I was working on a K1P1 ribbing beanie hat got stuck at shaping the crown.Glad to find your post. Round 1:*K2,P2Tog*repeat till Round 2: *K2tog,P1*repeat Round 3: *SSK *repeat Round 4: *K2tog*repeat Round 5: knit stitch. End up 9stitches and finish with a darning needle, pull thru and weave the ends. End Result is a very neat crown. Thank you very much for sharing this pattern. Thank you, thank you
I just figured this one out. I'd like to share it for easier knitting :) The round 3 of the decrease rounds... For the SSK, just do the slip as if to knit and put that stitch back on the needle. No need to slip the second stitch as to purl. Because you are going to put that stitch back on the same direction.
Just wrote out notes for myself and thought someone else might find them helpful: 1) K2, P2tog 2) K2tog, P1 3) SSK - Slip 1 to Knit, Slip 1 to Purl, Knit both together through back loops 4) K2tog 5) knit a round Then get sewing needle and tie off, take inside of hat for neat and strong finish weave into hat for neat finish. Hope that helps, thanks for the really great video!
Thank you for posting this, I'm a new knitter and had started a hat with no knowledge on how to finish it, and as an expat it's nice to hear an English accent!
You throw your yarn very wide just like I do! I've wanted to learn Continental style which is much faster, but I've been knitting my way for 60 years. Hard to change when your nearly 70 years old...thanks for the tutorial.
Thank you so very much for your wonderful demonstration on how to decrease hat knitting crown. It is my first time ever I learned who can show it so well. Thank you so much for teaching.
Thank you for posting this I just want to say I have seen and worked many close offs that make the hat look uneven and odd at the crown, your close is absolutly beautiful and a great brush up for use of DPNS at closure Thank you
Thank you so much for creating this tutorial video! Your demonstration and explanation of the crown decreasing process for a ribbed hat is detailed, and thorough. Please consider creating more tutorial videos. 🤗
Wow, you saved me! I used more stitches than my pattern suggested, and I thought it just needed to be a multiple of 4, but the stitch count needed to be a multiple of 16, so there was so way to do the crown using that pattern. This is a lovely looking crown - thank you!
Just pure genius. You really helped me. I must say you are a very tight knitter so I applaud the fact you could knit 2tog at all. I knit so loosely it's aggravating. I thank you so much for the answer to my hat decreases. It's a very clean neat finish to my hat.
+Marlene Jones If you are finding you're knitting looser than you would like maybe you could experiment with some alternative ways of holding the working yarn ready to tension release for knitting the next stitch? I'm always trying different styles of knitting just in case I feel more comfortable using another method. I'm so glad the video has helped you get a lovely neat hat! :-)
This is fantastic. It took me so may tries to find a video that actually made sense . I got a perfect decrease my first try , following your video. Thank you so much
I’m a beginning knitter and this video is beautiful. Easy to follow and worked for me perfectly first time. I will always use this decrease on 2x2 hats and, probably, knit more of them because of this. Thank you.
This is a lovely video. That yarn is gorgeous! I’d like to share that I had a very great struggle with knitting and purling two together until I trained myself to knit on the tips of the needles. I see that you are struggling in the same way I did by working down on the barrels of the needles. This can cause a lot of stress on the tendons in the hands and long term hand issues. Suzanne Bryan has a video that shows how to knit on the tips of the needles for both English and Continental knitters. That video changed my life and I stopped hurting myself using her technique. Blessings to you!
I'm so glad you posted this video! I'm new to knitting and decided to keep it simple with a k2p2 beanie only I had no idea how to finish it off... until now!
Thanks for posting the video. It really helped when using a 2x2 ribbed pattern. I have a question for you though... Would a person use the exact same stitch formula for decreasing in the round using a 1x1 ribbed pattern, as you did in the video for the 2x2 ribbed pattern? Or should I be knitting and purling less together? I tried but it didn't work to keep the pattern the same.
Fantastic video! Thanks Karen! You explained everything so well I feel it can be applied to help with any purl/knit pattern decrease. Thanks for showing the whole decrease as well.
Thank you for the info. I did a hat a had to start over 10 times and couldn't finish the top closer with out your explanation at least twenty times. I finished it on mother's day, just now.
+chanell hewlett Knitting is a wonderful way to relax and create, so I hope you enjoy making your beanie. I explain how to work out how many stitches to cast on for any size and any thickness of yarn in another video. The yarns should give you the recommended needle size and average tension achieved, if you use that needle size, on the label. Welcome to knitting! :-)
Thank you, I was using two needles it worked perfectly except for the last row of knit. to make my pattern look correct it was a row of Pearl I think but you'll be able to see when you do it just swap the pearls and the plain in the right and it looks great thank you
Thank you very much for this video. It was incredibly helpful to me! That is such beautiful yarn and such a lovely hat you made! What a lucky daughter you have! :)
Thank you for this video! Quick question: if I’m knitting my beanie with a rice stitch (k,p,k,p - p,k,p,k) what should I do if I want to finish it in a pretty round and flat shape like you did in this video? I know I’m 4 years late but hopefully you’ll see this 😊 many thanks!
thank you for your speedy response!! I love the multi color affect and you have done some beautiful work and have so graciously shared. again thank you:)
So would it be any use trying to decrease the same way in stockinette stitch? Cos my ribbing is only on the edge of the beanie, and the rest is circularly made knit stitch.(stockinette) I'm going nuts cos altho this is the most satisfying look, my hat is NOT ribbed! And everyone else has abstruse and complex mathematical equations which sorry: not good at.
Wow this is a super clear video! Thanks! I do need some additional advice though... I've made a balaclava out of a 2x2 ribbing pattern. From the eyebrow line I'm supposed to continue the ribbing until the hairline (about 2 inches), then start the decrease. Will this decrease pattern work to decrease from the hairline to the middle of the head or will I have to knit a few more rows of ribbing before I start the decrease? Note I'm working off an existing 3x1 ribbing pattern. Since I decided to change it to 2x2 I've confused myself for the decrease. :( Please advise. Thanks!
Great video. I am an intermediate knitter but this helped me with making the decrease look like knit stitches when k2tog that we're knit and purl. I also found your voice to be almost soothing like Bob Ross and his painting videos. Thanks.
+Karen Mutchii bob Ross was a US painter in the eighties and the nineties. He painted outdoor landscapes and had a program on public access television. I was a very small child but I watched those videos and aside from learning to paint I enjoyed the softness of his voice when he explained technique, much like you do. Thanks and I subscribed to your channel. Hope to see more of these videos.
+Jess Torres I checked him out and he's so passionate about his painting, and he draws you in (no pun intended ;-) I'm really glad you enjoyed my video, and thanks for subscribing :-)
Hope the recipient appreciates that difficult/fiddley decrease on the double points :) Could you help me with a method to stay in pattern for a 3 x 3 rib pls, or should I just stop the ribbing and knit a row then decrease from that knitted row - wonder how that would look when finished Weather being out of pattern would look to bad??
Just fantastic !!! A bit a silly question : Must I go on at the end with 4 needles instead of a circular needle ?? And how many cm. must I knit before starting the decrease (beanie for an adult woman ) ? For this beanie do you knit with needle N° 4 or 5 ? Thank you ! Marie in France :-)
+Cherryl Harnist I don't have the details of the yarn I used anymore. However, it was a worsted weight, multi-coloured yarn, and there are many of this type readily available at most yarn stockists. Hopefully you can find one that you love, and I have put a free pattern video on youtube called" How to knit a beanie hat/ How many stitches to knit a beanie hat explained/ How to knit a hat", that you can use for any type of yarn, and then you finish up with the crown decreases as shown in this video above
Thanks for the video. Couldn't you have just put all the stitches onto 1 dpn for the 1 round and divided them afterward? I could never work with 1 circular and 3 or 4 dpn's. I love the finished product. I'll certainly use this as a reference.
Hi Dawn, I have a video that explains how to work out how to knit any size hat with any type yarn. It's under this heading...How to knit a beanie hat | how many stitches to knit a beanie explained | How to knit a hat
Hi Edda, The pattern is explained with another video I have done, and then you use this video for the crown decrease. That video is called "How to knit a beanie hat | How many stitches to knit a beanie hat explained | How to knit a hat" (it won't let me put the link here). You can knit the hat as long as you want it and then it's a very quick crown decrease using this video above. I don't recall the yarn I used, but it was one of those that have many colours in so that it creates it's own look. You can choose any yarn so you will not be restricted
Hi Claudia, I guess you could do this with a plain knit beanie and k2tog like you say, but a more traditional method for plain knit is to divide the number of stitches into sections and work down the increases as shown in the following video (adjust the amount of sections according to your number of stitches ie you may need 5 sections or 6 or 7 sections depending on what your total number of stitches divides equally by) ruclips.net/video/VYp0U0HfUHk/видео.html
Hi Sandy, Thankyou :-) I don't have that yarn anymore, but it was a multi-coloured one made up of blues, purples and a little green (all analogous colours). Sorry I can't help you with the specific yarn
I haven't tried it Samantha but maybe in the first decrease you could pearl 2 together twice and knit 2 together twice so that you end up with a 2x 2 ribbing. then k2, p2 all around and then use this video from there
Karen Mutchii sounds great I forgot to knit two times seperate, but I purled together twice ill try it again on my hat, the way I did it left a few small gaps that I sewed closed. Thank you
Hello MyStrange101, This video is especially for 2x2 ribbed hat. There will be crown decreases for 1x1 ribbed hats in google or youtube. However, You can use the SSK technique here in round 3 for the neat K2tog to start off your decreases, and then knit 1 round ( no decreases), and then next round k2tog all around, next round knit all around ( no decreases). so in other words do alternate rounds of decreasing until you have small amount of stitches left on double sided needles (like at the end of this video) I hope I’ve helped a little...also here’s a video about how to close the hole ruclips.net/video/q9ZCOky2GeY/видео.html
Hi Susan, If you are knitting on circular needles in the round you won't need to do a pearl row. The main side is always facing you and so you keep knitting, but put a round marker so that you know where you began. I have a method for crown decreases on my Video called How to knit a beanie hat, Decrease for Crown (it won't let me put the link)
Hi ilurvemv You can use any needle size for this as it depends on what size you have been using to knit your hat. I explain "How to knit a beanie hat | how many stitches to knit a beanie hat explained | How to knit a hat" in one of my other videos. It shows you how to choose needle size. Brand doesn't matter either
I've got a selection of different brands, but I was most likely using Sullivans. www.sullivans.net Here in. Australia I buy them either at Spotlight or Lincraft
+Briahigg1 A finish I do on an adult beanie 1x1 ribbed is knit to length required and then.....SSK for one round (as in the video at around 9.05 Round 3), then the next round knit all around, next round Knit 2 tog all around, and last round knit 2 tog all around, and then cut yarn and finish off. So I use 4 finishing rows
@@MsVegemitekid I tried this for my 1x1 rib stitch, and that first derease is too drastic and looks awful. It keeps the pattern perfectly, but just isn't gradual enough. I wish I could attach a picture. Can you help? Is there a way to use this method for 1x1 rib that is more gradual?
Hi Polly It sounds like you want to decrease very gradually Maybe ssk one round like round 3 so that you end up with knit only stitches Then knit all around next row (no decreasing) Then k2tog next row Knit all around next row (no decreasing) Keep going like that until the end (ie when you have very few stitches left) and close as I show in the video It will lengthen the crown decrease I have not done a crown decrease for a 1x1 ribbed hat with elongation decrease, so I hope this helps Please let me know how it turns out
@@MsVegemitekid it's just the SSK row that is too drastic. I stretched out the decrease in general, but 50% decrease in the SSK row creates a tiny crown of what looks like 2 needle sizes smaller stitching. I know you technically can't see it when I wear the hat, but I'm desperate to find a way to do it slower. My yarn is a 4, and my needles are size 7 (US), in case that matters. I absolutely love my 1x1 rib hats. I really am thankful I found your video and I appreciate your response. I don't want to seem ungrateful by asking too many questions! I wish I had seen your video years ago.
Hi Polly No worries I have this video for a simple hat crown decrease from stocking stitch I haven’t worked at one for 1x1 rib ruclips.net/video/VYp0U0HfUHk/видео.html&app=desktop
I was working on a K1P1 ribbing beanie hat got stuck at shaping the crown.Glad to find your post.
Round 1:*K2,P2Tog*repeat till
Round 2: *K2tog,P1*repeat
Round 3: *SSK *repeat
Round 4: *K2tog*repeat
Round 5: knit stitch. End up 9stitches and finish with a darning needle, pull thru and weave the ends.
End Result is a very neat crown.
Thank you very much for sharing this pattern. Thank you, thank you
The crown looks like a burst of sunshine :) LOVELY!!! Thank you so much, love it!
I just figured this one out. I'd like to share it for easier knitting :)
The round 3 of the decrease rounds... For the SSK, just do the slip as if to knit and put that stitch back on the needle. No need to slip the second stitch as to purl. Because you are going to put that stitch back on the same direction.
thank you for your patient teaching, I love your soothing voice 😊
Just wrote out notes for myself and thought someone else might find them helpful:
1) K2, P2tog
2) K2tog, P1
3) SSK - Slip 1 to Knit, Slip 1 to Purl, Knit both together through back loops
4) K2tog
5) knit a round
Then get sewing needle and tie off,
take inside of hat for neat and strong finish
weave into hat for neat finish.
Hope that helps, thanks for the really great video!
Thanks again. Winter is nearly here so it's hat making season. I always come back to your video to finish. Cheers!

You’d probably start from 9:25
thank you Karen. you are an excellent teacher!
Thankyou so much Leeanne :-) I'm glad it helped!
Thank you so much. Very informative and well explained. Really appreciate it!
Thanks a lot. I am waiting to get a nice & easy hat. Thanks again.
very nice plz let me know can i do another k2tog after round 4 so as to decrease the number of stitches to bind off. I hv casted 100 stitches
Thank you so so so much. Now I have a new hat🥳
Beautiful yarn by the way...
Thank you so much. This was very helpful!
Your instructions are so clear. Thank you!
Thank you so much Paulette! That's very kind of you to say :-)
This video was amazing, thank you, quick question how do you decrease a normal stockinette stitch beanie?
Thanks Karen , & love your Brumie accent . 😃
Lol you picked it 😁
Just now I will start my easy project.
thank you for your speedy response!! I love the multi color affect and you have done some beautiful work and have so graciously shared. again thank you:)

Quite a few Marias on YT
Can't comment on the knitting - but can say you have lovely hands :)
I only just recognised you :-D
If you have more than 80 stitches, how do you continue the decrease?
was doing a k2 p2 rib with a faux cable every 4th row and was unsure how to stay in pattern and decrease. thanks for the video

are there modified stitches for a 4knit 4purl hat, I've stopped my husband hat and need to finish it thanks sam

What about a 1x1 rib stitch? Will this method of decreasing work?
Thank you
do you remember how many stitches and needle size you used for this pattern?
Have a look at this video as it explains everything ruclips.net/video/gAZVuxMMfSs/видео.html
ty! ty! ty! :))
Ty too :-)
thank you for this amazing video......beautiful
Thankyou so much Deepika
How would you do this if your pattern was a one row knit one row pearl?
Hi Susan, If you are knitting on circular needles in the round you won't need to do a pearl row. The main side is always facing you and so you keep knitting, but put a round marker so that you know where you began. I have a method for crown decreases on my Video called How to knit a beanie hat, Decrease for Crown (it won't let me put the link)
Are you still knitting? I love your work ❤️
Thank you
Perfect! Thank you so much!
+Briahigg1 Thankyou too for the feedback :-)
Amazing!! Thank you💖
very nice video...thank you!
What brand and size needles are you using for this?
Hi ilurvemv You can use any needle size for this as it depends on what size you have been using to knit your hat. I explain "How to knit a beanie hat | how many stitches to knit a beanie hat explained | How to knit a hat" in one of my other videos. It shows you how to choose needle size. Brand doesn't matter either
I know but I'd like to know which circular needles you're using in particular if you don't mind sharing. Thanks.
I've got a selection of different brands, but I was most likely using Sullivans. www.sullivans.net Here in. Australia I buy them either at Spotlight or Lincraft

How would you decrease for 1X1 ribbing?
Hi Polly
It sounds like you want to decrease very gradually
Maybe ssk one round like round 3 so that you end up with knit only stitches
Then knit all around next row (no decreasing)
Then k2tog next row
Knit all around next row (no decreasing)
Keep going like that until the end (ie when you have very few stitches left) and close as I show in the video
It will lengthen the crown decrease
I have not done a crown decrease for a 1x1 ribbed hat with elongation decrease, so I hope this helps
Please let me know how it turns out
@@MsVegemitekid it's just the SSK row that is too drastic.
Hi Polly
No worries
I have this video for a simple hat crown decrease from stocking stitch
I haven’t worked at one for 1x1 rib
