I’m from Cairo. Born in 1957. We used to live down the street from that Bell gravestone place. Ate at the Mack’s restaurant and watched movies at the Gem theater. My family moved to suburbs of Chicago in 1966 for my Dads job. The point was a fun picnic place. Beautiful rivers. Haven’t been there since about 1978. Very sad how the town is mostly empty. I still want to go see it again someday. Thanks for the awesome video. I enjoyed it very much.
I love how you show us these places and spots we would otherwise not notice or just miss. Love every detail you show. Thanks for showing off this location.
My grandmother was born in Cairo, Illinois. This was a very interesting stop for me because when I was younger she told me stories about her journey to Indianapolis to seek employment because of how her community was dying. Thanks for this video.
I miss watching the older cartoons like Popeye and Felix the Cat. I still need to watch the Robin Williams movie. I love all the statues around town. I had no idea Popeye starred in Betty Boop, nor that Betty Boop shared a voice with Olive Oil. That's amazing. ♥ I appreciate these vids dude, thank you!
Thank you for sharing your adventures. I find your videos comforting to me. I watch it daily with Adam’s adventures as well. Best wishes for an enjoyable summer.
There is a food processing factory in Chester. They make popcorn and various food products. And a lot of the semi trucks moving through there are because of the factory.
I remember Jeep, The Goons, and The Sea Hag...but I recall the show as Wimpy saying, "I will gladly pay you Tuesday, for a hamburger today!" I feel like that Big Foot statue is missing a discuss in his right hand that he's getting ready to throw....or at least a bowling ball.
Cairo IL is pronounced KAY-ROH. Visited last year to see the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers and to cross the two sketchy brides there. Was blown away how run down Cairo is.
I grew up just across the river in Kentucky. As a teen, I spent many weekend nights sitting on the flood wall in Cairo. I can confirm it is not pronounced like the city in Egypt and I didn’t think the town could be more boring than it was back then. But it is. Lol
Cairo is like Eton and Lafayette. It has various traditional pronunciations in different areas based on the original ethnic pronunciation when the town was named. No two American namesakes are pronounced the same way.
I remember the Popeye characters from comic books when I was a kid. And growing up, I had always heard that Cairo was a gang infested dangerous place. And maybe it was in the 80, but now ut just looked empty and sad.
Popeye fan here in Decatur, Il! I recall, popeye, bluto, olive oyl, Eugene the Jeep, Sweepea, Wimpy, alice the goon(the goons), Pappy, there was a dog, and another sailor with popeye on occassion, castor oyl, coal? Oyl ( the Dad) Sea Hag, there was a buzzard…all i can recall
We were driving through Cairo a few weeks ago and talking about how deserted the old town was. Suddenly, a woman jumped out from behind one of the old buildings carrying a running chain saw. It freaked us out!!! How did you like driving under the north side railroad tunnel with the huge steel flood gate overhead?
I just have to say that the Mississippi River road trip is by far my favorite! They have been fantastic! I do enjoy all your videos but these are just great!
I hope the USS Cairo museum in Vicksburg, MS is on your itinerary. They pulled what was left of the boat up out of the Yazoo River mud several decades ago. It's pretty impressive.
i'm 67 , popeye and felix the cat , mighty mouse were our first cartoons from what i remember ! but i'm pretty sure popeye was probably later than felix
Been to see the Popeye memorial a few times, I like the big flood gates as you arrive from the outside of towne. I remember the Eugene D'jeep could pass through solid walls etc:)
Another GREAT episode in the Great River Road trip,!!!! Cairo was VERY sad n haunting as you described it!!! Wonderful series!!! Attaboy Carpetbagger!!!
The ending of the river is called the mouth And when they meet you said what it is called at least where I am from..around here they call it "the Point" Lol mothman ..well the cryptid had to have two in it .
Jacob, you got the sequence of events wrong when you were talking about Betty Boop. Popeye did first appear in the Thimble Theater comic. It was several years later, when Fleischer Studios got the animation rights to Popeye, that they decided to first feature him in a Betty Boop short before his own cartoon started.
Back in 2007 or 2008 I was working in the area for a short time and visited Cairo. It was really weird being there. The city couldn't afford to maintain traffic lights, so they were replaced with stop signs. The sign posts weren't even put in the ground, but attached to old wheels/rims and weighted with sandbags. The cop cars were lettered with cheap mailbox letters.
Fun Fact: The Ohio River is both wider and has a larger discharge rate into the Mississippi River at Cairo, Illinois, yet south of Cairo the Mississippi River continues and not the Ohio. A river that are larger or has a greater discharge rate than the river it is merging with, will continue downstream with its name, and not with the smaller river's name. An example of this is the confluence of the Des Moines River and Mississippi River at Keokuk, Iowa, and because the Mississippi is larger, downstream the river continues as the Mississippi and not as the Des Moines. The confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers is the largest example that I know of where the smaller river continues with its name downstream.
6:16 Interesting fact about the movie with Robin Williams and Shelly Duval in "Popeye" The film was produced by Walt Disney Productions, but not released through Disney. They partnered with Paramount Pictures to release and distribute the film, and let Paramount keeps the rights to the movie.
I believe that Popeye was featured in a Betty Boop animated cartoon, not her comic strip. His first words in the Thimble Theater comic strip were a reply to the question, “Are you a sailor?” Popeye replied, “Ya think I yam a cowboy?”
Video hits close to home because I’ve seen a lot of these locations. Chester comes up because my GPS took me a weird way out of St. Louis on the way home from my Grandma’s funeral a couple years ago. Ended up cutting through Chester and found it super cool, though I didn’t stop long. Meanwhile Cairo is about 30 minutes from where I live, and it’s sad to see how run down it is. There’s a big new area of houses and such that I think is an attempt to revitalize the area but not sure how well it’s working. Cool to think depending on where he travelled next, he might’ve passed right by my house at some point.
I vaguely remember Eugene the Jeep as being a weird and CREEPY element to that cartoon, which I also found weird n CREEPY!!!! STILL gives me the bloody CREEPS!!!
I remember Wimpy burgers (in the uK) from when I was a kid. Other brands have taken over since the 1980s. I looked it up and there are still four of five of them here in London but none of them are in the centre or anywhere near where I live. I might have to make a journey one day soon to revisit my youth.
We have Wimpy burger restaurants in the UK still. Not many left though. They started in 1934 just 3 years after the Wimpy character was introduced in Popeye. So unsure if that is a coincidence or not?
I remember Jeep but I'm 62. He just hopped around and said "Jeep-Jeep". And it was "I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a Hamburger today." I feel old😖
I’m from Cairo. Born in 1957. We used to live down the street from that Bell gravestone place. Ate at the Mack’s restaurant and watched movies at the Gem theater. I like it when you show us the old, abandoned roadside places. Those sites are just so fascinating to see.
Loved Robin Williams in the Popeye movie. Went to the drive in as a kid.
As a Navy Veteran, i can say Popeye has always been sort of our mascot, he was painted on the superstructures of many ships.
Thank you for your military service
Marine here, we had a civilian contractor assigned to us who was ex Navy that we called Popeye.
People truly underestimate how many overlooked attractions and areas there are out here. "Flyover" country can be truly impressive.
I love how you show us these places and spots we would otherwise not notice or just miss. Love every detail you show. Thanks for showing off this location.
You keep telling us stuff we don't know. Thanks, it's very interesting!
This is Jacob’s Tom Sawyer adventure and I’m here for it. He almost even has a straw hat. He needs to put a piece of wheat in the brim for this trip
My grandmother was born in Cairo, Illinois. This was a very interesting stop for me because when I was younger she told me stories about her journey to Indianapolis to seek employment because of how her community was dying. Thanks for this video.
Those might be some of my favorite pennys so far. So original.
I love Popeye it’s my childhood and a classic
Sometimes it's Bluto, sometimes it's Brutus. It's always confused me
Thank you for sharing your adventures. I find your videos comforting to me. I watch it daily with Adam’s adventures as well. Best wishes for an enjoyable summer.
I loved watching Popeye. Thank you for another wonderful day along the mighty Mississippi!
I always hoped you'd go to Cairo and show us around! Thank you, Jacob. May you have safe travels always.
Wimpy will pay you Tuesday for a burger today.
good morning jacob! thanks again for taking us on this river road adventure! shout out popeye!
Murphysboro, my home town! Will be visiting for only the second time since 2000 and now I have to make Chester! Thanks Jacob!
There is a food processing factory in Chester. They make popcorn and various food products. And a lot of the semi trucks moving through there are because of the factory.
Have been following since day 1 of this trip. You're doing a great job, giving us lots of history and also fun along the way. Be safe in your travels.
I remember Jeep, The Goons, and The Sea Hag...but I recall the show as Wimpy saying, "I will gladly pay you Tuesday, for a hamburger today!"
I feel like that Big Foot statue is missing a discuss in his right hand that he's getting ready to throw....or at least a bowling ball.
You can actually go to the Popeye movie set in Malta. They turned into a little theme park like attraction! Super cool that it’s still around.
If I remember correctly. They do a Popeye festival after Labor Day
Someday you should do the lewis and Clark expedition
Cairo IL is pronounced KAY-ROH. Visited last year to see the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers and to cross the two sketchy brides there. Was blown away how run down Cairo is.
Are you sure? Wikipedia says it’s named after Cairo, Egypt… but I also don’t believe everything I read on the wiki. Lol
I'm from Southern IL. I can indeed confirm everyone here says kay-row or care-oh. Weird but true.
I grew up just across the river in Kentucky. As a teen, I spent many weekend nights sitting on the flood wall in Cairo. I can confirm it is not pronounced like the city in Egypt and I didn’t think the town could be more boring than it was back then. But it is. Lol

@@looselycollected7505 Paducah Ky chiming in.
Yep, it's pronounced "Kay Row" around here.
And it used to be a beautiful town.
I look forward to coming home from work and seeing what new adventure we are going on today. Thank you Jacob for taking me along.
Love watching the videos as I plan trips I will take if I ever retire. Thanks for sharing.
I remember the Popeye characters from comic books when I was a kid. And growing up, I had always heard that Cairo was a gang infested dangerous place. And maybe it was in the 80, but now ut just looked empty and sad.
Thanks Jacob. I'm enjoying your travels.
Just saw you at Bass Pro Shop in Memphis. Woulda said hi but you were recording
Chester is getting a new bridge. Detoured traffic.
My dad likes watching Popeye on TV back when he was a kid. They only have 3 channels (3,6, and 10) back in the day. Hope you have a great time Jacob!
Popeyes was one of my favorite childhood TV show!
@@Midnighthauntt That's great to hear! Same thing for my dad.
Enjoy watching your vlog on the creator of Popeye and alone with museum Jacob!
I remember popeye and son the cartoon in the 80s . We still have wimpys here (mostly the south) here in the uk
Thanks again.
I have enjoyed traveling down the mighty Mississippi river with you, Jacob ❤️
Popeye brought back a ton of memories - my personal favorites were the Sea Hag and Alice the Goon. (and that'll age me for sure).
Cairo, IL had a significant role in the book American Gods by Neil Gaiman. I highly recommend reading it!
This was such a good one. Loved seeing the ghost town.
Yes Hamms does have a bear mascot. From the land of sky blue waters.

I caught your appearance in Slaughterhouse On The Hill last night. Classic lol!
I love your impressions of the characters ! Great episode Jacob ! Thanks !
I just have to say that the Mississippi River road trip is by far my favorite! They have been fantastic! I do enjoy all your videos but these are just great!
Wonderful .. had no idea CayRow (Cairo, Il) was a ghost town.. wow! It was booming during Mark Twains time…
Great video! Loving your adventure! Those old houses are amazing!
Danke!
Loving this trip!!! Be safe!
I hope the USS Cairo museum in Vicksburg, MS is on your itinerary. They pulled what was left of the boat up out of the Yazoo River mud several decades ago. It's pretty impressive.

I watched a lot of Popeye cartoons growing up, the black and white ones were my favorite. Good video!
Really enjoying this River road trip 😀.... can't wait to click on Utube every morning....safe travels Jacob.
I ordered a pin, it’s the one of you in a chariot that awaits! 😂
Wow didn’t know all that was there. Passing through there today
If you work at something you love, you never have to work a day in your life.
The ending of the river is called the mouth
And when they meet you said what it is called at least where I am from..around here they call it "the Point"
Lol mothman ..well the cryptid had to have two in it .

That's so sad. You'd think that they could figure out someway to afford them.
With such a tiny population, not a lot of tax revenue, I would guess. I wonder if they have their own post office, library?... 🤔
Good Morning " YA ALL " Jacob the Carpetbagger

Mr. Bear was the name of the mascot for Hamm's beer.
My favorite ride at Universal Studios is the Popeye water ride.
I enjoy watching your RUclips Channel, Jacob! 👍👍👍👍
Good Evening Jacob 🙋🏽.
Wimpy says: I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today
Statue is bronze colored the great muddy monster was dark bronzed.

Jacob thank you for another great video and taking me on adventures of places I will never go.
Love this video carpetbagger and I would love to see you visit dollywood in a future video.
Wimpy’s is a hamburger chain in England. I know coz I was in one 44 yrs ago.

Hi Jacob I love Popeye what a true classic..This trip so going so well.. XXXX
I remember Wimpy burgers (in the uK) from when I was a kid. Other brands have taken over since the 1980s. I looked it up and there are still four of five of them here in London but none of them are in the centre or anywhere near where I live. Whimpy's is a burger chain in the California valley. Also beleive there is one at Universal Studios.
Woohoo, CarpetBagger posted!
You missed the Lincoln heritage stuff in Jonesboro IL.
I'm a big fan I love your videos I'm actually goin to the Wisconsin State Fair in August I would love to meet u and get a picture with u
We have Wimpy burger restaurants in the UK still. Not many left though. They started in 1934 just 3 years after the Wimpy character was introduced in Popeye. So unsure if that is a coincidence or not?
Popeye Spinach.....from Alma, Arkansas!!!!
So sad ,the whole town is no longer inhabited.😮 Some the houses look beautiful. So some people still live there😮
First!! Thank you Jacob!
