It can't be too close, because you need it to gain speed to be effective. IRL, the builders would have known exactly when to release it for maximum effect.
Outwardly we are "civilised" (rule of law, the state and its institutions, diplomacy, dialogue etc.) but at the core we still revel in violence and the need for revenge when being messed with. That is why we love these shows. Vikings, Rome HBO, Knightfall etc.
Also why the gladiator events in Rome were so popular and medieval jousts as well as currently with Mma, football with hard tackles, bull riders getting thrown into the air or ran over, wwe (even tho it's fake, kids then and the kids who watch it now loved it) etc. We now try to act like such violent sports or events aren't civilized and barbaric but it's in our nature to enjoy it.
@@carlost856 If you form a phalanx style formation, once the front row halts the momentum the entire formation would either a) stay in a closed formation (not really helpful except just a mass v mass) or b) all soldiers in the 3rd row and back step one or two back in order to allow indivisual mobility within the line. B depends on the strength of the front and second row's ability to stay alive and hold back the opposition while the middle and back rows use spears or anything with reach to get stuck in.

If weighted properly that roller has more mass than the entirety of the men allowed to enter that enclosed corridor, not to talk about it's speed.
This was one of the most thrilling szenes of the whole show, loved it
Damn...I want a series about the Franks and the Karlingians so much :(
Sorry vikings the Francks were the badasses in these episodes. Must enjoyable battle recreation of all series!!!
rollo solos the franks haha
They should have released that killing machine a little bit later, when the attackers where close to the defenders.

Might have slowed the momentum down
Seems only Rollo, Floki and Ubbe won in this series. love it
That's gotta be one of the most fucked up ways to die possible
Interesting and deadly
I could not imagine the morale damage the thing could cause.
Such a simple design, yet so brutally effective.

Long passed civilized and seems more like enslaved….
Rollo is a GOD OF WAR
Spectacular defense.

sheild wall would have came in real handy
Not against that much momentum it wouldn't have.
@@carlost856 that's what a thick row of men would be for
@@comraderoyalguard4699 how many rows of men do you reckon would it take to stop a car? How many would still be in fighting condition after?
