Hey, me again. Here in Germany we eat Rhubarb only until 24th June. After that it contains to much oxalic acid, which makes it a bit poisonous and it's after that date less tasty. The plant also needs to store energy for next year's growth, so we leave it alone and don't harvest it until next spring. We usually eat it at the same time as asparagus, which is a big thing here around Berlin. We love asparagus season (and rhubarb season). Sorry for being such a party pooper, but I thought you should know and check, also about that thing with eating beans raw...

    That watermelon, Gaz ...
    (SE Europe here)
Ripe ones have a yellow-white spot underneath and the tendril close to the melon is a bit browned. Yours is still green all around, but there are white varieties, but if you harvest an unripe melon you can do like my friend who grew up in Thailan and cut it and dip the pieces in a mix of sugar, chopped chili fruits and a little salt.

I’ve been growing food since 2019, I started with a couple of pots then had a little strip of ground in the garden, and now I’ve got a big allotment plot but this really makes me motivated to have my own homestead. Nothing better than growing your own veg and seeing the end product on your plate ❤ Last year I did a lot of preserving & canning and hope to do more this year. The plan is to get a years worth of more items each year, last year I had red and white onions, bell peppers, blackberries, strawberries and sweetcorn.
Love your videos, amazing to see your progress 😊

When you were picking that watermelon I was shouting at the screen that it wasn't ready! The tendril and the stem that attaches it to the main stem have to turn brown and die off before they are ready. So I wasn't surprised that it wasn't ripe. At least you know for the next one. Also when melons are ready for picking they smell very "melony".
I discovered your channel a few weeks ago and love your passion. We moved to our bungalow 4 years ago due to my declining health and chronic pain. We have a much larger garden than our previous home, nothing like your plot, and I've really got into growing our own. Charles Dowding and Jess at Roots and Refuge farm have been my inspiration. Ok you got me invested in sharing knowledge after saying you're harvesting your first watermelon today and then describing the struggles. Next year try using the woven weed mat to plant your watermelons on outside of your greenhouse, the plastic absorbs the suns heat and mimics the heat of the sand they originally grew on. Watermelons really respond to heat, you'll just need to put some mulch or something else to raise the fruits off the ground a little once they start developing. Other than that I think your methods will work to grow nice watermelons. I'm about to harvest my very first watermelon myself this morning in about 30 minutes once the flowers open up for the day. I've done a ridiculous amount of research though and trust me it makes a difference, I'm pretty sure my sugar baby watermelon I'm about to harvest is well above average weight but I will soon find out.

❤❤ GAZ!! Your garden looks AMAZING! Watermelons have a little curly tendril on the vine where the watermelon is growing, and it's at its ripest when that tendril is all dried out and shriveled. You can eat watermelons at any point in time and they are good, but the longer they are on the vine ripening, the more amazing the taste gets. You should have more than one, let the other ones grow and watch the tendril. Thank you for yet another great video! It makes me smile to see your gorgeous garden and great cooking. Your camera man does a great job too!! ❤❤

Great video, thank you all for making it. I still use your Plants Only cookbook weekly 👍🏼 Also, one of my melon plants produces white fleshed melons, so you were probably right to harvest it anyway 😁 Try growing Dragons Egg cucumbers next year, for large, egg-shaped, white cucumbers with tasty flesh and a skin that is soft and very edible. Be well, Sally 🌹

Gaz, you mush have known it already, but just saying that quinoa seeds have a bitter saponin coating and it that must be removed prior to cooking them. So wash them in water and rub vigorously multiple times until no suds form in the water. Others even suggest to put seeds into pillow-case and run in washing machine without detergent of course, seems a bit extreme, so I think prefer just washing and washing and washing🌊😀

Thank you so much for all your content and all the work you are putting in!
If you do a garden to table cookbook, may I please float a few ideas that I would love to see and buy in a book. To follow a seasonal growing/harvesting lay out, then within each season the best crops to grow and a few of your favourite recipes that hero that produce. Almost the ultimate culmination of gardening and cooking.
Thanks again, throughly enjoying your channel

I've been gardening for at least 30 years and my gardens have never looked that good! I live in Maine and this year has been too much rain, not enough sun. I would love to see a harvest cookbook with gardening wisdoms. I have the cookbooks but recently someone gave me one of her favorite cookbooks, it was Plants Only Kitchen! I already had it so I regifted it.
