The Homer They Fall is the superior episode, it’s your classic underdog story, and that Punch Doctor joke gets me every time. I may be a bit biased since I’m a Punch-Out fan, but still, it’s an iconic episode.
Another good vid. I agree with your choice, although "The Homer They Fall" has one of my favorite obscure little moments -- Homer's nickname being "The Southern Dandy." Oh, and the "Kid Gruesome/Kid Moe" thing, too. But can i take a moment to defend the "Rover Hendrix" scene? (1.) Homer -- a human being -- is at a vet. Funny. (2.) The vet, beautifully played by Harry Shearer in full "joyless authoritarian" mode, gives him advice like, "Rest your beer on your head or your genitals." Also funny. (3.) Homer, ostensibly trying to be hip, tries to channel his teenage rebellious side and uses the most outdated slang possible. "Dyin' would be a stone groove!" Again, funny. (4.) But what of Rover Hendrix himself? Technically, in 1996, it would have been possible -- just barely -- for a dog purchased as a puppy by Jimi Hendrix to still be alive. That in itself is kind of amazing to consider, certainly worthy of 3 seconds of television time. The fact that Jimi named his dog the most cliched thing ever is also sort of funny, as is the fact that the dog looks so worn out. But what makes the joke work for me is that Homer's question to the doctor -- "Got any messages for Jimi Hendrix?" -- is purely rhetorical. He doesn't expect an answer. In fact, he stands there with a smug look on his face, basking in the awesome thing he just said. But he isn't allowed to enjoy this victory for even a second. The doctor has an immediate response to him, and it's deflating to Homer's sense of bravado. That's comedy.
Technically Jimi Hendrix's dog's name is a reference to his song "Fire" where he says "Move over Rover and let Jimi take over!" Just a fun rock and roll factoid :P
As always, it's a pleasure to see your reviews. I also prefer Homerpalooza, being one of my all time favourite episodes. I would like to add some ideas to yours. Homerpalooza is also about Homer's middle age crisis, being music the area where he starts feeling disconnected from "the cool" (being young). After Bart shouts at him at the very beginning and he goes to the music shop and doesn't recognize anything there, he starts to see how he has grown up. He even remembers the dialogue with his father being a teenager. It's interesting to see that Bart and Lisa here are put in the place of teenagers, clearly to make a parallel with homer's youth with his father, and since the Simpsons lack children in this stage of life (Lolo from Poochie could have been useful to this purpose). When he is choosen as a show himself, he feels "in" again due to the fact that cool young people are hanging out with him. When death is really near after the visit to the doctor, he chooses to accept his age and the things he has achieved. In contrast, the box episode, as you say, is about Moe and not Homer. I also dislike it because I find it sadder, since the episode seems to talk (as opposite with the other) about letting go and the good old times and missed opportunities.
I wasn't alive in 1996, but I get a kick out of Homerpalooza. It's more timeless than people give it credit for. "Making teenagers depressed is like shooting fish in a barrel" is a line I think about constantly.
I'd go with The Homer They Fall, mostly because it's a lot more memorable for me. When I think of Homerpalooza, I remember it in vague bits of the story: Homer starts a career of being shot with a cannon, but it starts damaging his health and he has to decide between safety and popularity. When I think of The Homer They Fall, I remember a lot more of the events that happens. I remember how Homer ends up starting boxing, I remember Moe's history, I remember why Moe eventually offers up Homer to fight Dredrick Tatum. I remember a lot more of the jokes, like Homer being exhausted after throwing a single punch, and Tatum stopping a prison riot by telling everyone to shut up. And honestly the moral quandary felt a lot more earned because of the character interactions.
I always knew these episodes had similar ideas but I never knew how close they were Season-wise. Really like the time perspective you put on the story sometimes
I thought Homerpalooza was pretty lame back when it first came out and I feel the same way today. The Homer They Fall, on the other hand, I saw after it first came out and I loved it--it was like finding buried treasure. To me it's the better episode.
I've got to disagree with you on this one. Not only is Homerpalooza one of my least favorite episodes from the classic era but The Homer They Fall is one of my very favorites. Kudos on use of the Punch Out music though.
when I first saw Homerpalooza back in the 90's I was around Bart's age,and had older Gen Xer cousins that actually behaved like that in the mid-late 90's.
I far prefer The Homer They Fall. Where I find Homerpalooza to have dated in much the same way "new Simpsons" episodes with very contemporary references do. It lacks the timelessness that really most early episodes have. Moreover, I really do find it gimmicky and lacking in much real substance or genuinely funny jokes. The Homer They Fall not only has more by way of genuine plot, it's also got one of the most memorable funny sequences of the season with Tatum's parole hearing, and on the whole I feel there's far more to keep watching for.
Homer interest matters...focusing on homer makes the earlier episode better ..moe is just not as engaging as homer when he has stakes on the line sorry ..and it helps that they seemed to use homerpalooza as a template for a very similar episode in the next season not even 5 episodes later ...they clealry had more time to work on it cause they had the idea during their summer break
This is the first time I guessed wrong about what you’d go with. Homerpalooza has the with it joke but that’s literally all it had going for it to me. The homer they fall is easily my favorite parody other than cape feare. The making orphans out of his children joke is great, but the line about imagining his wife would die of grief is to me the best quote in the whole show.
Yeah, lol. I also noticed how Drederick Tatum looked different when shown in earlier seasons (such as the fight in "Lisa vs 8th commandment") than he did later (such as "The Homer they fall"). I liked both episodes. I was in college during the mid 90s and the way that episode captured the party-goers at the palooza festival (such as 2:43) is so similar to how others my age were back then. That depressing grunge rock style, their clothes, expressions, they looked at the pessimistic dark side of things but enjoyed doing it and dancing to the beat of Smashing pumpkins, Nirvana, and Nine inch nails
"Homerpalooza" for me as well. "The Homer They Fall" loses points for its lazy, slapdash ending (Fan Man? Really?) -- a harbinger of seasons to come. At least Homerpalooza ends with a mildly funny/thoughtful conversation ("Maybe if you're truly cool, you don't need to be told you're cool." "Well, sure you do." "How else would you know?").
You kids dont know Grand Funk? The wild shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner? The bong rattling bass of Mel Schacher? The competent drumwork of Don Brewer? Oh man! Grand Funk Railroad paved the way for Jefferson Airplane, which cleared the way for Jefferson Starship. The stage was now set for The Alan Parsons Project, which I believe was some sort of hovercraft.
Yeah I agree with you on homerpalooza but then I have a soft spot for 90’s grunge and gen x teen references despite having been born 1991 and not really getting the jokes till later. I argue that the central message of homerpalooza, that times will change and that it’s best to just accept that someday what your with won’t be it anymore, is much more relatable to your average person. Ironically, the 90’s grunge almost adds to the message as the years go on, as the episode becomes more and more dated it only reaffirms it’s central message.
highly non-canon. And it beats your high school musical music, or your 6ix9ine music, or whatever you have anymore, all that stuff that doesn't matter or make history.
When Homerpalooza came out, I was teases because I had that outfit that the “crowd girl on the left” has: red tank top, flannel shirt tied on my waist and even though it’s 2021, my hair still looks like that.
Man oh man! I can't even remember a laugh out loud joke from Homerpalooza, but can immediately think of the surgical 2x4 joke. It's one of my faves. Interesting!
Would you do a Simpsons Showdown involving the Sideshow Bob episodes? Would love to a see a comparison between Black Widower, Cape Feare or Sideshow Bob Roberts.
Homerpalooza ftw ... The jokes are way better and it's nice to remember that, despite millions of comments by kids in youtube, the 90s were not a sunshine rollecoaster made of lollipops.
The Homer They Fall is the better one, it's a timeless episode that works whenever, it's about Homer and Moe just having fun, when you think back on what makes The Simpsons great, it's the fun that keeps you coming back, Homer boxing is enough but Moe being a former boxer is another piece of the puzzle of Moe, Redman on the Soundtrack with Why Can't We Be Friends while they enter the ring, Homer taking those hits make you feel like he might die without a doctor telling you like Homerpalooza, we get it cause the hits are brutal, I rarely go back to Homerpalooza compared to The Homer They Fall cause it is so 90's which I hate cause it's so much of a snapshot, I wasn't a fan of those bands back then and those teenagers are not funny on repeat, I'm gonna be honest, I like the action of The Homer They Fall, you made the wrong call cause Homerpalooza is what people hate so much about the Simpsons now, overblown guest stars barely adding to the plot, just saying one line and moving on, was there a reason for Sonic Youth and Peter Frampton and that pig in the grand scheme? No but Tatum going to murder Homer in the ring writes itself and makes for better canon because he can meet him again in the future and it may go south or they may be friends, can't do that with 90's now aged up Sonic Youth, Cypress Hill and Peter plus who cares these days as a young fan of Simpsons tuning in to keep it going along with the old fans, only repeat guest stars fans care about at this point is Jon Lovitz, Al Brooks(Scorpio), Danny Devito(Herbert Powell) and Michael Jackson(dead)
Homerpalooza is about much more than music, altough it's what someone would first notice in the surface. It's also about someone's (Homer's in this case) middle age crisis and how to cope with it. It's the episode where Homer struggles (through the trends in music) with the idea that he is no longer young but has lots of things to enjoy in his life.
@@RiC_David I see where I confused you, in the episode Tatum comes out to Redman - Time 4 Sum Aksion Followed by Homer with War - Why can't We be Friends All this is happening in the background, it blew my mind to hear Redman on the Simpsons back then and then immediately made me laugh seconds later hearing Homer's theme for fighting against the champ 😂😂😂
i think this might be one of the best youtube comments ive ever seen. I dont agree with everything you said however you hit the nail on the head multiples times. props
Homerpalooza is my favorite for sure. I’m from that generation that lived it, and I went to the festival it’s spoofed on three times. It is a very accurate depiction of what it was like. The other episode is still really funny. The parole hearing joke is one of my all-time series favorites.
Yeah, lol, it is. And I liked Grampa's "I used to be with it, but then they changed what 'it' was. Now what I'm with isn't it anymore and what's it now seems weird and scary, it happened to me, it'll happen to yoou"
I'm a millennial born in '86. So I was 10 when Homerpalooza came out. I "like" '90s music and all but I am much more of a fan of my parents music. Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Doobie Brothers, Kansas, etc. Though my parents like Metallica, and Corey Taylor. I still identify more with classic rock.
Well I’m personally going with Homer, they fall. It just feels like a more energetic story to me. Plus it has some really good jokes. Tatum is really funny in this episode. He’s usually not very funny but in this episode he is truly hilarious! I actually love the line about “Making Orphans out of Homer’s children!” I consider it dark humor! However I respect your opinion.
Homer's been knocked in the head so many times, in "The Homer they fall", and in "It's come to this, a Simpsons clip show" when there's an entire montage of Homer being knocked in the head before then (Maggie knocking him out with mallet, a chainsaw falls on his head in garage, an automatic door keeps shutting on his head, he falls down Springfield gorge twice, etc.). Anyways, it's a wonder how even with crayon removed from his brain, he becomes intelligent.
Fun Fact that very few people remember, that Fan man thing actually happened, though there he accidently interrupted a heavy weight championship match by crashing into the ring and the audience was so pissed they nearly beat him to death......what a joyful thing to homage ^^;
"Society put Drederick Tatum away for his brutal crime, but he's paid his debt, and now he's going to get revenge...on Homer Simpson" The Homer They Fall wins in my book for that joke alone. It's stuck with me for so long, the perfect TV gag. The first act of Homerpalooza is great, Homer driving the kids and him thinking back to his teenage years, realizing he isn't with "it". The gen X music stuff went over my head as a kid once the 2nd and 3rd acts get into full swing.
Every time I watch Homerpalooza I think, "Man! It's great to be part of GenX cuz we're the hip, young, cutting-edge generati... What's that? It's been HOW many years?! Son of a...!!!" But, I guess that would explain the bunions and achy back. :/
Wait, Homerpalooza is the episode where that "I used to be with it" scene is from? I was reminded of that clip not long ago, and I thought it was so on-the-nose with a concept that can be applied to every generation that it quickly became one of my favorite clips from classic Simpsons. Despite seeing this episode at least once, I forgot a lot about what was actually in it apparently... Like, I'm giving the edge to Homerpalooza just for that perfect clip.
I definitely feel like The Homer They Fall wins out here! (As cool as Homerpalooza is as being the time capsule episode for music in the 90s). In addition to good characterization- Homer They Fall has so many funny moments (Comic Book Guy returning the belt, Homer's Rocky fighter build up, Moe's fan montage, etc- Lucius Sweet/Drederick Tatum's characters in general steals the show)
I find The Homer They Fall more memorable and quotable. "We called that 'The Stinger'. They don't-- they don't let you use that no more." "I would imagine that she would die of grief." "That's your daddy." "All us angels wear Farah slacks." And Homer entering the ring to Why Can't We Be Friends. Plus, if it's a choice between a timeless episode and one that's dated, then I'm always gonna pick the timeless one.
I've always prefered the Homer they Fall, but that's probably just because I'm a boxer in real life and Rocky and Raging Bull are some of my favourite movies. Nice video! You might have a new subscriber.
I got Mark Farner's autograph at a Iowa gun convention thing that my dad was part of for his company when I was younger, I had no idea who he was but my dad told me he was the singer of Grand Funk Railroad, didn't understand until years later. Is he still alive? (Could check Google but prefer not to haha).
Homerpalooza was it for me. Partly because of the jokes and part of it is reliability/nostalgia for that point in time. And at least for the first group of millenials like me we can totally relate just like the Gen Xers. The only real difference was one group was listening to that music in college and one group in high school.
The Homer they fall is just straight up a better episode. The other one starts okay with Homer not realizing he’s not cool, but as soon as get to the concert stuff is became a boring as hell. The Homer they fall is both funny and heartfelt from start to finish and Tatum and Sweet were outstanding (really shocking they didn’t bring them back more).
I used to be with 'it', but then they changed what 'it' was. Now what I'm with isn't 'it' anymore and what's 'it' seems weird and scary. *_It'll happen to you!_*
Marge:"say weren't there three indians last year?"
That is just a classic line. I really can't think of any single line as perfect as that in The Homer They Fall, so yeah, Homerpalooza ftw.
I'm proud not to be with it.

Why are the kids in the 90’s so annoyed with Homer? He invented grunge for them! 🤣🤮
hahahahaha
@Maru Frusciante check out the nirvana episode
I think the name is that 90s show
highly non-canon. And it beats your high school musical music, or your 6ix9ine music, or whatever you have anymore, all that stuff that doesn't matter or make history.
I don't know why you're ragging on the Hit The Alligator and Run's cord, man. You're stealin my trailer! I like that
"I think you're cooool, The Homer They Fall"
"Sandra, that was mean"
I love Sonic Youth and I love their interpretation of the Simpsons theme.
I love Sonic Youth and that end credit music!
Would you do a Simpsons Showdown involving the Sideshow Bob episodes? Would love to a see a comparison between Black Widower, Cape Feare or Sideshow Bob Roberts.
Who’s gonna knock you down?
No one!
When are you gonna fight back?
Never!
What are you gonna do?
Nothing!
That has to be my favourite homer moment
The best fricking Simpsons related channel on RUclips - keep up the great work - always look forward to your videos!!!
Homerpalooza ftw ...
The jokes are way better and it's nice to remember that, despite millions of comments by kids in youtube, the 90s were not a sunshine rollecoaster made of lollipops.
As a boxing fan, The Homer They Fall is one of my favorite episodes. Absolutely love when he punches the fly
I always loved the headline “Champ to whale on local man”
Battle of the controversial episodes: 30 Minutes Over Tokyo vs Blame It On Lisa
How about...I Love Lisa vs. Lisa's Date With Density
I don't remember I single thing about Homerplalooza, but Homer They Fall, to me, is great. So Homer They Fall
"Dad, you cannot wear that!"
"That's a rastafarian hat."
"Pft. Hey, I've been safari-in since before you were born."
I'm confused by the "Redman" part, did he sample the song or something? Because it's from a 70s band named 'War'.
@@RiC_David I see where I confused you, in the episode Tatum comes out to Redman - Time 4 Sum Aksion
Followed by Homer with
War - Why can't We be Friends
All this is happening in the background, it blew my mind to hear Redman on the Simpsons back then and then immediately made me laugh seconds later hearing Homer's theme for fighting against the champ 😂😂😂
i think this might be one of the best youtube comments ive ever seen.
However I respect your opinion.
that piano remix of Mike Tyson's Punch Out password screen tho
Tremendous kudos to The Simpsons for that beautiful Flower Duet knock-off during the Raging Bull montage.
“Can’t you read? Call the police”. So glad you were able to fit that in.
i lost it at 4:58 when the Punch-Out music started. idk why, sudden Punch-Out piano arrangement is just hilarious to me.
4:44 A background character is wearing a Dr Zaius shirt
We have Homerpalooza to thank for Cypress Hill now actually performing with orchestras.
It is fun watching homer clash with youth culture, especially with the floating timeline stuff
I rewatched Homerpalooza last week and while watching it, I noticed it felt like it could be put into season 10 easily
Homer they fall had a much better emotional impact.
I’ve gotta go with boxing. There’s so many memorable jokes, like Kid Gruesome and the barbed-wire gloves.
Fun Fact that very few people remember, that Fan man thing actually happened, though there he accidently interrupted a heavy weight championship match by crashing into the ring and the audience was so pissed they nearly beat him to death......what a joyful thing to homage ^^;
I'm always so thrilled so see an upload from you! Nice work!
Sonic Youth is amazing man, WTH.
Victor Kruger Yes they are. And so is Asuka! What I will say tho is that I really don't consider Sonic Youth a 90's band.
@@southbeachtalent Daydream Nation, Evol, and Sister were all 80s, so I agree
@@crustpunkjesuschrist Yes, but 'Dirty' was so '90's.
@@Den.Vos.Reynaerde but I'm a bigger fan of those 80s albums
2:40: What’s funny is that earlier in the episode, Homer called “Sonic Youth” a no-name band.
"Society put Drederick Tatum away for his brutal crime,
but he's paid his debt, and now he's going to get revenge...on Homer Simpson"
The Homer They Fall wins in my book for that joke alone.
I always imagined that Moe used that fan while rescuing the kids on that island in the end of Das Bus.
I thought I had an appetite for destruction. When all I wanted was a club sandwich.
"That plus politics, you know, it's all politics."
Every time I watch Homerpalooza I think, "Man! It's great to be part of GenX cuz we're the hip, young, cutting-edge generati...
What's that? It's been HOW many years?! Son of a...!!!"
But, I guess that would explain the bunions and achy back. :/
The match between Homer and Tatum is more or less a parody of the Peter McNeeley & Tyson fight. That scene put me in a "cocoon of horror."
In addition to good characterization- Homer They Fall has so many funny moments (Comic Book Guy returning the belt, Homer's Rocky fighter build up, Moe's fan montage, etc- Lucius Sweet/Drederick Tatum's characters in general steals the show)
Moe's fan montage is the image of the Simpsons I remember in my head as a kid watching Simpsons, it just works even after all of these years
The moe fan gag is the moment the show jumped the shark but it is funny
I find The Homer They Fall more memorable and quotable. "We called that 'The Stinger'. They don't-- they don't let you use that no more." "I would imagine that she would die of grief." "That's your daddy." "All us angels wear Farah slacks." And Homer entering the ring to Why Can't We Be Friends.
Plus, if it's a choice between a timeless episode and one that's dated, then I'm always gonna pick the timeless one.
I love Homer and the Moe's gang episodes, and I like boxing. The Homer they fall wins to me.
Wow that Sonic 3 credits remix is great! I guess it’s on purpose since it’s a segment that includes Sonic Youth.
Then Homer boxing has punch out.
Thats cool you used punch out music for the boxing segment of the homer they fall.
Tatum's entrance makes me cry with laughter every time
Fun fact: In the Italian dub, The Homer They Fall is called "Raging Bull Homer"
this is the first time we haven't agreed! another brilliant video dude
I've always prefered the Homer they Fall, but that's probably just because I'm a boxer in real life and Rocky and Raging Bull are some of my favourite movies.
Nice video! You might have a new subscriber.
Nice piano punch out theme music for the homer they fall, there
An intriguing showdown could be who shot Mr burns part 1 Vs part 2
Wait, you guys haven’t heard of GRAND FUNK?
I got Mark Farner's autograph at a Iowa gun convention thing that my dad was part of for his company when I was younger, I had no idea who he was but my dad told me he was the singer of Grand Funk Railroad, didn't understand until years later. Is he still alive? (Could check Google but prefer not to haha).
As far as I'm aware he is still alive. Brilliant guitarist and performer, someone I really respect. You are one lucky guy!
Homerpalooza was it for me. Partly because of the jokes and part of it is reliability/nostalgia for that point in time. And at least for the first group of millenials like me we can totally relate just like the Gen Xers. The only real difference was one group was listening to that music in college and one group in high school.
9:18 So I DIDN'T hallucinate the talking shoes. They cut that out of the syndicated version and it messed with my head.
Yes yes, please make more of these
The Homer they fall is just straight up a better episode. The other one starts okay with Homer not realizing he’s not cool, but as soon as get to the concert stuff is became a boring as hell.
The Homer they fall is both funny and heartfelt from start to finish and Tatum and Sweet were outstanding (really shocking they didn’t bring them back more).
Punch-out music for the homer they fall, fitting
