- The biggest swell in my lifetime arrives on the South African shores and turns our world upside down. Watch as I film this arriving storm and building seas as JBay goes massive and our coastline gets destroyed..

I surfed J Bay back in 1969. My wife and I hitchhiker around S.A. and we camped there in a tiny 2 man tent. There was NOTHING there in town except a single shop.
It blew like shit for a week, no swell, then it came up. I had a 6 ft Van Straalen, single fin. I'd had to glass it back in as I had sent it from Cape Town on the train and they had snapped it off. I had one day when it was big but I was the only guy out. A learning experience. We hitched out and got picked up by a surfer in a VW kombi. He took us up to P.E. and a little river break. We came home via Mauritius where the French locals showed me how to glass a lump on the back of the board, drill a hole through it, thread 10 ft. of nylon clothesline through the hole and tie the other end to a handkerchief which was knotted on my ankle. First time surfing on coral reef.
Good times back then remember those days. Kids today would not understand 😁

In the seventies we used the rubber tubing they ran across roads to count cars, next gen 😂
We surfed the place in 1968 when there was nothing there but a dusty caravan camp and had a 20 foot day but without the terrible wind in this video. It was the best wave I’ve ever ridden anywhere on earth. Sean Tompson and his brother Michael were there for practice before he became world famous and he was shredding these giant gnarly barrels right in front of the rocks and making it look effortless. He never wiped out not even once which is a good thing because that far up the break a wipeout would blast you right into the rocks.

I stayed in j bay ,July to October 1975 at the ronnies,the Hawaiians had come and gone from memory and we drove around to Supers one morning (me and a couple of other Aussie blokes)and walked up to the edge of the dune to see a set come through,dead straight swell,brisk offshore,sun out but cold and if that set wasn't 12 to 15 I'll stand stuffed.There was an American guy there named Robbie and he'd bought an 8 ft 6 gun and everyone stirred him about having such a big board but mark my words,he caught a set wave and his board looked like a twin fin .Im 70 now and I dont know who's left of the crew who were there,Piers,Bruce,Larry Levin,Peter Daniels,but somebody may remember it.
Great memories.. Yeah the guys who had proper big boards did well, the rest not so good..

@@oceanadventures365 I think Larry and Daniels were shaping boards around 7 ft,not many guys surfed short boards,all rounded pin or swallow tail.But then there was Bunker who took out a 5 ft 6 twin fin in board shorts in winter but he was different.
Yip I surfed Supers first time in 1973 as a twelve year old.. Had a 6.2 single fin I bought from and Auzzie at St Francis Bay. Had a logo of a train coming out of a barrel cant remember the name of Auzzie.. Pretty mod board for those days..

Great video work. Thanks for it. And the commentary, too. Old heads get it. Every time I see J-Bay I remember the RI Water Brothers, and the travels of one of those Brothers at J Bay. I was lucky, I tell you, to be in the water with him at Ruggles on a double-overhead day way back when. I had as much fun watching him crushing the swell at Ruggles as I did riding it myself. Aloha to the RI crew from an old outsider in the lineup. And hey, go J-Bay! You'll be firing long after we all have flickered out.

Surfed jbay and bruces at the tail end of this summer last year on a small swell and was amazed by the beauty of the waves and the spot... i think i would freak out if i surfed waves this good.
Jordy is driving some beautiful lines out there, reminds me of waves I had at another point in Baja.

Cant believe that the WSL has dumped J Bay from the tour one of the best and most consistent wave in the world, they need to see this so they know what they could be missing.
Been an amazing winter with swells every spring tide and more. WSL scheduled the comp on the neaps... Would have been all time 2weeks either side of their dates.. My videos prove that... Idiots!!
@@oceanadventures365they do it on purpose to favor small wave aerial surfing, unfortunately this kind of surfing is frowned upon by the wsl now

I was out at j Bay when it was that big ...and I got hammered. But I walked down the beach a little ways and surfed albatross and had the most amazing surf session of my life.

Hi Cap. Trevor. I had been monitoring the forecasts, days before and realizing the degree of the thing, I started to imagine the points that would wake up to life, such as north of Cape (Paternoster) and Cape St. Francis, as soon as the amperage drops enough. However, I confess that I had not evaluated the compound factors that would aggravate this large swell, as well as the Indian current against the swell and spring tide. Disaster!! Gordom Bay appears to have suffered the most from the tzu effect, and has become a cursed pocket. Greetings from Florianopolis, Brz.

Rad! I got to see Jordy at rincon CA a few years ago. Ripper! We like our spot but I have to admit Jbay seems a little better.
I learned to surf at the Rincon back in the mid part of the 60's. I even surfed with the Beach Boys about the time they released their first hit song. I was a bit younger than them, but they gave me a lot of great tips - they were truly nice guys! My first time out, the waves were perfect for a beginner, but as the day wore on, the waves got bigger and I became a little scared & tired. I headed in and watched the guys surf. I learned a lot that day & have had the surfing bug ever since. Now that I'm pushing 70, I stick to belly boarding - it's STILL a thrill. Loved your video, and those were beautiful waves. ❤

When Supers is firing its an incredible wave.. Just paddling back up the point with big walls coming down the point is insane let alone the speed you get down the line.. Hope you make it..
