I bought and compared both the 85" Bravia 9 and 83" LG G4 and kept the LG since I have a light controlled room. If it was a bright room there's no doubt I would have kept the Bravia 9. They're both equally as good but for different environments.

For me, I think the G4 can look as bright as the XR90 sometimes, while in dark scenes, the XR90 might preserve black but dim brightness, or look slightly washed in challenging ones. If you’re coming from a mini led tho, the XR90 is a great upgrade

I would go with the Bravia 9! Have a few OLED's and have not bought an LCD in 10 years, love LCD. I think the extra brightness will really pop and make it look 3d ish. Thanks Brian. After watching the video for about 15 minutes the G4 looks better. I know u need to see in person, and I have seen the Bravia 9 in person at bestbuy and couldn't tell it apart from the Bravia 7, they both looked the same. Bestbuy is a horrible place to experience a TV's picture quality, all the TVs are set in Viivid mode and are displaying content that no one actually watches.

It's important to know how to tweak the B9. Setting black level from 50 to 49 can make a big difference. The contrast increases a lot and doesn't shadow crush. Yet things get deeper. Especially in HDR like DV. It doesn't show a difference in some content. But when it does that 1 little step makes the contrast and depth a lot bigger.

    • @donnnnnnnn-ox9jb
      @donnnnnnnn-ox9jb 3 месяца назад +1

I've already lowered my brightness beyond 49 and I'm still very disappointed with the black level performance. I see a lot of blooming and brightness fluctuations in letterbox bars. I understand Sony does this in order to preserve shadow detail but on a TV of this price with this many local dimming zones it should not be happening. My Samsung Q8FN from 2018 has only 40 local dimming zones and letterbox bars stay inky black, they don't fluctuate at all. Has less blooming in general which is just insane. 7:20 This is a reason why I like the B9. Look at how vibrant it is, more nuance, more color. The gras is standing out. The vibrant light in the dark cloud showing so much detail. The G4 looks more monochrome and flat in the color and vibrancy. The blue on the left is stronger on the G4. But it loses in the other areas. Like the lit up grass, cloud and detail of the cloud.
But I also know there are scenes where the G4 looks more impactful. So it's trading blows.

They don't do that because you'd realize some of the cheaper models are actually pretty decent. Next time you go notice that they only show helpful content to judge quality on EXPENSIVE TVs... anything cheap or midrange they often don't even play a demo reel. For low-end or mid-range they'll play a crappy quality RUclips music videos from 2004 or a static image sometimes even. Upper mid-range TVs they *might* show a demo reel, but not always. High end TVs they show a demo reel or good content to judge quality.
Last time I went to Best Buy they had a Sony A95L playing a high quality demo reel, a Sony Bravia 7 playing a low-quality demo reel, and a Sony x90l playing a static image of relatively poor quality. It's designed to make you feel you're getting a SIGNIFICANTLY worse TV if you don't pick the most expensive models. When the truth is, there's alot of great TVs in the midrange and some decent ones in the low-range. Obviously high-end is the best! But Best Buy would rather have you thinking high-end is the ONLY option. I REALLY REALLLLLLLY hate shopping at Best Buy. They just made it so difficult 😩 I purchased a Costco membership JUST to buy a TV from them so I wouldn't have to deal with Best Buy's antics. It's really disappointing because if Best Buy was anything like Microcenter or the golden era when Fry's was a thing... I'd be there like every two days 🤣 I love spending way to much money at the tech store.

Nope, the QD OLED panels are coming out of black worse than LG. Maybe it is the compression of the video. HDR needs to be watched in a dark environment and there you see a lot more in the dark on the LG than on the QD OLED panels. The LCD is just lifting the blacks, which isn't accurate at all. You just don't see what is going on in those dark areas if you don't watch in a dark room, this is why a lot of people like the LED image, because the lifted dark areas are better seen. If you don't watch in an (almost) dark room, just get an LED and stop talking about image quality because all the constast is gone in bright rooms anyway...

I'm surprised how the G4 looks noticeably brighter in some scenes but I'm more surprised at how more rich the colors look on the G4. Blues and greens and browns were richer and brighter. @@makaiokalahama I had that dilemma and actually purchased the Bravia 9. But my G4 replacement has been working flawlessly and I cancelled the order. Five year panel warranty with 4 year Best Buy extended warranty, I am in peace. If you are looking for a brighter tv and don’t mind not having the true blacks, and that OLED crispness, Bravia 9 all the way. I did so much research and came to the conclusion I am better off with G4. I even considered going up to 77” but it’s too big for the wall. I never thought I would say, wish I had couple of inches less 😂. For that reason, I gave Bravia 9 more consideration and in the end decided to keep 65” G4. Brian was awesome answering my hypothetical questions on different videos.
      So here is my reasoning:
      LG G4 vs S95D
Yes QD OLED is more vibrant, but it is really noticeable when tvs are side by side, other than that, the colours on G4 are amazing. I got it professionally calibrated. Processor is better on G4. And my bias (I admit) , I don’t trust Samsung. Lastly, mat finish is not my cup of tea for an OLED.
      G4 vs Bravia 9
I cover that in my first part of this rant. G4 gets plenty bright to the point you almost think it’s a mini led. You still get that contrast of OLED TVs with G4.
G4 vs A95L I am not a gamer, occasionally I would play fifa, so A95 L would be a perfect TV for me, but it’s really negligible difference in picture quality that just doesn’t justify the price difference. You can literally get 77” g4 for the price of 65” A95L.
For me, G4 is a sweet spot of all the high end models.
Good luck to you, I know I spent hours deciding and watching all this content on RUclips.

Someone already mentioned here the image at around 3 min mark with dark cloudy skies, Sony looked way better; they were truly changing blows. I like G4s angle viewing better since at that price level I don’t believe I should loose any colour accuracy, but to call Sony or even Samsung a dud, or a bad tv it’s just ridicules. In comparison to other OLEDs, G4 offered 5 year warranty on the panel, that’s reassuring my purchase is better protected and gives me a piece of mind. Very bright for a OLED tv. If money was no object and I was shopping for the mini oled and plan to watch it from the front, no sides, I would pick Sony. In my case angle viewing was important, plus the better warranty, gaming, and deeper blacks, G4 is my choice. Sony 95L OLED was just too expensive.

@@sekai751 the key for me was contrast and brightness settings on high but Gamma all the way down. Don't turn up sharpness or reality creation too much at all or you'll get that block checkerboard movement (at least with streaming with the US wifi). I kept those around 65 anyway and it's been way better with that while maintaining clarity thanks to the XR clear processing. The noise or gradation I always keep low or off as it doesn't help the old content streaming much due to many reasons and it definitely ruins clarity and picture on new content. Color to your liking but expert 1 with live color on medium or high has been best for me. All my motion settings are smoothness 2 clearness 1 or 2 and cinemotion high. The Gamma at lowest and contrast at highest is key though then set everything else to your brightness you enjoy. There's a blackness setting too I mostly have just on low which is good enough with the contrast up. I'm honestly blown away by the little blooming I see ever while maintaining great contrast. It pops like a high end TV and it's not. You'll hopefully love it 🤙

I don't watch my Bravia 9 in professional. If I do I tweak the settings. Professional just holds back the TV IMO. It's too dim at times.
I tweak the settings for what I like instead.
I really like the TV a big upgrade from what I came from. It suits my needs and no TV is flawless. But I love that I don't see blooming in content, it gets plenty bright and HDR content is awesome.
Gaming has been great so far as well. Smooth VRR. Horizon Forbidden West looks amazing.
Sure I would love an OLED as well. But they have issues that would actually impact me. Like ASBL (PC user) and Burn in, which would happen for me. I wish those things would go away. I hope for an In-organic "O"LED in the future. Because OLED are awesome. But this Bravia 9 is awesome too. Because Sony processing, and how even though it's not an OLED. It can hold it's own. It's excellent even in dark room. Contrast and shadow detail is great. I prefer shadow detail over black crush etc.

Amazing video comparison. Thank you. I intend to get Sony Bravia 9 in the main hall (for family viewing) while I get LG G4 in my man cave/room.
The way LG G4 and Bravia 9 inteprets and displays the videos is so different, but in my untrained eye, it looks like videos displayed in G4 are more vivid. Most of the time, the images in G4 looks more "pop" and saturated in color, while the whites in Bravia 9 looks too bright at times (obsuring the details) (5:31 & 8:22). However, in certain dark scenes, the Bravia 9 captures more details than G4 (29:38 - 29:40).
The G4 whites seem to look bluish-white though (12:59 & 18:21). Is it normal? Which TV is more accurately representing the colors? It's like taking a picture with 2 smartphone brands but the picture outcome is completely different between the two.
I really can't decide which is better, but G4 colors (to me) do look more vivid, which is ideal for me (since I'm getting it for personal viewing.
I also worry the Bravia9 will have washed out colors for off-angle viewing since the 9 will be for family so some poor sap (probably me) will be forced to sit at the edge of the couch furthest away from the TV thus least optimal viewing angle. I also intend to get the Bravia Theatre Quad so that will go well with the 9 for whole family movie entertainment.
which mode are these 2 TV demo'ed in for this shootout? Is it Standard?
For Bravia 9 and G4, which mode looks the best (in your opinion)? I intend to play around with the modes in the beginning but mostly would 'set it and forget it' once I find the mode that looks the best to me.

Excellent video! You can clearly see the differences and headroom of each. This pushes me towards the g4 for a new bedroom tv. The blue is fantastic and vibrant in near every shot on the lg, where the b9...well, it is not so striking as I would expect from hdr color. Also, the reds in nearly every last shot are vibrant and actually red on the g4. The b9 barely does a single red well. Look at them and think red or orange. Instead, it is actually orangy to a dark red with brown. It's very odd considering it is well saturated bright content. The only color the b9 did particularly better was yellow and to a lesser degree orange. The lg has generally more vibrant greens and more detailed browns. Hmmm... with a non qoled, I expected the b9 to shine far more versus a woled. Yellow sunsets look amazing comparitively, like really amazing, but that is about it. Dang, those reds seem extremely weak on the b9. Love Jennifers content. It really shows deficiencies and advantages in bright saturated content.

I wonder if it would be possible to film each tv seperate with the same camera settings and then put together the capture in edit as I am not sure with the blue WOLED tint what actual comparisons can be be made accurately. Probably not much as far colours go.
But from this feed I am surprised anyone would call the G4 superior I mean come on guys I know there is bias, and I myself own 3 OLEDs (B7,CX,S95C) but this Sony in this video is the clearly better picture.
The oled has better fine detail but to the point I would argue is not lifelike whilst the Sony has so much better shadow detail.
There are scenes where you dont see 30% of the actual scene on the oled, whilst see some fine detail to the point that is not lifelike at all.
Moreover even though the specular highlights are brighter on the oleds I think it's bit unrealistic trick to fool the eye and overwhelm the viewer with a super contrastic image that for sure can be addictive.
I have started to wonder tough lately as the LCDs have started to be good enough form a contrast and screen uniformity point that OLEDs have kind of a gimmicky unnetural more real then actual real life picture that is meant to wow and impress but is not very lifelike.
I also feel oleds achieve their ultra hight contrast at the expense of colour and shadow detail. A white dot on a black paper is going to have more contrast then one that has actual greys and everything in the middle after all.
Even though my QD Oled can get super bright and I am sure the LG even more I feel like the super brightness is a forced gimmick to and extent whilst the Sony Bravia has and providea and effortles well lit likelike punchy image whilst being more then decent in contrast too.
Motion handling is also another issue I feel oleds are much more susceptible as the they have a instant response which results in an unnetural image which we try to eradicate with compromise semi soap opera solutions and find middle ground.
I definitely cheer and wish that Sony can build on this technology as I see a huge potential and would be amazing to have this picture quality in 98 and above inches which is a much closer financially feasable possibility.
Come on Sony let's see a 98 inch ,X90L successor with this tech 🙏

Your S95C is UTTER Better than Bravia9 or G4 way ahead. In my opinion.
Anything over 65” tv stretched OUT. Only takes Density/highlight to make image 3D,, NOT black. Especially 75” 85”….its all about Color density to creat the --Transition shades of SAME color in small pockets 🥮🥟🍡🥬🪼🪲🦞🐦‍🔥🔮🧿
your S95C so hard to Beat. prob at this point ONLY U9N or UX.

Yeah like the issue with laser tv……large but 2D. Because once get bright. It --looks Flat . Due to LOW COLOR VOLUME
The exact same reason OLED were focus on 40” 50” 55” longest time. Beccause it can GET away from low color.
Now pass 65” once get to 75”to be honest Mini LED n S95C are d BEST. G4 just too thin color. If I watch olympics swimming its just gonna look thin color flat.

Have a 65 inch G4 and absolutely love it. Would probably have gone for the Bravia 9 if they sold the 65 in Ireland but no. It's a reverse on last year when the x95l was only sold in 83 inch model in the US. Also have the x95l 65 and that's a monster also. Would love you to do a comparison of the x95l and the Bravia 9 Brian. Pretty pleaae

i'm planning on getting my first oled tv. split between the 65 s90d (s95 might have dropouts) and the 65 g4. sony just costs too much. it would be mostly for dvd/blueray, over the air sports, and maybe some games as i plan on getting a 240hz oled monitor for gaming instead. when i checked them out in the store, they looked the same but demos only show so much. lg supposedly has better image processing for low bit/quality content but would it be worth the $1k more?

How aggressive is the ABL on the G4? I currently have a C9, after almost 5yrs of owning it I'm starting to get annoyed by having to constantly worry if a show or movie is supposed to be as dim as it gets or if it's the ABL. Most times it's the ABL and I gotta bring up the home menu to get it back to regular brightness.
So, seriously considering the B9 but I'm afraid I'll miss the OLED, I switch back and forth from ISF Expert Bright & Dark room picture settings. Thanks for the video!

The ABL is nearly none existent on the G4. It was definitely an issue on older oleds even the C8, C9 and CX. I think you'd definitely miss the micro contrast. Thank you for watching

Hi Brian, I always follow your channel and the Fomo channel, but I have no comment because your work is wonderful, and for this reason I admire you with one letter. Sony is a masterpiece in 2023. Sony worked on an OLED and QLED screen together, and the result was the Sony A 95L, the best TV last year and even this year. In this year, Sony moved to LCD MINI LED screens, and now we see its result in the list of the best TVs. I also admire the work of LG G4, but in some pictures I see that it has a white color that is not completely effective, as if it is a light blue color, unlike Sony.

@hassancharif9384 excellent comment, and thank you for your support of both Fomo and I. SONY prides itself each year on choosing the technologies that serve their version and are not stuck to one technology. The blue you see on the G4 is simply the way it's captured by the camera and doesn't appear that way in person. Or when it's filmed alone. Excellent comment, and thank you again for your support and for saying hello.

At least in the latter part of the video, the color temperature of the two looks different, with the Sony warmer / LG cooler. I more often preferred the Bravia 9, with the LG being a bit too blue in some scenes. Could it be the way the camera captured things more than an actual difference in person?

    Hello Brian,
Looking at A95L, Bravia 9, LG G4, s95D. I watched the vids you did during the shootout. Seems people tend to discount minLEDS because of the shootout results. For me though, I think the Bravia 9 might be the best TV for my use case although my wife wants the a95l because it won. She thinks that miniLEDS are bad next to OLEDS since they didn't score well in the shootout. I'd like to get your opinion on my use case to see if I am missing something or misunderstanding something about mini LEDS
    1) Main viewing would be movies/shows. gaming and live sports is secondary I'd say about 70-75% : 25-30% ratio. My gaming is done on an Xbox series X.
    2) The room is a very bright room (sunroom), with the sunset coming through the windows aimed at the TV.
    3) Size- I'd be looking for a TV in the 80+" range. My wife said "go big or go home". That pretty much leaves The Bravia 9 or LG G4 in these sizes.
    4) Viewing angles- I don't feel is a concern as it is only my wife and I. Being that it is a large TV on the wall that is about 9ft away from our couch, the love seat on the side still lies within 30 degrees viewing angle for any guest sitting there.
    5) Cost- I'm from Canada and the 83" LG G4 at Best Buy is $8000 while the 85" Bravia 9 is $6500. That is $1500 plus tax difference totalling $1695. So it would cost me almost $1700 less for a slightly larger flagship TV.
These are my reasons for leaning to a mini LED Bravia 9. Do they make sense? Or did I get something wrong in my reasons?
    regards!
