  • In this video I introduce you to my wife Christina who is a super real estate broker but has very little experience around any construction related skills... Her and I have been planning our master bedroom addition for over 2 years and finally have begun and will be bringing you step by step videos, the first several will focus on ICF and lite deck solutions that I obviously prefer anyway but these videos will focus on just how easy these products make it to DIY a project from the ground up! Christina takes my instructions and kills it as she does the lion share of the stacking and bracing with me and then she pours most of the walls with me filming! She did great!

    This is exactly what people need to be told. Obviously people need to have their heads screwed on so as not to be complacent, but there's money to be saved in doing some of the easier parts like the initial stack before maybe using experienced contractors for the more daunting bits.

    I want to start building my home in AZ using ICF within the next 3-6 months. I was able to find a builder in my area who is currently building a house with ICF. I asked him if I could give him some free labor so I could learn. He was nice enough to let me help. I have learned quite a bit. I have help a total of three days on and off including concrete pour day. I witnessed a blow-out and helped repair it. I would highly recommend trying to do the same. I feel more confident about doing my own. Can you do a video on the approximate savings % by doing it yourself as opposed to having somebody do it. I know there are certain variables and it could fluctuate. I really appreciate the content. keep it coming please!!

      Thanks! If you are diy-ing it it’s an absolute no brainer... in a normal market with reasonable lumber this method is more, still worth it... but when u cut labor out with this thst maybe you can’t cut out with stick frame because you need so much more equipment and muscle... it’s starts making even more sense!

    Nice work. I been considering building my house with icf. I am a student of the creators of ICF. They was 2 teachers in Orleans Ontario Canada. At first I was like it will never work.then I saw a few new homes with it.and then it was like hey how much cost the gas bill is here? She said 38$ a month when my bill was 550 for 3 months for x2 the size her place was but she had icf so power outage in winter and a simple 12 candles kept the place nice for 8 hours. It was - 15 c now I know the value

    I have been considering doing an ICF addition on my lake house in PA. I recently had the placed jacked up and an ICF Basement put in and was very impressed with the process until it was finished and a few weeks later I started to have water coming in at the base of the floor in a few areas. Nudura is what was used and they did put in drainage and water proofing. The floor was poured first like in the addition you are doing. Haven’t been able to get the contractor back to look at and fix the problem. Finding reliable and trustworthy contractors these days is ridiculous. I really enjoy your videos and explanations about DIY.

      Does the drain pipe gravity flow to daylight or a pump? If it does that should be a less resistant path than through the cold joint... so wondering if the drain doesn’t have anywhere to go...

    Did you waterproof the outside of the foam or use anything to protect the foam? Have heard and saw some studies on issues with insects and water 💦 filtration from the back fill...

    • @cuttingedgehomes9251
      @cuttingedgehomes9251  3 года назад +1

      I’m using a couple things to “waterproof”, the goal should really be to give the ground water a path to a French drain that’s easier than through your concrete, that’s the basic premise... so first thing I do is put xypex admix into the concrete at the plant to waterproof the concrete from the inside, then in my case I’m going to put dimpled plastic around the whole thing so any water that reaches the icf has an easy path all the way down to the French drain... I’ll show it in a later video!

    • @cuttingedgehomes9251
      @cuttingedgehomes9251  3 года назад

      I don’t worry much about bugs, it’s more of an intelligent landscaping issue, icf puts wood much higher up and harder to get too, but they worry that IF there is an infestation due to vegetation growing on the house or wood stacked right against your house it would be harder to detect or treat... feels to me like people in other industries looking to poke holes in a superior product personally as I’ve been using it heavily for 9 years and I’ve never seen the issue, and I don’t know anybody locally who has...

  • @onjofilms

    So other ICF vids have said not to put ICF underground because termites can tunnel in and you won't know it and they will tunnel up to the rafters. Your take on that?

    • @cuttingedgehomes9251
      @cuttingedgehomes9251  3 года назад

      I have no real opinion on termites, I’ve been using icf since 2013 and have 0 issues, we pretreat, but ultimately termite infestations in my area are always the fault of really poor landscape management... plants of ivy right up on the sides of the house near the sills... wood chips right up against the house ect... The big companies that claim no warranties with termite treatment with icf also void the warranty for any of the above so what’s the warranty really worth to begin with... they really only make the case that they are harder to detect, I would also make the case that they are harder to get since your wood is now 10’ off the ground at roof level instead of 1’ off the ground at the sills... but it really comes down to smart landscaping IMO

  • @techfan166

    How high could you go using that bracing with foxblocks? Can you do a 12 ft wall that you can pour in 1 day?

    • @cuttingedgehomes9251
      @cuttingedgehomes9251  3 года назад +1

      Most icf manufacturers don’t recommend going over 15’ in one pour, but once you have the feel for the mix and the slump and the timing you can easily do more... The tallest single pour I’ve done was 19’, but another guy around here did 23’ with monopour footings! I’ve yet to have a need to try that but it would require some attention to the slump and mix

Since i can get concrete at just above cost I'm building my house with icf next year. • @cuttingedgehomes9251
      @cuttingedgehomes9251  3 года назад +1

      I do, if u slow down the time lapse you will see them, I typically drill and epoxy my pegs because it’s pretty hard to hit the center of an 8” web perfectly, less forgiving than a wide open plywood form in that way...

      @@cuttingedgehomes9251 We just formed and poured an ICF home this week in a tornado prone area. Vertical rebar was in the slab every 18” with a 2nd vertical 8’ rebar inserted every 2’ after the ICF blocks were completed. Horizontal rebar was added one each row of blocks and in each corner. The blocks used separate inside and outside panels with plastic braces added manually (very quick and easy). The location of the vertical rebar was not an issue at all. There were also metal channels that the panels fit into that were attached to the slab and atop the completed walls.

I can’t think of a better way to demonstrate other than doing a project with only my wife, with no specialized tools, and letting her doing the pour portion... I posted a diy pool video a couple weeks ago making the same points, that some things are doable and some aren’t so much... where we might be headed with inflation sweat equity may become a bigger piece of home ownership, so I’m simply making the point that icf gives much more flexibility to cut out some larger labor line items in a budget, if you are so inclined
