    It's interesting that the Alphafly feels easier but is only marginally faster over shorter distances. Again, it was designed for marathons where every bit of saved energy adds up to faster times. Probably not the shoe for running 5k or 10k, but I'll probably break down and buy a pair anyway lol!

      True however even using them on hit training "sprints" they reduce stress on the body by a lot. Making it possible to at least add another session each week.

    Can't believe the difference. I just bought the 2nd Gen ones and from my first warm up the speed vs HR/PE was insane. I have immediately bought a second pair because I'm going to invest in running most of my training in them given sciatic issues and being four operations deep into my left knee.

    The Alphafly makes a big difference to elite athletes and only over a certain minimum speed required to benefit from their energy return properties. If you are only an average athlete forget about it as it could be even harder to activate and make you rub slower not faster. Elite marathon runner on the other hand, they represent a huge advantage

    Nice test, really impressive, especially on long runs, will that make the difference. But you're right more training would have the same effect, at least for the normal runners😉 For 300 bugs I get 3-4 of my normal running shoes.
    The Topic of shoes is very interesting, do you have more than one pair for your normal runs, or do you have shoes for different runs for example forest or concrete. Please make a video about that😊

    I am super late to the game on the alphaflys. 1 because initially they were hard to get and 2 the price is ridiculous. Nike now has lots in stock and black Friday deals presented and opportunity I couldn’t resist. I like u was super skeptical think it was all marketing hype. My initial impression of the shoe is wow. I kept looking down at my clock and the thought “wow I shouldn’t be running this fast at only this amount of effort” kept running through my head. Other than the $, the only complaint I have is that the mid foot was unusually narrow. But after running, that stopped bothering me. Yes they are expensive. But if u can get them on sale, the hype is real.

Assuming you run 50km per week, and the lifespan of shoes is 1000km or less, it means you would have to change those shoes after less than 6 months? The difference you are showing is huge over longer races. Also, the Nike is designed to not beat up the legs as much over distance. That is really a big factor towards the end of a long race. Training more is not a factor. You will still be faster on the Nike even if you are in better condition.

    Actually, saying this shoes are for elite only is not entirely true. I’m a lousy runner with a slow and moderate pace. I struggled running non-stop for 60 mins with other shoes, but with the Alphafly, I finished 60 mins run with relative ease. However, in order to run in this shoes with slow and moderate pace, you need to be more neutral in your foot strike. Over pronation or supination on these marsh mellow will result in a unstable platform. I’m lucky to be able to fit in Alphafly 2 as they are slightly wider. The arch is narrow but I’m do not experienced any blood blisters as others. I definitely hope that I can break into the shoe further.

    I think you should do this workout, (6x2 km or any workout you like) with regular trainers on one day, then the same workout with the AlphaFlys on the next day. I think the heart rate data might be a little off, because if you start with the Alpha Flys on the first interval, then the regular shoes on the next interval, won’t your heart rate already start off higher with the regular shoes? I think if you do this experiment and found the average of all 6 intervals with the same shoe on one day, then the other shoe for all 6 on the next day, you’re fully rested and then can accurately find the heart rate average

    • @goranwinblad
      @goranwinblad  3 года назад +2

      Since I switch between each interval I think this comparison is more fair then doing it on different day since the heart rate can vary quite much on different days. I started with the Hokas on the first interval to don't give the Alphafly any advantages at least. Also the heart rate did not go up for each interval it stayed pretty much the same for the different shoes. I think it helped to do a long and quite tough warmup.

    There is something that is not accounted for in this test. The cushioning of the Alphafly will allow you to run harder longer. It will take less toll on the legs and feet in longer distances.

    Excellent test! it would be cool if you tested other "super" shoes as well, like the Brooks Hyperion Elite 2, Adidas Adios Pro etc. If you can afford it :) Overpronators may struggle a bit with Alphafly. Maybe all super shoes are difficult dt. the softness of the mid-sole.

    Tjena, grym video :) Hade varit riktigt intressant att se en video där du pratar om puls och hur den skiljer sig från löpare till löpare. Du har en imponerande låg puls exempelvis för att springa intervaller på 75% av maximal effekt, medan andra, som jag, hade legat i 170 - 180 vid samma träningseffekt. Jag ligger oftast i 150 - 160 i puls på mina lågintensivsrundor och tycker inte alls det är jobbigt (prattempo liksom) medan andra ligger nere på 120 - 130 i puls och kommer dem upp i 160 så är det högintensivt. Det är inte alls stor skillnad på min puls om jag ligger i ett 5:30 tempo eller 4:40 tempo kanske upp till 10 slag mer i 4:40 fart, men är såklart mer ansträngande. Vet inte vad jag vill komma med detta haha men undrar varför vissa har högre puls än andra även om dem skulle kunna prestera på samma nivå? :-)

    • @goranwinblad
      @goranwinblad  3 года назад

      Tack kul att du gillade videon! 😊 ja är stora individuella skillnader på var maxpulsen ligger, men verkar inte vara något som påverkar prestation finns världselitlöpare både med väldigt hög och låg maxpuls. Jag har lägre maxpuls än dom flesta i min ålder den ligger på 183. Tack för förslaget, kanske gör en video om puls framöver 😊

      GL Gill and congratulations on getting back to the running lifestyle. I’m a devout Alphafly owner and have been running in them since they released to the public last year. At 240lbs, I can definitely confirm that these will help reduce the impact on your body. Just ease into it and exercise caution on uneven ground and sharp turns. Cheers 🍻

    Also, doing intervals back to back is not a valid way to check your HR variability. You were already in fatigue from the first set of intervals, and you went into the second interval with a higher HR and thus would impact the difference. Try this with 1 shoe on 1 week, then wait a whole week and try the other shoe. Then do this 4-5 x and compare the averages.

    • @goranwinblad
      @goranwinblad  3 года назад +1

      Well actually my heart rate stayed really consistent on all intervals with the Alphafly and all intervals with the Cliftons I think switching between each interval and doing longer and many intervals is the best way you can do a test like this (still not at all scientific mainly because it's just one person and heart rate is not the best measurement would be better to have a oxygen oxygen uptake test). These intervals was not super tough for me so I did not get more fatigue after each interval. I think comparing the heart rate from one week to another is really hard to get something out of at least for me my heart rate vary a lot from day to day depending on several different factors, for example over all stress both from training and work/life, temperature also effect it a lot so if the temperature in the gym would be some degrees higher or lower that would effect my heart rate more than the difference between the shoes. Also doing it over several weeks would mean that I had to live/train the exact same way for several weeks and spend a lot of time on a test I just do for fun and to get some indication. But thanks for your suggestion anyway!

    Energy return like this in a racing context is cheating in my book. It is basically a spring and if a spring is allowed, then you might as well go with a really big cartoonish one and have it done. Looks like good fun though

    ooops, hit return. The marathon record still has not been broke. He didn't run in a sanction race, 2 he had pacers 3 he had a timer to follow to see what he was running and tell where he needs to be to make the record. So he didn't break the 2 hour record. He is still a great runner. I look forward to see him run in Tokyo, to see if he can break the 2 hour record.

    Hey sorry to bother you. Really looking to buy these shoes. Cost isn’t an issue (only cause I live a simple life and I think I deserve to splurge on one or two things in life).
    I run mostly as a supplement to JiuJitsu. They’re usually fasted consisting of 3 times a week with a variation of 3-9 miles, 2-3 miles with sprint intervals, or a mile for warm up with extended amounts of sprints before doing JiuJitsu/wrestling related drills in the garage.
    Two out of the 3 days involves sprint training. Some days are 100 yards, others are up to 400 yards. Are these going to be ok for the sprint portion? If not, how so? Everyone says amazing things about these but admittedly they’re usually marathon runners. Wondering what are the cons for using it for sprints as well other than maybe more wear on the shoe. Thanks!

    Hey Goran, thanks for the cool video. Just curious... how was the traction? The slick outsole on both the VF and AF i think it makes them a one-trick pony (run on the road in dry conditions). Also did you swap the shoes after every interval or you just did two consecutive blocks of three with each shoe? And if so which one first? Just wondering if fatigue was also a factor in the difference between the two HR averages (if not wrong that was below the advertised 4%, although that's obviously been tested in a lab etc). Not a fan of this whole shoe trend tbh.

    • @goranwinblad
      @goranwinblad  3 года назад +3

      Hey Andrea! Thanks! I think the robber on the shoe should provide ok traction even on wet roads (I just tried them a bit on a wet road and felt the grip was fine). Yeah I switched between each interval rep to make the fatigue factor as little as possible and I started with the Hokas to at least not give the AF any advantages there. Yeah my test showed below 4% about 2,7% faster with the AF on the same HR but of course my test are quite limiting only testing on my self for example. Ok I'm also skeptical in some ways to this new running shoes making running more of a material sport. But I also see plenty of positive aspects, I see many people who like gear and different cool shoes makes them more motivated and in return makes them run more. Also more expensive products connected to running means more marketing money going to the shoe companies and when they advertise for shoes they also in a way advertise for running so I guess there are some good side effects as well.

      Yes that's why I alternated between the shoes, and started with the cliftons to at least not give the Alphafly advantage there.
