  • Director Matt Reeves joins us this week to discuss The Batman. This is part 1 of our special 2-part episode on this film, since there is so much to discuss with Matt and his team. So be sure to check out part 2, where we discuss the cinematography of The Batman with Director Matt Reeves here: • The Cinematography of ... .
In this episode we are joined by Matt and his incredible team of sound and music artists:
    Michael Giacchino - Composer
Will Files - Supervising Sound Editor
Douglas Murray - Supervising Sound Editor
    Andy Nelson - Re-Recording Mixer
Somehow, despite their very busy schedules, we managed to spend over an hour together (in-person!) discussing the amazing work this team did. And as you'll soon discover, this is a group that works incredibly well together, each bringing their exceptional creativity and craft to the process. But we also spend a lot of time discussing how Matt manages to bring everything together so seamlessly as the director:
""You have to become an emotional compass. To me, that is the job of the director. Because you have so many incredibly creative people who you're working with. Here: I make a movie in my head and a piece of paper - that's one version of the movie. And it's a very narrow band of what that movie could be. And then you work with these artists and you want everyone to bring something... And I have to be an emotional compass to say, 'that idea is great! That idea really works!' Somebody has to do that. And the way you do that is by immersing yourself into that thing.""
    - Matt Reeves, Director, Co-Writer, and Producer, ""The Batman""
This episode is a master class in filmmaking and collaboration, with a ton of insights into the process of crafting this latest superhero epic.

I could listen to Matt Reeves talk about film for hours. He's so articulate yet concise, and *passionate* about film-making. The wait for the film was long, and the closer it got the hype would build to a fever pitch. But the end result made it all the more worth it. I loved the film and have now seen it more than once. Reeves and his team have reached the pinnacle with this, and I can't wait for the story to continue. 🦇🦇🦇

Matt Reeves just makes me smile when he talks about Batman. He’s not “reimagining” the character the way many creators do, or disrespecting the lore and fans. The sound design in this movie is amazing. Not just the most obvious parts but even subtle things, like when Bruce goes through the Renewal papers and you can hear the room ambience or the sound of papers. It's really rare in modern movies

    • @jamesmccutcheon5466
      @jamesmccutcheon5466 2 года назад +7

Hearing room ambience and the sound of papers as he goes through them, that’s rare? I agree the sound design is great but foley and ambience is mandatory, there’s not much special about your example.
A scene i can think of that had great sound design would be the bat mobile reveal before the car chase. The ascending shriek of the engine like a boiling kettle makes the more realistic version of the batmobile feel so much more intimidating than Nolan’s imo.

When its broken down like this this movie really is a masterful film. Its not perfect has some flaws but ultimately its undeniable that this is a really unique and fresh take on The Batman, what his origins meant to him and how it shaped him to become The Batman. People who criticise this for not being Batman canon needs to hear what Reeves said. He knows of the Batman canon and Afflecks script was probably close to canon but he wanted to turn that on its head and make his own version of the Batman.

i saw the batman twice in theaters, both times i was blown away by how BIG everything sounded, it really adds something great to the movie that i cant replicate on any pair of headphones. the first time i saw the scene with the batmobile i remember being floored by how cool the engine sounded, i was so entertained getting to hear that thing rev up and barrel around gotham lol

Movie is really amazing . I've seen it over 5 times fully.. Not including the times I've watched it without sound or had it on listening to it while doing other things. It's all I have on my tv.. It's perfection.

the 'dialogue' between the music and cutting process is delightfully apparent in the final cut, particularly some of the batmobile chase to striking affect.

Certain elements of the movie reminded me of, Murder At Wayne Manor. It's a great book, that isn't a comic but a great example of a Batman detective story. Especially with involving his parents with the story and evidence you find throughout the book.

Looking forward to them talking about the sound for the Bat-Car, and also the nightclub, an environment that so many movies struggle to do in a way that sounds realistic.

I didn't have a clue that the sound of this film had been improved when I went to see it. As I was watching it I realized that something was going on with it because the punches, the rain, the strings of the score, the engine of the batmobile and the chase scene. EVERYTHING was sounding amazingly. Now I can see. Awesome job

Reeves seems know way more about the tech of all aspects of filmmaking than a lot of directors.
Not even sure Nolan knows it all, he just tells people do it like any other director.
