I think there is a difference between Triple A and double A or single A that the industry and the public seemed to have forgotten or is confused about, people assume that triple A games are the normal games, triple A began with the 360 and ps3 generation and are games that are not just videogames but more like spectales., are cutting edge experiences, i would say that the less budget games have more space to improve in gameplay and game mechanics and those are the proper videogames., since the 360 we are really taking the cutting edge experiences as the "normal" ones and that view has made almost impossible to make "normal" videogames anymore, everything must be cutting edge and when those projects fail kills studios
You can't forget something that doesn't exist. AAA is just shorthand for big budget. You can have triple A indie games. And then there's B budget which is majority of indie and Japanese niche games and then you have shovelwear
@@fillerbunnyninjashark271 Yes but that big budget is not used to make "better" games but more like to make a visual show, a cutting edge spectable, that´s the difference, the irony is that, the bigger the budget the narrow the improvement on "game" aspects, since failure means death at that level, affects in less variety, less games and less everything, i rather take A or double A games made by professionals than indies, i´m sorry but indies are 90% of the time rough bad games

I find it interesting that NieR Automata, a game I hold very very dearly, is the most PS3 looking game ever made with it's PS3 repeating buildings it's PS3 anime people and its weird invisible walls around every PS3 building, NEVER gets called "PS3 looking" and everyone just pretends it doesn't look exactly like a PS3 game with more particle effects just because the writing and characters are so good. But when it's something like this game, suddenly "It looks like a PS3 Game" is a valid criticism meant to make us see it as being low quality.
I don't agree with this much to be honest, I've played a ton of PS3 games and none of them look like Automata. To your point, it's definitely not a AAA PS4 release, it does look noticeably more jank and outdated compared to its higher budget contemporaries, but not quite on the level of a PS3 game and not nearly as much as Stranger of Paradise. SoP has a literal, perceptible CRUST of PS3 caked on top in a way that just isn't the case with Automata. But ya know, agree to disagree and all that.
Nier is a bad game with good reviews not only for what you say which includes being super big and not performing well, but because the lack of enemy variety, non existent decision making bad characters, boring plot, etc you cannot even finish your enemies a cutscene interrupts it any time.
Nier Automata has a distractingly tiny map that no one seemed to mention. I was a bit amused by how often I had to retread the same areas I've already been to for several side quests and even the main quest if we count route B
@@DanielSantosAnalysis Yeah I guess that's fair. I adore Automata but it definitely has more technical limitations than other games on PS4 I've been playing. However it IS the first game to make me physical cry so there is that. I do think my point still stands tho. But then people who unironically refer to themselves as "gamers" often seem to only use graphics as a way to praise a game they like or pan a game they dislike. (I'm talking about the kind of people who care waaaaaay too much about fps. Not people who just... you know... play games.) If people dislike Stranger of Paradise they should just say why rather than revert immediately to graphics, is what I'm getting at 😂

We love to hear that amazing Paperboy 2 ost in all of its glory at the start :P I think you’re sold me on this game, it looks great and I love the Final Fantasy 9 callbacks as well. If you really want to embrace the PS3-aura the game emits, if you use performance mode on base PS4 it regularly brings down the resolution to well below 720p, or at least it did in the demo, so really adds to the experience ;)
Nice video. Thanks for uploading, it made for a good watch. Just an FYI though for those thinking about picking this up there is a select all button for inventory management btw, have to press a button to bring up a sub menu, you can then dismantle all selected (if in the Smithy menu) or shove everything selected into storage. For anyone playing through the game use optimize as you go through the story and shove everything else into storage, by the time your storage is full you can dismantle all of your storage and know you have a ton of more recent stuff to tide you over as you build up your hoard again. Also pre order weapons and the starting armor for all characters are immune to dismantling whether they are locked or not. Late game and post game is when you want to manually equip stuff because by that point the affinity %'s will be large enough to play around with (though definitely do this earlier if you feel stuck). At least that's how I dealt with the loot pinata the game throws at ya and kept what little sanity I still have XD
I just platinum'd this game a few hours ago. What a blessing the algorithm gave me for this recommendation. My only issue with the game is that the story mission in Delkfutt Tower gave me an ocular migraine for the first time in my life which was a pretty distressing event at the time.
It took this one video to sell me on SOP. I bought it, and while I only play it in spurts due to its difficulty (I can't bring myself to lower the difficulty further) and the rest of my backlog, the game is unyieldingly charming and fun. Thanks for the glowing recommendation, and excellent video.
God, this game is like... too pretty lol. When everything's moving and glowing and reflecting and the contrast and saturation are wild it kinda shuts down my brain and makes it look like all look like an undifferentiated mass of swirling colors and piercing white lights. What I agree very much about is that graphical jankiness not always subtracts from the experience but it sometimes adds to it. My gaming upbringing was usually characterized by a "generation behind" console and underpowered PC. I played PS1 well into PS2 years, only had PSP well into PS3 gen, my PC gave up on gaming around the BioShock release. I of course catched up since then, but thanks to the limitations I had in the past I grew rather tolerant to framerate dips and other visual imperfections. In no small part due to that I'm often sympathetic towards games (and even hardware) that are "underdogs" in technical aspects. Framerate, shading, aliasing, materials, you name it, can be used to strengthen the aesthetic of a game. Even if not fully intentionally. If movies are shot sometimes deliberately on old film, use shaking cameras, overexposed or underexposed shots, etc. for artistic effect, I see no reason why games can't follow similar principles if need be. And ultimately, the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Also, Thor is as good as ever - writing, taste, wit, all that shit. Thank you for your content :)
Great video. This is my GOTY as well. I thought you’d have to be a hardcore action gamer to really appreciate this game, so it’s really awesome to see you enjoyed it while focusing mostly on non gameplay stuff in this video. This game is truly a gem. Btw, what is the intermission music?
Damn. As someone who’s lived her whole life in a few different Southern US states, you got “generic southern dude” down pretty convincingly. Well done! 👍🏻
Yeah this game is fucking great. In my opinion it's everything a videogame should be: epic, entertaining, well-paced pure FUN. I think it's going to be one of those Final Fantasy games that takes about a decade before the majority of the fanbase starts singing its praises, just like Final Fantasy 12.
Between Elden Ring and Stranger of Paradise, i preordered only one, being a souls fan and all Waited patiently for one And was hype for only one. I NEEDED to kill chaos And have the cheap Gamestop hat to prove it

I had to have watched the intro alone like 20+ times now, love the visuals in the first few seconds and the keyboard smash discord message is just as funny every time. thank u for da good content, Thor
I'm not sure I buy your point around 8:00. Some artists really don't know what they're making even if they think they do. A creator doesn't need to be as clueless as Tommy Wiseau for their work to fly well off target. A game like Metal Gear Rising or God Hand likely lands very close to where it was intended to, but I doubt a game like The Bouncer does. Hell, even the way the original MGS series is received is well off from what Kojima likely intended, given how seriously the man himself takes some of the farcically delivered messages.
There also was that interview where the develovers admitted being confused by all the chaos memes. It seems they were trying to play it straight. Not saying that it's bad or anything, genuine stuff is rare these days.
Well it can be a bit of both. The Chaos thing seems like the devs didn't mean for it to be a joke, but you literally will never convince me that the "Bullshit" scene, which was *updated to have better comedic timing,* is just accidentally funny.
Reminder that Hideo Kojima isn't the only writer on the MGS series, in fact there's usually three writers that aren't Hideo working on most of his MGS games. Plus what about 3 basically being a goofy Bond movie? I think Hideo has more self-awareness than many people give him credit for, since his memetic public image is probably crafted and curated.
a more important angle to the whole "writers who don't know what they're doing so lol" vs the "writers know exactly what they're doing" intent of storytelling- and it's often, tellingly, foreign storytelling that gets painted as the former- is that, in videogames, there are way too many people involved for someone to truly have a Tommy Wiseux style weird accident. *if* it did happen, it certainly wouldn't happen to a Square-Enix AAA game, it would happen to an indie game production- and even those tend to have too much riding on them. So you have to assume that people fully believe in Tetsuya Nomora's writing for the game to have been made- least of all because he certainly isn't doing it all on its own. I don't personally find myself understanding or relating to it, but I have to assume, by all logical conclusion, it's entirely intentional
i love this game. I am determined to get to level 300. No one will ever convince me a soulslike with FF classes isnt the craziest thing yet! Level design is a ponder tho. Also use select all! You can even filter! I loved Sophia. She was just the best. From the moment she popped up...
horrifying how some of you like didn't even watch the video at 8:12 and just decided to do the same pigheaded engagement with this game he calls out. the internet really loves to just repeat jokes they saw on reddit on repeat for the rest of their lives
Being intentionally campy and cringe is still campy and cringe. At this point that's basically a trademark of Japanese writing, this just leans into it a bit more than some games. Some people are going to hate that.
This game is great, and so is this video. Instant sub. It's easily also my GOTY 2022, but I feel it could've been even better... I went in expecting a somewhat higher-budget Nioh 2, but it's actually missing some really great features and design choices Nioh 2 had. I hate to be that guy that compares games like that (especially considering the two games are very different enough in their own right), but it honestly feels like Square Enix pushed to release the game sooner than intended just to meet a deadline. Even disregarding the Nioh 2 comparisons, there's the performance/optimization issues on PC, for instance. So yeah, also fuck Square Enix for rushing it... I'd rather have waited a couple more months to get a more polished and optimized product. Also, maybe this game wouldn't have gone under so many people's radars if it hadn't been released so close to what's probably the most hyped Action-RPG ever, but that's just me theorizing.... Oh well, here's hoping Team Ninja will push some patches like they've done with previous games.

This game will become a cult classic in 5 or so years once zoomers stop complaining about the edgy writing and that it isn't like their favorite cinematic third person action shooters and it will have a similar come back to how New Vegas returned few years after release. People just need some time to figure out what this game is, what it tries to accomplish and how to like it for what it is instead of what it could be.
Thank you, I hate it when games try to be cinematic in gameplay cause "Muh ImMerision and Muh Storytelling!". Games are about gameplay! Want cinematics? Go watch a movie.
Apparently all you need for a FF game to be good nowadays is good graphics. I'm not personally looking forward to FF16 because it just looks like 15 reskinned with medieval coating, but I remember people being like "Oh the graphics are so bad!!!" when the first trailer came out. Like do you want Order 1886 levels of graphics or something? The more graphics a game has, the harder it is to run, the more space it takes up, and if 15 is anything to go by, the less content you get.
@@TheCyclicGamer I don't care about graphics much, and I can't speak on Final Fantasy 15 because when I played it at launch I hated it, but when I picked it up on PC years later with all the DLC released, I loved it. Not saying it's a perfect game by any means but I had a blast with it. I also don't blame you for your skepticism about FF16. I haven't even been keeping track, honestly. I will say more graphics = harder to run is not necessarily true. The thing that makes a game is optimization, and SE is utter shit at it. I can't even play the Final Fantasy 13 trilogy (some of my favorite games in the series; there goes my credibility as an FF fan) without heavily modding all of them, despite having a computer that's more than qualified to run them.

I've been playing the PC version because single-digit FPS has never stopped me before and I love this game without any ounce of irony. The dialogue is endearing, the combat is amazing and I love the fanservice to other FF titles in how they didn't shoehorn them more like they thought "what other FF has a location that could serve for a FF1 dungeon?".
hella good review man
What are the specs of your rig and exactly what kind of performance are you getting? I have a gaming laptop and a PS4 Slim and I usually prefer gaming on my laptop. It's got specs that are decent enough and definitely stronger than the PS4 Slim but I've heard a lot of bad things about the PC port for Stranger of Paradise. I'm playing the FFVII Remake just fine on my gaming laptop at 1080p, for example. Would you suggest the PC version in this case or get the PS4 version instead?
@@aninfinitemindofmusicandreams I'd suggest just getting the PS4 version, the PC version literally just isn't optimized properly and can only be fixed by the devs updating the game, even the best 3080s struggle to mantain a constant 50

@@CatBitchNami great gameplay, if you enjoy a game that looks like early ps3 graphics, running at 10 frames per second every time you do a finisher, and can't find multiplayer matches because NO ONE IS PLAYING IT. lol

I knew that you would love this game from the moment it was revealed at E3. It really captures that 'Early PS3' aesthetic that you spoke about in some of your previous videos and how people will, or are starting to, become nostalgic for it. The fact people love this game just on the basis of it hitting that sweet spot just shows you were correct. It doesnt hurt the game is actually fun to play as well. I ended up putting Elden Ring down for a solid week cause Stranger of Paradise completely engrossed me, I adore it on every level aesthetically and gameplay-ly and the story ended up being surprisingly great. As an action game guy who played it on Action difficulty can confirm that even on the higher levels the gameplay has tons of sauce, love the Breaker class and its op zantetsuken move. I did the same. I managed to beat Elden Ring before it came out and was ready to fly through NG+ and this game has stolen my attention ever since launch.
Arguably my favorite ARPG combat system ever, good tunes, and a plot that dumps 90% of itself into the last 20% and still manages to be immensely satisfying? Yeah, that's GOTY. Alongside Kirby at least.

Not people who just... you know... play games.)
If people dislike Stranger of Paradise they should just say why rather than revert immediately to graphics, is what I'm getting at 😂
Never seen it as a PS3 game tbh. That said I'm also confused by the "looks like a PS3 game" criticism too. That was one of the best generations of games

I think you’re sold me on this game, it looks great and I love the Final Fantasy 9 callbacks as well.

Props for using Nine Wood Hills theme, that song hits so god damn hard.
I absolutely love Masashi Hamauzu's compositional style though.

I think Hideo has more self-awareness than many people give him credit for, since his memetic public image is probably crafted and curated.
does thor have a tracklist for his videos cause the song at 28:20 goes HARD
Can't wait for there to be a shit-ton of Jack Chaos cosplays at conventions just running into each other and getting into a edge party.
This is great. Good non-joke April Fools content.
Funny how FF went from "Destiny is Destiny" To "IDGAF WHO YOU ARE, GIVE ME CHAOS!!!" In like the span of about 9 years.
Nice touch with the audio-filter on the meme man from Dark Souls. 10/10!!
a more important angle to the whole "writers who don't know what they're doing so lol" vs the "writers know exactly what they're doing" intent of storytelling- and it's often, tellingly, foreign storytelling that gets painted as the former- is that, in videogames, there are way too many people involved for someone to truly have a Tommy Wiseux style weird accident.
Thanks for cracking open my skull with nanobreaker

Dude it’s already there in my opinion.
