Hi I’m Christine from uk. I’m off work sick at mo and this is perfect for me. I want to easily refurbish my bedside lampshades if possible and this a nice easy way to do that. Can’t wait to get started. 😊
Awesome tutorial! Gave me the confidence to do what I knew would work--painting a lampshade with a brush and acrylic paint. It turned out great. Thank you!!
Was hoping to see the lightbulb on at end............... This was the whole reason to watch a video on painting a lampshade (to see if it was even and opaque???).
You can paint your glass wall with paint, not the permanent kinds, my husband as an extra job would paint the windows on restaurants I think it was tempera paint, the used to find old fashioned cards that were given to them and they would style it after that, was very cute and it can be a great excuse to keep the windows cleaned because it needs it as the season changes. Love the artwork. Blessings.
HI TATIANA, I JUST REMEMBERED AN EXPERIENCE I HAD PAINTING CHRISTMAS WINDOWS. I HOPE IT’S OK IF I ADD IT HERE, AS IT MIGHT HELP SOMEONE. YES, TEMPURA PAINT WORKES JUST FINE FOR REGULAR GLASS WINDOWS. WHEN THEY ARE DIRTY/DUSTY THE TEMPURA PAINT STICKS TO THEM MUCH BETTER THAN IF THEY HAVE BEEN CLEANED BEFORE PAINTING. I THINK THE DUST PROVIDES A LITTLE GRIT FOR THE PAINT TO HOLD ON TO. IF THEY LOOK A LITTLE UNKEPT AROUND THE EDGES, A LITTLE SPRAY OF CANNED SNOW, AND A SMALL TOSS OF CLEAR CRYSTALLINE GLITTER WORKS LIKE MAGIC! THE TEMPURA PAINT NEEDS A LOT OF COLOR MIXING TO GET ANYTHING OTHER THAN “FINGER PAINTING” BASICS. BEWARE OF DOING BANK WINDOWS AS THIS IS MADE OF SPECIAL BULLET PROOF GLASS AND IT WILL REPEL THE TEMPURA PAINT, WHICH WILL LIFT OFF AND IN SOME PLACES EVEN FALL TO THE GROUND. FOR THESE TYPE OF WINDOWS YOU HAVE TO USE HOUSE PAINT, WHICH IS RUBBER BASED AND WILL HOLD FINE ON THE WINDOWS. YOU CAN ALSO MORE EASILY TWEEK THE COLORS BY STARTING WITH A MORE DIVERSE BASE PALETTE AND THEREFOR OFFERING A MORE INTERESTING FINISHED PALETTE. IF DOING BANK WINDOWS DON’T HEAD OVER TO THE KRAFT AND HOBBY STORE TO PICK UP SOME PAINT BECAUSE THAT TYPE OF PAINT IS LATEX BASED. LATEX AND RUBBER ARE TWO VERY DIFFERENT THINGS. MAKING MONEY WITH WINDOW PAINTING IS ABOUT SPEED AND ORGANIZATION. THE ECONOMY IS SO DAMAGED RIGHT NOW, I DON’T THINK MANY RETAILERS ARE HAVING THEIR WINDOWS PAINTED. THEY’RE LUCKY TO BE HANGING ON AT ALL REALLY, WITH THE COMPETITION ON LINE, AND THE SUPPLY CHAIN PROBLEMS.
Good morning Mary. I live in Texas and it's 5:45 am. I'm waiting to watch yout video, anticipating what your plans are to upgrade this beautiful lamp. I will share what I think of your finished project.
Melbourne, Australia. Currently in Lockdown no 5! Trying to get an old lampshade remade but have just been told no-one does it anymore, so looks like I'd better learn something.
Awesome video!! I saw a video where someone used 4 CANS of spray paint. I thoight to myself, there has to be a better way. Thank you for my Sunday DYI.
It would look stunning if you would paint the whole lamp bronze, even the glass part, 2 coats, and then do a patina green brush on and wipe off to distress it. Even a touch of patina blue to give a little more contrast to the glass portion. That lamp is very out dated to 1970’s and was sold almost everywhere. A patina color would really bring it along to the 2020’s and give a hint of European Flair.
We haven't tried this with other types of paint, but I don't think it would be a problem! Maybe just test out a small area, let it dry and see how you like the look before you fully dive in.
Inverness, Scotland I want to paint a lampshade that is a light brown colour a duck egg colour similar to the paint colour you have used. Would this work or would it help to put a white coat on first?
I don't think there would be enough heat from the lightbulb to affect the dry time much, but you can certainly let it air dry if you have more time than Mary did in this video!
Is there any danger for heat /fire with paint on a lampshade? What if the inside needs paint? thanks so much! I was about to spend over $200 for a new shade!
I'm sorry to hear that Judi! It might help to thin the paint down just a little bit and apply it in thinner coats. Or try applying it with a painting sponge instead of a brush.
Mary films a lot of our content and works for Country Chic Paint :) Learn more about the creators of our wonderful paint here: www.countrychicpaint.com/pages/our-story
I wanted to see what it looked like with lamp on. I'm not on facebook, so was disappointed to watch it all and then find out thay u have to go to facebook to see the end result
So don’t bother trying to mix the mustard and liquorice to get the olive colour, just use one colour on the fabric? That’s great to know I’d only need a sample pot too , thanks for that advice
My chalk paint soaked threw so now the inside of the shade is all blotchy. I used a dark color. Can you paint the inside of the shade with chalk paint without over heating or cause a hazard?
When the light is on, this will show up blotchy, I tried it using the same products. Notice she doesn't show finished shade with the light on. Looks great when light is off.
Hi Mary, have you ever seen the movie JOE VS THE VOLCANO? Have you ever seen a lamp like that? Could you help us make one. Your videos might get me there, bit by bit. Thank you
What sort of paint are you using? I’m from the UK and want to paint a vintage floral lampshade and need a paint that will cover the flowers! Thank you.
Hi Mary, thanks for your reply! I should have explained , I want to paint the actual shade which is unlined fabric. It is quite dark in colour , browns and beige. I’d like to paint it an olive type green. How many coats do you think I would need to cover it and would I need to do anything else having printed it with the chalk paint? Thanks very much, Rebecca x
Would the Sage and Hollow Hill work better covering a dark surface than Fresh Mustard and Liquorice? I want to create an olive type colour. Thank you. X
@@rebeccareuben-williams9278 Yes, it might cover better! However, those two colors mixed wouldn't make a true olive tone. It's ultimately up to you and the color you're going for. If you're just painting a lampshade, our 4 oz jars should be plenty of paint for that :)
Hi from the Uk. Great video. Just need to ask, is the lampshade fabric, plastic or thick paper that you just painted please? The lampshade I want to paint is thick paper, would your paint work on thick paper please?

I came across your video to repaint a lampshade. I also love the paper idea you used for your background and love the flowers!
Great idea! Thanks alot hello from Springfield Missouri
Hi Mary
Love your workspace and the work you’re doing. I love watching your videos. I’m getting up the courage for a project.
Thanks Cynthia! 😊 YOU can definitely do something like this & I can't wait to see. ~Mary
From NYC. I have a few lamps I have to decorate. Great idea.
Dune grass looks very nice and an easy color to decorate with. Looks good with the lamp base. Would love to see a glaze presentation.
I'm glad you like it Genna!
Great video. Very informative.

I am in Utah, anxiously waiting to do my own lamp shade!
Oh, that sounds like a great project! What color are you using?
Is this just acrylic paint?
Can you also use water color?
Looking forward to your video. From Alabama
Getting ready to paint my lamp shade for the first time!!! Have you ever used an extra fine powdery glitter?
We haven't, but that would be such a fun experiment!
Love your creatity!! YOU ROCK! 😇
Good morning!I'm Gabriela from Hull.Love your Wall.Thank you for your video.x
I also had a brown shade and I painted it and go it makes a big difference
It sure does!

Melbourne, Australia. Currently in Lockdown no 5! Trying to get an old lampshade remade but have just been told no-one does it anymore, so looks like I'd better learn something.
What paint brand are you using please. Very creative ❤
Hi Mary, What is the name of the paint you use on your lampshades?
It's Dune Grass by Country Chic Paint!
Would you be able to do a black shade?
Yes! We were actually just talking about doing another lampshade tutorial in a dark color so hopefully we'll be able to get that in the works soon!
I have old dress has nice embroidery work how can I use it to decorating my old lamp shade ?
Hmm, I'm not an expert in this area, but perhaps find some edging/trim that you could attach around the bottom of the lampshade?
Awesome video!! I saw a video where someone used 4 CANS of spray paint. I thoight to myself, there has to be a better way. Thank you for my Sunday DYI.
That was the first video I saw and thought about the SAME THING lol
I am from the UK . I want to paint a stiff paper shade I think it is, will this be ok. Thanks
Sounds like it would work great!
What colour should I buy to paint lamp shed
Love the color it goes with everything
Yes it does! Thanks for watching.

Just subscribed to your channel. Love it!!!
Thank you Donna!
Looks great! What kind of paint is this? Is it chalk paint?
It's a water-based, chalk-style paint, yes!
Thank you!!! I will definitely be painting my lamp shades instead of buying a new ones..
Will this work with patterned lampshades? Specifically vintage designs.
I would like to know how to paint fabric lampshade
I have very large pleated lamp shades in pink and I want to paint them white or light grey, can I use latex paint and brush?
We haven't tried this with other types of paint, but I don't think it would be a problem! Maybe just test out a small area, let it dry and see how you like the look before you fully dive in.
Thanks so much. I ended up doing both shades and it looks great, but it does lower the light that comes through which is perfect for me
Hi Scarlet from Miami. What's the name of the paint company?
Thanks for watching, Scarlet! We're Country Chic Paint :) www.countrychicpaint.com/
Do you need to use fabric paint for this or just regular paint?
Our water-based paint works well for this! We've tried using fabric mediums along with Country Chic Paint but found they didn't make much difference.
Do you have to paint inside the shade too
Inverness, Scotland
I want to paint a lampshade that is a light brown colour a duck egg colour similar to the paint colour you have used. Would this work or would it help to put a white coat on first?
If it's light brown to start with then I think you should be just fine to apply the duck egg color straight over it!
What is the brand of paint and can you use any brand
We recommend Country Chic Paint for your next lampshade project!
Could you help it dry by just putting the lampshade back on and turning the light on?
I don't think there would be enough heat from the lightbulb to affect the dry time much, but you can certainly let it air dry if you have more time than Mary did in this video!
Is there any danger for heat /fire with paint on a lampshade? What if the inside needs paint? thanks so much! I was about to spend over $200 for a new shade!
I think painting the inside would be fine, but I would definitely recommend using an LED bulb that isn't going to get hot.
Hey there from Texas
Hi mary, what brush do ineed to buy to paint my lampshade?
Our oval brushes work beautifully for this! shop.countrychicpaint.com/oval-paint-brush/
Lisa from Maine: What kind of brush are you using and what kind of fabric is the lampshade?
Hi Mary, I just tried this on a lampshade and when I turned the light on it looked blotchy. I did 2 even coats. Any tips to avoid this?
I'm sorry to hear that Judi! It might help to thin the paint down just a little bit and apply it in thinner coats. Or try applying it with a painting sponge instead of a brush.

Hi! Do you recommend a circular chalk paint brush or a wax finish?
No 👁 do not!!!
Hi, thanks for the videos, was wondering if I can paint leather sofa with this paints. Thanks 😊
There are special paints or stains for leather.
So don’t bother trying to mix the mustard and liquorice to get the olive colour, just use one colour on the fabric? That’s great to know I’d only need a sample pot too , thanks for that advice
What kind of paint are you using on is it safe paint for lamps
What kind of paint?
9pm. What material is the shade? Do you need to prime.
I'm not sure what material this one was, but there's no need to prime before painting fabric!
I usually have to painting I bring my items out and let it get for sure it's on the weather if it's hot if it dries very fast
Yes it does - the hotter it is the faster it dries!
I'm in Jamaica not sure if I can get paint ,can I use water base paint instead?
You'll want to be sure to sand and prime and prep carefully before using the water-based paint and add a durable top coat to the finished product!
Hi Mary. From Florida
Hi Mary, thanks for watching!
So did I miss it, what kind of paint is this? Chalk?
Yes! Country Chic Paint is a chalk-based paint.
What kind of paint is that? Is it chalk paint?
Yes! It's chalk style paint by Country Chic Paint.
Do you redo paper shy lamp shade
can we use acrylic
Can a small roller be used in any part of this lamp shade painting?
Yes, definitely. You''ll just want to make sure to check it with the light on for roller lines and even coverage.
My chalk paint soaked threw so now the inside of the shade is all blotchy. I used a dark color. Can you paint the inside of the shade with chalk paint without over heating or cause a hazard?
Yes, you can paint the inside - try using a sponge or adding a little water to the paint to make it easier for even coverage!
When the light is on, this will show up blotchy, I tried it using the same products. Notice she doesn't show finished shade with the light on. Looks great when light is off.
We suggest thinning the paint a bit with water so it goes on more evenly or try applying the paint with a paint sponge instead of a brush.
What safe paint I can use
Hi from Australia

Is that acrylic paint? I didn’t hear you say what type of paint it is.
you don't mention the kind of paint you are using on the lamp shade

Hi from Banning, CA
What paint are you using
Hi Mary,
You mentioned finishing with a wax. Wouldn’t it be sticky?
Hey Cynthia! Once the wax is buffed with a lint free cloth it will be smooth to the touch. Totally optional to seal upholstery or lampshades 😊 ~Mary
