Nowadays a lot of people - especially newer fans - only expect reactions with Floor but the entire Nightwish catalogue is wonderful so there's no wrong way to go :) Marko and Tarja always were such a powerful dynamic, Tarja with her dark, full, classical vocals and Marko with that bright, gritty voice which blended incredibly well together!! They sang a couple of songs together back then and released a new song together just this week ❣ Another great song from the first era with these two is "Nightwish - Slaying The Dreamer (DVD End Of An Era)" that one is really heavy!

Welcome to your first performance with Tarja Turunen. This was her last performance with Nightwish. She got fired this same night. Not for under performing, that is for sure! Normally I would not go into detail about such a thing, but this left scars that resonated in their music for years. Tarja became a victim of their success. Traveling in a tourbus for 18 months straight was not for her. Especially with people smoking and partying all night long, while she had to spare her voice. She announced she would leave the band, but was not in a hurry to go. A deal was made: Tarja would do 2 more tours with the band and then they would part ways on a friendly basis. For those last tours Tarja would fly-in, fly-out whenever possible. The deal did not work out at all. Tarja was never there when important decisions had to be made. The first tour got extended by 4 months without asking Tarja and then Tarja sent her manager to have the extra (sold out) concerts cancelled. After that the rest of the band decided Tarja would not go on that second tour. This was the final concert on the tour. They fired her with a nasty letter. The trauma resonated for years.
Oh my God! That is crazy, I had no idea. I can understand how maintaining such a voice for optimal performance every night takes a lot of care. I hope now they are on good terms. Thanks a lot for providing these details. I had no idea this was her last show with them. Very bittersweet.

It was her classically trained dark operatic voice that helped create the genre of symphonic metal. Your previous Nightwish reaction was with their third singer Floor Jansen. This performance is my second favorite version and the star for me is Marko's gritty and dark Phantom. IMHO he is the best Phantom I have ever heard. Although they mostly did this song at the request of Tara there are other songs that better showcase her beautiful dark operatic voice, including The Siren, Planet Hell, Nemo and Forever Yours. I find her wobbily operatic voice, especially in the final section a bit much. The ban fired Tarja right after this concert in a very public and nasty split and didn't perfrom this song again for 17 years. In 2019 Floor is approached to be one of the singers on the Dutch show Beste Zangers. She was mildly interested until she found out that Henk Poort, a famous Dutch musical theater singer, was going to be on the show. Henk is famous for being the original Phantom in the Dutch stage production of the Phantom of the Opera. Floor had seen him in that role when she was a teenager and was a big fan so she jumped at the chance to be on the show and sing with one of her idols. The show consists of a number of Dutch singers and each week one of them is featured and the other singers sing songs that they have done or are important to them. Henk was the featured singer on the first episode and Floor sang the very first song, Vilja Lied from the Merry Widow operetta. Floor was mostly unknown in her native Netherlands where metal music is not popular. She totally nailed the song and blew everyone away. The last show of the season is all duets and Floor asked Henk to sing Phantom of the Opera with her. He agreed on condition that the next time Nightwish was performing in Amsterdam he would be able to perform it with them. It uses the Nightwish arrangement but more rock and less metal and Floor uses a more musical theater vocal approach with more of a straight tone and less vibrato. In November of 2022 Nightwish was finalling performing in Amsterdam and many fans were wondering after many years of delay would they do the Phantom of the Opera with Henk.
