Seagulls rudely woke me up at 545am, so I headed down the coast for a wee unplanned early morning walk. It was 17th April and I hoped I might see the first of the Atlantic Puffins arriving on land for the mating season.

Gorgeous spring morning...wish I was there.
I can smell the sea (and the Puffins) from here in my head.
Nice one Steve! Looked like a lovely early morning walk, even if there were nae puffins to be seen! 😄
They always hide from me anyway 😂
Beautiful coastline! Thanks for sharing it with us!
Cheers Bill!
Great one again Steve.....beautiful morning walk....love that building with the bench & squeegee for the window....guess they thought of everything! All your places there remind me SO much of Newfoundland....I'm sure you can see that too after having been there!
Totally Bob! I think it as well every time, especially on that stretch. I see no icebergs from there though (I really want to come to Newfoundland in iceberg season!)
@@steve-marsh Oh yes....you'd love it....should be on right now thru part of May, but does vary every year.
Just along the coast from Edinburgh is North Berwick and the Bass Rock.
If you take the boat trip from the harbour at N Berwick, around the 'Rock' you'll see loads of Puffins, some swimming in the Firth of Forth around the Rock. Delightful wee birds ! 👍
And that would make a nice video too if I can keep the camera straight :)
Great place ,my kind of walk.Thank for sharing.
Glad you liked it :)
Lots of birds! The ocean shots are amazing. Tomorrow husband and I take off for a week's drive down the Washington and Oregon coast to see lighthouses. It will be rainy, but after 50 years of living in southern Arizona and Denver, Colorado, I really like rain and clouds. See ya next week!
Oh that sounds wonderful! I miss that part of the world so much! Pick me up some Tillamook cheese please 😊
@@steve-marsh I am very happy to report that Mr. D and I were able to enjoy lunch at the Tillamook Creamery twice...once southbound to the ocean, and again northbound on the way home. We had the same thing both times....great grilled cheese sandwiches and a plate of fabulous macaroni and cheese. We raised a lemonade (no tap beer during COVID) to your very good health, and wished you could have joined us! Visited (or viewed offshore) 12 lighthouses. Wonderful trip. P.S. Not so much as a drop of rain! Phenomenal!
Thank you! I like your impromptu vids, watching you discover things, watching you work. haha, even I don't do windows. and yes, love to see maps.
Glad you like them! More to come soon :)
Gorgeous sounds. Thanks for sharing your morning walk.
Thanks Odet! I wasn’t loving them when they woke me up at 545am but all is forgiven 😊
Lovely views ,enjoyed the video
We enjoy your videos! Keep up the adventures! Good job cleaning the windows!
Hah cheers Ray! :)
Mate, your work was excellent 6 months ago. Keep going mate, as whilst this was short it was enjoyable and informative (thanks to your google search obviously!). Well done.
Haha Google was definitely my friend on this morning 😂 thanks so much, keep watching hopefully more to come soon!
You are indeed ambitious for such an early start. I loved seeing the other birds even though there were no Puffins! Too funny! I remember seeing tons of Puffins when we went to NFLD years ago. They are indeed beautiful! Here's to success in your next search!
We're thinking to try the Isle of May Janice - sure to see some there, and of course I'll take the camera :)
Another good tip. Added it to the list of places to visit once we can travel across the pond again.
Cheers Johannes! Fingers crossed for trips soon :)
Great early morning walk!!
May the puffin search continue!! 🤣🤣
I'm hoping we can fit in a wee trip to the Isle of May soon, more chance there :)
I love birds, but seeing all those birds bunched up together makes me realise why people can be frightened of them! Great early morning video!
Cheers Stephanie! Yeah know what you mean!!!! :)
You made my day with this video. But seriously. Thanks a bunch!
Aww thanks so much!!! 😊
@@steve-marsh I mean it. There are times when one can only watch the world through someone else's eyes. And I love that place, even with no puffins. Putting it on my visit list! Maybe some day. Btw, for a brief moment I thought: "Stonehaven, Stonehaven? What football club do they have around there?"
Nice vlog, Steve 👍
Thanks 👍
Amazing views great video
Cheers Jim!
"How do you say it!" Ha that quick zoom in cut...made me chuckle. Fowl Shoe - say it like that and you're on the button I reckon. It'd be cool to see you revisit when there are puffins. Nice wee walk on the coast there Steve.
Haha cheers, my lack of research shines through 😀 next time! Might try some islands for puffins too...
I'm in Ayrshire Steve and the gulls are just nuts from around as early as 04:30
They start swooping down in the future and always catch me out lol - numbers are just growing with every year and some of them are massive.
Thanks again fella.
Totally - I saw some in Stonehaven that could easily pick up a cat or wee dog 😂 I’ve got to remember to close my window at night in Stonehaven!
@@steve-marsh A few in Ayrshire could pick up a fridge lol
@@G4RY1159 We have mosquitos like that in parts of Canada.
Bother! But then, here's to the future! Thanks Steve.
My lack of research let me down! Next time 🙏
Great video steve me and my son kean must venture further north in your fair land as ive said before he loves watching your videos especially of edingburgh as he spots places we have been he just asked me "does steve live in that little house on the cliffs" lol bless him hesbso looking forwad to visiting edingburgh in august thanks again for a great video keep up the good work
Kean - I WISH I lived in that wee house! It is perfect 😊
Went here back in 1982! We saw a few puffins, but loads of Kittwakes and no guillemots. Isle of May (by boat from Anstruther) is a good place for puffins as is Isle of Fidra, though to the latter I've not been there yet. Have fun!
Thanks Janet! Ohhh Isle of May is very much on the list now for a wee video :) and Isle of Fidra which I hadn’t even heard of! 😳
@@steve-marsh Isle of Fidra is off the coast in Firth of Forth, trips go out from North Berwick. I was due to go on one but had to return back home coz of a family emergency. I've only been round Bass rock coz ythe sea was too choppy to land but it was worth even doing that. Isle of May good in early June after eggs have hatched parent birds are busy feeding. Don't wear your Sunday best and take an old hat with you, you may have to chuck it in the washing machine when you get back home (like I did after being on the Farnes Northumbria!) Happy puffin searching!
That was a refreshing early morning stroll Steve, shame about no puffins but plenty of other nesting birds on the perilous looking cliffs, I suffer from vertigo so was hanging on to my seat and hoping for the best, it was an amazing land, sea, and sky scape and sun ⛅️ rise, thank you for thinking about us, I am always up in the early hours so it was nice to keep you company👌🌞
Ohhh I’m the same, I have a healthy fear of cliff edges, especially crumbling ones covered in grass where you have no idea where the real edge is! Thanks for coming along :)
I have had this fear of cliff tops since holidaying in Cornwall as a teenager, and more recently re-living the experience with ‘Poldark’ magnificent scenery but to this day I dream of falling from these great hight’s! I am quite skilled now in the art of scaling them without killing myself! which can only be a good thing,😅😀😅
Great vid once again, Steve! When you have chance, come to Anglesey, North Wales (where I'm from). There's an Island called Puffin Island, there are loads of them there. You can get there by boat from Beaumaris on the west of the island. :)
Sounds like a dream Graeme! Can’t wait to be able to say I’ve actually been to Wales (I’ve no excuse!) cheers, have a great day!
@@steve-marsh and to you both too. :)
We went to Rathlin Island a couple of years ago to see the puffins. They had all buggered off about 2 days beforehand
Haha that’s the kind of rudeness they show to me 😂
Looks a nice spot.
Cracking place, and the coastline gets even more dramatic a bit further on but time beat me on this occasion
Nothing ventured nothing gained Steve but God does love a trier. 10/10 for effort and getting out of bed so early. And, I enjoyed seeing the Guillemots. Have never seen them...
Cheers Thomas! They made up for the lack of puffins 😊
Another good one but not the one I thought was coming lol. Isn't it lovely there. Been to caterline it's a charming place, adrien's of ours stayed in the cottage that belongs to the artist, and yes I agree it's a beautiful place. Till next one and thanks for trip out much appreciated.🥰
Thanks so much Margaret! Yes, a random wee video, kinda wish I’d had more time to go to Catterline etc as well, but that can wait for another time :)
Steve did u see caterline on tv tonight on landward, this is the artist Kim that I mentioned that along with friends stayed in the cottage at caterline. Strange or what eh. Must be phyicic lol😆
Alternate spoiler alert: "This video contains an astounding number of guillemots." What a sight (and sound)! Thanks, Steve.
Haha thanks Susan! They more than made up for the lack of puffins :)
@@steve-marsh They did. But when you find some puffins, it'll be great to see them too.
(I just watched 3,5mins add without skipping😄♥️)
Try again now, the ad might have changed 😂
Great vid. Beautiful coastline.
Did I spot a typo on the plaque for the bird watching shelter?
Thanks Monica :) Oh, I'll need to go back and have a closer look! :)
Nice video Steve, can't believe you get up that early to try to entertain us. Shame you didn't get to see the puffins, charming little fellas aren't they. Take care mate.
They really are funny to watch Bob! It’s my mission now to find them somewhere this year. Cheers :)
Great Video Steve..... Just good to see you outside... :-)) ps: They have been told to put the " Jenners" signs back... :-))
Cheers! Yeah, I was reading about this!!! I hadn’t passed by yet to see how wrong it looked without it!
@@steve-marsh Let us know.. :-)))
farne islands bonnie lad ye canne gan wrang for puffins and load o others
Very on the list now Antony! Cheers!
Definitely go to the Farne Islands. Last time we went was early July when there were plenty of nestlings around. Lots of Puffins with beaks full of sand eels - and dive bombing by Terns. You need a hard hat - we thought we were well cool having brought bump caps, then a seasoned photographer produced a piece of plastic paint pot which he put under his baseball cap!
No puffins but still a wonderful video nonetheless.
Thanks Philip! Next time...😊
Me: "ooh, guillemots"
Steve: "guillemots. Thanks google"
Me: "dammit. I never asked to be a twitcher, it was forced on me. I'm not a geek".
Apparently, I'm a geek.
Haha 😂 geeks are the best!
Hey Steve ..a pedantic know all writes ..if you were looking for Atlantic puffins why would you start at Stonehaven:)
William, it's the puffins who get their geography wrong, not me :D
First and foremost, what is a puffin, Precioussss? :D
You’ll find out when I get the wee fellas on camera 😂 🐦 🐦 🐦
Certainly make a racket
Haha so true David!
"Notice: No puffins were filmed in the making of this video" 🤣
I’ll find them one day 😂
Coin-toss England v Scotland: winner gets best scenery. We (English) lost......😀
Ohhh I’d call it a draw, the coin landed on its edge 😊
