Hell yeah. I also finally played through this game recently and it was a wild ride. I ended up having a lot of fun with it despite the jank, or possibly because of it, but I might be predisposed to enjoy that kind of weird sonic thing lol

I played it for the first time within the past year, too. I don't consider myself a "Sonic fan", and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Honestly, there is a sort of gratification from learning the jank. Theres a mastery to understanding how to control the characters, and when to avoid touching the controls to not die (lmao). Additionally, exploiting the broken physics and systems to skip parts of stages makes you feel like youre outsmarting the game sometimes, which is always fun as hell.

funny anecdote: my friend (at the time of release) HATED 06 because he thought Sega killed off Sonic. He played up to the point where Sonic is "killed" (before they bring him back with the emeralds) and immediately ejected the game. He refused to play anything sonic-related for years because of that, lmao

Back at release one of my college friends, the weird dude that was well meaning and generally a bro despite the absolute weirdness, picked this up and got super into it. This was before the internet memes and the like, being only like a week old at the time, so I had a solid time watching him jank his way through it. Yeah it clearly had it's issues but my man was loving it so much I got caught up in it and spent an evening or two very engaged with the entire thing. Very much one of my top memories of that generation of gaming.
My take on this game is that it was the Jesus of the 6th Gen. It showcased all the skung and jank possible with the new technology and gave pointers for game studios to avoid its faults in future games. I really don’t miss 6th Gen load times

Speaking as a person that likes smells in bottles, what its called (cologne, eau de toilette, eau de parfum, perfume) refers to the concentration of "smelly essence" in the product. Cologne is lowest, like up to 4%. And perfume is the highest, I think. 20 to 30%.

Liquid sonic
As someone who ate the Sonic Curry before, your review is spot on. It actually tastes like your average Japanese curry, but you ended up with some kind of "mineral" after taste. It is both pleasant and revolting at the same time
Me and my partner were discussing Sonic (as all couples should) and came to the conclusion that even when Sonic is terrible, it's passionate. There are so many creative things in '06, and they were clearly trying to make something interesting, but had the resources swept out from under them. Sonic's never bad because they weren't trying, if anything it has the opposite problem, Sonic doesn't play it safe, and often winds up shooting itself in the face as a result, but I can't knock the passion.
Sonic Forces is the one exception to this rule I feel, it's the one Sonic game I walked away from like "What were they trying to achieve here?" It felt like they wanted to lean into the Sonic OC culture with the character creator, but then forgot they had to actually make a game around it.
For me 2000's edgy Sonic will always be more enjoyable and memorable than whatever 2010's meme/meta/cringe Sonic was trying to be.
unfortunately the new open world game does seem quite safe as a concept if your ask me. but i agree with your sentiment especially for the past games

I think you finally managed to answer a question I've had for years but never had any ability to answer to know how to ask; "What is it about Sonic The Hedgehog that appeals to so many teenagers and young adults on the spectrum?" (I mean this quite honestly, not in a veiled insult way). And I think you hit the nail on the head. Sonic is "Safe rebellion". It presents itself as BOTH edgy and safe. And i think for this appeals to teenagers as a whole, but especially those who may not enjoy media that is openly anti-establishment or confronting.

Like, every game in the Sonic franchise has it's loyal fans, from the original classics, to the more obscure but beloved handheld games, to the weird 'dark age' of Sonic, and even Sonic Boom and Forces. It's so wild. *Someone* always has *something* good to say about a Sonic game, even when everyone else hates it.
Someone always has something good to say about anything, it's not just Sonic. With Sonic it's more that there are multiple communities of fans with contradictory tastes who often don't get along with each other.

I really appreciate how willing you are to engage with whatever dumb bullshit is in a game at it's level, and you never go for low blows or cheap laughs at the expense of the source material like so many other internet video game commentators do, and you also never engage in bullshit shallow ass cynicism and pretend you're above any of the stupid bullshit in some of these games either. It's refreshing and nice to see somebody appreciate a game for what it is instead of making fun of it for being what it is or wishing it was something else. It's great, and there's hardly any voices like that on this platform that I've been able to find.

And your description of the yellow the stank from the perfume is great. I could picture it. It's sink water that you've been soaking your bowl in, to get the Sonic Blue out, and your dish soap was lemon scented. And the yellow of the dish soap has had some of the curry bleed into it.

You only touched on it briefly but my friends and I spent days of our lives playing Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, perhaps the greatest mini game of all time.
To me this game is undeniably shit but I really appreciate the vibe they were going for with it. The game just emanates that early 2000s feel good type shit.
Thank you so much for these takes, man. You talk about things that are hard to eloquently unpack about the weird cultural niches in the gaming world. It does seem to get to where there is this "meta" cool factor that's even harder to put into words than whatever the hell the idea of cool even is. Your exercises in really trying to suck all the marrow out of these old negatively and mixed reviewed games is refreshing and sort of puts a new lens on how I view the games I'm playing now. I often wonder what will be the next vibe we look back on. It's hard to really define that flavor until you look back while playing in the current gen. I really enjoy your takes on the PS3 era because that popped off during a time when I was kind of bouncing off of a lot of titles due to those more monochromatic color schemes and the developers really enjoying the new tech allowing them to recreate that psuedo edgy Hollywood action movie cinema style. I can look back at that time more fondly with help of some of your perceptions and this is just good shit. Your music is dope too. Cheers.
Spent a large part of my early childhood playing sonic1/2/3 and S&K on my sega in the early 90s. Didnt hang out with people...just sonic
It’s interesting how you mentioned the experience someone may have between watching the experience vs actually going through it cause I think a lot of it can also go against those who’d say they play 06 over other sonic titles like Forces or Lost World. Almost everyone that seems to say it always talk about the funny glitches, design, and story that’s just filled with mid 2000s edge and romance, while my experience with the game was getting stuck at mach speed sections, remembering to save in fear of doing shit all over again and not wanting to do that, and probably due to me playing on the PS3 version, there was a recurring bug where the game wouldn’t load levels…unless I took the disc of the game out which left me playing the game but without the one good thing this game has to offer, its music. I definitely understand why people would prefer to play this over similarly controversial sonic games, especially since I am also a hipster contrarian who’ll go “black knight was really fun and I liked it” or “Would rather play Shadow despite still not playing it cause I think it looks cool”, so I accepted the fact that people will genuinely think this way about 06, but apart of me definitely has a growing disgust for those towards any positivity towards 06 as someone who really wanted to play it and was excited only to end up frustrated with it in the end and even more so now that it’s the game people use to describe sonic’s legacy and life as a franchise.

22:19 this is kinda how I feel about most games in this series. Even the good games don't get given the time of day because it's popular among internet funny men to grossly exaggerate a game's flaws for easy laughs. I wish more people would give Unleashed or Adventure 2 an honest chance, instead of basing their misinformed opinions on what they've heard from people who quite clearly have no invested interest in the franchise or character.
Interesting that people hate on unleashed and SA2. I think unleashed was great, it refined the janky on rails sonic stages into something smoother and more interactive, SA 2 is let down by the boring overly simple shooting and treasure hunt sections, but it at least has that deep chao mode. Sonic 06 is just too janky/dumb for me though.
I think what colors the opinion of 06 is how old you were when you first played it. If you were really young I could see how you could overlook the poor design and just enjoy that sunny atmosphere sega is so good at making ( even though I don't like 06 I can't deny that the music is amazing). You may even come to love the jankiness in time, but I don't think it's like what Thor is insinuating, that people will actively seek out recreating this jankiness, at least not in the unironic sense. Most of the current sonic inspired 3d games, like project rascal, look to make a more sophisticated version of Sonic's gameplay.
SA2 and Unleashed are pretty much one of the most beloved games in the franchise though?

What this game really needed was more time in the oven; I remember playing it with a friend years ago, and thinking had the developers ironed out the glitches, some weird physics, and a couple technical issues, it wouldn’t have been as hated as it was upon release (the romance plot is a different story). Also, that soundtrack is phenomenal
Also one of the project leads ran off with half the game's budget to make Sonic and the Secret Rings (which is in many ways an even worse game).
With this game the phrase "if you put the time in, it'll put you to the test" is very apt.
I will admit that Sonic R is not a very good game, but the way people act like it's so hard or unplayable is very confusing to me. I had it on the PC. It was the first game I ever 100%ed and I did so at the ripe old age of 9 with a keyboard. It's really not that hard or janky.

The smell you were describing is closer to a bright sky blue. The real ocean, salty and everything, is like a really soft gray-pink, and that fake ocean smell is a bright, vaugely orange, pink

This is why I come to your channel. You take what is arguably one of the most extensive AAA fuckups agreed upon by the gaming community at large, and you frame it in a way that makes it endearing even though I just watched you accidentally launch yourself off a straight road 40 times. You manage to look at and APPRECIATE games for what they are, even if what they are is a barely-held-together pile of unfinished code that no one QA tested. It’s a welcome change from the angry-for-comedy’s-sake reviewers.

I love this game. Really glad to see whoever grew up with it/ time passing to warm up to and appreciate the good things about. We haven’t had a good 3D sonic since Generations. I think with Forces and Lost World and the mediocrity, people have come to appreciate the ambition of 06
I just liked the super speed sections in the Sonic missions.
There should be a game dedicated to that specific tone of gameplay. Arguably... that's how it's SUPPOSED TO BE. I think the Sonic series is greatly held back because it tries to be reinventive like Mario instead of embracing its own identity which is supposed be about spunk and speed.
Aside from first cutscene looking like Final Fantasy, Sega and the Sonic Team were good at replicating Square-Enix's habit of hiring actors from 90s and 00s TV shows and movies. Remember when Square/Leon was voiced by David Boreanaz or Ansem voiced by Billy Zane? Sonic '06 had Lacey Chabert as Elise. Even her Japanese voice actor was Maaya Sakamoto, who voiced characters in big major RPGs like Panzer Dragoon Saga and Final Fantasy XIII.

As someone who played it for the first time last year, I would personally say its biggest issue is that it's not Sonic '07 or perhaps even Sonic '08. I honestly expected it to be far, far worse than it is. I can see why some fans put it above the likes of Forces, Secret Rings or Boom.
There are many things wrong with it (especially the mach speed sections), but you can occasionally feel that there's a pretty fun platformer buried in there, mostly during Sonic's story. At the very worst, it's a great "so bad, it's good" game, which is more than I can say about something like Balan's Wonderworld.

Honestly the Silver ball segment perfectly explains the true PS1 Tomb Raider experience. Try to do a hard puzzle with pixel perfect accuracy and jank controls, fuck up half because you made a mistake and the game jank fucks you and then back tracking ten years or loading a save that's way older than you want it to be. Good memories

I loved this game when it came out, although it partially also might be the general lack of games I had.
I think there's a particular way to play Silver (basically, hold down the button to catch objects all of the time to catch enemy missiles and go at a slower pace), it was my favourite section. A lot because you rarely get thrown into random pits because of the slower pace. I agree with the awful ball section though
Secret Rings exists. If you don't like motion controls use Dolphin emulator to remap them. Sure, it's more restrictive than 06, but it's the same basic idea. Advance 2 is also the same but in 2D.
To further your thesis that sonic reflects whatever is trendy at the time, Twilight came out the same year as sonic unleashed.
