    Thanks Roy! To your awesome vid just replaced mine on a 2014 Sienna, same stupid rusty too hinge broke, door wouldn't open, PITA!! CBA wanted $500+ to put a new unpainted one on! Found a paint match door + spring & gas cap on ebay $60! 😉, Toyota rivets $18, Akktol 1/4" rivet gun on Azon $25. NOTE: Exercise patience drilling out rivets, I drilled out the inner mandrel hole & punched it thru first, then stepped up the bit size until I could just grab the caps with pliers, squeeze & pull out. You do NOT want to make those holes bigger than 1/4" or the new rivets won't hold. Easy job tho, saved a bundle thanks to Roy! 👍🏽

    Thanks Roy. Perfect video. Best I've seen yet. I may try this on my 2014 Sienna. Top hinge just broke yesterday. 105400 miles and she still drives like a dream. I can't believe that Toyota is still making they're fuel doors this cheap though.

      I have a 2014 as well. It's really agitating to see Toyota make such a rookie move. The rivets are fine, it's the stupid side door safety that's springs so hard that it pushes the rivets to it's limits and breaking them.

    • @cranbers
      @cranbers 2 года назад +1

      Obviously after 8 to 10 years the hinge just breaks, it really is a bad design. That button that allows the door to open is very hard on the spring mechanism which is why the top one breaks.

    • @DavidRodriguez-zg5db
      @DavidRodriguez-zg5db Год назад +1

      At the very least just make the brackets two 10mm bolts, the tundras use bolts to hold the hinge. No one wants to drill

    So there is no way to do this without removing the rivets? (you can't take out and install the pin because of the angle I guess?) You didn't show putting the pin back in when it was off, is that difficult or does it slide right in ?

    • @jasm.5823
      @jasm.5823 Год назад

      The pin was part of the old door. The new black door is a complete unit.

    • @cranbers
      @cranbers Год назад

      @@jasm.5823 Yeah I ended up buying one and surprised it all came as one piece just drill out old gas door rivets remove it from the vehicle, put new one on two rivets and done, pretty awesome, granted getting a color match on the matte black to vehicle black was tough on a 9 year old van haha. It works but you can tell its not quite right. You can't seem to buy them by color just generic black and paint to match.

    The reason the hinge broke on my 2014 Sienna is that black button at the top (near the top hinge) is too hard to push in and puts too much strain on the top hinge. Is there any way you know of to make that button easier to push in?

    • @RoysGarage808
      @RoysGarage808  2 года назад +4

      What I’ve noticed is that it’s actually the pin getting rusted so it breaks, what I do with my vans is that I lubricate the pin right from the get so. Thanks for watching 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽

      @@RoysGarage808 Good idea, when I replace mine i'll do that!

    • @cranbers
      @cranbers 2 года назад

      Funnest part about this issue is that when the gas cap is too far out, the sliding passenger door won't open. very confusing! haha. I guess its some sort of fail safe to ensure the gas cap is closed (because if the door opened you would have a heck of a problem where you couldn't shut the door because the gas door is acting like a door stop.

      This just happened on my 2014 Sienna, 🤬, was wondering if that black safety button can be cut/sanded/ground down about 1/16th" or so to reduce the strain on the hinge? May be able to save existing door with some JB weld epoxy..?? Any thoughts? Thx

      I just found out that the fuel door is included in Toyota's extended 10 year warranty on the power sliding door assembly. I took it to the dealer, they ordered in a new fuel door, painted it, and called me when it was ready to install. It's like new now, at no charge, God bless you Toyota!

  • @doro626

    The top rivet head popped off on my 2004 toyota camty fuel door. I asked the dealer about just getting the rivet put back in and they told me I need to replace the entire door assembly, get it painted to match, yadda, yadda. Am I crazy or can I just buy a rivet and refasten it like you did here? I have been using the door with just the bottom rivet holding the door in place with the lock, when driving.

  • @intosilence1773
    @intosilence1773 3 месяца назад

    If you're installing rivets for the first time, learn from my mistake. Before you start pressing the pliers together, you might want to tape up or somehow cover the area around the fuel door. Because the moment the pliers break off the tip of the rivet, it kicks off with force and you could hit the car and chip the paint. Which is what happened to me 😢
    You've been warned.
