I am so pleased that manufacturers are listening to you. Your input is insightful, and invaluable. This AMG is ok looking. But since there is no ICE, I think we are missing an opportunity for some innovative and beautiful designs. Good that Mercedes has improved the dynamics, but can't get passed the styling: it's an electric banana on wheels! And totally agree with Motoman on the need for some buttons and switches for the most frequently used functions.
I’m glad Mercedes is offering this vehicle as an AMG, but I think that they are walking the tightrope between ultra luxury and performance here. I’m guessing that they want and need an AMG for enthusiasts that want more performance but don’t want to alienate traditional buyers of the S Class. I think they hit on just the right mix of both here and for that, they should be congratulated. I’m looking forward to your full first drive review of the SL next month so that I can hear some actual engine noise instead of piped in sound (lovely as it may be).
Tesla gets up to 250 kW from a 400 kW-ish system. Imagine Marc using Korean batteries, but keeping the size. It would get (at 800 V-ish) 300 kW and for a pretty long part of the curve. The missing frunk vs leading EV is a bit lame. Lucid Air is a shorter car but fit a HUGE one. So Merc needs to try MUCH harder with packaging. I just want a wagon but doubt even the EQE will get one soon. Brands don't like to give us the cars we want when electric.
Whether they have to, for the purposes of increasing range, or just to be as "green" as possible, for the foreseeable future, electric cars will likely keep looking like this: i.e. a low drag coefficient, slippery shape with those god awful aerodynamic flat wheel designs. Given that wagons/estates are not as aerodynamic, they will be some of the last cars offered in electric format. Just my 2 cents! I wish they prove me wrong. Hopefully the M3 Touring will sell in huge numbers and that influences things...
Great review Motoman. I respectfully disagree with you regarding giving Mercedes a “ding” for utilizing a 400 volt architecture versus an 800 volt architecture. Reason being; as manufacturer’s begin moving to the Tesla NACS charging plug arrangement on new EV’s, Mercedes will be able to full-rate charge at most 500 volt Supercharger locations, which will be fantastic when road tripping. However, most of the 800 volt plus architecture EV’s will be charge-rate limited by their own built-in electronics modules that boost the incoming 500 volt DC power up to the voltage required to actually charge an 800 - 900 volt EV battery. I say this because a large percentage of the non-Tesla high voltage Public DC chargers (1000 volt) here in the US are pitifully unreliable.
Really amazes me that so many people think an EV is "futuristic". They were very popular 110 years ago; especially in urban areas EVs eventually were 30% of the cars on US roads by 1912! To a driver in 1900 the positives about EVs (simpler, quieter, easier to operate) are also true today. Convenience is why gas eventually won: the electric starter made ICE easy to start and cheap oil made cheap gas available everywhere that EVs didn't have the range to go. What's new is old, and what's old is now new again.
I have noticed that in Germany, almost nothing is standard on any Mercedes no matter how cheap or expensive its base price is. You have to pay for a bunch of packages and individual options to have a decently loaded car.
HEPA option is great for people who have hayfever like me .. although a lot of cabin air filters are HEPA or close enough on many cars and comes as a no cost option.
I didn't get notification either, looked for your channel manually for news - un - / subscribed again hopefully it will work again. Great review - I know that exterior design is not for everybody - but for me its modern and fresh - right now the best luxury EV on the market. It's interesting that Mercedes is hitting excellent benchmarks with 400V Technology and they decided not to go High Voltage. Is it a real AMG? not so sure...but hey if its a more sporty EQS - steering, acceleration is fast enough for both anyway.
I like the tech and the interior but I dont like to the exterior design language of the EQS. I understand that the car is very aerodynamically slippery but it comes at the expense of making it attractive.
Personally my recommendation is allow people to open the bonnet for general leaf winter cleaning even if it opened old style like old Mercedes in reverse if they want to keep that front swoop profile , and ditch that external screen wash door that is a terrible decision that you know can be easily sabotaged - come on Mercedes
I openly admit that when it come to cars I’m old school. I love a good old V8 . American or German. When it comes to electric vehicles. It’s like trying to chose between Crest or Colgate. Boring!
I think Teslas are far to basic in their interiors. And not in a good way. Thank god the mainstream auto's are here to say that does not have to be so. That said id prefer MB to design this car for the US not China. Why many of us don't like it, its not for us. And thas all subconscious not I'm racist.
I unsubbed and re-subscribed. I was wondering why I wasn't getting notifications from your channel for over a month. Maybe this'll change that, finally.

People compare garbage Tesla to this which are about speed ? Who needs to be reading all the time with electric car ? This car has it all comfort speed and everything and Tesla cost more then this ? Tesla model s is same price as this and the plade whatever it’s called it’s like 180k Canadian or more that’s crazy I’ll take this eqs anytime and I don’t even need amg the regular one is fast enough if I ever want ev car I would get regular eqs it’s fast enough more then enough for me and any drivers I find it lame when electric cars are fast just doesn’t feel like a sport car no matter what I need to hear the sound like amg e63 if I want a sport car I don’t need a fast quiet car The regular eqs with bigger range is a go this amg not so much waste of money if you ask me
I'd get the 580 4Matic version to save money and get more luxury. It's still quick, a sub 4 second 0-60 time. And this is probably the most well-built car in its segment. Mercedes' reliability isn't what it once was, but it's still better than Tesla by a distance farther than its range and they still use the best materials. As a younger guy right now, I'm still Team Taycan, but as an older man in the future, I'd get the EQS all day.
12:49 LORD CA has THE worst roads ever. I can hear and feel you on the tarmak hitting each undulation in the road sections. Ive seen native Americans build better roads. I dig the sound. This will have to be a thing until its run its course and we are fine w our autonomous auto boxes in silence.
No hand built engine. No more "one person, one engine". So, is this still a "real" AMG?
I like the tech and the interior but I dont like to the exterior design language of the EQS. I understand that the car is very aerodynamically slippery but it comes at the expense of making it attractive.
Looks like a Corolla on the outside.
C'mon man who in there right mind would take this over a e63s
E63s is not as luxury as EQS53.
EQS is at S class level. Many super riches always prefer AMG versions of the S class range.
