The way she changes her tone for each character is genius!!!!
Oui, quel talent !
Reposez en paix, chère Jessye Norman ...
It is genius, but it's not really her idea to do it. It was composed this way by Schubert.
@@tttITA10 I know that, I'm just saying, hers is more apparent to me than most others who I've seen sing this song so I was applauding her on that with the knowledge of how it was written.
@@bassmanxan3544 I see. Cool! Her interpretation is indeed super nice.
@@bassmanxan3544 and her facial expression too! i can see genuine fear in the child's part. spot on (chef kiss
Her Elf King voice was by far the most Elf King voice I've ever heard. I think a lot of people have trouble making it so ethereal, especially in comparison with the father voice.
Perfect enunciation, quite impressive for a non-German singer.
Remember that Schubert died at the age of 31. What a masterpiece.
Grandiosa. Mama suprema!
Dois gênios e uma brilhante interpretação.
Damn. I thought Dieskau's was my favourite version. I don' t know anymore! Thanks for sharing
No one understands this song better than Ms. Norman. "Erlkönig" should be scary! Norman is living this song, not just interpreting it. I agree with "Bass Man Xan" -- Ms. Norman changes her tone so that you know whether it is the father or the child. Brava!
Lindo demais! Um obra de arte, sem dúvidas.
A interpretação dela é ótima.
It's absolutely THE BEST interpretation!!!!!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Inclusive inscrita estou.
Simply overwhelming. Eternal praise to the Black Tiger.
Que maravilhosa!!!💖
Um verdadeiro presente, com legendas. Obrigado.
Bravo!!! É de crispar a gente. Uma beleza e intensidade que fazem emudecer... Obrigado, Zach.
Goddamn, that range and the pronunciation for a non-german. Incredible
Danke so sehr, Zack. Einfach Augezeichnet!
Meravigliosa come sempre! Wonderful as always and forever!
Not a Norman fan, I am v. impressed.
Great characterization!
Sensacional.
Insuperável....
The lyrics by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe:
Mein Sohn, was birgst du so bang dein Gesicht?
Was Erlenkönig mir leise verspricht?
Sei ruhig, bleibe ruhig, mein Kind
Egy férfi jő, s hozza gyermekét;
a hűvös széltől úgy óvja őt, s
oly búsan nézi a szenvedőt.
- Jó gyermek, jöjj, a váram szép,
ott vígan játszom veled, míg élsz;
benn színes, tarka a hímes rét,
s anyám néked adja színes köntösét. -
- Jöjj, drága gyermek az erdőn át,
ahol tündér lányaim várnak rád;
vidám dallal hívnak e szépséges nők
és táncolva álomba ringatnak ők.
- Úgy félek, jaj, félek, most hallottad jól,
az éjben tündérek hangja szól!
- E hang, mely zsong, hisz jól hallom én,
szél suttog a fákon, s játszik a fény.
két karja átfog, úgy bánt a rém! -
Hogy űzi, hajtja, a ló szinte száll,
mert sír és jajgat a kis lázas száj;
s hogy végre otthonába ér,
karjában gyermeke már nem él.
In English from Richard Wigmore:
Who rides so late through the night and wind?
It is the father with his child.
He has the boy in his arms;
he holds him safely, he keeps him warm.
‘My son, why do you hide your face in fear?’
‘Father, can you not see the Erlking?
The Erlking with his crown and tail?’
‘My son, it is a streak of mist.’
‘Sweet child, come with me.
I’ll play wonderful games with you.
Many a pretty flower grows on the shore;
my mother has many a golden robe.’
‘Father, father, do you not hear
what the Erlking softly promises me?’
‘Calm, be calm, my child:
the wind is rustling in the withered leaves.’
‘Won’t you come with me, my fine lad?
My daughters shall wait upon you;
my daughters lead the nightly dance,
and will rock you, and dance, and sing you to sleep.’
‘Father, father, can you not see
Erlking’s daughters there in the darkness?’
‘My son, my son, I can see clearly:
it is the old grey willows gleaming.’
‘I love you, your fair form allures me,
and if you don’t come willingly, I’ll use force.’
‘Father, father, now he’s seizing me!
The Erlking has hurt me!’
The father shudders, he rides swiftly,
he holds the moaning child in his arms;
with one last effort he reaches home;
the child lay dead in his arms.
Maravilha!
Rest in peace, Ms. Norman.
Beautiful!
Wunderbar!!
BRAVISSIMA!!
Perfeito!!!
Omg her eyes
I cried listen to this
It's powerful stuff, isn't it? Especially when it's so well performed.

Por nada..foi um prazer...divirta-se
Uau!
RIP
UAUUUUUUUUUU!
Impresionante Jessye Norman.... BUT it is a total lack of Respect towards the Music itself doesn't make any mention of the pianist...
This could be the reason why many great pianists refuse to make Music with singers. Their lack of musical knowledge and training, as well as understanding and respect for music and collegues is Legendary...
I couldn't agree more! Very few pianists can even play this song at a convincingly quick tempo, and it is astonishing to me that the miracles they have to perform in such music are just taken for granted. Let's see what even the greatest of singers sound like without a top accompanist to make music with them... To be fair, I have noticed that singers are generally very good to their pianists these days. They're beginning to realize how much they need them...
oh〜
👍
This video can beat racism all by itself.
Con razón Vangelis la eligió. Para Mythodea.
She gets too scary, too soon.
Impressive, but for me no-one will ever surpass Dieter Fischer-Dieskau for this song.
Not live.
No. Absolutely not.
