I’ve seen music journalists criticising his vocals on this track, which I found utterly ridiculous. Thanks for explaining why they’re so good. His voice has definitely gone lower in the intervening 7 years since the last album, but I think it’s in a really good place right now and sounds fantastic - especially with this new material.
It’s so nice to see appreciation for this song instead of the people listening once then bashing them for being different. I absolutely love this song!
Those vocals were unbelievable, the control, that deep grit in his voice after a softer lead up. Chris, love the way you walk us through it. Using your voice (also amazing) to let us fully hear all the voice control. Now I’ll go and find their music 👍

The tone of his voice is definitely different. Can't say if it's better or worse... just different... It doesn't matter, A7X is still my fav band and he's still one of the greatest singers out there
I think it's lower in the mix, too, so it's not standing out as much as it usually does. But also, 7 years has gone by and voices do get deeper as people age. It still sounds like him, though.
M. Shadows was my first proper vocal inspiration and influence. Such a distinct and one of a kind voice. Still one of the most underrated vocalists in metal imho. Love that you tackled this track, Chris. I think it's one of his most interesting performances.
People dont realise that he can still sing high like he did everytime. Just doesnt make any sense for him to do it. Its draining for every age, but young folks just have more gas. The decrease in key is normal in heavy music concerts, making the studio record already in a lower tone helps the live show to sound more like the album. Also he prob will have more gas left to shift to a higher tone in any moment of the live show.
Avenged Sevenfold was really the band that got me into metal. Spencer Sotelo is my favorite metal singer, but Matt along with Einar Solberg, Tommy Karavek, and Jim Grey are in my list after him.
I'd like to say I really love this song. I've done my research on the album and this song because I want to understand it. It's all about existentialism and a French Philosopher Albert Camus and his novels. He published many and this song is about one of them. Fun fact I also realised that the novel this song is about was published May 19th 1942 and avenged's first concert this year is May 19th😄

That's because his vocal voice has changed due to problems with his vocal cords medically.. but fortunately Matt Shadow can still sing and work for the band to this day. We can still hear everything Matt has even if it's slightly different, but that's not a big deal to me as a huge fan since a long time ago Thanks bro for this vidio and Respect 😎🤘
I've seen so many people say that Matt's voice doesn't sound good any more since his last vocal surgery, and I think people are confusing "good" with it not sounding like it did before. It's clearly different and he's going to struggle to sing some of the older stuff live because he has new restraints and he's probably going to have less vocal stamina when they tour (which comes with age any way) but you have to respect how he's been able to adapt and keep going even through the struggles he's had, and he's certainly still an absolutely fantastic vocalist.
Love this video, I’ve heard so many people saying his voice is shot and I felt like I was one of the few who felt the vocals were intentional. I can’t wait to hear the rest of this album, they are all incredibly talented musicians and songwriters. They didn’t get me into metal but have been my favorite band since the first time I heard them.
I'm definitely a believer that M Shadows improves vocally every album. He's waay more musical about it now! I'm just personally not super into the lower register, long stretched out sound that he uses in this song, and "Mad Hatter" from Black Ops 4. I would argue his grit is not vestibular fold driven like it was in the 2010s, now it sounds like a real folds approach. You can hear it in the way he's not belting the notes but rather just singing over them. His hyper compressed, powerful sound required great air pressure and a laryngeal counterpoint (the vestibular folds). The way his distortion is created is through vocal fry (actual vocal fry), I believe David Benitez has demonstrated greatly how to do this here ruclips.net/user/shortsEhAM6P_p_78 He's got numerous examples on this technique. I've tried it myself, it requires extreme amounts of control to get to M. Shadows level. That said though, he's sustained vocal injuries over the years which aids his distortion. He's even declared in interviews he's been having trouble with clean singing. He's by far my favorite vocalist, I wish to some day get to his level. Great analysis!
I agree that it is placed slightly differently than it was before, but this type of grit definitely doesn't (always) sound like vocal fry. There are moments, but you can't get loud and aggressive with vocal fry grit and still have a solid note. I think he still uses the vestibular folds (from sound alone) but it is done in a much more dynamic way.
I would even go so far to say that his grit wasn't even primarily created by the vestibular folds in 2010. Listen to his live performance of 'I won't see you tonight part 1'. It doesn't sound like a pure hyper compressed nor twangy distortion. It sounds like true fold chaos (fry) mixed with some twangy vestibular fold distortion. It just sounded more brutal due to a more chesty, belted mix underneath. Nowadays he's using different clean foundation and less vestibular folds. The best example of his new technique is probably his performance in 'street spirit' by 'these grey men'
I'm back after hearing them live on Area 15, the technique is definitely vestibular fold based I. The level of control Shads displays is just otherwordly tbh, he's actually relaxed while singing the tastiest grittiest textures. His voice is on top form, and the album recording doesn't make justice to the real thing. He's also not going all out, which at the time seemed fantastic but would exhaust him to the point of falling sick, so that's that. Great video to re-visit!
@@schxzoid I listened to his live performance of 'we love you'. The grit in the second chorus, especially on 'million' is absolutely stunning. But it doesn't have huge amounts of compression, otherwise it would sound much darker.
I think it’s because these vocals aren’t over produced like the other records before the stage. Joe has encouraged Matt not to use any tuning etc as well
Even after losing Rev, also even after multiple surgeries they are still producing. Mad respect to A7X.

I wish I could get raspy like that
Hey Chris you should REALLY check out Gojira if you havent already. They have some amazing stuff and the lead singer can really sing
Got one video on them so far! ...check my "in the style of" playlist :)
This pushing and pulling of the voice reminds me of what Dave Grohl did with Foo Fighters song The Pretender
Awesome!
I think it’s because these vocals aren’t over produced like the other records before the stage. Joe has encouraged Matt not to use any tuning etc as well
Or rather these are produced well. I love a7x but damn their pre nightmare stuff sounds like sh*t in terms of producing and mixing.
Love the video
Great video!
Can you react to the song "Grey" by paradise lost? They're highly underrated and the singer has a really cool voice.
He defintely got some Chris Cornell in him.
Anyway, great video, dude!
EDIT: I just realize they have same vocal coach lol
🤘
By the way I tried your 'lift something heavy' -cue and my desk fell over. I do good?
Perfect! :)
@@chrisliepe 😂
Could you please react to BABYMETAL's "First Take" version of their song "Monochrome"? I think it is an excellent video for vocal analysis.
Highly recommend Bring Me The Horizon- Parasite Eve or anything from Jinjer if you have not heard or reviewed them 😁💖
10:17 I was expecting you would comment and analyse the weird vocal harmonies on this part.
Your singing voice actually reminds a bit of rev.
He really does. Check out his Afterlife analysis video.
Comment for da algorithm
Streak count: 200🎉🎉🎉

YESSSSSS!!!!!!!
most people are saying the vocals are not mixed or mixed properly what do you think
Dude I didn’t know Jason Statham reacted to music!
Can you do an analysis video on Brandon Boyd from Incubus?
