Hard to find anyone on RUclips with knowledge on porting 7.3 Powerstroke Diesel heads that involve Boost, Might have to download some of the videos I recorded of the work I’ve done. I record my own music too, I can really appreciate the influence of this video and your channel, Way to go brother
Great explanation of what I've been telling people for years..... Too much cam and not enough head loses everywhere, too little cam and too much head is a better balance with room to grow. Always focus on increasing average torque instead of chasing peak hp.
I've noticed a over kill head for a given displacement will gently fall off up top vs a less than ideal head will just hit a wall and fall of sharply up top. Even with a larger camshaft.
You are a true artist, from your music to the quality of your engine work. Truly priceless. where did you learn your machining and music style. Just shows the talent hidden in every day life. Thank you.
Getting to watch a guy who actually knows what he's doing do what he does...priceless...hurry up, we wanna see the look on the owners face when he sees the dyno results...
Very interesting and informative. I’m glad to finally be able to watch someone do this type of work and explain what they are doing and what is going to be affected by it, and how much effect it’s going to have. Can’t wait for the next video.
I love it! Great explanation on port development! When I started out porting I spent very little time on conventional cylinder heads. They stuck a grinder in my hands and said to do this and not that and walked off. Had some success with those ports and that was about two or three sets, then it was all Big Chief and Big Duke from there on out. I had very good luck finding my way around those ports. Mostly figured out that the majority of them had subpar valve seats and back cut angles. After about 10 years of that I grew worry of it. Always something bigger and always something better. Most of all if you can’t dedicate the R&D time to it at that level you’re pissing into the wind. Talking cross sectional area with me at that time was a one sided conversation. You could go on and on all day long about it, I would just shake my head and keep quiet about it. It did not affect my world then. I must add that I would have made a mess out of those valve seats without a chamber valve on those seats. Looks nice! I’m betting there’s more than just plus 30 cfm improvement there. That’s an easy 50 cfm in Texas. LOL!
Man I have been waiting for this for so long I had to resort to polishing my own turds but before I do that I got to mine a gold mine first before I start polishing my turds since the biggest turd of the nation has made everything so damn expensive to do anything and more so glad your back with a new episode.
Thanks for sharing the science behind the madness. Can’t wait to see the HP gains. Love the polishing turd episodes. And then I’ll wait for the upgraded turd episodes 👍🏻
Old school HED and CanAm builder dudeman sidebyside here…. Denton rest in powerrrrrrrr. Thanks again for doing this Pete! FuckkaKardashian episode… -were polishin’ turdsssss!!!! 😜
You chevy guys got it easy... I'm trying to move 505ci of air through an equally crappy set of Big Block Mopar heads. 210cc runners ootb.. = very small CSA. About 2.19 by my measurements in the pinch. I carved em out to about 2.35.. peak hp is gonna be in 5,500 rpm range.. oh well.. just keep making my turd shiny as possible.
@@realgoodatdoinstuff900 yeah, I've resigned to the fact that if I ever wanna make serious power with this combo it will necessitate a set of aftermarket big boy heads. Either Indy EZ's.. or Trickflow 270's. Either way = BIG $.. 😣
I been watching your polishing turds and I've followed what your saying and thought I'd try do my own heads LS 823's mines 427 LS and big turbo so I've concentrated on exhaust port so far its not to bad.... interesting stuff Ill either fix it or fuck it

In some cases yes but on a small block chevy this doesn't work. We could use offset lifters, offset shaft rockers and then weld up the port at the pinch. This would provide large gains.
@@realgoodatdoinstuff900 interesting, thanks. Would love to get an explanation in a video of the difference or if you do another comment questions video.
I have had many debates with "cyl head gurus" regarding needing an appropriate cross section for a given displacement/RPM range...I should send them a link to this 🤣
I really enjoyed this episode I have sbc 409 with Afr 210 heads that only revs to 6300 with a camshaft and springs setup for 8000 rpms. I would love to know that math you use in the pushrod pinch area
It's (bore squared x stroke x rpm) dived by 190,000 for your engine I got 2.156 for 6,300 rpm The minimum cross sectional area for an AFR 210 head is 2.100 or 2.115
Speaking of polished turds, looks like They're copies of the same casting as the Patriots I have, they look like Pro-comp heads to me. i got 7500rpm out of mine with my solid roller cam, 8500rpm with the flat tappet Cam, standard 30/45/60 valve seat. Smoke the tires from a Roll On 2nd gear, th-400 and 9".. the last combo I built with the 379ci short block and better Dart copy heads, is 10 a second 1/4 capable combo,. My RUclips
I have tried to grind heads for years and I can`t even get out of the gate, How do you control the bur from jumpin and hoppin and chattering and scooting all over the place. I`ve varied the speed, the pressure, the bur size and shape and am equally dangerous with the entire operation.
I know this sounds crazy but I wonder if anybody out there has ever tried sandblasting the inside of the combustion runners to try to flow a little better air that way I wonder if it would even work
ProTopLine had a set of bead blasted heads that were to cheat the "unported" rules for some circle track sanctioning bodies. The bead blasted surface is more akin to a cast surface than a burr or flap finish. Extrude hone is another thing. Sandblasting is an idea but it almost doesnt remove material. The pushrod pinch he took out 1/8" material, a sandblaster would take a really long time to do that. Even just attacking with flap wheels would probably be faster and way more cost effective.

Do you ever tube the pushrod holes? so when porting you can break through the pushrod wall and straighten out the runner in the port?

You are one hell of a singer. Cool, funny song for an intro. Subscribe, subscribe, and subscribe! The end.
do you use a intake and exhaust gasket for reference ? or is there another method ...
Sometimes I will but not in this case. The problems are more interior.
So the cross sectional area is more important on determining rpm then actual cfm, good to know.
What do you listen to while your working?
I have had many debates with "cyl head gurus" regarding needing an appropriate cross section for a given displacement/RPM range...I should send them a link to this 🤣
Awesome
Question ? What is that make and model of that mini die grinder ? Looks easy to manoeuvre
Foredom. I’ve used these for twenty years.
What is your thoughts on dumping?
Can you give the formula for calculating the peak rpm with displacement and csa
Love them "ButtNugget" heads... 🤣
At what point did you flow test before and after? Simple math says you shouldn't have more than 2 sq.in at the pushrod pinch for good air speed.

Are those cheap heads even worth getting to port? Like you said about busting through. Or is it worth it getting something better from start?
Well then we wouldn't be polishing turds......
Lets go!
How many hours do you typically have in a set of heads doing it by hand Pete?
Depends but I bet 40 plus on some stuff.

Any dyno tuning videos? That’d be cool to see and tips and tricks while doing it
Is there a full version of the intro song?
What are you using for your die grinder? Cable driven?
Yes. Foredom

I use my left hand to steady my right. More or less
For all the turd polishing going on, a down draft table would be nice
songs awesome
im watching this for a second time and noticed valve shrouding, did you address this or leave it alone?
Nice vid 👍
Looks like a handy grinder. What is it?
Foredom. Has a foot pedal.
The intro did it
I get paid good money being a professional turd polisher. Haha

Buttnugget??
Guessing another name for turd.
You camera tools bro
a simple torch too light up the port would have made this dam good tv!
improving overhead light is also good
Pete What's the trick to Not hitting the Valve seat . You have a steady hand .
Years and years of practice really. I steady the tool with one hand and guide with the other I guess. Head porters are all different though…
Hey would you mind going more in depth on how much cross section you need for a given engine? I thought that was really interesting. Thank you.
The formula for min CSA is...
min CSA = (Bore x bore x stroke x rpm x .00353) / 613.8
