I remember first encountering C. S. Lewis' speech to WW2 soldiers ("The Weight of Glory"). He said something similar, in summary, that, while we may be asked to neutralize the enemy, we are never asked to hate them.
Dear Rabbi Joe, I want to thank you so much for sharing so many wonderful messages. I just discovered you tonight and watched several of your videos. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints currently living in Bethlehem Palestine, I began crying when I saw you flipping through the pages of your Book of Mormon teaching all of us in a way that only a Jew could. I don’t exactly know what I experienced but it was profound. I feel like I saw prophecy being fulfilled through you. I have had many sacred experiences in this Holy Land and now consider being in Bethlehem (originally land for the tribe of Judah) being taught by a Jew in America tonight one of them. Thank you from my heart. Shalom
I appreciate recognizing that life is a series of battles like it was in Book of Mormon times. We aren't so very different from our ancient brothers and sisters. The reminder to not harden hearts despite the difficulties was meaningful.
"Liken the scriptures unto yourself." I'm pretty sure I butchered that classical LDS church phrase a little but essentially that is what this good pastor is saying. 😊
I am so grateful that you were able to experience the real and meaningful dimension of scripture, which is always available to us, when we are truly present
Thank you so much. I love watching these clips. I know what you mean about grieving Alma Rabbi. Each time a book ends and a Prophet exits, I feel sad and miss them. I have so much love and respect for them because I got to know them personally. I see how good they are and how much work they put into helping others. I am happy to read and re-read Alma's words again and again. One of the beautiful things I love about the scriptures is that there is never really a goodbye. That's just the way I see it. Thank you ❤
Thank you Rabbi. In todays world I become afraid and angry at the evil I see. I am grateful for this opportunity to set my heart on peace. Peace in my life and peace in the world. Your thoughts will help me going forward. I know we must resist evil but not let fear and anger make us evil in our hearts or deeds. I have much to think about and hopefully somethings to do also.
Rabbi Joe, I love your exceptionally instructive insights. I look forward to hearing your thoughts each week because, although I have read The Book of Mormon from my childhood, you have opened my eyes to truly appreciate the simplicity and beauty that I often overlook because I'm so familiar with the narrative.
Toda raba rabbi Joe. This message was an answer to a prayer. I'm in a personal battle now that has been exceedingly long and over time as Alma and you have insightfully taught, have hardened me unwillingly. Yet, I have continued to hope for a softening in me and the person I love deeply. We have weathered many storms together, but also have had many conflicts with each other. I have a love for the prophet Alma that has deepened even further today from this gift of wisdom that he has given us, a lifeline to help us see more clearly the way to retain our humanity, to not forget the divine spark within us and within our "enemies". Even those we love. I feel inspired to make a covenant of peace today with the person I have hurt. I know it doesn't make life easier, but I feel hope that the Lord, blessed be He, wants peace for me and for those I love. I have to trust in the promise that through the lessons of those gone before us, I can receive strength to forge ahead with faith in the One who watches over us with great love and concern for our well-being. Beautiful session. Shalom
Thank you so much Rabbi Joe. You open my heart to a depth of the gospel that is I feel the most important in this life. Humility and kindness despite the desperation of the evils of war and inner strife.
I am learning so much from Rabbi Joe! Rabbi Joe, thank you so much for giving so freely of your time and learning. It opens up even more spirit of the Book of Mormon and knowledge. Thank you Scripture Central, thank you Rabbi Joe!❤
Thank you so much, Rabbi Joe. These segments with you are becoming my favorite thing on social media. You bring such a wise, kind spirit to our holy writ. Thank you for the blessing that you are to us. ❤
Gosto de pensar nas fortificaçoes das cidades fazenda o inimigo retroagir. Sempre oro com meu filho de 15, pedimos sempre proteção na ida ena volta para o lar e os animais e nossa ataláia dos convênios do Senhor. ❤
15:30 he most likely didn't do it intentionally, but I find it interesting that he says "keep the presence of God with us" since "God with us" could be translated as Emmanuel. It fits perfectly for a saint to keep the presence of Jesus.
Dear Rabbi Joe, you look like my dad, but you smile a lot bigger. He always had a calm smile on his face. But he also had a heavy heart from war. He was filled with compassion and never lied or cheated at anything. He always told us to live every moment as if doing it in the presence of G-d. And I have tried my best to live that.
I love Rabbi Joe's insights. I'm finding this series very captivating. I would be very curious to hear Rabbi's thoughts on some of the chapters in 2 Nephi.
This man talking inspires me. Is this Jewish man a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints? What a great man. I felt the Spirit. With fond regards brother Powers
He’s not. He’s quite simply an open-minded Jewish rabbi who appreciates truths wherever he finds them. He puts it very well: “I’m grateful that these words exist.”
Bless you, Brother Powers, for your kind words. I am not a member of the church. I am actually a Jewish Rabbi. But please know that I am a friend of your church, who honors and respects the beauty and the light that your faith community brings into the world
@@joecharnes2454Thank you Rabbi Joe for your time and for your insights. They have touched the hearts of me and my daughter and enlightened us new and powerful views of our scriptures.
I love: 2 Nephi 2:2 "The Lord shall consecrate thine afflictions for thy gain" It will help us to feel more love and empathy for others who suffer, it will help us to become more Christlike.
@@joecharnes2454 Also a Covenantal commitment (from our side): See Mosiah 18:9 "To be willing to mourn with those that mourn, and to comfort those that stand in need of comfort. To stand as witnesses of God, at all times, in all things, and in all places.
Rabbi I saw appreciate your video since I started it is it replaced my heart I have Parkinson’s and sometimes when I lose I want to do a daily activity. Ok, reading about your circumstances made me cry. In both love, life and the suffering The Atonement of Our Savior means for all of us. I don't know b you, that doesn't stop me from saying many people & Angels love you! 13:53
Thank you for your interest. This was the last podcast, for now. We are discussing other program options that hopefully will be coming forth soon. Take care.
What we should keep in mind about these pacifists is that they had converted from a lifestyle that was pretty much based on casual murder and disregard for human life. They came to be so repulsed by their former culture that they felt the compelling need to reject it completely.
