Fabulous collection of the jumping off ice sequences. For great skaters this is the secret to more accurate jumps. Sports science says these exercises are priming the muscles range of motion with strength, breath, coordination, flow and precision as well as the mental training.
This is a great video for those like me who have no idea what jumps are all about. Until now they all looked to me like the same spins in the air. Now that I see this video I see that there are different ways to take off and use the feet & blades of the skates. Neat!
Bing Sun you cant ‘figure out’ how to do a double, its not a puzzle. You have to practice it consistently and for quite a while before you can manage two revolutions
I used to do this floor exercise and then the long stretches in the evening. It just makes sense to practice jumps on the floor before you start on the ice.
Hi! We love your exercices. Do you think that this video, combined with your stretching, power and core videos are enough to maintain an athletes ability during this quarantined period? Thank you!!
absolutely, it's what I am doing with my athletes right now as well! Some of it is a little updated, but most of it remained the same, and has been the same since I skated 20 years ago. :) Good luck and stay safe!
I have been looking for this kind of off ice practice for ages. For sharing them. I sprained my ankle at moment. But I'll be sure to try them out once my foot is healed:) thanks
Thank you so much.... It's such an amazing video and progresses one step at a time. I can jump a single loop but not yet a double loop. Could you please suggest how to progress from a single to a double loop?
Can someone tell me why,/the benefits of doing it the other way. If I don’t know why, I typically will blow it off, I can see how it could create balance, and help with wanting to rotate the other way during footwork, but what about muscle memory and rotating the right way to land your jumps?
How long did it take you to learn all these jumps? And did you try them on ice first, and simply practice them off-ice, or did you test out/practice the jumps off-ice first before going onto the ice? Thanks! Also, quick question, did you learn these with a private instructor, or are they self-taught? Thank you so much!
This is one of the most useful videos on youtube! Thank you, this is great!! I struggle with leaning to one side once I jump and then falling over to that side when I land. How can this be fixed?
Its a great video and I have done many of the exercises! Sadly I recently hurt my ankle doing a practice axel. Normally I land them just fine but something happened, I hesitated and landed to the side and it appears I got a nice sprain. I wonder if there are any recommendations as to the type of shoes to wear.
@@keji3414 I've been skating for 7 years (14 now) and I used to have a double toe. But then middle school came and I forgot how to get double rotation haha;)
Thanks for post te video. My Sister and i pratice everyday with some of yours exercise. I still cant do a perfect double rotation but i will. Thanks ( sorry forma My grammar, i real y speak spanish ando learn later english)
Rotation is all about MOMENTUM - so the technique you are applying PHYSICS - so your own physical attributes, such as your centre of gravity, length of extremities etc. and POWER - so the strength you have to produce heigth, to iniciate spin and the tension in the air to hold your extremities in. If you want to improve on your rotations the only thing I can give you as advise is to practcie, practice, practcie. Incorperate Rotation practcie in your daily routine, and build up on your strength as much as possible parallel to that.
Start with the simple stuff, the two foot jumps, thrones started out on one foot, but with minimal rotation. Do not go up onto higher levels, before you don't feel certain of what you doing. Be observant, download it if you can, and play it in slow motion, observing core, shoulders and arms, hip and legs. Record yourself and analyze and compare :) Again everything with minimum rotation. you can also do walk-throughs: meaning you don't jump, you execute a movement in slow motion until you understand what you need to be doing. Oh and last but not least... most skater learn all these with instructors, they print-out the mistakes, they walk you through it. They make sure you don't learn false movements that you have a hard time correcting later. So I do recommend a coach. Good luck!
Quick question: is the last pull up of the leg needed or is just to fall in one foot and make the jump end nice? not sure if it is needed for physical reasons or for aesthetics. Thanks!
Author Erica R. Stinson best of luck to her! I hope she learns quickly, remind her not to get discouraged as skating is a hard sport that requires alot of dedication and self patience
I want to learn figure skating but I can’t so I want to practice some figure skating skills at my house. Do you recommend me learning jumps by meself? Cause I want to do at least double jump on off ice. Will I make bad habits if I self taught figure skating jump?
I can feel my butt cramping just by watching this video. 😭 no wonder figure skaters got amazing cabooses 😜 anyway amazing video by the way! I got new insight of how figure skaters train!

When I was young I could easily do double jumps, but in my 50s, I barely hit 1 ⅓ rotation (of ice).
i am an ice skater trying doubles and i can't quite rotate fast enough?? any tips
pls teach me how to rotate faster
Rotation is all about
MOMENTUM - so the technique you are applying
PHYSICS - so your own physical attributes, such as your centre of gravity, length of extremities etc.
and POWER - so the strength you have to produce heigth, to iniciate spin and the tension in the air to hold your extremities in.
