IR missiles are calibrated to aim just ahead of the hottest heat signatures, which, on jets, is the cockpit. But Prop planes heat is ahead of the cockpit in most instances, so the missiles tend to track ahead of that, which is open sky.
Lower heat signatures also play a factor.

There were some A-1Hs, and at least one of them got destroyed by an AIM-7.
At 5:05 one propreller used flares

Could it be that the radar missiles couldn't hit a target because the props were quite close together, thus confusing the radar?
Props usually use less metal and more lighter materials like wood which absorbs radarbetter, not all in this but generally also smaller profile as a prop type engine takes up less space than a jet

Yeah i think the swarm of planes confused the missile. Like 2 planes close together can confuse them, more planes = more confusion

I'm going to be extremely honest: the event was not fun to play but seeing the video made me realize how worth the pain it was
As a prop plane I'd of took the tactic to instead stick as low as possible cause I've noticed the jets mostly boom and zooming from above. They don't turn well so bringing the playing field to the props having more manoeuvrability at lower altitudes, I'd of stuck low and tried to think of a strategy which gave the props the advantage. Only thing you wouldn't win against is those missiles but guns you could win against
Yeah, low flying works quite well against radar, as well as terrain abuse. Pyrenees for example works great for terrain abuse, since you can get behind the enemy team by flanking around to the side

I'd think that making the terrain the enemy of the jets would be more efficient as well. It'd probably be more of a deterrent than the machine guns that the turboprops would have. Probably also easier to pull that stunt off in biplanes as well, due to their lower overall speed.

That was the historical method for prop planes to defend against jets.
Dive low and keep turning. There was a method were the whole flight would form a giant carousel in the sky, with all the planes turning in the same direction around the same center. That way, no jet could get on someone's six without putting an enemy prop plane at his own six.
Fun fact: prop planes carrying rockets can fire their rockets as flares

A weapons specialist said that no version of the sidewinder would have trouble tracking a prop plane, the exhaust throws off more than enough heat.

If the Grim Reapers dogfight competitions taught me in a one on one in a small space a jet will always lose.
A homing missile reacts to heat, so heat traps work against it. The missile is easily aimed at the jet blast of modern fighters, as it is very hot, but the old propeller-driven aircraft did not have a jet blast, but only a warm engine, which is much colder than a jet blast. Therefore, it is much easier for a rocket to target a modern fighter than a World War II aircraft.

That first match was xInfinity AiM-9L’s + xInfinity AiM-7F’s vs x62 props
To explain how Fox 2 aka your sidewinder's missiles work. They require a heat signature. The reason why they track jets better is that the heat source is behind the aircraft. While the heat source on propellers is in the front taking almost all of the cool air which helps cool it down after faster speeds.
If I got anything wrong for those who served or serving in the Air Force correct me on anything.

I think the reason that some of the missiles could not hit was because most of the missiles are designed to be heat seeking (like the sidewinder)
So since the tiny engines of the prop planes produce little to no heat the missiles can’t lock on to

Lol this reminds me of the time I joined a top tier air battle with a prop plane, there was a modern ship I decided to kamikaze in my little German plane, I actually did some damage before I dived into him.

Attack/Defend - Both ways
2xF16 versus 1xBi-Plane (F16 must Attack and cannot hide)
2xBi-Planes versus 1xF16 (bi-planes must Attack and cannot hide)
Defend = cannot leave predefined area, within 18000ft
Bi-plane rotate-pivot straffling on
= belly, top-wing-center, bottom-wing-center, right-wings-tips, left-wings-tips, stand-on-tail, ... propeller
= turning radius (pivot) of 20-meters is big bully
Imagine a 1km by 1km space for bi-plane within a 100km by 100km space for f16. Watch youtube on bi-plane acrobatics-display. Bi-plane is like a stationary air-turret (seemingly not moving, only twisting and rotating), no matter how you fly the f16, bi-plane, with center propeller and therefore 2x20mm, will always be looking-at you.
Understand further = camel-pak and cigar due to air-time all-the-time
Was a little doubtful the f16s could pull it off because of the f14 video but after a couple minutes i thought yeah they could
after 46K+ hours and playing sins 2013 this would be fun sometimes cause i never have any good action then doing the same thing over and over. hit me up of ur doing another one of these this would look like alot of fun
Salut, Monsieur. I would recommend a fight between lotsa props vs the Mirage F1C (C, CT, C-200). Would be interesting to see one of the hardest jets to fly fight against props. This also would be an interesting challenge as the Mirage F1C isn't known for its agility. It's acceleration is not as good as some other aircrafts and even a Phantom can almost outmanoeuvre it. Would be interesting.

Honestly I’m surprised none of the props brought along some unguided rockets to spoof the missiles with, Rocket engines actually will spoof IR missiles making them a good flare alternative 😂

The prop plane could’ve gotten rockets and used it as flares since missles lock onto hot engines and rockets have a little thrust on the back it can lock onto it
Only Ir missiles lock onto heat but in this video they were using semi and active Radar missiles
Man it’s hard to believe it’s been over a year since I went head on with the jet and survived.. I think soon I need to be on another video.

I think if the prop planes stayed really low to the ground they’d have had a better chance as all the F-16 pilots where doing too down attacks!?
Low and if the coordinated like say 10 planes circling clock wise at 1000 feet 10 counter clock at 2000 and so on
Why do they get infinite missiles though. Kinda lame that they never have to fight the prop planes because they don’t run out of missiles

so my theory on the missles not tracking properly is that some of the prop planes have equipped Rockets to create a shot burst of High Heat.
So far I am yet to be killed by missile in my Sea Vixen because whenever i see that Missile indicator I fire a Much brighter AGM for it to track instead.
However sometimes the players just switch to guns but i have deterred players from getting me through Energy management and then just peeling off because I wasn’t their first target and therefore wasted their Final missile.
I think the reason why the missiles couldn't hit any targets could be because the missiles are fired at the point where the prop planes are only 10 few meters away from the f16, as soon as the missile launches with the prop planes being that close the missile will lose it's target

You should do ww2 spaa vs helicopters
I’m surprised none of the props brought rockets to act as makeshift flares. That’s a pretty common tactic in early missile jets.
The F-16 has Aim9L's which is significantly better than the F-14s Aim9H's. The L can pull 30gs and is all aspect vs the H only being able to pull 18g and being rear aspect only. So the L has an easier time getting a lock as the engines and exhaust are in the front of the props and being able to pull an extra 12g helps guide it in.

Prop planes should be able to bring rockets as flares
the lack of heat thery works well with the early biplanes of ww1 using 40hp engins to at best aprox 200 hp, not nearly as mutch as the multi thousand deggree thrusters and jets and rockets the missiles were buiilt to target
I love flying my Kee Bird B-29 but it doesn't hold up against a 20mm
What i noticed is that the large bombers like the tu-4 on round 2 were pretty effective against the f-16s

I have an idea for a video, what if you took a bunch of p-36 peashooters and maybe like 3 or 4 b-17s or any suitable bomber and have the massive amounts of peashooters try to shoot the bombers down.
well there is a reason y the radar missiles don't work against props
i have played custom battles where the radar missile will not kill a prop because they are too slow for the radar to detect, they have a low radar cross section, or dumb gaijin code
i really dont know why they dont lock onto props that well unlike in jets
the average range where I am able to fire a radar guided missile at a prop is around 5k
a little over 3 miles
this could explain why the radar missiles were ineffective
Plus I've seen videos on here where players have fired their rockets to trick a fighter jet missiles

M3 Bradley's are way better than Marder, he should do M3 Bradley's vs BMP's
It’s probably because most jets have afterburners which makes heat for most air battles because they are not ment to go against WW2 planes

And there is 5gen that can go head to head with prop planes in terms of maneuverability at low speeds
Soon we’ll get to the point where props where lose that maneuvering advantage scary to think about
Funny thing is I play top tier with my fren who bought a premium and since I’m at rank 4 I use prop planes and yes we play arcade but I still find it funny that I kill 6 jets almost every time
My problem with the first round is unlimited missiles it's nonsense all it shows is missile shoot plane now if they had been limited to there standard set up missiles till they used them and then guns it might of been interesting. The second suffered from the unlimited ammo problem the least interesting one of these I've seen plus I wouldn't of taken bombers the AI gunners are crap and if your gunning your not flying making you a sitting duck
On custom battles the yak 3(ww2 prop plane)is super good at taking down any jet, the f-4S and the A-4E are easy targets to kill
