  • Craig Dostie is back for his first edition of Dostie's View for the 2022-23 Telemark ski season!
This week Craig goes back to the deep well that is Telemark boots and the discussion surrounding whether or not we will ever see a new Telemark boot on the market. He's not holding his breath any longer and decided to take matters into his own hands.
In this episode Craig walks us through his own Telemark modification of a Scarpa F1 alpine touring boot (with a bellow) with a Michael Bolt-On Duckbutt. According to the manufacturer of the Bolt-On: Bolt this duckbutt on to the sole of your ski boots to enable the boots to be used with NTN-style telemark bindings. The ideal boots for this are the Scarpa F3 and F1 variants with toe bellows.

This is an experimental part, and the user assumes all risk when installing and using said part. Designer and manufacturer make no claims or guarantees about its integrity, durability, compatibility, or ease of installation. May require sanding for optimum fit. Sanding removes processed finish.
About: Craig Dostie is truly a pioneer of backcountry and telemark media. He was the founder and Editor-in-Chief of Couloir Magazine from 1988 until 2007. His publishing company at the time also created Telemark Skier Magazine in 2003. He has contributed to countless articles on the subject of backcountry & telemark skiing and is the one that coined the term EARN YOUR TURNS. He’s a true legend of Telemark.

Hell yea! Another data point here - I ski a pair of heavily modified Scarpa F1 with a TTS system and def suggest the F1 for a variety of setups. There's a great community of people that mod them (they were also heavily modded by gram counters when they were a top of the line skimo boot), and you can totally dial in your desired flex.
    Personal mod list:
    - Replaced instep strap with dyneema cord (was broken when I got them)
    - Replaced heel lever wire with dyneema cord
    - thinner liner (from another pair of boots)
    - shaved off some rubber from the bottom for both weight and flex reasons
    - Aftermarket "new style" F1 lever (helps the TTS fit better + less weight)
    - Voile strap "ski strap" (always good to have extras, easier to clamp down on than velcro)
    - Ground down a bittt of the inner cuff for extended ROM
I can ski them either with our without the front grey plastic snow cover depending on the tour/conditions. This is really the only way that I've found to get a ski that is competitive with modern touring setups both on the up and the down. Have them mounted on a lighter touring ski, and its been great both for resort laps as well as bigger springtime missions.

Awesome to see someone take things into their own hands to get the boot that they want to be able to ski this season. Never would have thought about making some franken-tele boots myself, really cool to see how they came together. I keep hoping to find a good all around used 75mm boot to purchase (I got some used T1's as that was all I could get a hold of in my size but they're going to be more boot than I need most of the time).

Glad you liked the video! Thanks for the note. Might want to see if you can track down some T2 Eco boots - sounds like that might be more what you are looking for. cheers - Madsen

I been mulling over the Frankensteinification of tele boots for a while now so this was a very interesting presentation. Thankyou Dostie, thought provoking as always.

I've been a huge fan of my F1 MBs. And for the backcountry I think they ski great. They were plenty stiff enough for my taste to ski a 14er on late season corn. A re-release of the F1 Carbons/F1s and a TX pro with a Grilamid cuff would probably scratch the itch for most of the market.

Thanks for the update. Depressing to hear the new NTN- tech boots from Scarpa aren't going to be any lighter. Swing-and-a-miss.
I guess I'll keep my eyes pealed for some old F1s, or hack my TX Pros, but that seems like a lot of work to save just one lousy pound. Sigh....
P.S. Glad I'm not the only one who skis in "walk mode".

The TX pro mod was a pretty noticeable difference in weight and range of motion. I would personally recommend the project. It definitely changes the flex of the boot though.

@EarnYourTurns thanks for the clarification. There are Pebax AT boots out there which weigh significantly less than the TX Pro (LaSportiva Vanguard for example is 800g less per pair). Must be a thinner shell. I wonder why Scarpa didn’t go for the low-hanging fruit and just put Maestrale cuffs on the TX-pro lower, with a maybe a single-buckle Boa closure + a power strap on the cuff. That alone would lose a pound or so and increase ROM significantly. No new tooling, very little R&D, and preserve the TX flex. Call it the “TX Tour”. As it is, there is little to differentiate between the Comp and Pro except tech inserts for the most part.
I guess this is what happens when there’s no competition in the marketplace.

      @georgeweisnicht6820 Год назад +1

@@Beacon.Shovel.Bearspray The Maestrale 2.0 cuff and added the maestrale liner as well. It increased ROM substantially and she’d about a lb off the pair I think. Most of the gain was rear ROM. but still a big change. It also stiffened the boot as a whole so I ski a little more upright than before.
Also the standard F1s i’ve got held up great on my lynx but they are on an 85mm waist ski. I haven’t had the opportunity to ride my meidjo/qst 99s yet so idk how they do on wider skis.

Good thing we're not holding our breath for Scarpa, right? Until that day, I just try and avoid picking up any of my friends feather-light AT boots or playing with toys at the candy store. And so nice to know I'm not the only person who normally descends in walk mode.

In the tradition of telemark hacks, this must be one of the all time greats. Now, wouldn't it be awesome if we could just 3D print a complete boot shell!
