I suggest you read the book instead or before watching this movie, because although it looks visually stunning but otherwise makes a mess of the story omitting a lot of things (a two hours long adaptation is too short even for rendering the first twelve chapters of Genji monogatari) and taking too many liberties with the book for my liking.
Can we talk about the animation for a second? Wow, this is one of the prettiest animation I’ve ever seen in my life, I love how it kind of resembles traditional ukiyo-e painting and everything is highly detailed. The movement are very graceful and elegant, very suitable for a story about heian royalty. I wish we could see more animation like this. I’m astonished that this was made pre-digital animation.
Genji monogatari is the oldest Japanese Novel written by a lady that served royal Queen and the story continued even after her death ie. her daughter did last parts. It's about a guy who gets laid or try to get laid with 13+ girls/womens. Genji was a illegitimate son of King of that period and was denied royal privilege. His mom was beautiful (low social status), thus he was born beautiful (handsome ?) And when goes to Palace he was not welcomed but he was able to steal heart of Queen (stepmom). They had affairs and some even believe that some offsprings of Kings were actually of Genji. (Who knows) But given the circumstances, that affairs can't be successful thus he goes on to get laid with bunch of different women and girls. He goes to remote place and brings little child so that he can raise her to become his ideal love ( stepmom ). But he dies before he could realize all of his twisted dreams. If the author hadn't died before story ended, the ending would have been very different and Genji could have gotten all of his lustful dream. I am like biggest fan of this novel and thr original author. Btw don't forget it was written 1000 years ago, thus Marrying a little girl was very much legal and moralized at that time. Heck even 20 years before , 13+ age girls could legally have sex with adults in japan. And also, it was written by Female as a bed time story for another Female, hence the Playboy nature of Main character, Genji.
Murasaku (the girl he kidnapped) was like 9 or 10 when she was taken away by him, too young even for the time period, and Murasaki's servants are clearly uncomfortable with the situation
Everyone is just disappointed this isn't a story about lesbians and don't care to do a proper research of the Novel and its contest. So thank you very much for sharing your wisdom.
Genji Monogatari was also chick-lit of the day and super popular amongst women. It was like a "have you watched the new episode??? 😃🤭🤭" kind of thing. Most educated women were into the book and knew it.
I do understand why people find Genji Monogatari problematic and disgusting. But as a literature student, this story was written for almost 1000 years ago, the age where people still did not have any concept or knowledge about child-grooming and stuff, and is one of the first novel in the world. Also, this story can successfully reflex the japanese society back then and has so many things and messages to be interpreted. You can hate this work by its plot, but I still convince that it has some kind of a cultural value that I found very interesting.
It can be both culturally important AND completely upsetting! Look at oedipus, or lolita. Both very significant works of literature, both DEEPLY dark and disgusting.

@@dynamopirate470 Well I don't see the problem. Its an ancient story, basta. A lot of old stories and myths are strange or fucked up. Don't forget how Zeus seduced or even raped women. Or how Aphrodite actually came into existence.
@@Criminal_Turtle You can say the same thing about horror movies. If you believe there isn't any truth to these stories you're being naive. If you casually think "hmmm incest and rape is okay because Zeus did it" then Caligula is the book for you.
@@dynamopirate470 As you can read I called these stories fucked up/strange since the actions in these stories/myths are fucked up but also funny to read with others since it gets so bizarre. But you can't compare these old myths with nowadays stories. Time is a diffirent country. So maybe they weren't so fucked up for people in the past. And just because someone likes a book or a movie with violent or worse action in it it doesn't mean he or she like the actions themselves. It is more like how these dangerous/sad/violent situations are implemented into the story/movie in order to have a good plot and flowing story. Sure, some movies like 'Jigsaw' are disgusting in my opinion and wonder how people can enjoy this movie but I am also sensitive to horror/ splatter movies and can't watch them. To add to the pile, the protagonist's father specifically chose his stepmother because she reminded him so much of the protag's mother, and was physically, practically a clone of her. Protag does remember his mother and what she looks like but still loves the heck out of stepmom.
Specifically because of the resemblance to his mom, at first that make it slightly less weird by saying there's only a 5 year age gap between them so really it's just his dad who's a creep but nah Genji just wants to pipe his mom
@@jonnysac77 Genji's biological mother died when he was at a very young age therefore he never received motherly love nor acceptance because he was an illegitimate child of the king. I am Japanese. I'm using a translator. The animation used in this video is“Genji Monogatari”This is an animated version of a story that remains in Japanese history. The person dancing under the cherry blossoms is a man. This story is a love story. Not a Yuri😩😩
If I had not looked up the plot, I'd still have fun thinking this was a really well made Yuri, ignorance is bliss edit: dear god please stop replying to this, i was too dumb two years ago to realise how much of a fetishised and dead word yuri is as of current, i meant no harm, this was also around the time when 'wlw' wasn't mainstream yet. my bad y'all
I saw it because someone said it was based on the first novel of the Heian era..it was beautiful but uh not what I was expecting, I wanted lesbians :'u
Tbh when I first watched the movie I was kinda angry at Genji for getting himself involved in all of these affairs but later on I started to realize that Genji in reality was just someone seeking motherly affection but he mistook that wanting for affection as lust! All in all the movies art was really pretty and the story was pretty tragic!
Yep I'm with you I was angry at Genji at first, bedding women left and right and other problematic stuff in our modern society. But as story goes on, I realized he's a tragic character. His actions are fueled by hidden pain and deep need for motherly affection. His stepmother looked like his dead mother but he mistakes the feelings for lust. Since he couldn't get his step mom, he seeks comfort in other women. I think the cathartic scene where he just dances under the Sakura tree and be self-aware of his issue is the best valuable lesson I can get from the story. Face them mommy issues Genji! But as for the aftermath, does Genji deal with it? Or saw his womanizing as wrong? I haven't read the entire literature yet, but seeing as it's a work from a different time, I bet the only self-reflection is focused on realizing his mommy issues part
Is very meaningful the Genji's monogatari by Murasaki Shikibu, the portrait of the sadness, uncertainty, loliness and dialectic of love and other things of the human condition.
I wished animation was still this charismatic; the simplicity, how delicate every motion is, the softness of fabric, how pliable skin can be, showing slow movements in detail makes it look sensual, lightweight and emotional. especially the gentle forehead touch and emphasis on slow blinks has me in tears 😭
Found some more info ^_^ It was written as a poem by Mie Nakabayashi in the early 60s. She would supposedly sing it while traversing the walking trails in Gunma Prefecture, her hometown. It spread across the country where eventually it was found by folk pop group Akai Tori. Akai Tori did a cover in 1970. Sumiko Yamagata's version was released three years later in 1973. 1000年前の女性が作った物語とは思えないほど登場人物が多い源氏物語、興味あるから読んでみたいけど、あまりに内容がドロドロしてるって噂ばかり聞くから躊躇してしまう…このアニメーションはとても素敵
I’m honestly surprised that most people don’t know about The Tale of Genji. It’s incredibly important when it comes to Japanese literature.
I'm pretty sure it's because of the story.
I only watched this movie because of the animation, the beauty of the culture etc. Everything is just so beautiful, except for the story, which is just...disgusting.
@@konanxhidan3202 must be where GRRM got his inspiration.
Lmao I'm tired of yall, that was a different time, if it happened then it would be weird and disgusting, but it happened literally centuries before us, where it was normal.

It wasn't normal like you said.
Kidnapping a little girl to make her his perfect future wife, his incestuous obsession with his mother (the stephmother he was in love with is looking exactly like his mother).
Even his friend was surprised when he was kidnapping a child.
Also this topic (cheating, sleeping around, kidnapping children) is the *main topic* of this book/movie ! So you shouln't be surprised if people didn't love this story so much..
@@zeera7080
Please send me some different serious sources where it is written that 'incestuous obsession with the parent' and 'kidnapping a little girl to make her the perfect future wife' was *normal* during the heian period.

I’m even surprise some of you get turn off by getting to know the real Plot, genji monogatari is consider a japanese literature classic and by the way lets not forget that some english classics have very disturbing plots too, take for example Edipo or Hamlet so idk what all the fuss is about
If you don't "know what the fuss is about" you're only pretending you don't see the actual issue with literature like that.
But I love reading Psychothrillers, so, does that mean I like and appreciate murderous psychopaths in real life? It's stupid.
@@dynamopirate470 theres nothing wrong with literature like that. keep in mind this book was written centries ago. stuff like that was normal back then.

Tbh when I first watched the movie I was kinda angry at Genji for getting himself involved in all of these affairs but later on I started to realize that Genji in reality was just someone seeking motherly affection but he mistook that wanting for affection as lust! All in all the movies art was really pretty and the story was pretty tragic!
whered you even watch it?
I haven't read the entire literature yet, but seeing as it's a work from a different time, I bet the only self-reflection is focused on realizing his mommy issues part
he's not tragic, he's disgusting

Akai Tori did a cover in 1970. Sumiko Yamagata's version was released three years later in 1973.
