- What are the odds of lightning striking twice? Diehard surf traveler/journalist Matt Rode came to this place three years ago, hunting the rumor of a perfect pointbreak. When he finally arrived, the wave simply wasn’t breaking. But on that same trip, Matt stumbled across a remote beachbreak setup that, for its size, was one of the best he’d ever seen.
Matt usually has reservations about revisiting a spot he’s already scored, maybe at its best. This time, he broke his own rule and invited a crew of pro surfers along for the ride - Brett Barley, Eli Beukes, Cory Lopez and Torrey Meister. While it wasn’t easy to convince them all to travel halfway across the world to surf a beachbreak, once they did arrive, they discovered something that blew them away. Day after day after day.
Swell charts, bathymetry models, and buoy data proves helpful to Matt and his crew. But other clues - like the sound of cowbells - really even out the score.
*Note: This is a series about the lengths surfers will go to surf perfect, empty waves. The waves you are about to see are not new discoveries -- but they are (nearly) perfect, and they are empty. The locations are not disclosed because our belief is that the journey is at least half the fun -- and sometimes, over half of the travel time. We thank the many local community members that helped make our adventures a success.

You guys have done very well hiding the location...no license plates or boat names, no local faces etc....but keeping beer bottles off the table and blurring the water bottles during the dinner shot? Respect.

I love seeing how everyone lives together and appreciates the surf trip even though it was more than three days of travel! And Brett is right, as a surfer, you forget the great trip he had when he is enjoying the perfect waves!

This session reminds me SO much of the smaller classic days at Petacalco in the mid-1970’s. It had that beautifully clear blue water and would hold the same shape and quality as it got bigger, but also becoming much thicker and more powerful with size. This really made me feel nostalgic, THANK YOU!

Damn, those waves look so good. Here in So Cal we've had 2 months of no waves, no real waves anyway. I don't think I've ever gone this long without surfing. So I booked a 10 day trip to Nicaragua. in July. CAN'T WAIT!

Please answer 🙏🙏 !!! How do y'all handle those wipeouts? I took a wipeout on a small Puerto Escondido wave yesterday and my whole side of my body locked up... Luckily a massage loosed it but was in pain for 2 days... 🙏🙏

Currently in Morocco having one full on journey, blown tyres, scratched rental (brand new daccia duster), flu, dinged board, injuried knee haha. Been here 10 days and surfed 2 good days at anchors but had to return to casablanca (flight home depending on if i would get charged for scratches) with the rental. On the way back an email with this video gets sent. Cut a long story short due to my respect shown toward the Islamic faith (and possibly the $500 au I've given to the poor) thankyou allah/god, the guys (gangsters lol) end up helping me right out and turns out I'll be seeking out some beaches over the remaining 7 days yew. This Australian just gotta figure out what direction to take. 🙏
