Baffles me how you can even do that on ice. Its hard enough to get upwards movement on solid ground let alone on ice in skates, freakin props to ashley and awesome video laci
Honestly Figure Skating backflips seem relatively easy to me. If you can backflip on a slippery surface then you can probably do it, whether you're moving or not doesn't change much. It's probably only rare because it's pretty dangerous to learn and not worth it since it's illegal in competition anyway.
I said it's relatively easy. Anyone not so old, who is not unfit and most important: who can control their fear, can learn to backflip very easily. Any figure skating athlete willing to put in some effort should fit the bill.
raydredX Oh. Well I just googled the word relatively, so sorry about that. Didn't know! But I actually meant that as in NOT skating. I can't do a flip, no matter what. Last time I tried, I was sent to the hospital for 2 weeks because I broke my back. I have horrible balance, and I have extreme fear. If I'm left alone, creeps me out. If two or three people there, it feels like the room is too big and it creeps me out. Ten or more people, I get scared a lot, because I fear they are humans.
I'm a grade 9 figure skater..and This video makes me look like a simple beginner. I feel so basic now!! OMG a backflip on ICE on a BLADE are you KIDDING ME?!! Amazing😩👍🙈💜
***** I think the point he was making was that they are ripped and those who make fun of them are probably sitting behind their monitor with a belly twice the size of them.
And they are actually just, you know, talented????? I guess lifting up and tossing girls into the air, doing push ups on the ice and all that training pays off in multiple ways.
Wow back-flip on ice. Mildly terrifying to watch. I don't get how people do that consistently. There is a good chance that eventually you will fall and then luck takes over to decide how bad you land. Gives me the chills watching it.
I can backflip on ice, and I'm only 12. I did fall once and I broke my wrist. But I still love doing it. I was 10 win I fell. I can also do a back aerial on ice
this makes me miss skating so much! i was a competitive skater till i was 18. they i went to school but hopefully i can get my coach certification soon so i can make other kids love this sport as much as i do!
It's not a tool as such though, but a resulting motion in ballistic flights i.e. anything that jumps or is tossed or fired and doesn't have any extra propulsion. Rockets, for instance, due to being powered through their flight, does not follow a parabolic trajectory. But a bullet does.
Yes! Mathematical modeling is what we use to figure out how the universe works! Schools here in the U.S. just do a horrible job of teaching math, so nobody knows why it's so awesome...and that's coming from a math teacher.
Their image of a parabola looked more like an ellipse :( still though conic sections have many applications, a fair number of which you’re taught in school. Unfortunately, I think the problem is that they don’t teach it abstractly enough, and they teach those examples like they’re the ONLY applications. I think they shouldn’t teach applications at all, it messes up the the pure logic of math. Leave it to the scientists for that.
The principles of torque are being observe in figure skating in additional the relationship of surface area to friction and pressure, that is why the blade is thin less surface area less friction yet more pressure is being exerted to the floor. Physics is indeed life
This video forgets to mention the most important bit of physics that makes ice skating possible- because ice melts under high pressure, concentrating the body weight onto the surface area of a tiny blade allows the blade to carve the ice and glide!
Me and the family just went ice skating in London on New Year's Eve, it was awesome! Second time only I've ever skated, but I was holding the camera and making videos. I obviously can't do any moves, but it's a great workout and feels good when you don't have to hold on to any edges.
Learning physics through skating. Very interesting and good job Laci on the video! I haven't been to Yerba Buena in a while. I am not a fan of ice skating, but watching figure skating is awesome. THAT BACKFLIP. :O
You didn't explain the number one mystery of skating, which is how they keep spinning even after the original momentum has waned. I realize that pulling arms in increases velocity but how do they maintain it? They're not pushing against the ice for energy, so how can they keep spinning so long? Similar question for divers who are able to twist their bodies in mid-air. What are they pushing against?
yeah but they are very uncommon here, maybe because it costs more that usual? we also have one were the floor is actually some kind of wax (doesn't require any cooling) but it's horrible and disgusting :S
Yeah seriously it feels like you have soap taped to your feet and the whole world is wet and everything is just a horrifying nightmare that slips and slides out of control. So people who can skate are basically supernatural creatures.
If y’all thought this backflip was impressive, you should check out the one foot backflip on ice… no one else has been able to replicate it since then…
Really? That's a shame. Surely someone would not go the back flip without actually mastering it in practice. I guess coming down on ice with ur head/neck would easily kill a few ppl. Thanks for your answer Federico.
That back flip was amazing, but the way she stopped at 3:45 was like magic.
Baffles me how you can even do that on ice. Its hard enough to get upwards movement on solid ground let alone on ice in skates, freakin props to ashley and awesome video laci
The toe pick on the front of the blade helps

raydredX And you're assuming everyone here knows how to do a normal backflip on the easiest surface...?
I said it's relatively easy. Anyone not so old, who is not unfit and most important: who can control their fear, can learn to backflip very easily.
Any figure skating athlete willing to put in some effort should fit the bill.

*****
Dat encouragement.
Great pep talk!
***** That was terrible of you.
What level are you in? I'm in Freeskate 1
One of the coaches at my rink will sometimes just do a backflip suddenly and the first time he did one I was so shocked
I like how the people who are most likely to make fun of male figure skaters are also the ones who don't realise how FUCKING RIPPED THEY ARE.
***** Yes, it seems you've mastered the art of deciphering implications. This is an ability that humans got from aliens of course.
***** I think the point he was making was that they are ripped and those who make fun of them are probably sitting behind their monitor with a belly twice the size of them.

Mara Wright Not all men lift girls in the air, some of them skate solo
is it just me, or i dont really like female skating, and i really only like male skating?
That back flip though

Ha how have I not seen this? I skate at that rink. Don is an awesome coach (and so are the other Yerba Buena coaches), even with adults.
I'm a competitive skater and I understood everything until she did the backflip.. That was epic..
so there is a real life use for parabolas?!.... well this is awkward (sorry math teachers)
There are lot of "abstract" things where are real life uses. We just are not told about them. (I hate the school system)

Dat back flip tho :D
when i skate i just shuffle around with a chair
The graphics were a nice added touch in helping to understand what was talked about.
After she did the back flip I couldn't close my mouth for solid 20 seconds
backflip on ice shit i can't even do backflip lol
Did Laci just ask "what is a projectile..."
This reminds me of "Ice Princess" 😂😂
I like the way she skated by at the end... that extra bit of fun always produces a smile.
They should start allowing backflips in the Olympics again.
I'm glad i took physics and understood everything he said
I like how they did this episode. I'm not saying change every episode of Dnews to a practical one, but it would be great to see more of these ones!
I cant help but smile when I see Laci. she's awesome :D

Brains and beauty. Laci just has it all.

This was actually awesome, and Laci, you look beautiful.
yaaaay laci is back
Laci is so smart ^-^
Great video, Laci is great!
Ashley Clark!!! Dang girl you look great and your jumps looked really good... backflip has MEGA improved since D20 days!!! Impressive missy!!
I have now mastered more physics (dynamics) hopefully will stay at Nat5 b/c
Why does everyone hate Laci so much? I think she is awesome.
so cool to see laci!!
the flip is so cool!!!
I love ice skating! And I already knew the physics behind it because I became intrigued after watching that movie... Ice princess was it?
i liked 2:00 when she asks something that we can take as reaaally obvious but she considers someone who doesn't creating wonder on other people's mind
All the moves and the explanations are awesome but OMGTHATBACKFLIP!!! 😍😍😍😍👏👏👏👏👏👏
Ahh I love the Yurba Bueana gardens! That backflip was amazing. Thanks for the cool episode, Lacy and DNews crew (and skaters!) :)
That back flip tho
Laci you are so good for your first time!
that backflip looked amazing! great video!
Learning physics through skating. Very interesting and good job Laci on the video! I haven't been to Yerba Buena in a while. I am not a fan of ice skating, but watching figure skating is awesome. THAT BACKFLIP. :O
This was really neat. I'm having a hard time remembering the last time you guys did something out of the studio.
Skating... with science!!!!
Laci on ice still hotter than the fatshaming a-holes. And science FTW! \m/
I'm all for fatshaming if they're just lazyfat. But she isn't even a little fat so I have no idea what you're talking about...
Shame on me for thinking she's hot. :-o
I know Ashley, she lives in Sun Valley Idaho where I train now I get to see her everyday and I've even taken a few lessons from her❤🤗
Ice scating and back flipping? I need talent...
Ice skating... Ice scating is... Well, crappy to say the least :x
Laci! You're my fav DNews anchor :D I lurv you!!
I actually use this conservation of momentum for this homemade kick i made. My friends did agree it was kinda fast
Is he an ice skating coach AND a physicist? O_O
well if your gonna be a coach, you better know how stuff works.
Im an ice skating coach, not a physicist! Wait thats not right...
Ryan Kelley do you at least have an understanding on why things do what they do?
It was a reference to star trek idiot...
Ryan Kelley wow calling somebody idiot for not getting a reference
Figure skaters by day, Physics professors by night... these people are rad.
Thanks guy, I was planing to go ice skating today. :)
That was an amazing back flip!
These comments. Stay classy, youtube.
Laci
I would love to see figure skating and sword fighting combined, now that would be a sport worth watching
Fucking dangerous though!
So... Hockey?
I would totally die if I tried to do a jump on skates..

These people make everything look sooo easy...
I watched this while the Figure Skating is on!
Wow this makes me really interested in physics! I would have loved to see this in my physics class *cough cough* any physics teachers out there?
.. I knew only about the rotational moment part . now I know there is quite a bit more .
That backflip scared the hell out of me
Lol All of these comments about Laci... She pretty cool and knowledgeable, but these comments are ridiculous XD
I figure skate and I love jumping, but it's pretty hard.
And I broke my arm last week when I was jumping 2 Loop. Great.
Why is there so much hate in the comments? Why aren't there more people talking about that crazy fucking backflip??
I had a tiny sciencegasm
very good information
go go go
girl
like u
This video made me want to learn more Ice Skating tricks :D
Sadly I live in a desert with a silly river in the middle :(
You know that there are these things called indoor rinks, right?
yeah but they are very uncommon here, maybe because it costs more that usual?
we also have one were the floor is actually some kind of wax (doesn't require any cooling) but it's horrible and disgusting :S
Laci is so gorgeous
lmao i believe you
Is no one talking about Chiara's incredible spirals?!
Tht backflip was incredible
MAGIC.
I wanna do it seems fun
Hell Yeah on that back flip!
awesome!!!
Those women and that man are so graceful on ice. Then there's me who falls on my ass the second my skates touch the ice, lol.
Ice Skating, one thing I always suck at. Laci did much better then me.
I was hoping they went into how this strengthens the body. I bet they have great core strength.
+ugenewis they do
I tried ice skating once. It was horrible.
***** *puts sign up:* Please do not feed the trolls.
Yeah seriously it feels like you have soap taped to your feet and the whole world is wet and everything is just a horrifying nightmare that slips and slides out of control. So people who can skate are basically supernatural creatures.
@@tinybirdbigfeelings no its called practice we are not super natural we just dont give up and if we fall we get back up
OMFG it scares me, I don't wanna die
yOU CAN DO A BACKFLIP ON ICE LANSDFKBSDF
Ahem. Nice.
I didn't think I'd be this interested in physics, hehe. Nice presentation!
But why is backflips banned in ice skating?
Getting those Ice Princess feels~
Im thinking of doing some ice skating to improve my tae kwon do skills
If y’all thought this backflip was impressive, you should check out the one foot backflip on ice… no one else has been able to replicate it since then…
Figure Skaters have the force confirmed
Why is the backflip not allowed in competition?
Dangerous.
Really? That's a shame. Surely someone would not go the back flip without actually mastering it in practice. I guess coming down on ice with ur head/neck would easily kill a few ppl.
Thanks for your answer Federico.
;)
Federico Spadone guess we should ban life then
I am not saying I agree with that decision ;) I'm pro risk!
Imagine newton talking to a figure skater. "Lemme tell ya how your sport works"
What the...I'm going ice skating right now lol! This video is great though!
Smile...this is entertaining to watch.
Oh I know Dawn :O I skate at that rink :DDD
Laci needs to do one on the Physics of the HOT TUB! From in the tub! No goggles. No bathing cap! No water wings!
I wanna do that!!!
I nearly had a heart-attack when she did that flip!! No wonder it's an illegal move in competitive skating!!
It's Laci On ICE =0D
wait what
laci green talking about... physics?
IN WHAT UNIVERSE AM I?!!!!!!!!
WYR take a punch to the face by a professional boxer OR have to do one of those backflips on skates?
That backflip!
