Biden Picks Budget Fight with GOP | A Bad Time to Work at Fox | Child Labor Laws Under Attack

  • President Biden’s budget was deemed dead on arrival because the GOP wants deep cuts to assistance for poor Americans. Elsewhere, Fox News staffers call the environment their “soul crushing,” and Republicans are loosening restrictions on child labor nationwide.

Land of the free........ free to exploit. Federal minimum wage for under 18 is $4.25/hr. Imagine an age-unverified child working in a coal mine for less than 5 bucks an hour. Welcome to the richest country on earth.

I was forced to work by my alcoholic father on a farm in Mississippi that still had the original board plantation sign back in the mid 70's. I was 10 years old when I was taught to drive a tractor. By age eleven I was driving 10 hours in the soybean fields. For one dollar an hour. The land owner LOVED it. Turns out he never matched any social security payments and indeed pocketed what he withheld. 3 years worth. I only found that out when I became disabled at 46. That was sheer abuse because I sure as hell didn't want to be in the Mississippi sun working for those long hours. I wanted to play. Request denied. By lax labor laws & non enforcement of the ones that were & are on the books.

Yes, they are hell-bent on stopping those nefarious drag shows that have done so much damage to our youth, while not lifting a finger to legislate the most basic gun registration and background checks to address what is merely the largest cause of child deaths, higher than cancer, higher than car and roof fall accidents, etc. This shows that they don't REALLY care about children. And loosening child labor laws is all about making it legal to exploit young immigrants. Again, they don't really care about children or child safety; they are not REALLY pro-life. They are pro-power and authority.

Yes, Boebert has been part of and is perpetuating a FOUR GENERATION teen pregnancy cycle. She's PROUD of this, even though statistics show that teen pregnancies lead to severe limitations in both the teen parent's potential and success as well as the child's future potential and success. There is almost nothing more predictive of poor and limited education, associated crime, and a whole host of social and societal high risks resulting from teen pregnancies that make them highly dependent on government support. It is ironic that as she touts her pride for her inter-generational teen pregnancy cycle, she also votes for cutting social safety nets (food stamps, public education funding, public housing, etc.) that very commonly serves teen pregnancy families in need. Boebert is so dumb. She is such a mixed up mess.

As a resident of the state of Arkansas, the child labor law that was passed was only one of two awful things our governor has done. Her sweeping education reform bill nearly guarantees the bankruptcy of rural schools, forcing them to merge, and prop up private schools and home schooling. Oh, and it gives parents the power to complain about what subjects (think evolution, vaccines, etc.) are being taught to their children and the school admin can fire that teacher with impunity.

And this is why I hate the politicians of the state so much. Arkansas is relatively peaceful to live in especially with the abundance of nature that’s all over the place. But these idiotic politicians are like the roaches that infest your dream house. No matter how nice the house is you just can’t seem to get rid of them completely they just keep coming back and infesting the place that it makes it almost uninhabitable. And the people that allow them to continue to get into office are just plain stupid brain dead morons that constantly want to preserve a nonexistent status quo and are frequently shocked at the terrible ideas that they’ve allowed to be unleashed by these morons. This state is going to hell because of morons like her. Every single time she opens her mouth it feels like a sword in my brain and make me genuinely embarrassed to say I’m from here. Our only hope now is that she wrecks the place so bad that come the next election it’ll finally get people off their asses and actually get them to kick her out of office and maybe out of this state for good. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Agreed but the only way to do that is to completely clear the board and start over fresh. Meaning every single current politician in the government has to be removed from power including the courts and a new election system would have to be put in place. Because let’s be honest none of these ass clowns will willingly vote to cut ties with the corporations that bankroll them. But there’s also another problem. As it stands America needs to look strong in front of the world especially with threats of Russia and North Korea that wouldn’t hesitate for a single second to pull something if we were to undergo just a drastic change in leadership. So while it would be great to break that dependence by clearing the board it would also open a whole new Pandora’s Box of problems that wouldn’t end well for anyone involved. So for now we’ll just have to put up with it for the moment and try to do as much damage control as we can and hopefully someday when other countries will finally be able to handle their own sh*t without needing ours to hold their hands then we can finally turn our attention to tearing out this problem at the root.

My dad spent his early years in mining towns in eastern Pennsylvania. His father was a line manager for a coal company and his mom’s father was a founding delegate for the UMW. No tension there. My grandmother died in 1918 during the Spanish flu pandemic, months before my dad’s 8th birthday. On her deathbed she pleaded with her husband not to send her son into the mines. He had already been working on the slag heaps ‘picking coal’. Like so many families, her five children were dispersed through the extended family and never lived together again. But thanks to her and her husband’s respect for her dying wish, not one of them ever worked in the mines. God help America to learn from its history. Amen.

But that wasn't a physically demanding, dangerous job that could mess up my body and potentially end my life. Huuuuge difference.

I started work at 14 in the early 80's, in Jersey. It was pretty normal for extra spending money.
I think there were rules regarding total hours and no-work past 10(?). The rules were often ignored if we wanted more hours, And working papers were required.
It wasnt in a mine or meat processing plant though.
Although, I may -ave preferred a mine to Burger King.
Unfortunately I think we'll see more and more child labor laws relaxed, as we're back to a time where anyone in a family who can work, needs to work to survive, in more cases than we should be willing to accept.
*Correction. I actually started working as a babysitter at 9 for a dollar an hour and all the snacks you wanted.
    It was just normal.
But, it wasn't out of necessity like what's happening now.
