    Baffles me how you can even do that on ice. Its hard enough to get upwards movement on solid ground let alone on ice in skates, freakin props to ashley and awesome video laci

      Honestly Figure Skating backflips seem relatively easy to me. If you can backflip on a slippery surface then you can probably do it, whether you're moving or not doesn't change much. It's probably only rare because it's pretty dangerous to learn and not worth it since it's illegal in competition anyway.

    • @Klatski
      @Klatski 10 лет назад +1

      raydredX And you're assuming everyone here knows how to do a normal backflip on the easiest surface...?

    • @raydredX
      @raydredX 10 лет назад

      I said it's relatively easy. Anyone not so old, who is not unfit and most important: who can control their fear, can learn to backflip very easily.
      Any figure skating athlete willing to put in some effort should fit the bill.

    • @Klatski
      @Klatski 10 лет назад

      raydredX Oh. Well I just googled the word relatively, so sorry about that. Didn't know!
      But I actually meant that as in NOT skating. I can't do a flip, no matter what. Last time I tried, I was sent to the hospital for 2 weeks because I broke my back.
      I have horrible balance, and I have extreme fear. If I'm left alone, creeps me out. If two or three people there, it feels like the room is too big and it creeps me out. Ten or more people, I get scared a lot, because I fear they are humans.

    Wow back-flip on ice. Mildly terrifying to watch. I don't get how people do that consistently. There is a good chance that eventually you will fall and then luck takes over to decide how bad you land. Gives me the chills watching it.

    • @xxhellspawnedxx
      @xxhellspawnedxx 10 лет назад +2

      It's not a tool as such though, but a resulting motion in ballistic flights i.e. anything that jumps or is tossed or fired and doesn't have any extra propulsion. Rockets, for instance, due to being powered through their flight, does not follow a parabolic trajectory. But a bullet does.

    • @sockmaster2718
      @sockmaster2718 10 лет назад +2

      Yes! Mathematical modeling is what we use to figure out how the universe works! Schools here in the U.S. just do a horrible job of teaching math, so nobody knows why it's so awesome...and that's coming from a math teacher.

    • @bcthoburn
      @bcthoburn 6 лет назад

      Their image of a parabola looked more like an ellipse :( still though conic sections have many applications, a fair number of which you’re taught in school. Unfortunately, I think the problem is that they don’t teach it abstractly enough, and they teach those examples like they’re the ONLY applications. I think they shouldn’t teach applications at all, it messes up the the pure logic of math. Leave it to the scientists for that.

    The principles of torque are being observe in figure skating in additional the relationship of surface area to friction and pressure, that is why the blade is thin less surface area less friction yet more pressure is being exerted to the floor.
    Physics is indeed life

  • @Altoclarinets
    @Altoclarinets 7 лет назад +3

    This video forgets to mention the most important bit of physics that makes ice skating possible- because ice melts under high pressure, concentrating the body weight onto the surface area of a tiny blade allows the blade to carve the ice and glide!

    You didn't explain the number one mystery of skating, which is how they keep spinning even after the original momentum has waned. I realize that pulling arms in increases velocity but how do they maintain it? They're not pushing against the ice for energy, so how can they keep spinning so long? Similar question for divers who are able to twist their bodies in mid-air. What are they pushing against?
