I was there in 1983…opening night. Stood in a line that went around the block and had to let my sister sit on my lap.
The whole theater erupted in cheers and applause when Vader snatched The Emperor’s ass up. It was awesome!

People cheering and applauding in the theatre was the same reaction I witnessed when Vader yeeted the Emperor down the core shaft. I just wished George Lucas added the finally words between Vader and Sidious like they did in the radio adaptation. You can find this word for word on RUclips

What I love about Return of the Jedi is how Vader’s mask is shot from angles that seem to humanize him and make him look contemplative. It also says a lot for David Prouse’s acting in that suit

Anakin needed someone to back him. The last person to do that Ashoka, followed by Qui-Gon and his mother. Padme naturally. Luke picked his side and he could feel the love in that decision. I always contend that Kenobi never really wanted Anakin as a padawan - it was a legacy decision, as requested by Qui-Gon and not something he wanted. All Anakin needed to do was think of Luke's actions and it wasn't a huge leap to make. He was tired of Palpatine and his bio-suit. His desire for ruling the galaxy was over.

If anyone noticed, Vader was already searching for Luke before finding him on Hoth. When chasing the Falcon, the Emperor then comes to him about Luke. Vader was a step ahead.
He wanted that relationship in the twisted way of Sith Master/Apprentice at first because that's who he was at the time. Until he heard Luke's name after Yavin, Vader was someone who fed on his negative emotions that he killed his wife and baby on Mustafar. That glimmer of hope awoke Anakin. When Vader told Luke that he didn’t know the power of the dark side, I think he was talking about his fear of Palpatine's power and that he felt he had no choice but to be his slave.
I don’t think Vader wanted to bring Luke to him in shackles or encased in Carbonite. He knew that he would be pit against his son in a death match to keep his job. When Luke surged with dark side fury, I always thought Vader allowed himself to fall to sacrifice himself because killing Luke as full Sith or conflicted wasn't going to happen. When Luke pulled back to the light and defied Palpatine, it was a shock to him. No pun intended. It awoke Anakin entirely.
As far as the novels, comics, Disney, legends, etc. material is concerned, it is all fanfiction to me. It was written by other people outside of the actual writing team and is their opinion of the source material, all after the fact. There’s nothing wrong with that, but opinions are what they are. You can ask a million Star Wars fans and get a million different answers. Thanks for reading.

Even if Vader truly fought his son with winning intent, it was not at full power. Even the current canon makes it a point to illustrate that Vader becomes significantly weaker and less consistent when his mind is not "clear on the matter". It is by far his biggest weakness as a sith.

He didn't do it for the force, he did it as a father. He fell due to his love and attachments, yet he was redeemed through it as well. Then came the Woke days of Disney. Like Vader, we must train ourselves to let StarWars go and transcend so to speak, into the power of one, two, maaaaannnnnnnny.
