Remote, Shallow and Barreling? Watch Maps to Nowhere Episode 3: "Timing is Everything"

- Patience is a virtue. Maybe you've heard that one before, but when it comes to getting the waves of your life, it's not just a cliché. Diehard surf traveler/journalist Matt Rode has spent years exploring and mapping the remote corners of the surfing world. This time, he invited fellow surfers Soli Bailey, Anne Dos Santos and Ian Crane to explore a beautiful, menacing right reef slab, with a lot more going on than it first appears. Seventy-two hours and four flights later, they'd beaten the swell into town...and the wait began. Until the last two days of the trip, when their patience paid off in the biggest and most glorious Maps challenge so far.
*Note: “Maps to Nowhere” is a series about how far surfers will go to ride perfect, empty waves. The spots you'll see in the series are not new discoveries, but they are perfect, empty, and remain undisclosed, because our belief is that the journey is at least half the fun - and sometimes, over half the travel time. We thank the many local community members who've helped make our adventures a success.
***NEXT! Ep 4, “Where The Road Ends,” with Jordy Smith and Soli Bailey, premieres May 17th.

Please make this an ongoing series 🙏🏼
Maps To Nowhere is ongoing! We have one more episode this season!
@@Surfline so there’ll be a season 2!?
@@Surfline i volunteer as tribute!!!
Totally agree please
I’ve seen a lot of surf series, this one is easily my favorite.
Thank you! It means a lot. The team worked really hard to pull this off.
Soli was clearly the standout surfer of the trip and had the frontside advantage, but I'm super impressed how well Anne surfed. She absolutely charged it!
oh my gosh! what a score! also... that Yellow Fin Tuna 👀 Soli getting it done
Missed you in this episode 😉🤙🏼
Epic trip! Thanks for having me:)
You're the best! Thank you for getting the wave of your life!
You were charging!
Vai garota! 😎💪🏽
Oh man Anne is absolutely incredible, charging so hard. That 1 barrel she was too deep on was nuts. Love seeing the emotion of someone so young pushing their limits like that, epic.
best surf series I have seen in along time, and I've seen a lot. Remarkable work.
Cheers!
This is the best thing I’ve seen yet on any RUclips channel. Give the Film crew, editors and of course athletes a freaking standing ovation. I hope Surfline knows they have a special thing going on here.
It was so amazing to see Anne, getting more comfortable with the wave. Looks so tricky to surf backside on that. The feeling she gets in the end is what makes me surfing today. Got me emotional here. Congratulations to her on conquering the wave and you guys for the amazing crew that you put together!
Definitely my new favorite series on Yewtube. Hoping for more like this!
The subtle "hints" in this series to where these spots could be are fantastic and makes me think they were purposely put in to chuck you a bone and send you into a google earth rabbit hole. I'd love to think they are put in to throw you off the scent completely and they have no relevance to the location of these waves atall, small details like that show a real passion for the craft! The split second shots of plane tickets, very specific travel times, or a half a restaurant name clearly just there to get you thinking, most likely in vain. love it!
Yep, they flipped the maps upside down too in order to throw people off the scent. But they didn’t cover all their tracks. I think I know where it is 😎
Somewhere around Tahiti and Fiji, I think... Pacific.
Tahiti. Thousands of a waves like that
The cinema photography is amazing, i just happened to see one of your shorts and here i am. Brilliant 👌👏👏👏
What an amazing adventure!!!!! Epic Slab Of The Year Entry for sure.
Masterclass on barrel riding from Soli Bailey, and ADS is a star
I was super impressed with the little lady, trying to send it on this slab! I've been on trips to explore in Indo, and it's no joke. This crew was ripping. No hospital where they were! Super thick slab.
Right on Matt. Keep em coming please 🙏
Just so Insanely Inspiring to watch you all out there keep the maps series going please ❤🏴
Matt is a legend! So sick!!
Siiick!! Best series on RUclips

Unreal guys. Annie Dos Santos you mad dog legend!! Epic!!!
EPIC barely starts to descibe this episode! 10/10 to all involved!
Can’t believe Surfline is putting Massachusetts on the map!
Cape Cod looking like the Marshall Islands, yo!!
Crazy there are waves like this out there while I’m getting 2-3ft slop before work!
One of those surf trips you’ll never forget.
Beyond spectacular!
This series is way better than poor to fair it’s epic
This videos are soooo good!🤙
Wow. This is the best thing on the Interweb right now!
Great vid's, keep them coming please!
We've got three weeks till Episode 4!
super sick and refreshing
So good! You can probably deduce the country by the food at the potluck but I have no idea where besides that.
Amazing content !!!!
Yeah Soli, great human!
Is it just me or the second surf, when they turn up and show the sets coming through, and then when it shows them surfing, it looks like 2 completely separate days. Like the waves they were watching from the boat were way thicker and heavier, then when theyre surfing it's like fun with a few bigger waves but none of them had the thickness it showed from the boat. Maybe they waited for a while because it was too heavy to paddle?
Think you just answered your own question
Anne surfed so well!
Way to go O'neil for making these Vids! Might need to go buy some Gear! Cheers
Made my day again. Cheers you psychos! One day I will be filming with yall mark my words.
Missing Brett Barley 😢
He had a great time on both trips he did!
amazing not one wipeout.... You guys are so good
if you pause frame I see a boarding pass from Melbourne to Manilla. Gotta be one of those islands maybe.
Wow!!!🙌🤙🔥
Soli Bailey is a charger, every big one he was going
Whoop whoop 🙌🏼 🎉
Amazing
Surf and and catchinf fresh fish is the best
Jesus...Soli should have paid for this one....what a clinic
soo good
Anyone know the song when they are scoring during that hectic session. Such a sick song. Tried to Shazam it but wouldn’t come up.
Anyone know what model Raynor surfboard that is? Looks radical.
My wife told me that she is dying to surf because of this episode. Incredible
We're going now!
Beautiful purpose
Where can I find the tune @5:21?
Epic wave in Philippines... Gotta be near Catanduanes somewhere on the east coast which gets the most solid swell there
PR222 Brisbane to Manila.....
water photog has got to get deeper in the barrel ..imo 😎🤙🏼 easy to say from here though 😝
Unreal.
Must be really remote if they have a pizza restaurant and street lights haha
Pizza is a necessity.
Awesome episode, but I miss Brett Barley… Love the series
What’s the tune at 15 minutes?? Plz 🙏🏽
Score. Invite me next time!
❤❤❤
Anne is a charger! How's that wave at 22:14
Please take me here 🙏
What a barrel
Song at 7:20 ?
Bro you gotta freeze the tuna, you Just got Worms 98%
SOLI!
The swell he's looking at on the map is hitting Greenland.
Enough to make you cry. Name the wave, The eye of God.
looks like tahiti
🆒
invite me next hahahah
A major surf media outlet making content that doesn't give away the location of their footage? More please.
This might be in the Philippines based on the food they were having at 18:27. Not sure where exactly tho
Exactly what I thought
4:52
What’s the location?!
Nowhere. :)
Looks alot like a wave that the Smith Bros Surfed a year or two ago but I'm probably totally wrong lol 🌊💥🤙🏽
There is a very curious sloth at 7:41, unless I am mistaken. It’s my understanding that they are only found in Central and South America, not too far from the equator. There is something that just doesn’t add up about this episode, though, as if they are filming in multiple locations. Wherever this is, it looks like paradise.
There's a solid clue in this video that narrows it down to one region. You'll have to watch again!
Between Costa Rica and Colombia.....😏
In a year there will be surf camps popping up and ruin it. If I ever found a place like this I wouldn't tell a soul.
And he has done it with no shoes. Let's start a go fund me page for Matt so he can buy shoes..
Im guessing Galapagos
Not even close
This is my guess too. Somewhere with two toed sloths. And those are really only in central/South America. It’s definitely tropical and likely an island since it took so long to get to from LA.
galapagos = cold water.
What's the point of hiding the location? Do you really think thousands will just go and destroy the beach that is located "4 days of travel"? I like the show but don't agree with all the secrecy, let others enjoy and don't try to be the "local gringo" at a beach tens of thousands miles away from home. Let others enjoy it too.
Look at chopes now it’s a circus out there now I wouldn’t tell a soul about this either there’s a clear point hiding the location
