Yes there is subtitles for that video. Its 顔の映らない主役』. They didn’t have a english translation for the title of the video. They put english subtitled throughout the video
Both are great suitmation is realistic while CGI allows kaijus and creatures to do stuff they couldn’t do in suitmation easily without actors getting hurt
I would not say suitmation is realistic but more of charming. I appreciate suitmation but saying a dude walking and fghting in a suit on a ser is realistic is a HUUUUGE stretch
both have their own advantages CGI makes godzilla's appearance more beautiful and sharp, with relative smoothness and fluidity Suitmation, although it usually doesn't look as good as CGI, because it's performed by the actors themselves, the actions, movements, and manipulations will be more realistic, allowing viewers to feel it more clearly both are good if the director is a talented person
I definitely like practical effects more and would rather sit through poor practical effects than bad cgi. I do enjoy when they are mixed up and blended together as well though. Seeing more of a blended approach in the monsterverse would be awesome. I'd also love to see a big budgeted film use 100% practical effects and on location filming too. For example a good live action Resident Evil film with the practical effects like the 80s horror film "From Beyond" would be incredible and creepy
I’d say Suitmation is my preferred take on Godzilla but CGI isn’t bad by any means, far, FAR from bad. Fun Fact: There is some unused Stop Motion that would’be been used in Godzilla Vs. Biollante in the final battle but it got cut. This then begs the question: When will we get a Stop Motion Godzilla film? Personally, (as a huge Ray Harryhausen fan) I would love to see Godzilla brought to life via this technique.
There's a Shot in the Original Godzilla where his Tail was moved using Stop Motion. Also, The Scene where one of the Fire Engines Crashes was done with Stop Motion.
Both are great but I like to see practical techniques like Suitmations, I love to see a Stop Motion Godzilla more. That has never been shown or tried this century.
CGI stole my dream job of being a traditional suit actor, not the motion capture crap that they use now. Plus, although it’s more dangerous, suitmation is more realistic because, well, it’s actually in front of the camera. CGI does have it’s ups, like for the Marvel movies and others, where there’s characters who are vaguely based on real humans/animals. But when it comes to monsters that are usually a combination of different animals or things, it just makes it look out of place. Growing up in the early 2000’s, I was never scared of the CGI monsters, but after watching my first Godzilla movie, I was terrified because of how real it looked, even though it was goofy. The craftsmanship of the suits is amazing, but with CGI all you need is a Blender model that can easily be stolen and ported to other websites. Love this video btw! 💛
Now that you mentioned it, there has been a couple of times when suitmation gets enhanced with CGI. One example I can think of is the Attack on Titan movies. Although they’re pretty bad, they did use a lot of practical effects for some of the Titan designs. In the movies, Eren and the others are portrayed by people in rubber suits enhanced by CGI.
okay, tbh many people pefere ''Suitmation' bc of nostalgia. I mainly enjoy both, and like both. bc i am not racist to Suitmation or CGI so I love both also great video.
im in my mid 20s and only got into and became a fan of kaiju films this year. coming over as an almost lifelong horror freak and action fan for just about seven years. practical effects all the way
Use both CGI & practical effects. One of the drawbacks with CGI is that it tends to look outdated very fast. Just compare "Rise of The Planet of The Apes" to "War of The Planet of The Apes" to see what I mean. Or, worse... if the CGI is rushed and looks terrible. (Look at Godzilla 2000s CGI). One of the reasons that the 1993 Jurassic Park movie worked so well is the use of practical effects mixed with CGI.
Honestly the suitmation was good at its time, but in my opinion CGI is better because of how realistic it has became throughout the time when you have great artist and so.
Honestly, I'm up for the old classic adverse for musicals, applied here. When a character can't talk, they sing. I prefer suits till they need to do something impossible, or too expensive to do with suits. Then we go for CGI. It also removes some of the more dangerous stunts. I think Shin Godzilla's use of a actor for stop motion is a pretty good idea but I still think suits are good in supplementation. There's such a lot of times where a suit looks and feels better than a computer generated creature.
I grew up with the CGI Godzilla, which is why I like more of the newer movies that the suitmation, don’t take this as me saying “Suitmation sucks” because I think most of the older movies are all considered Gems, well besides The Son of Godzilla.
Fun fact: the Godzilla in 1998 was both cgi and a man in a costume at the same time. Which is way I do find it better then mv goji’s way of doing it. Just saying. I read a magazine about 1998 being both a man in a suit mixed with cgi. Kinda like the Jurassic Park movies.
If utilized well enough in some scenes or as a whole of a movie, both suitmation and CGI are gold. Same goes for stop motion and special makeup effects (I know stop motion and special makeup effects aren't the main topic, but they should also be included as well). I'd REALLY love to see a Kaiju movie that utilize FANTASTIC Stan Winston like effects, Ray Harryhausen stop motion, The Hobbit level CGI and GMK level (2001) suitmation.
The fact that practical effects do take so much effort and grit is what makes it feel more special to me. But CGI isn’t soulless either, far from it-made in a computer or not, it still takes a human touch. You wanna talk about soulless, have a look at AI.
I do think if tokusatsu is gonna stay relevant and appral to a worldwide mainstream audience, they ought to stick with CGI but still maintain the look of suitmation moving forward. Just continue what they were doing in the shin Godzilla, Shin Ultraman, and Minus One movies. Don't rely too much on practical effects but use it when needed.
GCI is an excellent tool for filmmakers and storytelling as a whole, but I hate how much it has replaced. Beautiful hand drawn 2D animation has gone the way of the dinosaur in the US, replaced by CGI. Stop motion is not dead, but incredibly rare, because of CGI. Stunt work, miniatures, makeup effects and more, are often replaced with CGI. You talk about how both can be used, and it doesn't need to be an either or scenario, but given the current filmmaking landscape, that is not a realistic outcome. Don't get me wrong, I've seen it done well. If anyone has watched Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, then that show does a fantastic job of using both puppetry and CGI to bring its characters and world to life. Projects like that aren't going to be the norm though. If corporate executives think they can get away with placing as much work onto CGI artists as possible in order to save time and money, then that's what they'll do. As an aside, I also find how common place CGI is to be a bit boring? Like, ok I know you put a lot of time and effort and money into this, but virtually every blockbuster today is doing the same. A big reason why I like stuff like suitmation is not because of what it can do, but simply because of what it is. I get to look at the screen, knowing they actually built that thing. It's a novelty.
The outing of suitmation and practical monsters in general is similar to what happened to 2d animation, with all ultimately getting replaced with cgi in big theatrical releases. It's sad since these outed techniques offer experiences only they can produce, and the artistry involved is made much more apparent (not to take away from the skill required to create cgi mind you). Every detail in suitmation feels more personal and interesting because it utilizes actual things that exist. Minature sets especially are far more satisfying to see be built, only to then be destroyed than something digital. We are so oversaturated with cgi that it's rare when it stands on its own. Cgi offers unlimited potential for sure, and in a lot of cases only it can do the job. But practicality is seen by a lot of people as more special because of its limitations. In an ideal world, both mediums coexist in the limelight, with Godzilla movies still made primarily with suitmation alongside movies that rely on cgi. Unfortunately, anything but no longer sells. At least Toho's still keeping it alive in their short Godzilla films though.
I love suitmation so damn much and I’d love to get a new movie using it. But CGI allows you to do so much more. For example the entirety of GvK and GxK, Ghidorah picking up and dropping Godzilla in KOTM wouldn’t have worked in suitmation and so much more. And while obviously the monsterverse was never gonna be suitmation if in another universe it was, it wouldn’t work out. (Forgot to mention, CGI allows you to give them more in depth movements and characteristics)
I personally love both why not mix suitmation in close up shots while cgi can be used wider shots. Jurassic park and starship troopers are great example of this they both hold up so well. Gamera 3 had the best suitmation with higher quality.
I don’t see why we can’t combine the two, use a mixture of practical and CGI like the original Jurassic Park movies did, a the suit can be built with more modern techniques and CGI can be used to enhance the character.
I'm going to have to admit I think I like both of them especially the CGI animation I bet they were trying their ass off to do motion capture against that
I prefer suit. It is the Japanese art form that should be respected as such and never abandoned. That's how they created creatures. It should never be hidden away. As for the CGI, it can do so much more and do full realized versions of these monsters that the suit limitations can't do. So a representation of two in film is a good balance.
CGI when executed well will almost invariably look better than practical/suitmation, but when the CGI is sloppy (see every monsterverse movie after K:SI) it looks way worse and even more removed from reality than even shoddy suitmation.
I think suitmation because the older films have a feel that the new ones don't, sure they were supposed to deliver money which they did but they also had a sense of cozy quality to them. Which is something the newer films do not have *caugh* *caugh* Monsterverse films
The Godzilla movies effects are at their best when using suits and not CGI. While yes Minus One or Shin both had beautiful effects they lacked the charm that the suits provided. @@KimFromTheCrypt You say that like CGI doesn’t have hours of work and crews of people in it. I’m not against suitmation but CGI does it better.
