I remember Memphis Blues. 1981 and 82 I think. I marched snare with Spirit of Atlanta in 1980 and we played a show in Memphis. That's when Jim Ott died on tour in the wreck and we played exhibition that night. Also saw Memphis Blues on tour when I instructed with Southwind in 1981 & 82 after marching in Atlanta.
      Good times.

@@DennisJohnsonDrummer yes Memphis 80, 81, 82 and I marched 83 multi-tenors as did Erick, the year we folded after DCI South in Birmingham. I hear members stories of the emotional run you guys made that night. I've also seen video of that performance. Memphis was following in Spirits foot steps by setting new highest score for 1st year corps like Spirit did it's first year. Then Tennessee passed a law banning Bingo which whipped out most of our funding. I was so dismayed I never marched corps again and I retired from teaching a few years ago. Erick went to the Cavaliers and marched snare in 84, aged out there and has written for their front ensemble to this day. I wouldn't trade my drum corps experience for anything. Definitely good times!

What I think would be a great idea? When the 2 teams playing each other only have 🥁 drum lines, the traveling team should bring their 🥁 drum line along. During halftime they should have a "THROW DOWN" on the 50 yard line. 👍🤓♥️

Former Dline member. The line is run by 2 guys, one of which who used to march Teal Sound back in the day. From my understanding, the Dline was one of the first drum lines (if not the first) in the NFL. While cleanliness is certainly a goal of the line, this sometimes gets lost in the “show” aspect of jamming out in front of thousands of people who couldn’t care less how many notes we rammed into 4 bars. Great line; better memories. The directors are cool guys with a passion for the sport. (Both football and marching percussion.)

Hey Eric, my name is Justin. I was a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Buc Beat Line. The video shown was from our first season as a line and they have just completed their second season ever, so that is why there aren’t many videos/info on the line yet. They normally host auditions in June/July for the upcoming seasons.

    Eric....
The drum lines in the NFL are not competing on a level playing field. Some of the variables are: sustainable funding sources, organizational structures: volunteer, professional audition, full time instruction, governance and equipment purchases-maintenance-storage, relationship with the front office and game-day support-recognition, access to professional development and sustainable-highly effective Human Resources (ex.: Local drum corps, universities, large urban community with several professional music venues, etc.), cognitive unified vision of goals and processes by members, leadership and candidate members.
I love what you’re doing: your membership in the “Commandant’s Own”, dedication and advocacy to all quality drumming activities, your education and teaching background, your exemplary talent, creativity and “chops”...!! I’m a huge fan and wish you continued success in all things.
Retired music educator, judge, pro player (percussion), public school administrator and Consulting Firm CEO....!

Funny bit. The Redskins band is the reasons the Cowboys exist. Their band leader was fired and to get back at their owner, blackmailed him because he owned the rights team’s fight song. He then sold them to the original owner of Dallas. Redskins owner then had to vote Dallas into the league as he was the only one who hadn’t voted “yay,” and then he got the rights back.

so the skol line is my home line. before the rankings even started i knew they would be at the top. maybe not #1 but high up. The line started with MPA instructors and other top players in the area. I was in high school line at the time and a few people i knew from around the state were on the line. I believe 3 instructors from my line made the cut? Ever since they were created they would train and create their routines on the level of dci and wgi. I had a couple instructors playing on that level as well. To make a line like that you had to be the best in the area to even think about having a chance. I wish i knew more insider things but I unfortunately didnt keep up on everything they did over the years outside of knowing who was on it. but thank you for putting them at the top. If you would like to do any sort of cover on the line message me and i can link you to the guy who was either on or coaching it early or would at least get you in touch with the right person to do a documentary style thing on them.
