I freaking loooove this dish. Its a staple on Americanized Chinese restaurant menus here in MN! Chicken egg foo young FTW!
Chop Suey and Egg Foo Young was invented by Chinese Americans but I believe it originated in NY and not from the west coast. Fortune cookies on the other hand were also invented by Chinese Americans and that was from the west coast, San Francisco to be exact.
Wrong, where do you get this misinformation ? Chop Suey was first served in California, this is a well known fact. Egg Foo Young was first served in Southern China. Fortune cookies I could care less, but being that you are wrong about everything else then you're probably wrong about them as well...
You had me cracking up at the end, you'd get it with shrimp next time, lol.
Egg foo young is quite popular in Chinese restaurants all over the US. I have eaten it in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan even in Canada in Ontario. It is in Chinese restaurants that cater to Americans not the authentic Cantonese restaurants that you usually go to.
I think it’s more popular with the baby boomer generation although not strictly. These days the younger generation have a tendency to like authentic Chinese food dishes if they live in New York especially since social media exposes it
That gravey can be very good. When I grew up in Montreal they had that gravey it was fantastic. We also had chop suey.
Yay! Thank you! Liked this one. Ski on the gravy. Not sure why you haven't seen Egg Foo Young. Even this gringo has had it in New Jersey.
Aloha Danny! Hawaiian/Chinese here with Hawaii and Vegas roots. My family only ate those dishes at home. In Hawaii, the family’s favorite restaurant was “Tasty Chop Suey”. I cannot wait to try the Coronado Cafe, it seems so old school! Mahalo for such a fun video.
A PBS documentary on sandwiches mentions an Egg Foo Young sandwich in St. Louis called a St. Paul.
We had egg foo yung in Chinatown Chicago when I was growing up in the 1950s and probably before that. They had 3 or 4 inch patties with gravy on top (not separately). A few years ago I had it in Southern California and the patties were about 1 1/2 to 2 inches but still in gravy.
In St Louis we have what's called a St Paul Sandwich which is the egg foo young on white bread with pickles & onions...tomatoes and mayo. A St Louis thing.
nuts!
The mid west has odd combination foods that’s not known to mainstream Americans
A friend of mine from China had never heard of Chop Suey. She also would have made a comment about that Americanized rice. For me? I would love to have that meal!
I live in upstate ny and egg foo young is on every Chinese restaurant menu I've been to
Bean sprouts are a main feature of that dish! Not Down Danny the Medic’s alley. shrimp egg fu young smothered in that Chinese gravy is the only way!
DTM, before I even watch video just wanted to acknowledge the work you put in. ✌🏿❤️👊🏿
Oh, I had chop suey and egg foo young plenty of times in Brooklyn while I was growing up. In fact, I enjoyed chop suey more than chow mein normally. I had it both at American Chinese spots and the actual real deal Chinese places we used to go in Flushing, Queen and in NYC itself (and the small Chinatown in Brooklyn at the time). I don't know about nowadays but back in the 80s and 90s it was extremely popular to get, even in real Chinese spots (at least the places we went to at the time).
Chop Suey is very, very old school and has faded into oblivion. Egg Foo Young, while it may be old school, is still very much alive and served at every Chinese restaurant in the NYC area
Egg Foo Young is my favorite "Chinese" dish. I usually order mine with chicken or veal if available
The gravy is usually not as thick but more chow fun like with a umami mushroom flavor
Delicious 😋
How the chop suey came about was left over veggies mixed together and cooked. This evolved into chow mein by adding noodles on top like the noodles that came with your egg for young. By adding eggs to the chop suey this became your egg foo young. However by cooking the eggs like a crepe and putting your chop suey into the crepes this became your egg roll.
Danny grew up in NYC, still have family there, there’s been Egg Foo Young and chop suey on the menus since the 50’s. Is it only a Cantonese dish?
I just looked on Wikipedia. "Egg Foo Young" actually has its own listing. Originated in Guangdong and seems to be popular with Chinese in Indonesia. I grew up in New Jersey and moved to Cali at age 14. I see it on menus more often than not, not gourmet but satisfying when you have the urge. Always at its best when you add shrimp! BTW, as a SoCal guy, Southpointe might be my new hidden gem favorite. Easy parking, great sports book, enough tables and slots to satisfy, and my most treasured thing...a no frills, not fancy 24 hour coffee shop. Egg Foo Young and chocolate cake at 3am? No problem!!
Pork Egg Foo Young is one of my favorites. I've had it North, South, East and West. Surprised you've never had it. Best with the gravy poured over. Many guesses how it came about. Fu Rong is a Cantonese dish that may have inspired Chinese cooks in America
This is one of my favorite dishes to get at the Chinese restaurants here on Saint Thomas. Must have it with the gravy.
My Dad was in the Pacific during WWII. He told me Chop Suey and Egg Foo Young were common street food for the service people because it seemed familiar to them. Mixed vegetables with meat or an omelet.
Wo Hop on Mott Street has Egg Foo Young. I think they also have Chop Suey, next time you want to try.
I love egg foo young. My favorite chinese dish. Ive eaten it at Chinese take outs and restaurants around Las Vegas and California. Ive had chop suey mostly at Chinese take outs on the East Coast. Im going to try the Coronado cafe for the pork egg foo young. Good price for 3 pieces. Making me hungry!!
Danny, we used to eat Shrimp Egg Foo Young all the time when we lived in Maryland on the East Coast. Yummy.
Question for you, have you come across any Shrimp Toast here in Las Vegas? If so, where? One of my favorite Chinese appetizers.
Next time try the Egg Foo Young with Shrimp, it's so good. 🍤
I seem to recalled, egg foo young is essentially an omelet made with mung bean spouts, scallions, and shrimp.
Also never tried either of those in my 59 years, but I think Egg Fu Young aka Fu Yung Fai is a dish originating from the Guangdong area. Thx for sharing.
Foo Yung Dahn :) LOVE IT! :) Maybe you are right, I'm a west coast kid :) THANKS MUCH for sharing!
As a child (west coast), egg foo young always came with a thick brown gravy. Nowadays, every now and then, I see a thin clear-ish gravy, which is not my preference. Also, I notice that rice is mixed in the patty. I NEVER had rice in egg foo young until lately.
Roast pork egg foo young is at Americanized Chinese places in Pennsylvania for the last several decades
Hey Danny, grew up in NYC in the 60's and 70's and you obviously missed all the Americanized Chinese Cantonese Menus: Sample Combo plate: BBQ ribs, chicken chop suey / pork or shrimp egg foo young and fried rice ( with won ton / egg drop soup and dessert too ).
Egg foo young and chop suey are my go tos when I'm feasting on chinese food. But we only have chinese-indonesian cuisine if you don't go to a specialty restaurant.
I'm from Upstate NY and both are on all the menu's of our Chinese restaurants.
Dan, Egg Foo Young is delicious. It's sold in most Chinese restaurants. Next time get it with pork or shrimp. You should have put the gravy on top
I’m from Long Island and had egg foo young many a time. I like it
Oh Danny, I'm so glad you enjoyed the Egg Foo Young. I really like it, my personal preference is to get the Chicken Egg Foo Young, the shredded pork is also one I like a lot, and it's one of my Son's favorites too. Whenever I get dinner for our family from one of the local Chinese Take Out Restaurants, Egg Foo Young is almost always one of the items I order, along with 3 or 4 other items so that everyone is sure to get one of their favorites. I am actually surprised that this is the first time you've tried it. Thank for sharing your experience.
We have both in NJ. Egg foo young has a brown gravy sauce that it’s usually poured on top (way too much). I love omelettes, but not a big fan of egg foo young. Danny, you ate vegetables?
Love egg foo young! Next time try the shrimp egg foo young Danny.
Are you going to have chop suey at some point? I would like to see that video.
Yep. Egg Foo Young super popular since the 1970s on the west coast. There were tons of Chinese American restaurants that invented dishes for the American palate. You must have it all together. Make a bed of rice, place your egg foo young on top and smother in gravy! Perfection. My family usually orders the pork - chopped up BBQ pork.
Yay, I was born in the 60's and ate Chinese Food frequently; and this was one of my family's fav, this and Shrimp and Lobster Sauce - and if you ever been to Boston - the other family fav is Gai Poo Lo Mein.
I loved the comments about rice! Reminds me of when I went to California for university. The tomatoes and grapefruit were to die for delicious. The rice sucked!
I heard her say, she likes the shrimp. I told you. Forget the beef or chicken with this dish.
There is egg foo yong in like every Chinese place on Long Island lol. You're supposed to pour the gravy on it.
I got a St Paul sandwich in St Louis, Mo. recently. Egg Foo Young between 2 slices of bread.
Chinese on Long Island always had egg foo Yung and Chop suey! Every single place I've ever eaten at.
I live in CT, and Egg Foo Yong is standard on most menus here. I usually get mine with shrimp.
Asian rice with lead and chemicals taste better?
Hello Danny ❤ and We love your video ❤ and I never had Egg Fong Young. L.o.l and Sound good Egg Fong Young. Food so Delicious 😋 ❤
Egg foo young is my go-to
Makes me so hungry for egg foo young from my local Chinese restaurant!
I live in PA and my local Chinese restaurant has egg foo young. I order it often.
We live in the Midwest and always have schrimp egg foo young and chop suey
I have been eating egg foo young for over 35 years here in Oklahoma. Usually order it with pork. Chicken is usually pretty good as well.
Lol! Both egg foo young and chop suey belong on the American menu! Chop Suey is said to be a New York invention. Egg Foo Young was supposedly an Americanized version of a Cantonese dish in San Francisco. Cantonese make cha siu with egg or shrimp with egg….I know DTM don’t pay extra but a vegan egg foo young? Probably with bean sprouts…even if you got it with cha siu or shrimp, I think it would be different than the Cantonese version. Thanks for giving it a try. I might need to try it some day….years ago before the three elephant or Buddha jasmine rice, my parents used to buy Texas long grain rice.
Been forever since ive had egg foo young. I didnt think you'd like it since it has lots of bean sprouts in it
When I lived in Ohio, shrimp egg foo young was one of my regulars. So delicious 😋. Of course, it varied depending on where you went.
In Flushing: either pork or chicken Chop Suey-$6.65 for a Pt, or $9.20 for a Qt.
Includes white rice
The Egg Foo Young is a chinese American dish back in the 50's Americans love's.
It cook with eggs, chop celery, bean sprout, onion, mix with flour with or with out meat mix inside, than fry at a wok, than fry in hot oil fryer when order' so its crispy. The Gravy is make with pig fat which turn into oil mix with flour, so the gravy than pour on top off the Egg Foo Young. The chop suey is different type cut up vegetables, mix with meat.
I love Egg Foo Young!! I live in Maryland, it’s very popular here!! The Best I’ve had was in NYC!!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I stick with my prime ribs in that place
I grew up in Minneapolis in the fifties. Chinese restaurants at that place and time served their chop suey over crispy fried noodles.😮
Egg foo young was one of my favorites to order from a local Chinese take out place. They came in the box soaking in the gravy, not separate like yours.
I love egg foo young❣ diffently with the gravy🌻 But they are not all created equal. Some better than others
egg foo young and chop suey sent thousand of chinese kids through school .
Egg Foo Young is offered here in Florida; in fact, I just had some last week.
Egg Foo Young ALWAYS comes IN gravy from my experiences...and its Sooo Good!!
How to get Danny the Medic to eat his vegetables: fry them in egg batter and cover them in gravy
Hello from Ohio. I've been eating egg foo young at Chinese restaurants since the 1970's. So yummy my favorite Chinese dish. Usually it's a cheaper option with a good portion. Because I'm a cheap SOB!!! LOL But Danny, it has BEAN SPROUTS 😮
It's like good chicken gravy with MSG and oyster sauce and soy sauce. Some chefs put onion and green onion and then strain it out. I really like it and I like making egg foo young with that gravy! I mostly like that shrimp egg foo young. Much goodness!
I first had egg foo young and chop suey in Nogales, Mexico.
I had an egg foo yong and chop suy in east coast(south) long long time ago. Rice, egg and thick gravy all over. Was good
I love that on the east coast. Grew up on both.
I love Egg Foo Young!!! It's one of my favorite Chinese dishes. (I believe both Egg Foo Young and Chop Suey were invented by Chinese American chefs, i.e., they're not Chinese dishes from China.)
Hey Danny, North Carolina has had egg foo young since at least 50 years ago. I started eating as a child. Chop Suey isn't as prevalent. We have the chow mein that's boiled and doesn't contain noodles.
🤣.. too funny! The way you were describing the rice, Uncle Ben's came to my mind & then you said it immediately after my thought. American style like Minute Rice is the worst..like eating micro plastics. Must be at least jasmine or authentic imports I can get at the Asian market wholesalers by the docks in NY, not necessarily NYC, but the good stuff, as well as "sticky rice" from my Laotian neighbors. I'm spoiled like that..👍
Rice is Rice. I don't usually notice a difference unless its brown rice or fried rice. American food is different depending on what part of the country its made in. Same with gravy. Thanks for the video!!
If you liked it, you should try it at other places. Not all egg foo yung are the same. One can be onion heavy, one can be bean sprout heavy, they can have more or less egginess, but most importantly, they can come with different gravies. The most common is that brown type gravy you tried, but there's also been some with a more yellow gravy, and then some with a clear gravy, which is also very good.
Think you're right about Egg Foo young being western idea. I grew up in So cal and as a kid it was my favourite. It's hard to find now. At least good Egg Foo Young. Glad you found at my go to Casino!
Shrimp Egg Foo Young is awesome
Looked really small compared to where I come from. Love it though and was my dads favorite.
DANNY the MEDIC- Egg Foo Young makes me YOUNGER!!🥚
I've never had egg foo young or chop suey either lol....
My favorite
Im from Bostom. We always had egg foo young and chop suey since at least the 60s. Now i live in Myrtle Beach SC and even the Chinese restaurants around here have both of those items. Surprised you never had it in NYC at least in the Americanized Chinese places.
I make my own egg foo young and gravy. So good. No chop seuy for me.
Danny former NY’r here (now in Vegas)
I always had Egg Fo Yong in NY, Brooklyn & Queens😃
As a child, I developed a fondness for Egg Fu Young with Chinese gravy. Watch out Danny, it contains vegetable matter! The Wikipedia says the recipe came from Guangdong. The Vegas menu left out bamboo shoots, one of the tastier ingredients.
Most Americans have only had nasty canned bamboo shoots. Fresh ones don't look anything like canned shoots, and they're very tender and delicious.
I'm from New Jersey. We have had egg foo young since I was a kid. It is now fading away as there are fewer old school Cantonese chefs left. It tastes best with all the components together, gravy, egg and rice.
when i lived in NY i ordered egg foo young all the time and still do here in connecticut!!!
Chop suey literally translates assorted pieces. There was a time when chow mein noodles werent available so you had the crunchy fried substitute
You should try egg foo young with sweet-and-sour sauce
The chef told me the turkey gravy came from Garden Buffet next door. Disgusting
I'm surprised you like a dish full of vegetables. Can you reach South Point via bus or do you need a car to get there?
Yes gravy, on top of the patty .
You should have gotten the shrimp. In my opinion heavier meats don't really go well with egg fu yung.
Had egg foo young numerous times growing up in Queens, NY and now in Brooklyn. Recommend it with a protein like shrimp or roast pork. Love to eat it with gravy and rice. Always got it from a Chinese American take out joint. Never had chop suey though.
In NYC, egg foo young is ALWAYS served with brown gravy
“And gravy?” Gravy is what makes the dish, Danny! They usually just smother it on top of the omelette…
