Make sure to watch the disclaimer and only try this if you're fine with the risk of making the damage worse. I repair scratched glass for a living and see failed DIY attempts that end up requiring a professional to come fix. Be careful!

Having had some experience polishing some glass I will say that most of the 'scratches' that people want to remove can't be. Especially if it's deep enough to catch your fingernail on. You're not going to 'polish' away that much glass. In most cases what you're able to do is 'obscure' the scratch by smoothing out or polishing the rough peaks in the 'channel' or valley of the scratch so it won't refract the light. I use jewelers rouge sometimes and it also depends how hard or soft the glass is. Unless you use a machine polisher, with these light abrasives by hand you'll be working on it a while, which is safe but tedious.

    • @TheLabOtomy
      @TheLabOtomy  Год назад +1

Indeed, glass is really hard and you polish it with something really gentle. Success will depend on depth of the scratch and dedication. Thanks for the feedback.

Hi Amanda, the first thing to check is how deep the scratch is. If it catches a nail, then polishing it back to a smooth surface will take a lot of time (remember we are rubbing something really gentle - not to create additional scratches - against something really hard). At the end of the video, I have listed other products that professional repair guys use to fix deeper scratches. Hope it works out for you.

I just went in and tried the first solution, a bit of toothpaste on a microfiber towel, rubbed for about 20 seconds, and it was gone. I can't see it at all anymore. I am THRILLED. Thank you so much! Just for anyone's information, I used my nanohydroxyapatite toothpaste, originally developed by NASA, as I understand, and the first thing it does in your mouth is heal cracks. I know it's worked in my mouth to heal tiny fractures in my teeth, so I'm not surprised it worked on my mirror.

**HERE’S THE INFO YOURE LOOOKING FOR**
Easy way to remove scratches from a mirror (and probably windows, as well). I just did this and made a deep scratch disappear in less than 2 minutes.
    1. Take a piece of 000 steel wool and unfold/unroll it so it is a single layer, and then fold it in half.
    2. Stretch it gently so it can be loaded into a palm sander like a 1/4 sheet of sandpaper normally would be. An orbital sander with a hook and loop attachment could likely also be used, and might not even require unfolding the steel wool.
    3. Turn the sander on and go over the scratch with gentle pressure in a circular motion. It should begin to disappear almost immediately!

Yes, the deeper the scratches the more difficult to remove (well the more time it takes to polish in fact). It sounds superficial, so give it a try. Just be careful to often check for progress as your work and not overdo it (or just like the sponge, you may create more scratches). Good luck!

One pro tip that I discovered MYSELF:
If you have circular scratches, DO NOT TRY TO Rub WITH A CIRCULAR MOTION. Why daddy? Because you will make the scratches even worse and deeper and harder to remove. What’s the solution daddy? The solution is easy and fast which and I will show you who’s the boss:
    1. If the scratches are circular, then do not rub in a circular motion. Rub in a vertical motion for more than 2 minutes straight and less than 5 minutes then in a horizontal motion for more than 2m and less than 5m, why daddy? Because if you rub too much straightly you will end up messing the work you’ve done WITHOUT knowing. (and make sure to check the progress if you feel uncomfortable)
    2. If the scratches are horizontal, then rub vertically. Why daddy? If you rub a horizontal scratch horizontally you may scratch the scratch deeper and make it harder to remove.
    3. If the scratches are vertical, then rub horizontally . Why daddy? If you rub a vertical scratch vertically you may scratch the scratch deeper and make it harder to remove.
    4. The same with tilted scratches like half horizontal and half vertical scratch, just reverse the ways. (If it’s vertical, rub horizontally. Or if it’s horizontal, rub vertically)

Deepens on how deep they are. if catches your nail, better use pro-dedicated products or you are on for hours of polishing

Guys, this works but on very very shallow scratches, i had 2 very small scratches on my pc side glass panel from my backup radiator, that i wont be using ever again !!!
I rubbed with toothpaste 5 times and baking soda 2 times, it went away, i cannot notice it anymore, unless i take it out and put flashlight on it from a certain angle and even then its hard to spot.
