fast to be able to see it smooth right? well go take your phone, set it to video mode and wave your hand in front of it as fast as you can. see how it gets blurrier the faster your hand moves? cheap cameras and phones etc cant capture such speed with absolutely no motion blur because the shutter would have to be set really fast.
now where i live, the standard framerate for video is PAL 25, so thats 25 images per second. NOW, when you capture video in say 24fps, and you speed it up to double the speed in an editing software, your playback is at 24fps, but you have to condense 2 seconds worth of 24fps footage into one (so turning 48 frames into 24 for the same second). what this does is that it has to cut out frames from the original recording, which will make not look as smooth and jankier with little to no natural motion blur. in the section where he plays those really quick chords, you can see the lack of frames a normal framerate would capture at its natural playback, which you can notice quite easily if you slow the video down and know what to look for
tl;dr
cheaper cameras and phones would generate more motion blur, while this (appearing to be filmed on a phone), appears the opposite, and also leaves artifacts of post edited time remapping

Hey!
We will always need people like you
He did say in his most recent ig post that he pre records his stuff to give you the best quality and not because he can't play it.
It's not the miming in this guys case, so much as the fact it's clearly sped up
@@BungleJoogie68 Dude my point is that playthrough videos usually don't even have live audio anyway.
During the arpeggio that you show at 6:13 I can hear an additional note after that B on the third string, which would make it a 7-note passage, ending on the B on the first string. I think it's a C on the third string that's missing, to be specific. And there's not a slide either. And it's not 3rd fret - open B string - 5th fret B string (or open high E string) either, because you can hear the slide, not to mention the lack of volume difference you'd have with a fretted note into a picked open string.

Or perhaps it’s that I’ve worked as a transcriber with the best players in the world for over a decade? 🤔
@@LeviClay nah your just jealous 🤣
@@josephokelly5135 of?
@@LeviClay he's plays, you transcribe. Enough said?
@@josephokelly5135 nope, I transcribe, I write, and I play… 3000 people at the next gig 🤷
It sounds like we found the actual jealous one 😂
Dude you are literally a genius I remember watching your per Nilsson transcription but it’s like the way you can hear and sing perfectly is wild I know I wouldn’t ever to be able to even after years of trying lol
I mean... Isn't this the dude who didn't even have his guitar plugged in
There are harmonics on the 12th fret and 7th which is what he went to
A fact check on Ichika would be very appreciated.
No way his videos are recorded live in those insta clips, would love to be proved wrong though.
Idk as a guitar player, ichikas playing doesn’t seem mimed or sped up
Ichika is legit as fuck
I am amazed by your analysis. Great work and I enjoyed it very much.
he just addressed everything on instagram, and i’ve never stanned harder
same LOL. this guy hasn-t addressed it yet lol
Can't wait for the Nikey deal.
He hasnt uploaded any live footage of him playing these insta riffs
Jango Bango they’re on his instagram . top three most recent posts @manuel.gardener.fernandes
Judging by some of the comments defending fraud, I wonder if guitar auto-tune may be the next big thing 🤭
he is selling a guitar course + i heard he just won some award lol.
Celemony Melodyne is what these Fools are using after to fix their mistakes. Studios these days rely on this software because people cant play instruments anymore or sing properly.
I think it’s been a thing for a long time already
Why can’t they just play it at regular speed so stupid and they are destroying music
Guitar & bass is autotuned pretty regularly in some genres
His response to somebody calling him out for speeding it up was "It's a shitty phone camera", so he's trying to claim that he plays it live.
Shayan C well as someone who has seen him play live as a supporting act for animals as leaders, I can tell you that he can play the unprocessed songs legit, but admittedly some instagram videos do look weird.
@@ferrisconfines I don't deny that he's an incredible guitarist and certainly a million times better than me, but he clearly speeds up many of the videos that he uploads on instagram and tries to act like he can actually play them. He never plays those riffs live except for the ones which don't seem sped up.
It’s all about polish right? He’s a great guitarist. No doubt. He can play... he just boosts that perception by 10% on Instagram... who’s going to notice when he’s live?
Shayan C yeah he actually released a statement on his latest post, and tbh I believe what he says, but it's a matter of opinion I guess.
@@ferrisconfines Speaking of opinions, it's interesting that everyone who makes videos for a living knows a fake when they see it, but fans double down on denial because fans I guess.

@@LeviClay Im extremely impressed by your transcribing talent. Very cool stuff man.
If you ask him he will play it live ?
Man this video aged well.. Yikes.
Witch hunts are a drag.
How? Did it turn out I was wrong?
Arpeggio at 6:56. Directly after hitting the B on the 4th fret of the G string I can clearly hear him (sliding into or hammering on) a C (5th fret on G).
Yep.
also everyone on jared’s side. make sure to check out his live performances, he can do it just like the vids!
Cat playing guitar On a guitar it’s not slower dude. you can literally see it
he's "live" performing to a crowd with material that's different. That does little to validate his prior Instagram video footage.
@Cat playing guitar On a guitar Then what's the point? What atrocity is he committing? I play classical guitar. I play some difficult pieces very well at home. Guess how many other people are in the room watching me? none. No clue what you mean by "sketchyer" but I assume you mean just not as clean. Yes that's something called nerves. It tends to happen when you play live. I find it ridiculous that now people will have to validate themselves by posting something like "oh by the way i prerecorded this" in every single post to avoid having these online guitar warriors attack them with their virtual pitchfork.
@@Blackreapxr Exactly, the guys guitar isn't even plugged in on the clip.Leaching to get views this is what it is.
@Ben Welch the sound check videos he's posted recently even appear odd... Theres one with people talking at the end that sounds sped up
if you are a very experienced and skilled guitarist you clearly understand that what you hear is extremely edited, cause there's not way you play this stuff so clear and precise, but maybe one day guitar will evolve that way, who knows... I'd love to hear this stuff plugged to an amp with no computer around
It can be played this clear and precise it just takes practice and a lot of takes which he doesn't have the time to do for random insta vids
@@SoilKilonova you don't know what you're talking about
@@fedplaysguitar Are you gonna explain how i have no clue or just say i do?
Omg, just check his band and check how they play live - Unpreocessed
He records his guitar parts in sections. Speeds them up. Then makes a play through video thats sped up as well to match the music
I made some specific comments about how you could clearly see in his DAW that he wasn't recording, and could see the comped track with different parts in it. After that he stopped showing his DAW and has his screen off.
This is damaging to newer players because I can tell you full stop at least a few kids just starting on guitar have seen his videos and gone "I'll never be that good" and quit all together.
This creates a bit of unearned praise because so many of the comments I see on his videos are people saying "Wow amazing that he can do this in real time he's like a robot!!".
