That is the Hallmark of all good songs. Especially those regardless of what Pete may say, with a moral. It's the same reason Aesop's Fables live on 3000 years later. The truth tends to remain the truth and until mankind learns to take a lesson from its mistakes they will continue to be true. As well as The Big Three morals. Treat others as you would like to be treated, do not let greed overwhelm your concern for your fellow man be overcome by greed. And do not kill. There is a price to pay for all of these things. Sometimes it's the next day. Sometimes it's 20 years later but you will pay. And those left to make decisions for the money and corporate backing they have the opportunity to pass on the destruction caused by their mistakes, greed and hubris on to all mankind.

I watched this live on TV in early 1968. (I was a high school senior at the time.) Every viewer understood that "the Big Fool" meant our tall Texan president, Lyndon Johnson. A few weeks after this show was broadcast, Sen. Eugene McCarthy, running as an antiwar candidate, gave Johnson a drubbing in the New Hampshire primary and forced LBJ to withdraw from seeking reelection. This was a very courageous performance, but Pete was also expressing what millions of Americans felt at that moment.

Wow. It's Dec 2022. I don't think we have a crop of anti war singers. America and NATO are fighting w the Russians via Ukraine. The Russian boys left their country when the draft was announced. It is a testament to Pete how well this holds up today. It gives me chills to hear it - you can feel the hot crackling anger in his performance. He's really angry. It's mind blowing how all he did was figuratively call LBJ a big fool, and they had to fight to let the network show it.

I was fortunate enough to see Pete play in my high school gym....this would have been about 1966-1967. I think he was playing at a school hoping to teach us about the way of the world.
Seeger's song is a classic cautionary tale that could really be applied to many people and situations. It's interesting that the reaction to Seeger was "We know you're really singing about the Vietnam War." Isn't that an admission of guilt? It's like the old Soviet joke where the protester is holding a blank sign and he's arrested because "We know what you want to say."
Initially, CBS wouldn't allow Seeger to sing this on "THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS COMEDY HOUR" in September 1967 [he was still officially "blacklisted" from performing on commercial TV at the time]. Tom Smothers eventually put enough pressure on the network to finally allow him to sing it in January 1968; this was the first time in 17 years that Pete performed on network television with the freedom to "speak his mind in song"...

This performance was from Pete Seger's 2nd appearance on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. After this received big attention in the press, CBS allowed him to do it the 2nd time around. Check out the DVD "Smothered:The Censorship Struggles Of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour".
it amazes me how things can get so political and ugly in the comment threads of videos on youtube.... why can't we just simply appreciate pete seeger?? happy 90th!
Seeger was brought back to network TV after a 17-year absence by the Smothers Brothers. He had been blacklisted because some said he was a communist. On the first show his Big Muddy performance was cut by CBS, and he only sang a couple of other songs. Towards the end of that 2nd season, he came back and sang Big Muddy, with no objections from CBS; the mood in the country had changed. Two days after this broadcast on the Smothers' show, Cronkite gave his "the war cannot be won" broadcast.
I should add -- for those who haven't figured it out -- that in singing about the "Big Fool" leading the troops deeper into the Big Muddy, Pete was referring to President Lyndon Baines Johnson. I think everyone watching this on TV that Sunday evening in 1968 knew that. (I was 17 at the time and remember watching this performance in amazement.) This was one of many courageous things the Smothers Brothers did on their prime-time show -- the gutsiest thing on TV back then.
Originally Pete did this on the Smothers Brothers in September of '67. CBS censored it but the clamors of support grew so loud for both Pete and the Brothers that CBS relented and rescheduled Seeger. This is from Sunday, February 25th, 1968.
Robert Gillespie Hi Robert, the LBJ Administration may well have had an influence in cancelling the airing of Pete's first appearance in '67. But the fact remains that network did relent and extended the invitation for Seeger to repeat his performance, as documented here in '68. As far as LBJ getting the show cancelled, that's factually incorrect. The Smothers Brothers last show was on June 8th, 1969. LBJ was also out of office by then.
About two weeks after Pete performed this on prime time TV (on the Smothers Brother Comedy Hour), antiwar candidate Eugene McCarthy shocked President Lyndon Johnson (the "Big Fool" in the song) and the country by nearly winning the New Hampshire Presidential Primary.
@redonionjazz - agreed. If you watch the first Smothers Brothers show from their 2nd season, in 1967, you hear Seeger finishing one song with guitar in hand, then barely begin strumming the first few notes of "Big Muddy", then the feed suddenly cuts to a clapping audience shot, then quickly back to him suddenly holding his banjo and launching into a whole different tune.
In the light of this post and comparng to how many other less significant people got the Nobel prize, I wonder why he was not awarded a long time ago!!!!!!!!!
I have a new perspective on this song .... the singer is recounting his days in the military and comes to the realization that his entire military experience has come full circle. I am a veteran of the Cold War, which I thought was over and done with. Yet we have so many who can not wait to enter into the Big Muddy of Ukraine.
It's scary how, year in, year out, this song remains chillingly relevant.

I have a new perspective on this song .... the singer is recounting his days in the military and comes to the realization that his entire military experience has come full circle. I am a veteran of the Cold War, which I thought was over and done with. Yet we have so many who can not wait to enter into the Big Muddy of Ukraine.
