When you were discussing the DVLA being old school witih the letters, I still find it hilarous that the DVLA website to tax a car shuts at 6 like its a corner shop.
It's not old school, it's a legal document, like a contract and they need to be able to verify that you have received the document( through the postie) and can't use it in court as a defense.
@@Vercingetorixeur I work with a number of government organisations where providing a receipt can happen any time, the verification follows later (usually within a business day), and then the real process starts. I see literally no reason at all to close a site.
Will needs to be reigned in, two Fords is insane when you look at what got cut out. Also know your audience, we would all definitely listen to a 3 hour Top 40 Homologation Specials episode..
the rs500 changed touring cars and helped bring on super touring cars OF THE '90s, the best decade of the BTCC. The RS200 shouldn't have been on the list. it never raced a full series
ABsolutely. The wealth of knowledge Edwin would be dropping would probably turn it into a 4-6hr episode. They might even need to cut it into a Part 1 & 2
Ruin for me. Bought an 05 CLK 1.8 kompressor 4 days ago, did an oil change, did the breaks, I was really happy with it. Talked to my mechanic the day afer I bought it, he ordered a timing kit for it, he was going to do it tomorrow and this morning the timing chain slipped, destroyed valves pistons, everything. I'm devastated.
@daccy86 Do people really buy new pairs of trainers when they're dirty? That's mental, I either wear boat shoes or boots, both are over 7 years old and I've never even contemplated replacing them. Another world...
I love that you guys edit in pictures of the cars youre talking about. Eventhough i know a lot of cars, some cars from that era ive never heard of or ive heard of but cant get a picture of what it looks like. So to just sit and listen to you guys talk while just doing things for myself, being able to just take a quick glance at the screen to see what youre talking about is just very easy. So thank editors💪
God I'm so happy this channel has succeeded as well as it has, been following and have watched every episode since the very first Porsche episode and was quite surprised when this podcast was launched but I'm absolutely loving it, first ever podcast I've watched in its entirety and they are all great. what you guys do is my literal dream lol
Can we get some love for Burnout on the TV behind you guys? I get there are no licenced cars, but it was a brilliant arcade racer... Burnout 3: Takedown please 😊
On the argument: In oldschool games, like the og NFS MW, the soundtrack is a must. For modern games, no. The soundtracks of the recent NFS and FH games were mostly trash. In older games, it was mostly solid with several bangers, if you dont like a track, its alright cause the rest is nice. But in modern games they shove in whatever the marketing dept thinks young people like instead of actually picking a good selection.
As a Indonesian who watch your works, its always envy me when you guys got a car really cheap. At least we dont do the strict insurance policy, most of Indonesian dont have any insurance anyway. I just wondering, can you give us some ranking for any asian (exclude Japan) exclusive cars model who dont sell in Europe? Maybe you lads want some The Toyota Avanza for example?😂 Cheers guys
Idea for the car rankings (btw this podcast is fuelling me to get my driving licence) •Iconic race cars from all series •Prototype cars (cars that has rolling chassis) that never made production •Hot hatchbacks from 2000-2010 •Every car both of you have owned in terms of coolness Hope Edwin gets that C55 and will turns the Range Rover into a Budget Bentayga
I think you missed two absolute classic Homologation specials, the Renault Laguna Airflow with the massive front splitter and rear wing to allow Renault to run with Aero in the BTCC and the Peugeot 206 GT with the extended front and rear bumpers as Peugeot wanted to take the 206 rallying but realised it wasn't long enough 😂
Just a word about enforcement cameras - A recent mistake by Liverpool Council means that thousands (including me) don't have to pay fines. The reason? they forgot to send out the 1st letter!
We all make mistakes and get brown letters. I made a misshap with cruise control got caught on a mobile speed camera doing 58 in a 50. Then the post office lost my information I sent off and I went to court and I got 6 points and a £675 fine. The system sucks why can't we do all this online yet? Love the podcast guys and all the content keep up the good work.
Both my cars have 220,000+ miles without issue. They’ve been in my family since new and have been extremely well maintained. I’ve had friends whose cars gave up after 120k. It’s not so much the miles, it’s how they were maintained
win! scored a set of heated leather seats on eBay for my car and will go collect them in a few weeks... also some police constabularies have reported what limits they enforce, eg: 10% +2 for Derbyshire and a lot of the uk. therefore seeing 77 on the speedo (plus most cars under-read by 5-6%) would be acceptable (I think) as long as you're over they can pull you, but I dont think they can punish. there are lists online of what most counties say but normally 10% +2
Bought myself a 190,000 Mercedes Benz E320, runs like a dream with the previous owner regularly servicing the engine. Hope to put an extra 50-60k on it, definitely not selling that on I imagine
i just did a speed awareness course today in trafford manchester (38mph in a 30mph zone while rushing because all my usual roads were closed. im a care worker and we have multiple dying clients to visits every evening) it was ok. i thought the limit on dual carriageways was 60mph (im 59 years old) - it is not - its 70mph . the gents asked lots of nice questions of us - one was "what have we learned today?" - yes ! i answered ive been driving TOO SLOWLY on dual carriageways. how we all laughed . . . . .
we have to have class 1 business insurance because we visit "multiple places of work" as part of our job. - not the same as taxi insurance - although we have to have THAT if we take clients anywhere - which i did in my last care job in Macclesfield . . . . .
33:00 Yeah my dad refuses to buy a car with about like 65,000 miles on it, Even if it was a PD130. I keep telling him it's fine to go over 150 even. My mum back along bought a 2004(?) 3.2 Shogun with 226,000 miles for like £400 as a stop gap whilst the old shogun sport was off the road with a blown engine. Tax was mental, I think £600 a year, but it ran pretty damn good, just expensive to run
No music while driving is wild to me.. Cheeky 10pm speed on some empty backroad with the Horizon 5 OST going just makes you feel like the guy for an hour, like you're just him
I saw online that some of the older speed cameras where I live don't work because they rely on 3G networks, however the council is upgrading them before the end of the financial year so they will work again.
I've been stopped in my escort cosworth for an undersize front plate. The copper said he was glad I had it on as he genuinely just wanted to have a look over my car and it gave him an excuse to stop me, there not all bad guys 😂
Only cos its been bugging me since 1st listening on Spotify;...... BIGGER wheels (not smaller) make a car travel faster than the speedo shows. Smaller wheels make a car accellerate faster but also causes the speedometer to read faster than is actual, meaning they are actually travelling slower. Anyway, love the podcasts guys :) Also, 22:12 lmao
The fact £370 is the cheapest insurance Will has ever had is mind blowing to me. This year is the first time it's cost me more than £300 in maybe 10 years
There has to be 25k of the GR Yaris body shell, but a good number of the body shell were used for the 1.5 CVT version sold only in Japan (no 3 pot 1.6 turbo, no AWD etc). True number of GR Yarii is somewhat unknown.
Cars are ruling right now I'd say. I lost my really nicely restored NB Miata a few weeks ago but picked up a NC Miata with better options, 57k miles, and at $9k I also got a BMW 128i manual with sport package, under 90k miles. Those are probably quite normal in the EU but they are super rare here in the US!
Cars are ruling for me too. I sold my bmw e91 that I’d had for a few months and just didn’t form a connection with. And I bought a very nice frozen white mk6 fiesta st which I’m now only the second keeper of. It’s pretty clean and totally original. Which is rare!!
I agree with Will SO much on the no game music but yes real life driving music AND the volume of said music. My friends will talk about the banger menu music on discord, and I’m like “hmmm, wouldn’t know, turned it off”.
I'm with Will on the music in games. In fact, real life too - I'm a musician and I love music, but when I'm driving I only want to hear the car. The only use I have for stereos in cars is for Bluetooth from my phone for hands-free calls and sat nav.
Thanks for the naswer guys. Actually, I am from Poland, you have good luck with guessing WIll 😆 Also, week Ruined, my Mazda 6 MPS has done 60k km without issues, but now I have done timing chain, gearbox, and still have some more stuff to do. That's why I'm thinking about getting a second car, while the first one is sitting at the mechanic's all the time. Sad times.
I have to admit I’ve also always turned off the music in racing games aswell. My girlfriends always saying, oh this song was in GT2 or GT4 and I’m just like, was it? No idea lol. Menu music stays. When I’m driving I’m driving lol.
Mate of mine had an S-type that over-read by a solid 6-7mph, all the way up to about 70, after that it was closer, but still over by 2-3mph. Standard wheel & tyre sizes. 🤷🏼
Best guess why they couldn't insure the Limo is its probably considered a commercial vehicle based on weight or passenger capacity. I know like in the US you need a commercial license to operate a stretch limo that can seat 16 passengers.
Ok, you want to know if it is rule or ruin for me? It's ruin atm. I have a BMW e46 318Ci. Not the beefiest car in the world, but it gets the job done of hauling my ugly arse from point A to point B comfortably. However, my passenger mirror never fully worked. The heating works, electrical adjustment semi-works but it doesn't fold - and it should. I ordered a new one, wanted to finally replace it after 5 years of driving without a fully working mirror and guess what? The shop sold me the wrong one and I can't return it since it's been bought months ago and just sat in my closet, waiting to be installed. So I missed my return window. So yeah, for now I'm stuck with a passenger mirror with 1 out of 3 functions working. I want to get rid of this car, someone please buy it off of me.
Been watching since day one & new episodes are a highlight of my work week. If you do come to the east coast, feel free to drop me a line if you need any food recommendations in DC (from there) & Philly (live there). My boss races up at Lime Rock in CT which could be a cool stop for y’all if you end up near New York. All the best and thanks for all the entertainment!!
Ruin for me for sure. MOT due next month so went in for a quick brake check. Discs all round, pads all round, 2 callipers, top mount, battery a set of wiper blades and negative a grand in my bank later... Literally just had springs, DPF and exhaust done too... At what point to I just call it a day 😭
Im from South Africa ,my dad and wife are one of those that focus on milage. Also dont understand my interest in older cars. I agree keep up the maintenace and your car will last. I hit 300 000km on my 2004 Fiesta before having to sell it for a more family friendly car.
Enjoyed both your chats with Ben Fowler, being obsessed with cars can be a pain, for a while be been thinking of selling my e3 M3. And in its place either a TVR chimera, MX5, vxr8, old mini, Audi rs4 avant, another 205 gti, the list goes on 🤷🏼♂️
Racing game music can be a double edged sword. I really loved a ceratin track from NFS Underground. Ride by Lost prophets. Only to then hear about their leads other interests... and that was the last time I could happily go listen to that track.
It's a Ruin for me this week boys. I have a low mileage 2011 Honda CBR250R (yes a motorcycle) with a Repsol Livery and I dropped a spanner on the Fuel Tank which chipped some of the paint off it. Fortunately it isn't a big chip but I know it's there and therefore it has ruined my sleep.
1:07:33 It depends on the game, but I also turn the music off. Especially in most racing games (I say "most" because Burnout Paradise just isn't the same without it, though I do disable certain songs), since while I do like some of the songs, it's generally only one or two on each "station". So I just disable the music entirely. Plus, I want to hear the cars. I also usually either watch RUclips (or Netflix, Disney+, etc.) on the side, or am in Discord with friends, and I also don't like having music going while I'm doing that. Minecraft is the other game where I instantly turn the music off, mainly for the same reasons. If I want music while I'm playing that, I'll just listen to Spotify If it's a story-based game though, I'm generally just focused on the game, and the music can be important to the feel of it, so I leave it on in those. For example, Far Cry 3 wouldn't be the same without "Make It Bun Dem" by Skrillex and Damian Marley during "Kick the Hornet's Nest" (the weed field burning mission), and Dark Souls (and Elden Ring) wouldn't be the same without the epic boss music
Problem is with the homologation special list is there are very few wrong answers, because they are all great cars. Little surprised to see no Impreza mentioned though, but I guess the TME was the 2000s WRC representative.
It seems like so many car brands nowadays are doing “money grab” cars. It’s like new cars have no substance so they’re robbing credibility from their older, actually good, models. For example, ford mustang Mach E, Chevy Blazer, ford maverick, etc.
Old Gatso cameras aren't all on. I was told as much on a speed awareness course. Easy to tell as well, the ones that are on have the flash bulb installed. Wont help you first time you pass them though.
Regarding those "police theories". In Poland both are kind of true. First, there is an unwritten rule (of course, it is more believed rather than actual statement anywhere) that you can exceed the speed limit up to ~10 km/h because this is the margin for both speedometer error and camera error. Secondly, there are camera boxes which do not have device in them so they are inactive. However they can become active any time if device is put inside so it still can work as "scarecrow".
16:30 every speedo should be over. I think there's a requirement from manufacturers, at least in Australia, for this to be the case. That's why in a 100 zone I can sit on 107, and only be actually doing 102 (2 over is legal).
1:16:20 I was 20 and bought my first BMW 320 on the way home Beenie man-who am I came on the radio. Zim zimmer who got the keys to my bimmer😎 I remember singing out loud to myself I’ve got the keys to my bimmer
Do a podcast rating the top 40 cars of all time, could narrow it down to era or classes of car but would love to see you both argue over which car would be the over all crown jewel✌️
I ones made 93 mph on a 68 mph highway in Sweden at 2 am in my MX5 ND2 RF. A police car followed me in the dark, I didn't see it was a police car. After two minutes they pulled up besides me and looked at me... I braked and the police car pulled away. Nice police officers, no cars on the road. :D
It's so difficult agreeing with both of you on the music thing. Yes, I want to listen to my hand-crafted playlist super loud and really settle into the vibe whilst driving. Also yes, I want to hear my exhaust note because it's damn divine...
Hey team great podcast on Ben Fowler road to success and loving both channels. Auto Alex really done spoil us with all the channels. Been a fan since car throttle and love watching every episode keep it up doing a fantastic job. Much love from Australia to all the crew auto Alex , top dead centre 😉 and all the gear. Fddking legendary thanks team and keep up the cleaning Edwin 😁 🧽
on the side of police pulling you over, they can pull you over for whatever reason they want. the 10% myth is a real thing, but its to do with speed cameras and not across all forces.
If Ben had done pick either the RS200 or the Sierra, you would have had a spot for the CLK. That's entirely Ben's fault that the CLK was booted off the list.
No Superbird?!?!?!?! Two hundred twenty miles an hour (racing version, so it is claimed), 0-60 in 5.5, 426 Hemi, and outrageous looks all combining in a car that dominated NASCAR racing so hard, they changed the engine displacement rules so GM would have a fighting chance (Ford was smart and also made an aero wing car, out of the Torino). Less than 2000 made, and units now sell for mid six figures at auction. Plus, The King from Pixar's 'Cars' was a Superbird. I don't see Pixar making movies about the M1... Anyway, this was just a goof. While I love old MOPARs, I'm not surprised car lovers from Europe don't care much about American muscle cars much, since they don't have much to do with them. Euro and Japanese cars make total sense for you to care more about. We get it, and we promise Americans are fine with that. Besides, it's your damn list; do with it what you want! Cheers!
Drove home the other week, there was some horrid box (can't remember it) with other the LED brake lights working, and even that was at a weird angle. Cop car behind, pretty sure it was traffic, while the car was on its brakes. The car turned off and the police went another way. You can get away with anything nowadays (can even provide the dash cam clip)
You think DVLA letters are old school, come to Northern Ireland where you can only get an MOT test at government test centres rather than approved garages. Which is only slightly more inefficient in principle, but then you find out the MOT centres are working on an 18 month backlog because they found cracks in all their car lifts 😂
When you were discussing the DVLA being old school witih the letters, I still find it hilarous that the DVLA website to tax a car shuts at 6 like its a corner shop.
If anything corner shops are open longer!

Considering how much Edwin loves cleaning the cars. Wish he would clean his shoes!
Every CREAM ep I think this. Please sort out a new pair
I think that's the least of their concerns, got the old trusties on in the workshop, I don't think anyone is gonna wear new clean shoes there
That’s how vans are meant to be

I ordered a new one, wanted to finally replace it after 5 years of driving without a fully working mirror and guess what? The shop sold me the wrong one and I can't return it since it's been bought months ago and just sat in my closet, waiting to be installed. So I missed my return window. So yeah, for now I'm stuck with a passenger mirror with 1 out of 3 functions working. I want to get rid of this car, someone please buy it off of me.
If your biggest issue with a 24 year old BMW is the mirror not folding I would say you’re winning!
Just sell the mirror and get the right one 🤷🏻♂️
At what point to I just call it a day 😭
Can’t help but notice the midnight club 3 in the background so many good memories ❤
And in its place either a TVR chimera, MX5, vxr8, old mini, Audi rs4 avant, another 205 gti, the list goes on 🤷🏼♂️
31:49 Huge fan of yours here. Been watching since TDC started (watched Overdrive as well). And I'm Iranian
Brilliant episode! For me cars ruin this week - had to get our starter motor replaced.
Racing game music can be a double edged sword. I really loved a ceratin track from NFS Underground. Ride by Lost prophets. Only to then hear about their leads other interests... and that was the last time I could happily go listen to that track.
Agree on the the no music front, both in game and real life. Perhaps at most 1% of my total driving time has been while listening to music.
Ruin, I bought a cheap Giulietta that has a broken rear wiring loom and it needs discs & pads. It's an Alfa but I love it
"WHATS IT GOT STUNTMAN" holy shit are you fellow neutral droppers?
It's a Ruin for me this week boys. I have a low mileage 2011 Honda CBR250R (yes a motorcycle) with a Repsol Livery and I dropped a spanner on the Fuel Tank which chipped some of the paint off it. Fortunately it isn't a big chip but I know it's there and therefore it has ruined my sleep.
Loved that. Great content. Music on.
If I want music while I'm playing that, I'll just listen to Spotify
If it's a story-based game though, I'm generally just focused on the game, and the music can be important to the feel of it, so I leave it on in those.
Metro 6R4 . What a machine
definetly rule this week for me, picked up a set of brand new weds kranze cerberus monoblocks with brand new toyo proxes for 230 quid!
not the best by a long shot but my favourite homologation specials- superbird, 850r (not sure it counts but whatever), alfa 155 silverstone edition
I would have included the Nissan Pulsar GTIR. Such a cool car to me
Regarding those "police theories".
Oh you can do a list of racing games wit the best soundtrack. Heres my vote: Driver San Fran. Love that soundtrack
1:16:20 I was 20 and bought my first BMW 320 on the way home Beenie man-who am I came on the radio. Zim zimmer who got the keys to my bimmer😎 I remember singing out loud to myself I’ve got the keys to my bimmer
6R4 wasn't turbo'd though, which was probably their major downfall when running against a bunch of cars that could wind boost on.
Ruin, I still own a citroen...
"The path to success is paved with brown letters"
Never heard anything more true
Holy molly. The 33 Stradale is the most beautiful car ever made. Only Bertone wedges hold a candle to it.
Cheers!
Rule for me. Despite the cold weather my MX5 still starts up fine every day
Drove home the other week, there was some horrid box (can't remember it) with other the LED brake lights working, and even that was at a weird angle. Cop car behind, pretty sure it was traffic, while the car was on its brakes. The car turned off and the police went another way. You can get away with anything nowadays (can even provide the dash cam clip)
I literally do have an Aygo, and yeah you can drive it if you want lol. IMO the 3cyl sounds much better than most boring 4cyl's
You think DVLA letters are old school, come to Northern Ireland where you can only get an MOT test at government test centres rather than approved garages. Which is only slightly more inefficient in principle, but then you find out the MOT centres are working on an 18 month backlog because they found cracks in all their car lifts 😂
I'm with Will no music ENGINE noise baby!
Hiring an rx8 in Tokyo and driving through the mountains to Fukushima was an absolute RULE
Please consider explaining what a torque converter is and how it works. Thank you
My gran didn't have an MG metro, when I was a kid she had a 1.2 Merit Vauxhall Nova. The worst of that era and style of cars. What a pile
Flat rear arch .. 👌🏼 and worth a pretty penny these days
Talking about the audi rebrand at 9:00 what do you think about the jaguar rebrand?
Brown letters are either DVLA or HMRC both breed huge levels of anxiety when seen at the front door after delivery!
