Looking at some of the recent pedal prices and then the Dave Mustaine Reverb store scalping.
Normally I'd put a Reverb link here but Yeah, Nah. Don't buy any of this.

Reminds me of this PS5 fiasco. People who buy scalped items are the biggest cuckolds. I have no respect for people who so badly need to consume, that they're willing to pay like 3x the price knowing they're getting screwed. It's a matter of principle, i'm not giving some greasy fuck money thinking he's being clever.

The answer is very simple. Don't buy the darn things. People have to stop with this annoying practice of whining about stuff and still giving the offender money. If someone wants to upsell a piece of gear by that much, than that person better keep it forever because you shouldn't even complain about the price. The market regulates itself quite well if people do this.

How Keith/Essex have managed to get away with this for SO long genuinely baffles me.
He bought a guitar from me a few years ago, through his wife’s account and trying to pretend it was someone else, lied to me about knowing the previous owner of the guitar (which he couldn’t, since I’d owned it from new), and initially sent me an offer so low it was actually insulting. I know this is minor, but he also never left feedback from the purchase.
He sold a guitar to a friend of mine and had managed to conveniently hide that the clear coat lacquer was peeling from the guitar in all of his photos. When my friend asked about it he got a dismissive answer back that it wasn’t a big deal when, to my friend, it very much was.
I also, through a friend of a friend, know that Andy Sneap recently sold him a bunch of gear, which Essex has now put up at significantly higher than what he paid for them. He bought the drum kit used on one of the recent Megadeth albums (I forget if it was 13 or Dystopia but don’t worry, I’m sure his listing will tell you in all caps) for about £6000. It’s now up for sale at £35,000 last time I looked.
He also relentlessly flexes on his Instagram about how much he loves his Bentleys and other way-too-expensive luxury items. Don’t let this scalper buy another Bentley. Support the decent sellers on Reverb/eBay instead.

I find it distasteful to try to sell something at far above market price because it makes the seller look like a fool. But if someone is willing and able to pay for something, then therein is proof it was the market price. There has to be some way to divvy up scarce instruments if so many people want them. If you offered below market price, it would merely give you something else to complain about: that the first person to click “buy” (via lucky timing to be aware, best Internet speed, or other factors) got the prize, not necessarily who wanted it more. My own solution was to quit pining over rare gear as a musician. Instead, I take the middle path of using gear that resonates culturally with myself and others so I can build musical connections with it. Some of my best musical experiences happened playing on my first practice 10 Watt amp and knock-off Strat with my friends in 7th grade. Gear is merely a platform, but will NEVER be the music. Ever.

Yea, it gets to a point where you're just paying for paint jobs and prestige.
Pickups can be bought and rated by "k" and magnet type. Outside of minor differences, it's just a bobbin of copper.
I used to buy locking tuners for all my guitars until I found out how to wrap lock my strings. Now any tuners will do.
When converting a trem to a hardtail, it isnt neccessary to buy a hardtail, or block it. It literally only adds like 1/4 second of sustain. Just tighten the 6 bridge screws and adjust springs to level.
Theres nothing wrong with small pots. Potentiometer tech is from the 50s. They were used in old radio , sonar, and everything else.
      5$ strings are fine.
If you dont live nextdoor to the guitar factory, frett work is a gamble. Where you live has different humidity and temperature than the factory. If the guitar was made in Florida, and you live in Minnesota, there is definitely going to be frett sprout. Buy a $1 metal nail file and fix it.
I could go on, but the point is , if the neck and body are sound, there isnt a whole lot more to hope for.
You can buy $100 guitar, get a $100 in upgrades and have something more than stage worthy.

Being that the prices he listed the gear at were in the realm of possibility it's obvious that he wanted these to go to his fans and the fans of the band. I wouldn't be surprised that if there were other artists in the future that did a similar selloff, that they would include a thing that only one item per buyer and address. You get a piece of history and a keepsake to hold on to, but you leave some for everyone else too. What this guy did, detestable and anyone who pays these prices are fools. I love Megadeth and Dave seems like a cool guy, but these aren't Dime's "Dean From Hell" or Stevie Ray Vaughan's #1. The true Mustaine collectibles are gonna be those early Jacksons

Thing is, if everyone refuses the scalpers prices, they are out of pocket, and then they have to sell for a reasonable price. Really Dave Mustaine should have put a one item per customer limit on it if he wanted to be fair. Because ultimately what this scalper has done is rob Dave Mustaine of money he could have earned for them, and made it unlikely that any artists will be sell for their fans ever again.

@@From_A_Diverging_Timeline There can be many pitfalls to ordering online from other countries outside of your own - outside of just language barriers. Import duties + taxes, sellers who choose to defraud you, undisclosed issues on the guitar - finding it in stock for hot items such as the Asuka - shipping damage - having to return defective units (customs forms needing to be filled out for returns.) I act as a broker to ensure that they will get a guitar or a refund without any hassle. To some, that is worth paying a premium for. It isn't quite just as easy as submitting an order when it comes to multi-thousand dollar guitars. Also, some shops refuse to ship outside of the country due to manufacturer rules - or because they just don't want to. Having an online presence helps. For the Asuka's - I had to go through 20 shops, just to find 3 that could supply the orders! My service isn't for everyone... but it is there for those who need it

    I'll have to respectfully disagree:
▩ The only problem here is that Dave meant it as a chance for fans to get hands on his gear,
and instead it got bought by an a-hole dealer who chose to brag about it too instead of just keeping his lid shut.
Dave should have anticipated that all this will be bought for profit - and should have set up a raffle sale instead, choosing the buyers randomly.
▩ As sad as it is, it's obvious that dude is not just reselling the gear, but also the name behind the gear and a piece of history, complete with COA and signature. And as long as somebody is willing to pay the price, it's worth it. That's what dealers and auction houses do.
▩ As for the items that are mass produced, you can still get them at "regular" value, for example MXR Super Comp is widely available for $80, and you can get Dave's signature guitars for anywhere between 700-1500, so it's not exactly "scalping" - as his prices will not affect the market price for this gear.

noticed something similar. I don't follow new guitar releases too much, But a few months ago Fender Japan released a signature Evangelion Asuka telecaster. they were around 2400 if i recall and then with import maybe 3000. Only a small amount were made and after they sold out I was seeing them sell for 6000, 7000 dollars. Not as extreme as the musician owned gear, but still more than twice the amount Fender Japan sold them for. I actually saw a youtuber who bought 4 or 5 of Asuka signature tele's and he said " So fans could get them" He didn't say how much he resold them for , but I'm assuming a profit. You know, instead of buying 5 and "helping the fans get them" The fans could have just bought those 5 guitars from Fender Japan without making him some money. The thing that bothered me the most was he didn't even know what Evangelion was. He just bought them because of the hype and he knew he could resell them.

    • @JohnDoeWasntTaken
      @JohnDoeWasntTaken 2 года назад +2

Wow, I like Evangelion so that is actually a little infuriating. It's funny how people will go nuts over a guitar with 3000 produced just because it is attached to an iconic franchise trying to sell it as rarer than rocking horse shit. I know of a few ESP Japan models that have less than 200 produced but thankfully since the Americans haven't heard of these signature and more unique models they can still be had for VERY reasonable prices from Japanese music stores. I am jealous of the Japanese for how great it must be to be a guitarist there compared to elsewhere.

After many years playing things needed replacing and I neglected the instrument because I thought it had an added value attached. The instrument eventually did the opposite of what it was meant to do and made me sad. This year I brought it to a luthier in Cork, and completely rewired it and he actually put in more suitable pots and it plays better. More "valuable" to me now.

Exactly this. And despite what KDH might have to say about it, Trogly doesn't get a pass. There were 245 that hit the market. At least 4 of them went through his hands. He's currently listing one of them for about twice what they retailed for and his own listing describes it as looking like it was gouged with a metal pick.

Yeah, they also have one of James Hetfield‘s signature ESP LTD Grynch Viper Baritones from back in the day on there as well (24 out of 260 to be exact) for $72,477.45, with $217.44 shipping. Thing is, it was owned by Evanescence’s John LeCompt and used in their My Immortal video and televised on the 2003 AMA’s. But almost $72,500 is still an INSANELY steep price but given its history I can _almost_ understand it although think around $10,000 would be more reasonable.

(MOOD is consistently above 400 on reverb for the past couple months, blooper above 600) there are dealers who ship fast for msrp tho

This seems to be a problem across the board. A few years ago a pedal manufacture pointed out that a circuit in a $50 pedal that was currently on the market, was identical to a much sought after discontinued pedal that sells for $500+. Not only did the few stores that carry such a 'lowly' brand sell out immediately, but a wait list developed and people started selling them on line for four times the retail price. For many people the internet has become to get between manufacturer and customer and demand a ransom

The one that really pissed me off is the Boss/Sola Sound TB-2W! It was a limited run that sold for something like $350. People were buying 5, sometimes more, and then selling them for $1500 each! Its ridiculous!!!

Same thing happened for the first release of the PS5.
For scalping I have two main concerns, wth is wrong with the people overinflating the price and what is wrong with the people who think it's ok to spend the money on scalped items.
Another thing I find kinda unreasonable, imo, is the +pricing on gear that has been owned by someone famous and the obsession for vintage gear as well.
I will never understand these people

As grim as this is, the moment a celebrity dies, scalpers will always jump on anything related to that celebrity. BUT, that is not the worst problem. The worst problem is how when a celebrity dies, overnight, we will have loads of obvious fakes looking to scam fans who want to snatch up anything related to their idol.
Case in point, a month after EVH died, I found a counterfeit "EVH-owned Marshall" on Reverb. I doubt many would know what to look for, but, thankfully, I know.
1: Those memorial plaques were obviously glued on. Those inscriptions were NOT engraved onto the actual amp itself.
2: Those memorial plaques say they were presented to EHV in 1985. The serial number starts with Y, which means the amp was made in 1990.
3: The serial number also says S/A, which means it is a 50W, while the product ID sticker says 100W.
So, the name plate does not match the serial number, and the amp itself was built 5 YEARS AFTER THEY CLAIM IT WAS PRESENTED TO EVH, not to mention the plaques are GLUED-ON. This thing is an obvious fake, and not even a GOOD fake. And this fake was made entirely to take advantage of grieving EVH fans.
There are two lessons to be learned here. The first lesson learned is education will go a long way. If you do know what to look for, you can avoid getting scammed by fakes. The second lesson learned here is those of us who do know what to look for need to be active, maybe even proactive in finding fakes, so we can protect those who DON'T know what to look for, so we can prevent them from getting scammed by fakes.
