    ADHDers NEED some type of schedule which so many of us HATE schedules but having ONE simple thing like an alarm that goes off at 8am, 12pm, 3pm, and 7pm telling us to eat a snack/meal HELPS HUGELY for long term wellness inside and out. Less burnout, less extreme fatigue after a hyperfixation, less binging, better body image because there are less extremes of eating a lot/not eating.

    Yours was the first video that made me realize intuitive eating isn't for me. For the longest time, I thought maybe I am not listening to my body "properly" because all my body wanted to eat was potato chips. But now I have been following a good and healthy diet and it has made SUCH A HUGE impact on my physical and mental health.
    Also, keep doing these sit-down and talk videos. I have been loving these.

      I think you might be able to do intuitive eating after you've been "on" a good and healthy diet for quite some time and have learned to differentiate between hunger and a craving or emotional hunger, so if a need for potato chips would come up you would either know it's come kinda emotional need that needs to be fulfilled and not really a nutritional/hunger one, or you'd know how to have a small portion of chips just for the flavor of it and know when to stop and know that the majority of your diet isn't to be composed of potato chips. :)

    I can relate to feeling like we all live in a very stressful world that is highly fixated on productivity and achievements. Especially as a professional dancer for 14 years who competed overseas, I never had a moment to actually think about what my body truly needed.

    Kind of related to something you said, I know people "shouldn't" weigh themselves if they have a past with EDs, but I actually weigh myself daily to keep my weight UP. If I don't weigh myself, I assume I'm gaining more weight and eat less...not good. I like where my weight has been for years and don't want to gain, but I also know I cannot afford to lose any. And, sometimes I make myself eat a meal when I'm really not terribly hungry. Not always being able trust what your body says is what some of us have to do.

    I cannot agree more that social media has the ability to stop you from living. I too experienced this for about 4-5 years, where I ran a vegan lifestyle blog and a couple of Instagram accounts to support. Running the blog itself didn’t have a negative impact on my perception of life, but I think social media did. That’s not to say you can’t enjoy social media in moderation or run a successful social media account and still be happy - BUT it all comes down to having a life OUTSIDE of social media like Miles said.
    For those few years I was so caught up in the likes and the followers and the “engagement”; I did things just so I could share them; whenever I was spending time with loved ones I would be wondering how I could make a piece of content out of it. When I didn’t post regularly I felt guilty and when I did post regularly it sapped all my time and energy and I was always stressing about how I would keep up the expected amount of content (that I thought others wanted) alongside my full time job.
    In July 2021 I decided to take what was supposed to be a couple of months’ break from the whole thing. I went back to living my life like it was the 90s - messaging/calling people directly when I wanted to catch up with them; doing things simply because they were fun and interesting (not because of how they’d look online) and being fully present in the actual moments of my life (the fun, the mundane, the hard parts, the insignificant parts, all of it). It was glorious. I felt almost brought back to life in a way, and have learned that my self worth has nothing to do with the two-dimensional life I might create for myself online. Life is meant to be messy and chaotic and doesn’t always fit perfectly into the social media grid. RELISH IT. Embrace it. Think back to when you were a kid - did you care about how anything looked, or what anybody thought? No, you just Wanted to be happy and have fun. That’s the kind of mantra I try to uphold in my daily life now.
    Fast forward to today, I still haven’t returned to my social media account fully, even though I would like to. And I only check Instagram a couple times a week for a few moments at a time (down from when I would scroll hours a day). I’m having too much fun without it, though my goal is to find a way that I can run my blog and Instagram account without getting sucked into the disreality (yes I made that word up) of it all. I think Miles seems to have it down perfectly, and I would love any tips from him on how to use social media effectively and sparingly without letting it take over our lives. Miles, if your reading this, maybe a video idea?! 😂
    ANYWAY. Anybody else who’s been through this, I would love to hear your stories/thoughts. I think social media is like video games and alcohol and junk food - best used sparingly, a little at a time, and definitely not as the sole source of calories/fulfilment/purpose/income.

    Wow, I appreciate this video so much. I too could never just intuitively eat and always felt like I was doing something wrong or wasn't far enough in my recovery (from an ed) because I had to put things in place to make sure I ate and ate the things I needed to eat (aka healthy foods). Thanks for sharing so freely and honestly! Your voice is appreciated in this space!

    • @Elena-pq8yp
      @Elena-pq8yp Год назад +1

      When you’re in early recovery from an ED you can’t trust your hunger cues so you will most likely have to go through a period of ‘mechanical eating’ (eating even when you’re not hungry) to be able to regain your body’s trust.. I know it’s hard but it’s so necessary if you want to fully recover x

    • @frankie9953
      @frankie9953 Год назад

      @@Elena-pq8yp definitely agree, but even 9 years in, I still have things in place. It's very easy for me to get distracted and forget to eat, so having a set time when I need to eat is what works for me. Also, having go-to meals that I know are nourishing and healthy in my rotation is helpful. Recovery is so nuanced and looks different for every person. I don't actually believe in "full recovery" or "fully recovered." I think it is a lifelong process/journey. I do think we can get to a place where our lives aren't ruled by our eating disorder, it is not causing us harm and the mental space has been cleared away but I think it will always be there. Just my opinion.

    • @Elena-pq8yp
      @Elena-pq8yp Год назад +1

      @@frankie9953 I’m glad to hear you have a structure in place to help you.
      hmm I’m not sure.. what is ‘fully recovered’ anyway? Maybe it differs from person to person but I would say if it’s not hindering your life in any way (health/career/relationships) - that comes close enough.. I think that many people may continue to have the negative thoughts pop up but it’s a matter of not acting on them..
      Sending love and strength x

    Miles, I just love your videos soo much. I feel like you are the only one who actually understands the reason why our intuitive behaviour would not probably be the healthiest option in modern life. I also struggle with adhd, so for me it is even more unrealistic and every time I tried to listen my intuition, it always had negative impact on both my physical and mental health.

    Hey Miles! I love your videos and have been watching them for quite some time. I’ve incorporated a lot of what I’ve learned from you but had never gone fully plant based. However I was just diagnosed with lipedema and standard of care includes a low fat, low carb, plant based anti inflammatory diet (Rare Adipose Disorder diet). So I think this will be the year I finally go entirely plant based and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you taking the time to make these videos for us! They’ve been a good resource for me and I don’t feel nearly as overwhelmed as I know I would be without them! Only road block now is that I’m also supposed to limit soy, corn and grains that contain gluten, which sounds so difficult to do, but I’m going to try!

    I’m autistic and I have no responses to what my body tells me. I too have been conditioned to ignore everything my body was telling me because I spent most of my life trying to act “normal”. I don’t realise I’m hungry until I’m starving. I don’t even I realise I need the toilet until I’m low-key gonna pee myself. And with the food I want to eat if I’m having a bad sensory day I’ll want to eat junk food that makes me feel worse in the long term. So I force myself to eat the balanced meal even though I hate the textures or taste because i know it will make my body feel good. So even to look after myself properly I have to ignore those autistic instincts.

    Feeling like the IE defender now he talks about, but what you say you do... it sounds a lot like intuïtive eating.... IE is way more than just hunger and satiety and way more than "just listen to your body".... I feel like you have not read the book? Or you don't really know what IE actually is? I am NOT saying anyone SHOULD do "IE", everyone should do what they want and the rest of the world should leave them be (as long as no harm to others is done), but I don't like it when people dismiss something with arguments that actually are not correct....

    This is interesting because I am a person who can only eat intuitively. Since my early childhood I suffered of weak diggestion and abdominal pains which were connected to foods and eating and I remember really early age knowing which foods were not suitable for me - starting from most of the uncooked vegetables to cheese and milk etc. In my late teens I tried to eat against my intution - fex. milk products - cause I was told that I needed it for my bone health. But eating like that only made me ill. After that I tried being vegan for four years in my early 20's but became allergic to most of the nuts and seeds, tofu and other soy products and then added oily fish and organic eggs into my diet instead. Now eating intuitively this non-dairy vegetarian diet with fish and eggs for the past 20 years I have been doing good, I am healthy and energetic. After suffering so much in the past I will never go back listening to anyones advices when it comes to food, just trying to listen to my body like I was when I was a child. I have been practicing Ashtanga Yoga for about 20 years now and I think it helps me a lot in connecting myself with my body and hearing how it is doing. So we are all individuals and different things work for us. Just wanted to share this, to say that yes, there are people to whom the intuitive eating is the only way to live!
