Logical Cowboy: Don’t know what you do for a living but I hope you work in media. You would be excellent working for NFL Films or the Cowboys. You have the perspective that so many don’t which is how to explain things in context. There’s ppl out there making content portray subjects like Joe Montana for his stats without understanding how the games were played. Same with the early to mid 1980s Cowboys. Ppl don’t seem to realize that when games were already won in the 4th quarter that they weren’t throwing 50 yard bombs, they were burning clock. The 1970s Cowboys were 2 Super Bowl losses to the Steelers away from being the team of the 70s. With Danny White they were SB contenders for 3 straight seasons with one of those being a strike year. You capture everything & explain it to fans like it happened within the context of what was happening in the NFL at the time. On top of that you’re teaching ppl how the game was played during those eras. You really have a talent for explaining & teaching what things were like during those eras.
I was born in the 70s but too young to remember watching the games during that decade. So I came of age as a sports fan in the 1980s. The first game I can remember watching as it happened was the loss against the Niners in the NFC Championship game. Every win felt like champagne and caviar and every loss felt like ashes and despair. And I remember believing in the team right up through the loss to Minnesota on Thanksgiving Day in 1987. It was that game where I realized they were going to miss the playoff two years in a row and that I couldn't blame it on Danny White being out with an injury for half the season. It was probably in that game that I realized he was never going to be the quarterback he had been before that injury the year before in New York. That was the last year for Dorsett with the team, the last year that Tony Hill was a starter, the last year that Danny started any games, the last year that Landry had a chance to take the team to the playoffs. I guess you could say that was the year the team I was growing up with died and the team that Jimmy built for a few years in the 90s was a great team and I loved them but it was never quite the same as it was when I was a teenager watching them play at my grandmother's house on a Sunday afternoon.
Wow, that's the path I took, becoming a die hard cowboys fan, I watch them play as a youngster a few games, the prior season before the catch, but the year the cowboy's lost to the 49ers on the Dwight Clark catch, I was 11years old, I cried after that lost, and that's when I became a die hard cowboys fan.
I fell in love with the Cowboys as a 10 year old boy in '65, watching "Dandy" Don Meredith throwing to "Bullet" Bob Hayes. God help me, I still love them. Thanks
I remember every single one of these moments the shame of it is that Danny White is so underappreciated he took them to three straight NFC championship games and at one point had a record of something like 24-2 In Texas stadium.
This video has brought back a lot of memories. I recall playing football in high school when a good friend of mine who was also a huge Cowboys’ fan and I would line up for wind sprints, and would do the famous Dallas OL stand up and go down in the three point stance, which pissed off our coach. Good memories.

Another great video LC!! Lots of highlight reel footage on this one. TD's 99 yard NFL record scamper for the longest run from scrimmage ever. Too Tall batting a Phil Simms pass into the air, and into the arms of Jim Jeffcoat for a pick 6. That actually happened twice, I think the other team may have been the Rams. I have the Simms INT on VHS tape. Many of Danny White's exploits with the offense, and the always dominant Doomsday II defense with Randy, Harvey, Everson, Dennis, etc. Some great memories for sure. I didn't get to see my Boys play live though until Opening Day in 89. Aikman's rookie season, at New Orleans against the Saints. My seat was in the end zone area where Aikman threw a TD pass to Irvin. It got called back for offensive holding, then a sack or two and we didn't even get a FG out of it. Final score 28-0 Saints. The Saints fans were buying me sympathy beers in the spirit of the party!!!

I was 16. I couldn't believe it when it happened. Then on the ensuing drive, Drew Pearson almost broke away, Danny White got sacked, and it was all over. To this day I still avoid watching Dwight Clark's catch. Couldn't stand Joe Montana and Bill Walsh for years after that either lol.
I remember everything you talked about. I also remember the Cowboys doing a song called "I don't want to be home for Christmas" in the mid 70s when they were about to miss the playoffs.
I'm 50 from Boston and Pats fan. But my grandfather was a big cowboys fan and this was the conversation in the winter of 81 during the NFC title game vs Philadelphia. He said " Bryan this America's Team - it's God's team - it's your grandfather's team and now it's your team " Well it was !! From 81-86 I loved my Cowboys !! As time went and things began to improve for the Patriots and decline for the Cowboys my allegiance went to 2 teams to exclusively the Pats come 86. But 5 years is a long time when your a kid and those 5 years as a cowboys fan still means the world to me !!! I have so much late 70's early 80's Cowboys stuff. And if I could get just 1 game back it wouldn't be any of the Patriots heartbreaks but actually the NFC title game vs the Niners. If I could get any game back it would be that January night in 82 :(
Great post bro! If I wasn't a Cowboys fan ( which is insane for me to think about not being a Cowboys fan!) I probably would be a Patriot fan. I'm a huge fan of Tom Brady and Bill Billicheck. Again great post.
I certainly do remember the 80s and the Cowboys during the decade. I graduated high school in 1982, so some of the best times of my life were during the 80s. Remembering the Cowboys during that decade is bittersweet. Success in the early part, though losing the three straight NFC Championships was tough. It got even tougher as the 80s wore on with the decline of the team in the late 80s, but at least that lead to some great 90s teams. Thanks for bringing back the memories LC, another great video!
What a great video going down memory lane! Very good commentary and research! You definitely mention some very memorable and some not so memorable moments that only true Dallas Cowboys fans would remember. I truly miss the 1980s.
Good stuff the early 80s with white healthy before wrist injury The cowboys played showed up and beat many good teams. I make the point all the time if dorsett doesn’t get a concussion that catch game ends in a dallas win. Thanks for the video and the trip down memory lane!
One thing that never changed was the paint fading from Texas Stadium roof, the wet spots around the stadium, and mold growing from the top of the roof from theinside. Being crazy to sit by the entrances and feeling the cold biting wind during the cold games. Trying to get through Loop 12 and it being backed up with traffic. It STILL IS filled with traffic even with the new design. Finding a place far enough to park but still being able to get out on time. I went home by 121.
The early 80s , when I fell in love with the NFL. Nothing better on a Sunday afternoon than watching the NFL Today on CBS and listening to Brent Musberger open with “ You are looking live at..” . The live shot would be from stadiums around the league and the matchups for the day. Calling my grandad if my Redskins won and dodging the phone call from him if the Cowboys won. Great post and thanks for the memories.
This is a great video! I see a lot of people on this thread are a lot like myself...Born in the '70s and raised in the '80s watching football. They were such good times! Thank you for posting!
Memories of my childhood. Every year was exciting but ended in disappointment. Jeffcoat and Bates stood the test of time though and made contributions during the Johnson and Jones era!
Danny was so damn good and deserved to win a SB , part of me died that day in candlestick park, fuck the catch ! Danny hit drew Pearson after that for what would’ve been the game winning TD if it hadn’t been for Eric Wrights horse collar tackle (which would’ve been illegal now)
I was stationed at Ft. Ord, CA in the 1980's and would drive most Saturday nights to Victorville, CA to my parents' house just to watch the Dallas Cowboys play on Sundays, my 4 brother's with there families and my family, also my two sisters with their families and of course Mom and Dad, a super Jam-Packed house, with the grill going and plenty of brewski's to go, and all the Cowboys players you mention relive in my mind remembering those days, were just good times, Doug Cosbie, now there's a name I haven't heard in very long time, when the Cowboys lost, it was a long drive back to Ft. Ord, when they Won, it was a short drive back, funny how that happens. Thanks LC for the memories. THE SARGE
My favourite moment was Herschels game winning TD on opening night against the Giants in 1986. I just knew the Cowboys were going to win the SB. Shame we didn't even make the playoffs that year, but the memories are treasures nonetheless. Great you mentioned writing letters to players because as I said before Herschel actually replied...yes after a few months but hey im a Brit. Eugene the Hitting Machine does not get the respect he deserves, neither did people like Downs, Walls and Danny White. Outside Cowboy circles anyway.
What nobody seems to ever remember from that year is that Dallas has the second best offense in the NFL that year until Danny White went out for the season with a wrist injury in week 9 against the Giants. The team was 6-2 going into that game and was competing for the division and playoff berth. With Steve Pelleur under center they would only win one more time that year. And what was worse is Danny was never able to throw with accuracy downfield again after that.
@ashleighelizabeth5916 Every word true. I believe the OL was poor and we were missing one really good outside linebacker, but the loss of someone who was an elite passer was the biggest factor to what happened in the second half of the season. Danny's biggest sin for many people was not being called Roger. As you said, in 86 we saw what he brought to the team by his absence.
LC, glad to hear your back! I was beginning to get concerned, this weekend i was going to try and contact you through RUclips info confirming perhaps you were on vacation. Although I became a fan in 1970 the 1980's cowboys were exciting but also frustrating "darn Steelers". From Super bowls to a lot of amazing talent on the field, it was great a time. I enjoyed the video a lot, and have a wonderful blessed weekend 🙏.
its like being 12 again. sitting in my room watch a 12in black and white tv with rabbit ears watching monday night football right after ripley's believe it or not. lol.. 12 an 33 are the best numbers in football. thank you for the great videos. do you remember when football was real? i gave up on watching in the early 2000's
Man I basically remember all those highlights, especially the game my cowboys was down 23 to 3 to Washington at halftime and my friend was laughing, thinking the game was over, and he had to be home because it was a school night, but my boys came back and pulled it out, I couldn't wait to get to school to get him back for laughing, thinking the game was over . Those was days teasing each other, when I team lose. Oh Dandy Don ,turn out the lights, the party's over.
@@thelogicalcowboy oh yes! Saw him every year! Doing his whistling and cheering on the Cowboys! Those early games were hot! Particularly the end zone seats where the sun baked. Ray had his little towel and never missed a beat! Even before the eighties Dad and I always got there early for warm ups. We were sitting in the end zone the St. Louis FB Jim Otis repped out about 50 finger tipped pushups! I had to go home and try it! Got to see Hollywood Henderson take a reverse handoff on a kickoff and ran all the way down the sideline for a TD! I was amazed! My Dad played college and got a try out with the Bears in the early fifties ( didn’t make the team) as a D lineman so he always commented on Jethro Pugh, Bob Lilly and Larry Cole telling me how strong and talented they were! You know, there was never talk of money back then just good ole buttoned up football! Glad I got to see it! LC YOU ARE THE BEST SIR! We all have a debt of gratitude for your hard work and content!
If the horse collar rule was in place back in the early 80's. Dallas could have won the NFC championship after Clark caught "the catch". White hit Drew Pearson and he was off to the end zone and would have scored if not for the horse collar tackle by the 49er's player.
This may be one of your best videos. The script is amazing! The perspective, the poetry, the sentimentality: great writing. Thanks for reminding me of how meaningful my teenage years were. That was a special time to grow up in and being a Cowboys fan was the best!
I was born in the 80’s but didn’t really get into following football, or any sports, until the mid 90’s. I’ve definitely done quite a bit of reading up on the team & players from the 60’s-80’s though. One thing that I still find crazy is how few people know that the previous owner, Bright, made firing Landry a condition for the new owner to agree to. Jerry is the only one who agreed to do it, because he was already planning to bring in his own guy, which is why the team was sold to him despite the fact that he didn’t have the highest bid.
I'm 54 now and I remember this era well. These teams were older than they were in the 70s but they weren't over the hill - yet. These teams still had a shot at winning the Super Bowl every year. Well at least from 1980-83. I think the Fall of Saigon moment happened on December 11, 1983. That was the game at Texas Stadium against Washington. I still think Dallas was the better team up to that game. After that it wasn't the same. I still say that if Danny White had been the starter for every game in 1984 the team would have gone 11-5 and made the playoffs. And if they had beaten the Vikings on Thanksgiving in 1987 Dallas would have made the playoffs and the Vikings would have stayed home. Both of those would have changed perceptions. But things went the way they did and the franchise fell hard. But that fall ended up bringing about the second Golden Age of Cowboys football.
It was the decade I remember because I was growing up in the 80s I went to high school and remembered the team being sold to Jerry Jones which was the beginning of Jimmy's cowboys. It was an interesting time for sure now it seems like a faint memory at 55.
LC: You ARE the MAN!! Another great video. I really enjoyed that. 👍 It kills me that the Cowboys lost three consecutive NFC title games (1980-82). I don't know if Dallas would have beaten the Raiders in SB 15, but I'm damn sure they would have beaten the Bengals and Dolphins in Super Bowls 16 and 17 respectively. What do you think?
For the team to have been on the decline, the Cowboys during the 1980s did get to 3 consecutive championship games, which is far more successful than the 21st century Cowboys that have yet to play in one.
My first conscious memories of watching NFL games are from the 80s. While I don't like how long they'd often go without showing the score, and I like being able to instantly glance at it today, I think graphics have gone too far. The early 90s maybe had the sweet spot. Give me a simple, static, little permanent score box tucked away unobtrusively somewhere. I don't like excessive, constantly moving graphics and miss the old, pre scroll days where you could just watch the actual game with minimal distraction.
Great video. Things definitely different then… my son was at a soccer camp this week right by RFK stadium and that building seriously needs to be torn down but what memories. Me and my dad are Washington fans and my stepbrother and sister are Cowboy fans. I took a picture and we all reminisced…
@@thelogicalcowboy likewise. I think most of us fans on either side would like to see the rivalry the way it used to be. We’ve been a clown show for a long time although should slowly get better. Whilst Jerry needs to get a real GM - but in a very real sense he’s been great for the league wonderful business acumen.
Good video man. I was alive but too young to remember a lot of this. I like it better though. More class, less division……society is just going down a bad path since internet and social media in my opinion. And yes, I realize the irony of me leaving a comment on RUclips as contradicting myself. I’m just saying, we are not going in the right direction and I fear it will get worse.
@@thelogicalcowboyI do remember crazy ray lol. I didn’t know he worked with the media and did those interviews like you said here. I just thought he was an ultra cowboys fan that dressed funny. I remember him being in the local news when he died. I thought that was nice that they dedicated a segment to him. And I’m glad he made it to see the 90’s dynasty.
I'm 64 and lived in Irving Texas in the 60s through 90s I went to more games than I can remember for 3 seasons in the 70s I sold concessions in the stands for preseason through playoffs fun times for a young teenager selling popcorn and watching Rodger and the boys and my dad had season tickets until Jerry bought the team
I remember all this only thing is I had to wait for the results if I didn’t see them on tv I actually witnessed them fall after those 3 nfc chip losses in a row
No other Dallas Cowboys content creator on RUclips doing it like this. Half of them just regurgitate each other's "Breaking News"and the other half just clickbait😂
First game N Texas Stadium was 1984 vs Redskins... Cowboys led 21-06 at at the half. Darrel Green got a pick 6 early N 3rd qtr and the Skins got Dallas 30-28.. Amazing game... After I remember the Redskins players and coaches running N2 the tunnel with their helmets on and Coaches had clipboards over their heads as the Cowboys fans were pelting them with ANYTHING they could get their hands on🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 ---- the 1981 Dolphins game vs Shula was WILD!!!! It was Landrys first victory over Shula since Super Bowl 6, and would be his final victory over Shula... the 1985 game vs the Steelers when Landry beat Chuck Noll was the first time Landry had beat Noll and the Steelers since 1972 and Tony Dorsett had a phenomenal game that day... would be Landrys final win over Noll as well.... The 1982 Playoff win over Green Bay was Landrys final Playoff win of his career and it was made all the sweeter seeing the LEGENDARY Bart Starr coaching the Packers on the sidelines..... The opening Monday night gama vs Redskins N RFK Stadium--- the GREAT Al Michaels said was his FAVORITE Monday night game he ever watched -- Al was NOT N the booth for the game..... the 1986 opening Monday night game vs the Giants was awesome!!! That 86' Giants team was one of the greatest SINGLE SEASON teams I've ever seen..... Landry having the BALLS to come back on the field N the Sunday night game vs the Rams N Anaheim when security came and got him after the death threat.... The 1987 Monday night game vs the Giants was another memorable game Jim Jeffcoat got a pick 6 on Phil Simms.... Beating the Raiders N Oakland N 1980 was a great game... so many great games, so many GREAT MEMORIES----- Especially those early 80's.... even some of the losses were pure CLASSICS.... The 1983 Sunday Night game vs Radiers was crazy game when Chris Bahr kicked the game winner N the last seconds... the Monday night game N Miami when Marino hit Mark Clayton on a 63 yrd TD N the last minute and Dallas would not go to Playoffs for first time N a decade... getting SMOKED by the Rams on a Monday night N December 1980, after the Rams ended Staubach career the yr b4 N the 1979 Playoff game N Texas Stadium--- then 13 days later with the score tied 13-13 at the half---- Dallas RAN WILD N the 2nd half against the Rams.... Dallas ran for 338 yrds that game and the Boys got revenge from the Playoff loss the yr b4 and the butt whooping the Rams put on them 13 days later---- Yep, the 1980' and ESPECIALLY the early 1980's were absolutely MAGICAL for this ol Cowboys fan--- as ALWAYS, thanks fir the trip down memory lane 🍺🍺🏈
Thanks brother 🍺🍺🏈 one that I had meant to mentin that just came to mind was the 1980 game vs 49ers at Texas Stadium.... It wasn't a great game or anything, but it was memorable because of the final score and it was Landrys final win over the 49ers and Bill Walsh.... Dallas was up 59-7 N the 4th qtr and finished 59-14.... and the 9ers reciever who caught that last score of the game was none other than Dwight Clark😳😬 Dallas forced 10 turnovers that game.... TEN..... keep those videos coming.... us OLD-SCHOOL Cowboys fans sure do appreciate them
God damn sure do I was a great times and some sad times Danny White should I think should have had two super bowl trophies has the starting quarterback what if Tom Landry and Danny White won two Superbowl together would Landry been fired like was and would fans give props Danny White and would he be in a pro football hall of fame and cowboys Ring of Honor
@logicalcowboy the Dallas Cowboys began to slowly die after Super Bowl XIIi, they were sick in the 1981-82 Championship game against the 49ers, on life support after the 1985 season and once Tom Landry was fired and died once Texas Stadium was demolished. Tom Landry was a religious man. Texas Stadium was Blessed. Yes Jerry Jones won three Super Bowls but that was Texas Stadium, the house that Schramm and Landry built. Yes, Jerry claims that he made a deal with the devil and maybe just maybe that’s the problem. He made a deal with the wrong individual. In either case Texas Stadium was a source and now that source is gone.
@williamhughey6875 Time is not progressive. Time is repetitive. On the east coast, it's 5:30 pm. Tomorrow and until Christ returns it will still be 5:30 pm around this time of day. Time will never go beyond the scope of where it is now. Time will repeat itself consistently no matter the day or year.
Dallas & Chicago met for the first game overseas in 86. How bout when Dallas rebounded in 86 only to have Danny Whites wrist injury start the unraveling of success in late 80’s. Sherrard’s injury lead to Dallas going after the Playmaker.
As a Gen Xer who who grew up in the 80’s No matter who you rooted for, if your Sundays didn’t include Pat Summerall and John Madden and Dick Enberg and Merlin Olsen, you got cheated. It all seems so innocent now. Players were larger than life and there was still an air of mystery because without the internet and social media, you had to scour TV, the newspaper and Sports Illustrated. I knew the players were paid, but I thought the did it for us. Because who the hell wouldn’t want to be an NFL player? It all seemed so pure. It was still a game and today it’s all about $$$.

Good stuff the early 80s with white healthy before wrist injury The cowboys played showed up and beat many good teams. I make the point all the time if dorsett doesn’t get a concussion that catch game ends in a dallas win. Thanks for the video and the trip down memory lane!
I agree. That's a good point. Preinjury White was up there with the best of them.

And the INCORRECT Danny White fumble call.

Lockhart was a monster! An absolute beast. The guy doesn't get enough credit.
@@thelogicalcowboy Not from topps either. They didn't bother to include him in the card collections until 88

If the horse collar rule was in place back in the early 80's. Dallas could have won the NFC championship after Clark caught "the catch". White hit Drew Pearson and he was off to the end zone and would have scored if not for the horse collar tackle by the 49er's player.

Yes,I recall the Cowboys of the 80s. Too bad they were not as good as the 70s

It kills me that the Cowboys lost three consecutive NFC title games (1980-82). I don't know if Dallas would have beaten the Raiders in SB 15, but I'm damn sure they would have beaten the Bengals and Dolphins in Super Bowls 16 and 17 respectively.
What do you think?
I completely agree! The Bengals were good but no way could they do anything against that doomsday defense.
The 1980s Cowboys didn’t even have a losing season until 1986. Laundry’s first since 1964.
