Is there a Simpsons episode that plays with an individual character's emotions more than “Bart Gets Famous” does with Bart's? He goes from happy about a field trip to sad about the box factory, happy about working in show business to sad about Krusty being a bad boss, happy about becoming famous to sad about being a catchphrase machine, happy about making people happy to sad about now not being able to make anyone laugh. Poor Bart. :(

I've got better. Once, we went to the dump. On the other hand, we also went to the zoo and Tiri Tiri Matangi (a nature reserve island). Middle school yielded Kelly Tarltons' (part aquarium, part penguin reserve, part exploration of the South Pole race), Rainbows' End (the only amusement park in New Zealand) and several art galleries (but we got to go around the shops during the lunch break!).
I've always been curious to see your thoughts on Bart's Inner Child, since, to me at least, it's an episode I've liked more and more the more times I've watched it. The Trambampoline is a fun opening set piece that sets up a lot of fun jokes (even if it has nothing to do with the rest of the episode), the Brad Goodman seminar is an entertaining scene both due to how many funny character moments there are (Italian Moe, Positive Flanders, Mr. Burns' "I'm too nice", it's crazy how many home runs they hit in this scene), and due to how apparent they make it that Brad Goodman has no idea what he's talking about. It really fits with Springfield's general "pack mentality", where one strong influence can affect the entire town. The festival scene is also really funny. There's a lot of unique character pairings and interactions (Like the Sea Captain snapping Patty and Selma and Skinner's altercation with Moe), and Marge's stupid overalls and backwords cap outfit always puts a smile on my face. When I first watched Bart's Inner Child, I remember not thinking much of it, but it seems like every time I rewatch it, there's something great I hadn't noticed the previous time. Comparatively, Bart Gets Famous strikes me as being a bit more linear and predictable, with its jokes and story beats kind of being lined up by its basic plot. Bart's Inner Child definitely strikes a higher bar with me because of how much more unique its plot and jokes are. Great video as always, happy to see your thoughts on the episode, even if they're not necessarily the same as mine.
The only thing that I don't like about your Simpsons videos is the fact that I've watched them all and now I have nothing more to watch until you upload more. I grew up with the Simpsons and I love your videos. You're bringing back a lot of good memories and giving me a new way to look at some of my old favorites. Keep up the good work.
It's really just a battle of first half vs second half. Barts inner child has a much better second half and ending. Bart gets famous has one of the best beginnings but loses itself like you mentioned. They are both pretty equal. It depends on whether you are looking for more of a storyline or just more comedy. Barts inner child has the former, Bart gets famous has the latter.
I do find interest in how Bart's Inner Child tries to do THREE little character arcs, almost all revolved around defining traits about the main cast; Homer paying the price for his impulsive antics (again), Marge realising how much of a stick-in-the-mud the others view her, and Bart having an identity crisis from no longer having anything to rebel against. Bart has an identity crisis in Bart Gets Famous as well, but it's not as tied to his defining characteristics (that's kind of the point but just saying). I kinda feel like Season Five was this point where the writers worried Marge and Lisa were too sanctimonious, they got undermined and made the butt of jokes way more often from that point onward, with more times Homer or Bart got to be the 'sane guys' for once. I feel like this was a good and bad thing because it also meant it was kind of the era when Lisa's pomposity took over her character, she acts like a curmudgeonly old woman in both of these episodes, I don't think early Lisa would have been quite so contemptuous of Bart's rise to fame, she might have even been childishly jealous of it.
Back when I used to watch the show on late afternoon/early evening reruns, I remember watching "Bart's Inner Child" many many times. It was a great classic episode. It's pacing may have been a bit slow after the trampoline segment, but that still felt like classic Simpson's pacing, which allowed the show's storyline to develop organically rather than keep jumping to a new segment or hit us over the head with repeat jokes (see Simpson's and Family Guy episodes from mid 00's onwards). "Bart Gets Famous", for whatever reason, wasn't shown on reruns very often. In fact, my friends and I noted how rarely we saw this episode. But whenever we mentioned it, it was never the "I didn't do it" catchphrase episode, but rather the "box factory" episode. The first segment was so great that it overshadowed the second act, even though the second act was a meta segment that parodied the Bart-man phenomenon a few years before.
Bart Gets Famous is honestly one of my top three episodes from season 5 along with Cape Feare and Rosebud. I just love it when The Simpsons goes meta about itself (the Poochie episode is one of my all time favourites for the same reason). It's really fun to see Bart going through all the phases of undeserved fame while the whole thing works as a commentary on the catchphrase-focused Bartmania phenomenon. I guess it's a pretty simple story but the execution is perfect and the jokes and gags are all great. The box factory sequence is comedy gold throughout, and 7:49 could be my favourite shot of the entire series (I know it has been memed to death but whatever). Bart's Inner Child is pretty great too, but more uneven. The trampoline stuff is almost as fun as the box factory, Albert Brooks is always a reliable guest star, and the analysis of Bart's identity as a character is fascinating (Lisa's conversations with Bart feel like the most "intellectual" thing in season 5), but the parts don't really fit together in a smooth way. The trampoline plot has nothing to do with the rest, the Brad Goodman part does indeed drag a bit (at least in the middle of this fast-paced season), and the chaotic climax where everything falls apart and the other characters chase Bart and Homer feels like something from the later seasons. I still like it a lot, but it's definitely the less great of these two episodes. (Also, this is among the most entertaining Simpsons Showdown videos so far. Such a perfect pair of episodes to compare, and funny jokes from your part too.)
It's interesting that two of your top three are Season 4 holdovers. Rosebud feels more Season 4 to me while Cape Feare feels like it predicted everything that was great about Season 5.
@@strawberrysoulforever8336 Two of my top three? Rosebud is not a season 4 holdover, it was the first episode produced under David Mirkin. Based on the production codes, the two holdover episodes on season 5 are Cape Feare and Homer's Barbershop Quartet.
@@tarvinneekomainitakaan Oops, my bad. But that said, Rosebud still gives me Season 4 vibes and Cape Feare still feels like an early indication of where Season 5 was headed.
It was great to see one of these again. Haven't seen a new Simpsons Showdown since the one you did a little over a year ago with Homerpalooza vs The Homer They Fall.
Bart gets Famous is amazing! That episode always feels like a wonderful journey! It’s a fantastic joke machine. The episode is very entertaining. Also Krusty does such a good job in this episode. He’s the character who really sells it for me. However I also like Bart’s inner child. I’m happy to rewatch that story anytime. It certainly does use certain characters better! Great video! I definitely appreciate both episodes!
The moment where the camera pans away from the trampoline to show how many kids were injured, only for it to just keep going and for there to be exponentially more and more kids lying in pain is hands down my favorite visual gag on the show.
both of these episodes are classics, easily deserve to be in the top 25 episodes of all the Simpsons. I do think Bart Gets Famous is slightly better in some ways but I think the funniest scene (Skinner acting out his anger on his mom with a doll and then happening to sit back next to her) is one of the funniest scenes in all of The Simpsons.
The fact bart gets famous for a random unrelated throwaway line is really apt and funny, especially in the 21st century where loads of people become famous for really trivial reasons
I love this series. Have you considered doing a showdown between similar premise episodes but for different characters? Like a Bart-Marge episode vs a Lisa-Homer one?
Speaking of how well BGF uses secondary characters. It uses Bumblebee Man so well. The mousetrap bit is already great but bringing him back to overthrow Kent is so funny.
I would've paired A Fish Called Selma with Black Widower, as they're both about Selma getting married. I certainly think A Fish Called Selma would win, but Black Widower has a lot going for it. I guess one is trying to be a bit darker and mysterious, while the other has more heart and takes its time more. Early Golden Age vs late Golden Age, perhaps? I do get the feeling A Fish Called Selma dived more into the human nature of everyone, while Black Widower was more interested in building up atmosphere and I don't know for sure, but they'd decided to make this an ongoing plot, so they might have been adding a bit more incentive for Cape Feare (although they probably didn't know the episode was going to be a Cape Fear homage until later).
Bart's Inner Child is an episode that I honestly forgot about until rewatching the series a few years back. I recognized Brad Goodman more for being in that giant group picture used on so much 2000s Simpsons merch.
in the season 1 episode where krusty gets framed by sideshow bob, it was established that krusty used the phrase "I didn't do it". and now when bart says it, its a huge running gag? what are supposed to pretend a wizard made the writers forget?
Honestly I think this one is a no brainer. Nothing against Inner Child, but Barr Gets Famous has “You’ll have to speak up, I’m wearing a towel” and “My son is a box! A BOX DAMN YOU!!!” It’s a win by default.
I love Bart Inner's Child just for the trampoline segment. One of the funniest segments in the show's history IMO. Homer is SO funny in it when he's trying to get rid of it xD
I just rediscovered your channel today, glad to see that not only are you still doing 60 second reviews, but that you've branched out into other areas, which bring me to the reason I'm commenting. I thought of two other ideas for showdowns, all of them Homer-centric episodes. "Homer the Vigilante" vs "The Computer Wore Menace Shoes" have to do with Homer exacting his own justice. Whereas "Homer vs Lisa and the Eighth Commandment" and "Homer vs the Eighteenth Amendment" not only both involve him breaking the law, but have a catchy titling scheme. There doesn't seem to be any way to contact you, such as a Patreon or other form of social media, so here you go.
Love your work fam keep it up. I saw someone else suggest that you do a video on how the style of humor changes over time in the Simpsons. Also what other shows are you a fan of? I'm sure there's plenty more Simpsons content for you to make but I'd love to see your take on Futurama or really any show that you have an interest in.
Bart's inner child has a collection of my favourite jokes of all time. "Trampampoline!" Etc Millhouse complaining that Homer's soiled mattress cave smells funny, and Homer's cheery but deadpan "no it doesn't". Especially in the context of it being in Homer's imagination. Just doubles me over. Bart calling himself Ruddiger, and Brad Goodman just going along with it. "WE LIKE ROY!" "This ferris wheel wasn't double bolted!" For its jokes, I prefer Bart's inner child. For the story, I prefer Bart gets famous.
Before watching this, I remembered the trampoline but for some reason remembered it as a whole episode, and only vaguely remembered the rest of it. Whereas Bart gets Famous stands out pretty clearly
Be like the boy adds more relevance to the "catchy" catchphrase boom from network televison from that era. No disrespect to the Box Factory. That rocks!
I agree with you, i prefer the famous one. Perhaps because of Krusty vs relatively unknown-to-me character. I'd love to see a character history on Apu, but they are all great. Keep up the good work.
Bart Gets Famous I love how Bart's Inner Child taps into that Merkin-era mob mentality, but overall Bart Gets Famous is more focused. While I'm ultimately fine w/ Inner Child shifting its story perspective partway through, Gets Famous knows what story it's telling and sticks to it from beginning to end. It's a brilliant satire of the Simpsons Mania that dominated the early-90s (surpassing Treehouse of Horror 2's own take on it). A plot that utilizes the hysteria of the town are a dime a dozen (a shiny dime, granted), but great self-aware plots like this were rarer in those single-digit seasons. This also demonstrates why The Simpsons have been able to persist past 1993 when multiple people left for bigger and better things: It wasn't content w/ doing the same thing over and over. It was willing to twist things around and take some risks, though at the same time it knew what to repeat (as evidenced by the catch-phrase ending). And despite all this meta-ness, as you stated, it's never too overbearing. It feels organic to the story being told and would still be an interesting story w/o that extra layer, though it certainly wouldn't be the same w/o it. I am in absolute agreement on The Box Factory. The box factory is a wonderful bit of Oakley/Weinstein-style mundanity made amusing (they likely contributed to that part of this Schwartzwelder script). It's a perfect sequence, and it's a much more direct segue to the plot as an opening set piece. I hadn't considered how well-incorporated the secondary characters are here (Krusty included), but yeah. That's definitely a bonus. Also, Conan is the better guest on both an in-episode and meta level. Finally, I would argue that the quick resolution of Gets Famous feels very Groening. I mean that in how even when Bart finally gets on board w/ where life seems to be pushing him, life still turns against him.
too an extent I also feel that "Homer's Babershop Quartet" kinda satirises Simpsons Mania to, with the B-sharps having a hit with the song Baby on Board, only for the bands popularity to come crashing down after they receive their Grammy award and titling their second album "Bigger Than Jesus".
The thing about Groening and the ending does feel very true. I always think about that "Life in Hell" comic script about ways to die with the Success/Failure thing... The ending seems very much in that spirit.

That first act is like something right out of family guy in Bart's inner child
Love that quick flash of Dr. Phil sneaked in there.

„Class instead of going to box factory today, we’re going to.... box factory”
Notable best Krusty quote OF. ALL. TIME:
*raises shotgun* "You just keep right on driving."
The moment where the camera pans away from the trampoline to show how many kids were injured, only for it to just keep going and for there to be exponentially more and more kids lying in pain is hands down my favorite visual gag on the show.
The box factory can really inspire young minds
I have watched both episodes probably 50 times and yet I didn't see the depth you've laid out here. Great arguments.
I adore the vidya music so much!
both of these episodes are classics, easily deserve to be in the top 25 episodes of all the Simpsons. I do think Bart Gets Famous is slightly better in some ways but I think the funniest scene (Skinner acting out his anger on his mom with a doll and then happening to sit back next to her) is one of the funniest scenes in all of The Simpsons.
The funniest part of Bart’s inner child for me is Barts “eep” at the end when everyone chases him
The fact bart gets famous for a random unrelated throwaway line is really apt and funny, especially in the 21st century where loads of people become famous for really trivial reasons
I like your style of videos as they really hold up, saw one aprrently posted years ago but held up great, keep up the great work!
Being repetitive is Jim's job. Jim's job is to be repetitive. Jim's job is being repetitive.
Always cracks me up when the Dr Phil photo flashes by.
I love this series. Have you considered doing a showdown between similar premise episodes but for different characters? Like a Bart-Marge episode vs a Lisa-Homer one?
Seniors in the back

I binge watched your older videos today! Ayeee!
Speaking of how well BGF uses secondary characters. It uses Bumblebee Man so well. The mousetrap bit is already great but bringing him back to overthrow Kent is so funny.
These videos bring my life so much joy
The end of Bart Gets Famous has prolly my favorite Simpsons joke in it and also made me realize that Lisa doesn't really have a catchphrase.
Potential episode idea: Principal Charming vs A Fish Called Selma.
Good one!!!
Man, I love your channel.
The security guard at the studio gag is incredible as well. Love how he just totally accepts Barts confident answer that he works there.
Best way to sneak into someplace is to act like you belong there.
Your content is sooo good. Jazzed to watch this during lunch today.
Just recently started watching these, but I enjoyed you using 'Johnny's Got That Funk'. Love me some FF6, VGM, and remixes.
This is an excellent channel.
Bart's Inner Child is an episode that I honestly forgot about until rewatching the series a few years back. I recognized Brad Goodman more for being in that giant group picture used on so much 2000s Simpsons merch.
6:10 In the back of the bus in front of Nelson: is that the kid that taught Homer to play that boxing video game?
Idea for a showdown: 22 Short films About Springfield V Trilogy of Error. 2 episodes that have multiple stories converge into 1.
If we could all be more like little Rudiger, maybe we could learn to better appreciate this episode.
in the season 1 episode where krusty gets framed by sideshow bob, it was established that krusty used the phrase "I didn't do it". and now when bart says it, its a huge running gag?
what are supposed to pretend a wizard made the writers forget?
Boy, I really hope someone got fired for that blunder.
tell me, what is a grown man with a youtube account called "jamesplaysgames95" spend all of his time overanalyzing a primetime cartoon from the 90s?
We Like Roy and the entire Box factory bit are among my favorite gags and I cant decide which episode I like more.
Good choice on that X5 Credits remix. I think it'd fit as a general outro pretty well.
Honestly I think this one is a no brainer. Nothing against Inner Child, but Barr Gets Famous has “You’ll have to speak up, I’m wearing a towel”
and “My son is a box! A BOX DAMN YOU!!!”
It’s a win by default.
I love Bart Inner's Child just for the trampoline segment. One of the funniest segments in the show's history IMO. Homer is SO funny in it when he's trying to get rid of it xD
Bart gets famous is a great episode. Lots of great jokes in it throughout, and of course the box factory is great. Winner.
Your channel is awesome!!
I think I speak for all us old Simpsons fans when I say
"WE LIKE ROY!"
Instead of mindlessly browsing RUclips I will... Mindlessly browse RUclips!
It was driving me nuts how much the second song sounded like the MMX5 outro, until I realized it actually was
I just watch the James Brown clip, goddamnit. Now I gotta watch the blues Brothers again
If I was pulling random episodes out of a hat and picked either of these I would be equally happy I think.
I feel like you should do an episode of "is homer's enemy the best in the series?" it'd be a proper hard one
Two of my favourite Simpsons episodes
Love your work fam keep it up.
I saw someone else suggest that you do a video on how the style of humor changes over time in the Simpsons. Also what other shows are you a fan of? I'm sure there's plenty more Simpsons content for you to make but I'd love to see your take on Futurama or really any show that you have an interest in.
Bart's inner child has a collection of my favourite jokes of all time.
"Trampampoline!" Etc
Millhouse complaining that Homer's soiled mattress cave smells funny, and Homer's cheery but deadpan "no it doesn't". Especially in the context of it being in Homer's imagination. Just doubles me over.
Bart calling himself Ruddiger, and Brad Goodman just going along with it.
"WE LIKE ROY!"
"This ferris wheel wasn't double bolted!"
For its jokes, I prefer Bart's inner child. For the story, I prefer Bart gets famous.
Do a history on comic book guy?
Do Bart the Murderer vs The Boy Who Knew too Much.
Both are Bart-centric, both involve the courtroom and both also involve Skinner.
Before watching this, I remembered the trampoline but for some reason remembered it as a whole episode, and only vaguely remembered the rest of it. Whereas Bart gets Famous stands out pretty clearly
Ahh my favourite youtube channel, how about Marge Be Not Proud vs Bart the Mother, though i think i can guess the winner haha
You might say Bart would steal the victory away.
Or maybe he would absolutely kill it in this matchup.
(Pick whichever pun you prefer.)
I especially like the background music variation of "kiss from a rose" :D
Love the Dr. Phil potshot at 4:27!
I love Homer's what up Marge line in barts inner child
I tried listening to this video , but next time you'll have to speak up, I'm wearing a towel.
“Eat my shorts young man”
Be like the boy adds more relevance to the "catchy" catchphrase boom from network televison from that era. No disrespect to the Box Factory. That rocks!
Has anyone noticed or pointed out the Dr Phil picture at 4:28 for "a charlatan who claims to know all of the answers"?
ottoman and bumblebee man would be a good video.
4:27 Excellent!
that opening tune is gold
“I don’t know what kind of factory you’re thinking of. We just make boxes.”
Oh we don’t assemble them here. That’s done in Flint, Michigan.
I agree with you, i prefer the famous one. Perhaps because of Krusty vs relatively unknown-to-me character. I'd love to see a character history on Apu, but they are all great. Keep up the good work.
i remember one DOnald duck comic made direct rip of of the Bart Gets fmous. I think I still have that comic
I wrote a silly song about the Bart gets famous episode and called it Wasn't Me, now the episode has a special place in my heart
Bart Gets Famous
I love how Bart's Inner Child taps into that Merkin-era mob mentality, but overall Bart Gets Famous is more focused.
@@Super_Mario128 Though that one also has to share the stage w/ their Beatles satire. Definitely true, though.
The thing about Groening and the ending does feel very true. I always think about that "Life in Hell" comic script about ways to die with the Success/Failure thing... The ending seems very much in that spirit.
First guy dropped the ball. Trampoline story is glorious, easily on a par with box factory.
I see that you're a big fan of Dr. Phil.
