The Six Most Memorable Swells of 2023

- We always remember the good days. But what makes a whole year of surf memorable? For this special Surfline video presentation, the whole team dug into 2023’s amazing array of swells across all the world’s coasts, and found six that somehow seemed to define a sometimes wild and sometimes very cool year. Check out January’s exploding low pressure system off California! Find out how and why the incredible Eddie Swell exceeded so many expectations at Waimea. Watch the effects of a tropical cyclone that caused one nation to pump, and another to drown. Shift with the seasons to the biggest Teahupo’o of the year, then to Hurricane Franklin, the well-traveled storm that sent surf from Florida to France. Then to the Southern Ocean bomb that closed out Jeffreys Bay and made what may have been the biggest single swell of 2023: 31 feet at 19 seconds!

What an epic year!
The January swell in California was pretty crazy. I have a video of the Hammerland Jetty near El Porto on my page for anyone who wants to see what a beach break looked like during that swell. Two guys were out there charging.
As classic as Waimea gets for the Eddie. One for the ages for riders and watchers. Supersized.
Was the best May in Oaxaca I've seen since 1994 going down there.
Wonder if the Jersey swell in December 23 would have made the cut if this piece came out a month from now.

Where’s Harry Martin’s name credit on the Greenmount bomb barrel he got. at the end, best barrel of all the Greeny ones on the video the others where pedestrian also nothing on the surfer credits at the end only the pros got a mention and this was the best wave in that sequence
NJ Juice deserves an honorable mention for the raw beefy bombs that landed on 12/18/23! 20ft at 15s.
I still use noaa weather radio.

Who cares?
I came to watch waves. Not to watch guys sit around a computer. I've got a computer right here, I don't need to see yours. Here's a tip: if I can see the journalist in the journalism, you're doing it wrong. I went back to Surfers from Bali channel where they show, you know, surfing.
My bad, I guess, but I kept waiting for more surf. I didn’t time it but I would GUESS that BARELY 1/3 of the time here is actual surfing. Maybe even close to a 1/4. If you want surfing, go watch something else.
More waves less Surfline babble please.
