    Tom Landry had the patience to keep Waters on the team because he most likely would have been cut after the 1972 NFC Championship as Charlie Taylor of the Redskins was torching him. Even Charlie Waters said in an interview that he didn't have the speed for a corner and like Landry was a better safety. Once he made the switch to safety, he made the defense even better.

Charlie is still third in career interceptions for the Cowboys (behind Mel Renfro and Everson Walls) after being retired over forty years and is #9 in most post season appearances. the fact he is not in ROH is a disrespectful travesty. I attended Clemson starting in '68 and Charlie was our QB. Those years were Frank Howard's final years and those teams were bad. I liked Waters as a QB but was not surprised that he got drafted in a different position. I'm sure all Clemson alumni were so very proud of Waters' success at Dallas. In those days, Clemson did not have very many players to be drafted, so it was great for those few.

  • @christianstough6337
    @christianstough6337 Месяц назад +3

    Waters is amazing. I may be mistaken, but I believe the first choice at FS that year was Richmond Flowers. I'm not 100% on the sequence but. I think it went Flowers for 3 games, Harris for 5, then Waters for 6. Flowers either was injured or didn't measure up or both, opening the door for Harris. I really love how you highlight that 1970 was a makeover year for the secondary. Imagine, one of the top teams in the NFL in 1969 and it completely makes over its secondary (and O-line) the following year. Every starter was in a new position in the backfield. Add to that the effort they went to, to add new talent, with 5 draft picks, a big FA rookie, and a major trade. What they got short term was their best secondary ever (IMO). What they got long term were two awesome safety's and a fair CB in Mark Washington. What they didn't get, and never really did get, was a shut down corner like Renfro. Aaron Kyle came the closest, but not getting another Renfro was one of the major reasons Dallas' defenses began to ebb after 1978. Back to Waters, his big play ability was just insane. Th epics, the blocked kicks, the fumbler recoveries- just a remarkable nose of the ball. But I think his biggest contribution to the team form '75 on was just how respected he was by the players on that defense. respected of this hustle, his grit and more than anything, his brains.

    When I saw the thumbnail I thought his journey to greatness might involve a haircut. ; ) Charlie Waters is one of the most thoughtful players in NFL history. He was the one who coined nicknames for his teammates like "Manster". He was the shaper of narratives, many of which we've heard that persist to this day. He lifted up the reputations of his team, but from I can tell has been humble about his own underrated legacy. This was an awesome deep dive into his story. Thank you for this video!

    I did it. I evaluated every draft pick from 1967-1988 using AV. Which means I can give an average for every draft pick in the draft and evaluate trades not by who was picked, but by the value of the draft pick. I can also evaluate drafts based on expected AV versus actual AV acquired. I can also evaluate who did a better job of accumulating picks for the draft. Was Ralph Neely really worth a 1st rounder, a second rounder, and two 5th rounders (beyond the fact that the trade was needed to resolve a dispute between Houston and Dallas and therefor crucial to the merger). The answer is yes. Those draft picks had a combined expected value of 77.9 AV (a huge AV sum), but Ralph Neely produced 113 AV for Dallas, so Dallas came out on top by 35.1 AV in the trade. We really should share email.

    I still remember the Cowboys playing the Rams the season that John Hadl was QB and they had traded for Harold Jackson. Hadl threw one of his old Sid Gillman plays at Waters at CB, and Jackson scored on a 60-yard TD pass. Jackson went on to get another 3 TD receptions after that. I think Landry moved Waters to safety shortly after that game. Waters was a good, hard-nosed player, but was a much better NFL safety than an NFL corner. The man was the real deal in that era of the league, despite a tough game against Jackson.

    Cliff Harris and Charlie Waters were awesome at safety for the 70s Cowboys. Both could REALLY hit, Harris was probably a better player. Charlie was a fierce hitter, but Cliff Harris was an even more lethal when "laying the wood". Charlie finally started playing along side of Harris and his insticts back there were great. He was always breaking up and even intercepting passes. I was too young to remember Watters at corner, but I doubt he had the speed to play CB. (I honestly can't believe they played him there) GREAT SAFETY, never should have been at corner. As a safety, he made big plays, weather it was a key interception or a big hit. He played both free and strong safety, but he was better around the line of scrimmage. I personally dont think he's a H.o.Fer, but he's close. I think you have to be GREAT to be in the HoF, its not the Hall of very good.

    Waters was WAY too slow to play cornerback. Luckily he was extremely smart in football. Second best studies on defense. Cliff Harrison was even more extreme. They said Harris and Waters would know the defense tendencies for every down and situation in the opponents last game. Harris would then go back and look at games further back in the season. The Cowboys were almost always in the top of the NFL in pass defense and against the run. Man I miss the way football use to be -laced.
