- You may be looking at purchasing a tesla in the near future or are just curious about what kind of maintenance needs to be done on an all-electric vehicle. I’ve owned my tesla model 3 mid-range since December of 2018 and you may ask what routine service have I done on this car since then.
This recommended maintenance is nearly identical of the tesla model Y.

In this video I describe what maintenance is needed on a tesla and what is recommended by the owners manual. Overall servicing your tesla is very easy and over the long term will save you money in comparison to an ICE vehicle.
These were the core maintenance services needed on a tesla model 3. Service needs are nearly the same for the tesla model Y. As you can see there’s really not that much maintenance needed in comparison to a regular gasoline vehicle. Still to this day, I have not one regret from switching from gas to electric. I can still do road trips with teslas massive supercharger network and I never worry about running out of battery because I plug in a work or at home when I’m not driving. I look forward to what Elon has coming out in the future and could not be more excited about Tesla as they continue to not only dominate the car industry but also its path to a sustainable energy future. Dude maybe go to Ego system and use the blower to dry of your Tesla like other have!
tires! tires! tires!. That's what you need. My model 3 needs new set of tires every 16k miles. I am a disciplined driver.
Coule you go with a different tire or tire and rim? This sounds like a problem with the all wheel drive system
This. I am *not* a disciplined driver in the RWD 3 and spun out on the freeway because the inside of my rear tires were almost completely bald after like 7k miles, lol.
@@snowrabbit9558 lol
I actually cant wait to replace my tires. Want run flats. Having no spare is an issue for me. I know Tesla says they will send someone out to change the tire but in the hidden comments it says you have to be less than 50 miles form a service center. Also don't want to wait an hour n the middle of the winter.
I just moved to Savannah where we had no service center... it was over 150 miles away... long story short... I got a flat and they still sent out a tow truck and sent my car to a tire center...
Break fluid being replaced has nothing to do with using the brakes and the fact that brake fluid absorbs water like a sponge.
Precisely. And to what you said about the fluid absorbing water, that in turn causes corrosion in the brake lines. Unless they are made of copper-nickel, change the fluid every two years.
DOT4, yes. DOT3, not so much. DOT 5.1, not at all.
My model S takes DOT 3. Testing shows copper less than 5, wet boiling point 475.
If the pads don't wear, then the master cylinder stays full, less air volume, for outside air to enter.
@@aerodyneservices Pretty much correct except that all brake systems have moisture penetration regardless of DOT fluid used. The difference between 3/4 and 5 is the moisture is absorbed into the fluid. With 5, the moisture puddles in the lines and corrodes them in those locations. Also, if the lines get hot the puddled moisture will vaporize and be even more easily compressible under braking which can reduce stopping distance. So changing brake fluid as the maintenance schedule recommends is the way to go.
This. Bra wrong on this one
Yup. All hydroscopic liquids have an affinity to moisture.
Brake fluid should be replaced at recommended intervals regardless if you 'use' them or not.
As with any vehicle you should always turn off the AC and run the fan vented for a few minutes before shutting it off. Most people don't know this, but they should.
Tesla has now pushed a software update to all the model 3's to run the fans automatically after we exit the vehicle. I now hear the fan running randomly on the car when I go in my garage.
Agree.
why?
@@Wub892 Because running the fans after turning off the AC will remove moisture that is in the air, and thus prevent the moldy smell.
@@Resist4 if i had listened to the entire video like a smart person would, I would have got the 101 on that haha. thanks for letting me know more on that
I just got a 2018 model 3! I love it! Thanks for the info duder
if the tesla made a phone w software like the google pixel but better, it would be GAME OVER.
Informative video. As mentioned in the comments below, brake lines not made of copper-nickel will corrode when water permeates into the fluid, so change it at two years. Also rotate your tires at 6,000 like all other vehicles making sure to follow the service manual's location when moving them. Also tire inflation.
Great video man!! I’m saving up for my Tesla or rivian, I have cerebral palsy I use a walker and wheelchair
And another useful and informative video. Thanks Evan glad the filter change and cleaning did the trick. Stay safe...
Lots of cars manufacturers recommend changing the fluid every 3 years - brake fluid absorbs moisture, especially in humid climate. I wonder what the impact to a Tesla is comparatively.
Unless it had copper-nickel lines, corrosion will start occurring.
Good review. So far for my Tesla no maintenance was needed at all since I live in California where is gas is expensive which I have saved a lot on ever since switching to an EV. I think Tesla or any other EV are perfect for area's where the weather is not to harsh.
I agreed. But it needs to add car insurance for Tesla usually cost at least $50 per month more compare with gas car. Maintenance fee cost double or triple such as tires, brakes etc. Annual sticker cost double. If something wrong happen, be prepared for a few grand to fix it and get a rental car a few days while waiting.
Thanks Evan for a great video. This is very helpful.
Great video! Thanks this will help me when i get mine in a couple of years! Lol
I live in Illinois and while I don’t own a Tesla, One of my worries when I do buy one🤞🏻 would be the health of battery. It gets up to 100°F and can go -20°F
You'd be surprised at how well the battery maintains optimal temperature to maintain longevity regardless of the severe temps outside. The car will do this all on its own too.
I’m considering moving to Arizona and I was worried bout the same thing. It gets well above 100 nearly everyday in the summer. That’s hello. Batteries.
Nice video. You should be getting way more views!
Thank you much! Share with your friends!
Excellent video, very informative 👍🚗
Thank you I appreciate it!
Mine needs tires because they're always smoking!!!!!eeeeeerrrg!
In Canada, people say it absolutely need rustproofing and its a long job.
Also as the paint job is thin a 3m film need to wrap the body.
There should be a small solar panel in the car to keep tesla charged to a minimal level.
The Tesla roadside dude showed up in a Ford. I just think that's kind of funny lol
On the fence about purchasing a 2021 Model 3. Build quality and tire wear are really making me think long and hard! I get 30k-40k on my truck tires and cant see having to replace tires every 7k-20k! Might be a deal breaker.
Totally agree! It depends how hard you drive the vehicle.. again this will vary for everyone.
Don’t hesitate. I’d say get it, the tires is nothing to worry about. The car will blow you away. Most people don’t even consider going back to an ICE car after owning a Tesla. It’s a whole new experience and absolutely worth it. Had to wait four months for mine but definitely worth the wait and I’d say better than anything on the market right now.
Many people felt exciting to own and drive tesla. But quite many people quitted tesla after dealing with issues. Usually cost atleast a few grand. Anyway, drive tesla is interesting but be prepared some cash atleast a few grand in hand when something happen.
I change my Tesla model Y tire every 50k miles
New tires needed at 18k? My Prius goes 2x that distance on a set of tires. That is very fast wear but with the torque these car produce it’s not a big surprise. Even more reason not to get the big rims.. save money on tires every 2 years.
Please don’t compare a Prius to a Tesla lol
HI Evan,
Thank you for sharing your time and experience, particularly on the ride sharing business model.
I have some additional questions that might be best off line but happy to ask here if you prefer.
Thanks, Alan
I'll check my email, thanks
love Tesla dont like the build finishing quality ...... waiting for the German Tesla build later tis year
So, the best way to preserve the battery is to leave it plugged in? That means it would always be charged to 100%. Then why do many here on youtube say to only charge it to 80% and occasionally charge to 100% to preserve the battery? Confusing...
I got the same car at the same time as you; the Mid-Range in Dec 2018. Just in time before the fed tax credit got cut in half. I’m curious how your range is now. I only get around 245 miles of range now. A lot less than the advertised 264 mile range.
I just made a vidoe on this.. check it out... ruclips.net/video/ZZxcoHNT_oc/видео.html
I actually want to own a tesla in real life and one of the main reasons why is because teslas don't require a lot of maintenance unlike gas wich needs more maintenance
I live in NC too own a M3 2020 need to do the cabin air filter change, Hope I do it directly lol 😂
ruclips.net/video/smPC6msqUUQ/видео.html
Evan Michiels thanks Evan hope to see ya at a supercharger in hickory one day 😆
One thing I don't really like about the vehicle is the similarity of the interiors among models. Very utilitarian. I realize this because the touchscreen does everything and no other knobs or buttons are needed giving the empty landscape of the dashboard. But like the interior of a home, all rooms the same color are boring. Tesla needs to glam up the interior.
Why do I get nervous watching him watch an electric car with water ?🤣
Good video!!!! But please never wash your car on direct sunlight.
Why
@@Karatbuldit378 Because the water evaporates in the sun before you have a chance to dry it with a towel, leaving water mineral deposits that are hard to clean
You scratch your paint if you wipe it before it is clean.
Great video
Replacing tires at 18k? I’d have to replace my tiers ever year. That seems like quick wear
Depends how crazy of a driver you are .
If that damn screw was anywhere but the top, the filter would be so easy to change lol.
RUclips recommended this to me but I am owner of Wagon R which is not electric.
Volvo ?
using a Hepa filter on any AC system that was not designed for it is a very bad idea. When using an air filter that filters really well you have to understand that brand new this filter is extremely restrictive and causes the blower/fan to work much harder. It also causes less air to pass through the evaporator which will cause the refrigerant saturation temperature to go down, and you'll end up with a frozen evaporator. Same thing can happen from having a very dirty filter. In a home, if good filtration is desired than extra return air ducts are installed, or very large and oversized ducts are installed. In a car this is not possible. Just because these filters are made doesn't mean they are supposed to be used. So just be aware that this kind of filtration will certainly have a negative effect on the AC system.
Spoken like a true mechanical engineer. Brings back memories of Thermodynamics class.
What's up with your charge port??? Time code 5:06 has another port? Is that a NEW THING?
This is the Chinese version.
Does the car alert you on LOW WASHER FLUID?
Yes, it will notify you.
In the beginning you mentioned that there were 200 moving parts and a gas engine. And then you compared it to the 17 moving parts in a Tesla drive train so you would’ve had to include the reduction gears to get up to 17. I don’t know why people keep repeating this 200 moving parts statistic for gas cars. 200 moving parts is just for a four-cylinder gas engine and doesn’t include the hundreds and hundreds of moving parts inside of an automatic transmission or even 100 parts in a mechanical manual transmission. Show my wife is that the 200 moving parts is just for a small gas engine it doesn’t include a transmission. The transmission like an 10R80 Ford transmission must have 500 parts on its own and then you have many more parts are in a V8 that has four valves per cylinder. So compared with a Tesla icy cars have many more parts than the stated 17 multiple, it’s more like 40 or 41 times as many parts in an ice car than in a Tesla.
Thank you for the technical analysis !
Why did you spray coolant onto the coils in the filter compartment?
hi, what about the 12V battery?
I’ve been hearing reports of people having to change this lately. I have yet to experience any issues with it.
how much you get for incentive in NC?
no government incentive to purchase an EV in the state of NC
The only problem I have with Tesla cars is fit & finish....It's very sloppy. I was interested in a Model Y. But I decided to wait for the Ford Mach-E, instead.
Just wait a bit, the first batch was a little sloppy, I live an hour away from the Fremont factory and mine was perfect as I took delivery yesterday
Doesn’t Ford have a large recall going on? I’d rather deal with panel gaps then constant never ending recalls.
I've seen too many videos of Model Y's leaking to recommend you getting one. My Model 3 came fine, no leaks or anything. Mach-E tho, interesting choice. What's you thoughts on the i-Pace or the BMW i4?
@@anguswett
Regarding the Model Y, it isn't just about about leaking. The car is plagued with all the issues of previous Tesla models, as well as some of its own (such as poor rear seat alignment and issues the electronic folding device). I hadn't focused much on the i-pace and i4. So, I reserve my thoughts when I have more knowledge of both. But I think the quality of the Mach-E will be much better than Model Y.
6 years on my tire haven’t rotated it and they are wearing evenly
Cuz you don’t drive much
@@nhattran1074 probably I have 45k mike on the tires
is mid-range the similar to the Standard Range+? Or is this a different trim?
Same exact trim, battery slightly different. Mid-Range 260 miles EPA estimate... Standard Range + 250 Miles EPA estimate.
@@EMtesla1 thank you for the reply
How do we charge at home ? Do we have to have a special
Plug ?
Please see my website on this… evanmichiels.com/charging-your-tesla
Does Tesla cars have to go for a first service(inspection) after they reach the first 600-700 miles?
No not required
18k miles and you need tires?
Tesla burns through tires way quicker due to its high torque capability. Of course this is dependent on driving habits.
Does this guy have capability to drive itself?
bro u got the fishbowl tesla wow
not sure I understand
amazon perfect answer Marques, sony is another one. microsoft

And who wants to handle all that maintenance on a gas car anyway I think it's a waste of time
